Sonic the Hedgehog - How it Started

- Welcome to the start of my review series for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. While I plan on covering other games in the future, seeing as how I've already done a video on Mania and Forces, I felt that it was a good time to take a look back at the beginning and see how it all started.

And the legends say that sonic 2 never came...
💀
I really loved this video to bad we never got that sonic 2 video you promised.
This might be Haze branching out and trying to grow his channel. If this takes off eventually and his channel shifts focus to things like this it would be fine. Best of luck with this that the algorithm doesn't mess your exposure.
my my
Your edits are so satisfying, especially accompanied by your voice! Great inflection, balanced pace and super friendly tone. Your opinions are measured and well-informed, and it makes me want to play the game!! Great job Haze
The way you described it, I think Green Hill shows us what Sonic is and Marble Zone shows us what Sonic is trying not to be, while Spring Yard is a mix of both.
Still waiting on Sonic 2…
Id totally love to watch more content like this, it was super entertaining to watch and i got a real good laugh! Cant wait to see more Sonic reviews!~
Great video. Thanks for coming to the series with an open mind and not blindly hating on it just to fit in
No problem :)
This is great Haze, it’s wonderful to see you exploring new video topics and styles. Would love to see more
This is awesome! I've always wanted to see you branch into more reviews, your analytical approach mixed with humor in some Realm content is perfect for general game reviews. Love to see this booting off a new series of it
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT MY WHOLE LIFE YOU SAID A CURSE WORD FINALLY I KNEW IT
I agree on the starlight zone theme comment.
I never played this is a kid but still felt nostalgic somehow from hearing that theme.
Will you be returning to this video series in the future? I assume not, given it's been five years, and I'm sure the huge chunk of recent Sonic content still left for you to cover will take precedence anyway, but I would love to see this sort of analysis for other older Sonic games, even if not all of them
This man is like Cybershell at this point, it's like waiting for the next bonus video all over again!
"Sonic 2 is next on my list"

I'm really happy to see you branching out from realm and doing videos on other things you're passionate about. Excellent video; even though I've seen others like it, it was refreshing to watch one in your style and to hear your thoughts.
and then he never did sonic 2. the end.
Since I'm going through my own journey of playing most fo the main line sonic games myself, wouldn't mind if Bricky came back to going over a lot of the main line sonic games again. Be nice to see a semi-neutral take on some of these classics or even underappreciated games.
You reunited the spark I had for Sonic games
Just the beginning with the m-speed glitch was gold!
Hey Bick, I started a new account for fun on Roth and while watching your how to get more White bags video I got my first white bag in the snake Pitt. Love ya man keep it up.
Fun fact: Labyrinth Zone was originally going to be the 2nd level after Green Hill, which would make more since with the transition of nature to technology, but was pushed back due to its difficulty.
Glad to see you’re able to ignore all else and pursue what you like, happy sub here. :)
I love how the first Sonic game might seem slow at first, but actually has GREAT speedrunning potential, for example: If you never get hit in the Labyrinth boss, you can beat it pretty fast, or in Scrap Brain act 3, you can finish the level in 40 SECONDS for an AVERAGE player, no glitches.
Edit: Replayibility is the goal here, if you play the game alot, Labyrinth Zone might become tolerable, enjoyable even! All the secrets in the game feel GOOD TO FIND! I love the feeling when you can choose a diffirent route or find new secrets to shave seconds off your time, or find some item boxes for that sweet succulent dopamine.
Bro, I love this.
1:50 THAT SOUND ALWAYS GAVE ME ANXIETY
Looking forward to your Sonic 2 video! Keep it up!
this video is great i cant wait for more games to be covered
I love how this is pretty much. "I LOVE THE BOSS STAGES!"
Awesome video Talwar!
Wtf I didn’t get the notification. Glad I still came early though! Love you Talwar!!
