jimi was used during his time in the JH Experience to make the government a lot of money. then he started to want to break away from the corporate machine, do his own thing, own the rights to his own music, play with the gypsies in a jam band instead of the easily-marketable experience, get in touch with his roots as an african american bluesman and get involved with the black panthers, and so they realized they wouldn’t be able to use him to make nearly as much money anymore, so they killed him. As a guitarist and Latino, I can say that Santana, the band is much more than its guitarist. It's a whole thing, keyboards, rhythm percussion, African and Latin sounds, and obviously Carlos's guitar, but he is one more contributor to the sound of this powerful band. They were not considered for Woodstock 1989, but Bill Graham demanded that they be there. And it was one of the best performances

Jimi was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne in the Viet Nam war and completed his duty before Woodstock, which explains all the bombing and war sounds in his version. Note he's left handed. He had to restring his own guitar to get a left handed one. Most amazing and creative guitarist I can think of.

Unfortunately, this opening is edited from the original version of the film performance. In the original version, the song begins with several high piano keys through the Leslie and then the rumbling undercurrent of the organ is almost inaudible and builds very gradually. It sounds like they cut off a couple of minutes off the intro. Very aggravating.

Yes, Jimi is the greatest. Honorable mention for other 20th Century rock/fusion guitarists in no particular order: Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, Edward Van Halen. Most everybody since then has been standing on their shoulders. There are some kids today doing new things. Saw Animals as Leaders at their 2023 Phoenix sound check and they are monsters. Tosin Abasi is mind boggling. First time since EVH came along that I felt like I was witnessing something truly innovative on guitar.
