Jimi was the top paid act of the time and at woodstock. The organizer actually asked Jimi to go on the night before during the crowd's peak, but, according to him, Jimi wanted to close the show as planned and did so in the morning after many had left. I often wonder what it would have been like had he gone on at night, but the show we got was so perfectly legendary.

You guys gotta realize the genius in his playing..he not only played the national anthem but he made it sound like dive bombers and bombs going off..he played the chaotic sounds of war as he played it..purely amazing..he was also in the 101st airborne for a time

Great react... You are so spot-on with your descriptions. A few notes: This isn't Band of Gypsies... It's Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. The band has Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Billy Cox (bass). Jerry Velez is on congas, but they turned his track off the final mix because he was tripping and just not in sync with the rest of the band. This performance is towards the end of his set, not the beginning. There were about 45,000 (estimate) there to watch that Monday morning, down from a cool ~500,000 at its peak. A defining moment in the turbulent late '60s. Brilliant performance! A highlight of Woodstock. Thanks for the excellent react!
I'm 70, this is my anthem of my generation. I got to see Woodstock 14 nights in a row at the drive in. All for free, I knew the people at the box office. RIP Jimi, thank you. ✌Jim

Jimi jammed a bit before he played the Star Spangled Banner and his EXPERIENCE drummer Mitch Mitchell was on drums at Woodstock...you can even see him waiting there in the background for Jimi to start Purple Haze.....I was there bro :)
I heard very clearly the bombs, I heard the incoming ordinance, I heard the inbound war planes and the sounds of machine gun fire, I heard very clearly the "bombs bursting in air......"
For him to create those clearly produced sounds (ie, the sounds of war machines) - and then to blend them beautifully into our National Anthem - he thus created an unprecedented artistic statement, uniquely on a genius level, and it remains an achievement to this day that is unmatched by any other musical artist.
Jimi's talent was as if he was touched by God, as his recordings and performances clearly reflect. He is widely considered to be the greatest guitarist in the history of popular music

From what I gathered from an interview he did he was in the army for a brief period so toys meant more to him in navy different ways.
it was controversial due to the war in Vietnam. the country was divided and all the protests for the war. I missed Woodstock due me going to Vietnam. something I really would have loved to see.

Great reaction y'all! I love the appreciation for this timeless, historical, classic piece of art being that I am a big Hendrix fan. A couple of things though. There is a video that shows his whole body while he's playing this on RUclips. I suggest y'all check it out. Lastly, Jimi didn't open up with this song. This was towards the end of his performance. I don't know exactly what you meant by open up but if you're talking about it as in the first song they played, this was not it. This was towards the end of their performance. Saw Hendrix at the Isle of Wright festival UK two days before he died. Over the moon to see him live only to get kicked in the guts two days later

This was a statement made. Listen to it and say the words along with him playing. Super bright almost in your face, like the "dawn's early light" To make you feel the words. And the hammer-ons make the line "galantly streaming" come to life.
The main point of playing the National Anthem at all though, comes right after "rockets red glare" he mimics the literal sound of planes dropping bombs and chaos. "bombs bursting in air" sounds of sirens more chaos, almost sounds like screams at points.
"our flag was still there" and playing Taps, a direct reference to the amount of soldiers that are not "still here".
Mid 20s and made an anti-war statement with out using a single word.
You mentioned the emotion of his face. It was a master story teller living the story he is telling in the moment.
And he definitely tore it apart to make room for the implied realities of the USA in 1969.

It’s much easier to duplicate or even better the technicality, but you can’t duplicate the soul.
Jimi was supposed to play on the Sunday night which was the LAST night of Woodstock but due to other acts taking TOO LONG and some rain, Jimi came on EARLY Monday morning when MOST of the people had gone HOME...if you watch the movie Woodstock you will see shots of the field where everybody was and it looks more or less EMPTY with everyone who was left right at the stage area. The WHOLE Star Spangled Banner is the sound of Jimi's interpretation of THE SOUNDS OF THE VIETNAM WAR!!!!
Jimi was a composite of America you two. He was BLack yes, He was also American Indian on BOTH sides of his Family, Jimi Great great grandfather was an Irish Man !! He was so ahead of his time,so ahead of his time! Play on Gypsy Boy!

Watch the various documentaries about Woodstock you two will learn so much about the 70s - the best decade ever musically from the Laurel Canyon folk rock Crosby Stills Nash And etc through the Doors to sad ending of the era due to tragic events eg Manson murders Altamount concert

Guys, there is a different clip of this performance with much, much better camera work, that concentrate more on Jimi's hands.
And he did NOT open with "Star Spangled Banner". It was towards the end of the set. And this was not the Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix called the Woodstock band, Gypsysl, Son and Rainbows. This was 4 months before the Band Of Gypsys brief history.Mitch Mitchell was still behind the drums at Woodstock. Apart from 5 shows from the Band Of Gypsys, Mitch plays at every show.

Another greatest moment in rock was Eddie Van Halens guitar- Solo/Eruption - Live without a Net 1986' You will be stunned by his talents. Even Michael jackson had Eddie play the Solo on Michaels hit song - Beat it. Jimi was very unique & very influential as well. Enjoyed ur reaction👍👍
