How To Make Navajo Tacos

  • In this video I will be showing how to make navajo tacos. I will show step by step how I go about making the dough and in this particular video I will be using a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, you don't necessarily need a mixer the old fashioned mixing by hand is good as well. Also I'll share my self taught way of preparing the beans that make navajo tacos come to fruition. So sit back relax and learn as I make a popular dish among Navajo People as well as many other Native American tribes.

A friend just taught me to make Navajo fry bread yesterday. Looked up RUclips videos to see the different ways people make them. I knew, as it is basically a fried flatbread, there would be different techniques and ingredients.
I like your video the best after watching a couple dozen. You speak clearly and now I am going to make a batch of fry bread completely on my own today.
I think my neighbors will appreciate me sharing fresh fry bread two days in a row. Hope they will also like your ingredients because I am more likely to have them on hand.

There are countless number of chefs and home maker chefs making countless number of food videos. Some don't even know their way around a kitchen but get tons of views. I really enjoy seeing real people who know what they are doing cooking real food. Great videos like this were once easy to find, sadly not so much anymore. Thanks, so glad to find this.

Thanks for sharing this! I’m going to be making these for my family soon! I live in Tucson, but it’s been way too long since I’ve had good fry bread!!! I’m very glad you use the mixer, because I have severe arthritis in my shoulders. Btw, not quite sure why so many are amazed with how clean your kitchen is... very commendable, but didn’t surprise me!😜🙏❤️

I watched this quite a while back and I was so impressed. Someone mentioned your cleanliness and I agree. Every time I've gone to Arizona for a few weeks I've gained 10 lb because I love Navajo Tacos. But I've never been able to make them as good as the natives. It's all how you were raised. I was raised on Swedish meatballs and lutefisk. Lutefisk, in my opinion, is rotten fish. Thank goodness it was only served once a year. I have not carried on the tradition.

Ya-ta-hey! It's good to see a young man who likes to cook!Thank you so much for that tutorial on how to make nav. frybread! I grew up in florida & we used Crisco for everything! Fried chicken, hushpuppies, minute steak, ect. Yeah, I know you can't get bluebird flour & you cannot get comino seeds/Gebhardt's either, at least not where I live at in Tennessee. We ate a lot of grits too, either w/fried fish or for breakfast. My favorite thing is Navaho tacos. (I get comino seeds from the Mexicano market in another town)

thanks for sharing this recipe, that Looks really good, I would be remiss if I didn't commend you on the cleanliness and neatness of your kitchen, Your mother really taught you well, I have 2 sons and early on they learned to cook, clean, wash, iron etc. which I caught a lot of flax for, family and friends always said that's woman's work, I say they are survival skills because all guys don't get married or they marry ladies that can't or won't do those things. I know you've made you mom proud. Peace-N-Blessings dear.

Maxine Stokes I have 5 sons and all of them cook and clean. I told them that one they were going to fall in love, get married, and have kids, and giving birth is very painful. Your wife will need help with everything, especially if they have a c-section. And it’s part of bonding your family 💝
4 out of 5 did good 👍 then there’s that one that inherited the machismo gene 🤦‍♀️

Our kids need to learn to be self sufficient so that they marry for the right reasons, not because they need someone to take care of them. Gear job with your boys ladies.

I use flour, baking powder, salt and olive oil & slowly add warm water to mix in kitchen aid...best modern way to make Navajo dough! If our grandmas had a mixer they’d be having loads of fun using a kitchen aid mixer! I know my grandma would of loved it!! Thanks for the video!! You’re awesome bread maker especially with clapping it out...I cheat by using a rolling pin! 🥰

Wow I am not sure why it recommended this video to me but I'm glad to see you making Indian Tacos and you make your fry bread very similar to how I was taught to make mine. I was adopted by my dad who started the first powwow club of Tulsa and it started in his backyard with him, his wife, kids, and brothers and sisters but as his kids got older and started families of their own and sadly they moved away and his wife passed away yrs before I met him. His kids were no longer active much in the powwow club and didn't dance or sing very often at the powwows and my mom and I saw him doing an interview on TV about the upcoming powwow a few weeks after the interview and my mom and step dad had started taking me and my 2 sisters to his powwows when my mom moved with us 3 girls to Tulsa in 1979 from a very small town in ne Arkansas and I was wanting to learn more about my native American side of my family so we ended up meeting up with him and after we all got to know each other he asked my mom if she would be ok if I wanted to he could teach me about that and adopt me so I could dance and become part of his family as well so I could teach others what he taught me and make sure both of our families and tribes ways could be carried on through me teaching others. I'm a little sad tho because it looks like you no longer do videos on RUclips and I just subscribed. Lol. Anyway I enjoyed watching a couple of your videos and I will watch more later. I hope you are having a very blessed 2020 so far.

You have taught this old lady how to make a new meal. Thanks for making it simple to follow. I had watched others making fry bread and it just looked to complicated to me. My kitchen aid is going to get a work out later today.