Incredible I already love it
Love you box, I only wish the best of you for your hard work 🤗
You're video title reminded me of the song from sonic and the secret rings "that's how it started" its a banger if you want to listen too it
It's nice to see a you tuber who appreciates sponge bob references!
8:32 I found a similar glitch in sonic 2. In the water level (I forgot the name) there's a part where a block can fall on sonic and instead of killing him instantly, he just falls through the floor and eventually dies after a second or two.
"These bats can blow me"
This may be a side effect of internalizing the zones more and more each time I play, but I actually really like Labyrinth and Marble. I keep trying to think of why; maybe it's because the pacing, linearity and design really click with me despite valuing branching levels, maybe it's the music, maybe it's being sandwiched between more active stages to give a sort of ACBCA structure (not including Scrap Brain). It's hard to explain, but despite the design continuously getting refined through til Sonic 3 and Knuckles, I have very nearly the same fun I do with Sonic 1 as I do with Sonic 3.
I first played Sonic 1 as a seven-year-old and it took me forever to get past Green Hill Zone. Maybe that's why I've always lived Marble Zone despite its flaws?
Yes. This is good. I like this.
I like Labyrinth too. And there are really cool shortcuts. I can breeze through this zone now in under 2 mins per act. The boss battle is cool and there is plenty of time if skilled to not need to stop for air bubbles. Granted im glad that type of zone was a one off. Starlight is my favorite zone. Just too short. It's so good
Wonderful video! Hope to see more*
Sonic The Hedgehog: This is cool!
Sonic Adventure: This is weird.
Sonic Adventure 2: This is fun!
Sonic Adventure: This is not fun.
Sonic Heroes: Is this good?
Sonic Adventure 2: Is this bad?
Shadow The Hedgehog: Is this a thing?!
Sonic The Hedgehog: WHAT IS THIS?!
THAT LAST PART GOT ME DYING!!
Honestly Marble and Labyrinth were always my favorite zones in the game and some of my favorite in the series. The slow and pretty tricky action but such simple controls make for a great time and Labyrinth's and multiple paths make it so no playthrough ever feels the same
The only part I actually don't like was ironically the moment when you were talking about how you kinda like the zone. That giant spike pit can suck the fattest of fat ones
Starlight Zone's theme also has that almost proud and mighty marching beat in the back which is so neat
Also Labyrinth was supposed to come second, making the zones reflect modernity in civilization, Green Hill having none, Labyrinth being ancient, Spring Yard being rural, Marble being like a quarry, starlight is urban and Scrap Vrain is almost Lorax esque futuristic dystopia
This is a really good video, of course all of your practice with the Rotmg Guide videos really shine in this video which makes it probably one of the top reviews for sonic i've seen, The only problem being with all of the competition on making reviews for popular games it's hard for you to be able to stand out to others outside of your current fanbase. I feel like you should focus on ways to make it appealing to other people to be able to find and enjoy these types of videos. Adding something unique that other reviewers don't have would be difficult but also rewarding. With all that being said i think the video is outstanding and i hope you get the recognition you deserve!
Thanks man, I'm hoping that consistency is what allows the series to grow. Maybe after the first few, it'll catch on.
Sonic is 100% my childhood game
Man I love Sonic
I agree with these opinions a lot and for the stuff I don’t agree with, I understand why you feel that way towards it.
First, let’s get Sonic the Hedgehog out of the way. I had more fun playing as him than I will ever have playing as Mario. His fast pace really fits the game at times and makes it a blast to play through going down slopes or rabbit holes, etc. His attack set of curling into a ball is really interesting and a cool concept. I have fun bouncing on enemies and more items.
I also wanted to talk about Dr. Robotnik, more so known as Eggman. I think he was established as a good villain well as he could be in this game. He’s very into technology and hates nature. He captures flickies in capsules and uses them as badniks, his robot brand right now to combat Sonic but as Sonic keeps defeating them, Eggman knows he has to take things into his own hands. Eggman is resilient and will do anything to defeat Sonic and conquer the world, making turning it into his Eggman Empire, no matter how much he fails.
