  • Jeff Ray from Superformance Fab joins us to explain the process of etching, what it shows and compares results between dabbing and lay wire TIG welding techniques. This was an audience request that we had. So, what is an etch test? An etch test is a technique used to test a weld by revealing the structure of the base material and weld. It’s a destructive testing method that is used to evaluate the characteristics of the weld. First, the sample is cut to expose the profile of the weld. This allows us to see how the weld is adhering to the base metal, and also shows us other characteristics like penetration or cracks.

Great video guys. That cam kit to show the puddle is pretty cool. I’d like to see it just a tad darker if it has settings but it’s a perfect shot. I also really enjoyed the NDT portion and etch inspection of the root side

Never seen a lay wire technique on this channel, I personally prefer on carbon or up to p22 chrome which uses 90 series wire a 5/32” gap and 3/32” wire and I only dab if the gap closes otherwise I actually feed the wire

I have tried everything to etch my TIG weld. They will not etch. Any reason? The welds look great and burned in good. ER70S-6 filler. Been welding for years and even welded molds when I was a tool maker with TIG.. I cannot get a etch line. I even cut the welded part off and it was burned in as it should be. I am using Permatex 81756 Rust Dissolver.

Yeah I have to agree. I’m a boilermaker and have welded many a tube, but that root would have went down on just the visual. This was very informative but if your going to teach you should teach correctly gentleman. Other then that very good information provided in the video.

For the stainless. Wouldn't it be better to use stainless instead of tungsten? Hahaha