Everyone knows how amazing Green Hill Zone is, it’s the perfect Sonic level. I love all the pathways you can take, the advantages you can find, the background has an amazing blend of colors, it’s so bright I love it. It really does take advantage of Sonic’s abilities.
Just like Green Hill Zone, everyone knows Marble Zone is a bad level. I understand you see some positives it has and I totally get that, the walls you can go through and find advantages are really cool and the boss isn’t half bad, but it just does not do this level justice for me. Really just the opposite of a Sonic level and frustrates me beyond belief.
Spring Yard Zone, I actually really like! If SEGA wanted a zone to slow things down after Green Hill Zone, they should’ve done this. It’s more fun finding advantages through walls and other paths than Marble Zone and on par with Green Hill in these terms. I just have fun playing through the zone, I like the casino setting (although it is done better in Sonic 2) and I really have fun bouncing on the bumpers. It just has all the positives of Green Hill Zone while not being as good. The boss is fine, pretty good. I like the concept, challenge is nice. I just experienced glitches like the one you did.
Labyrinth Zone is pretty overhated. Sure, the water in the zone stinks but I agree with everything in the video you said about it. Climbing up out of the water is pretty fun, there are tons of ways to get out of the water, the non water sections are really fun and the feeling of going down in a cavern is really interesting. That doesn’t mean I like it. I still despise the water in the zone and the booby traps everywhere is really frustrating. It’s just not as bad as people call it. I don’t enjoy it tho. I will say this, however. The boss is my favorite part of the zone. Very challenging yet exciting and a really cool concept. When I beat the boss, it feels earned.
Star Light Zone…yeah, you are right about everything about this zone. It is truly amazing and the second best zone in the game, Green Hill being the obvious best for me. First, the setting is beautiful. I love how it’s set at night with the stars shining in the sky. Really adds to the feel of this zone. I also agree with how you liked the under construction building design. The dark green color really makes it look nicer with the setting too. First, right after the slow as hell Marble Zone, decently fast Spring Yard Zone and dreaded Labyrinth Zone, we are now back to full speed with Star Light Zone. It’s really almost as much fun as Green Hill Zone and I might even like the setting more. But yeah, you are right. I am still annoyed with the unseen enemies, never really fell into pits on my play through, however. Now, the boss is actually my favorite in the game. I agree with you and love how it takes advantage of the seesaw gimmicks, bouncing the spikes up the seesaw or bouncing yourself up the seesaw and attacking Eggman is really satisfying for me. It’s a fun little gimmick that I have fun playing through each time.
Scrap Brain Zone. A great last full zone for the first Sonic the Hedgehog…for the first two acts, that is. I love the robotic factory setting, really sells that Nature vs Technology theme. The first two acts really feel like you are in a robotic factory. The platforms that disappear fast, the fire coming from above or below, the electricity sparking from the robots, the caution tape, the platforms that flip, the conveyors, it really does feel like the final zone. The concept is amazing. It’s too bad the final act was really disappointing. I don’t like the fact that the final act is the fourth act of Labyrinth Zone with Scrap Brain Zone’s color pallet. Really just feels repetitive and annoying.
Final Zone. This is said to be the final zone while also being one act and Scrap Brain Zone’s boss fight. It’s a cool concept, I really like the idea of two pistons crushing you at a time, Eggman being in one and four electrical spheres attacking you each time after two pistons attack you. Really feels like the final boss of Scrap Brain but it is pretty easy once you get the hang of it which is pretty sad. Would’ve loved a challenging boss to play through to finish the game. Still, a okay boss. Maybe my second favorite in the game because I love the concept so much.
That’s Sonic the Hedgehog…almost. If you get 50 rings after the end of each first and second act, you get to go through special stages. If you complete all 6, you get 6 chaos emeralds which give you the good ending…! Really disappointing to go through all those special stages just to get flowers in the background of the normal ending. The normal ending is the same as the good ending but with no flowers and Eggman taunting by moving the 6 chaos emeralds he has from one hand to the other. I know I may be moving ahead but in Sonic 2, you got Super Sonic by collecting all 7 chaos emeralds. A super version of Sonic who is almost invincible, they can die by getting crushed. Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog was an amazing experience for me. I’m very nostalgic for Sonic the Hedgehog, he was the main part of my childhood and the first game I ever played was Sonic the Hedgehog with little changes on a mobile port by Christian Whitehead. It will forever be a part of my childhood and me. Overall, I rate the game a 7/10. I can see it’s flaws more as time goes on but it was a really fun experience for me. Also, I have some bias.
Really can’t wait for the sequel, since I believe Sonic 2 is a perfect sequel and I love the game so much and want to see your opinions on it. I believe Sonic 2 is a 10/10, but that’s just me. Alright, see ya.
New content? I agree with this, you do what you want to do

Sonic 2 video when?
Good video. Do sonic CD next pls
Tugtugg After Sonic 2, yeah.
Video is desynced :L
Not a fan of Sonic 1. I'm expected to jump into the unknown the entire time... _and at high speeds._ It definitely could have been designed around this quite easily: just make Sonic have the necessary agency to mitigate certain dangers, and put obvious clues as to what is ahead. For example, if I see bright flashing lights marqueeing across a strip of arrows going right, that probably means I can go fast without any serious consequences. Apparently the best they could come up with is sectioning vertical space into slow, regular, and fast going from bottom to top.
Here are the problems I have about Sonic's agency in Sonic 1. I'm going to restrict everything here to 4:3 aspect ratio for the sake of being fair:
1. When you're falling, you can't always mitigate fall damage induced by enemies that you can't see. If you jump off a spring and a beebot is flying by on your way down--tough luck, bud. I forget, can I initiate ball mode while falling in Sonic 1? If I could do that, then I could mitigate all but hazard damage when falling.
2. In general, you can't see what's ahead. To help with that, just move the screen more in the direction that I'm going. The faster I go, the more the screen should move in that direction, even making Sonic go off-screen if necessary (but not _too_ much obviously). Additionally, everything can be scaled down so that more is visible on screen, but this shouldn't change too drastically between standing still, regular speed, and hyperspeed/acceleration. I'd have to think more on that to figure out what's best.
3. Indeed, slopes are conducive to speed--unless you're going uphill from a stand-still or going regular running speed. Revving up doesn't do it for me either. You have to be in one place for a while before you can then go fast, and then you end up hitting an obstacle just as quickly, so the means here doesn't have a just reward.
Putting all of these together, what I tend to do in Green Hill Act 1 is try to get every box on screen but with the desire to go fast. I'm going fast and--oh look, a box I just passed that's above me--time to turn around! Once I get a box, suddenly a beebot flies over, so I try to get that guy if I can, or I'm so awkwardly far away that I just get hit instead because speeding up from a stand-still is too slow. Revving up like you can in Sonic 2 and beyond wouldn't help because then I'd go too far. The bot might also be too far into the animation cycle to avoid the shot if you jump up from below instead of up and across which feels awkward given how long you have to hold the jump button for to go high. In summary, Sonic in Sonic 1 feels like controlling a powerful humanoid who needs to always get up to speed and can't stay in speed for long unless you've optimized your route through the level--and that isn't happening on a first playthrough, so for me, it's just pain. (I actually got a pretty braindead response to "sanic wun bayed; you can't see what's coming" with "just memorize the level". Brvh.) And then of course is all the issues you mentioned in the video, so yeah. Sonic 2 and 3 were definitely better experiences overall from what I recall. I'll have to play everything again when I get the chance, but I'm too busy lol.
owo good job
nice
Hey Talwar, you could say I came here... Sonic fast xdddd
