at the risk of sounding offensive (not my intention just coming to this without context), i thought it was a Canadian from South Park reference. also, how do you think this compares to the Rush in Rio version? Alex's guitar def seems a little different
Neil, Alex, and Geddy are elite level, master class musicians and consummate professionals. Neil was called, “the professor” because wrote most of the lyrics to their songs. He was a very cerebral person. Their bond was unbreakable because they deeply respected and loved each other. The loss of Neil was beyond devastating to Alex, Geddy and their fan base.
His daughter was killed in a single vehicle rollover accident (no other cars involved) while on her way back to college in Canada. His wife was fighting cancer at the time, and she died as a result of her cancer (and depression) 10 months later. I remember being very sad at that time that Rush was through as a band. They had been my favorite since 1979. I was so happy when Vapor Trails came out 7 years later. Rush was back! It had taken 5+ years for Neil Peart to grieve his losses. There you have it!
Great vid. Really enjoyed the commentary as well. Neil and Rush... exalted. Unexpected ASMR from the girl host's voice. She made me so comfortable when she spoke, I almost dozed off. Enjoyable. I'll watch this one again... There will never be abother Neil Peart. Not in this or the next few lifetimes. What a mind he had.
I like this anecdote ... Neil's mother asked him once why he had to look so *serious* all the time when he was playing. He just said, "Because it's HARD, Mom!"
His daughter and wife passed away like a year apart. Daughter in a car crash wife cancer and a broken heart she lost the will to live and wanted to die.
Neil Peart pronounced his name just as it is spelled: P - ear - T You're saying: P - ur - T PS - As YYZ was about a Canadian airport, it's pronounced "why-why-zed." And yes, that was a triangle, upon which Neil was playing the morse code for YYZ.
Yes, I agree he is the greatest no drummer comes close and that wasn't his best solo. I've seen them 23 times and in some cases he gets better and better, he never stopped learning and never stopped teaching some of the greatest drummers today . But he will live in drummer's heads forever. THE GOAT, THE PROFESSOR THE GREATEST DRUMMER OF ALL TIME MR NEIL PEART....................
@@gozaband Don't add it tobthe list, lol. The Professor is this drummer, Neil that you are reacting to in this video. The other 2 masters in this video are Alex and Geddy.
Fyi Neal’s last name is pronounced "Peert". His daughter died in a single car accident and his wife never got over this tragedy. She was diagnosed with cancer but chose not to fight and passed about a year later. You are totally right about how he chose to grieve by riding his motorcycle for a long trip from Quebec to Alaska to Mexico etc. He wrote a book on that trip called : Ghost Rider: Travels on the healing road.
I'm a long time Rush fan - I liked them, but jumped completely on-board when Moving Pictures came out. One thing this band helped me with regarding my musical journey is the ability to simultaneously hear instruments doing completely different jams. With only 3 guys, and all being so clean and concise, I can manage it! This song is a perfect example - When Alex goes into his solo, I try to focus on that, but you can't ignore the freaking bass solo at the same time! And then there's Neil playing along with Geddy and filling choice spaces with incredible percussion.
I loved his description of that kit from the tour program, “white with a delicate hint of pink!” With Geddy’s response of, “What on earth possessed you………”
compositionally, his best recorded drum solo is from the ESL record album featuring no electronics, just his rosewood Tama Superstars. Starts on snare, incorporating the rest of the kit as he goes along until the big concert tom fill when he gets around to the floor toms. Unfortunately, the recorded version of that album bordered on horrific, muddy bass guitar, almost invisible guitar..... which was cleaned up a lot by Alex when they did the re release; in his mix you can actually hear the air around the drumkit (though Alex inexplicably buried the synth note at the end of Xanadu, which is ridiculous because there is a camera pointing right at that spot on the keys when Geddy hits the note but you can barely hear it). I would be very interested to hear a well mixed version of the Tama drums ESL solo compared to this white Ludwig kit, because the mounted toms on this kit just roar...... I would hope that the Tamas were equally good sounding
Pro drummer here - great solo - not nearly his best - his solo from 'YYZ - Exit Stage Left' Montreal 1981 is probably the most famous drum solo ever - any band - any era - that solo set the standard by which any rock/fusion drummer goes by - and what made him a legend - too bad it's only audio, but that's all you need to hear pure genius -
Yes. Agreed. I always wondered why there no visual of that solo recorded. Also, I always wondered why Neil playing on the raft outside Le Studio was not recorded? Just pics of it. If you look up Rush in 1982 in either Montréal or Nassau Coliseum on Long Island someone bootlegged a recording of that solo, which was pretty much the same as the ESL solo.
Talking about Neil's drum solo, try his iconic drum solo at Frankfurth, Germany. My friends & I were fortunate enough to see Rush live during their Time Machine tour in 2010. As they gotten older, Rush has never lost their touch. Good Memories!
Some stated that Neil Peart is an introvert. Yes, he is! Only close friends are his bandmates: Alex Lifeson & Geddy Lee. Neil likes to ride his bike on long trips alone. I think that Neil was battling his cancer during Rush's final tour R40 in 2015, 5 years before his sad death of brain cancer. Both Alex & Geddy performed together since Neil's death at Taylor Hawkins tribute concert. They jammed with Danny Carey.
If you'd like to read about the journey that Neil took after his wife and daughter died, be sure to read his book Ghost Rider; he also wrote a song of the same title for their album Vapor Trails, which they performed during their show in Rio. Rest in peace Professor. 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐
One thing to add about Neil......it's not that the Hollywood Walk of Fame was beneath him, he was extremely uncomfortable around fans. Very introverted, he wanted to be seen as a normal average guy.
Good reactions live in Frankfort Germany his most advance solo it has parts of this solo in it, and brand new sections nice compliments for the grandfathers of progressive music .I feel rush is God given because all the good they give not only musically but lyrically concerning types of hope Ive wrote songs that sound similar to rush because i was so influence by them. and still are. Glad u saw their last show I saw that tour in Tampa great .Do freewill sometime as musicians should appreciate it, if don't know the song already. well wishes to you and yours
it's YYZ..pronounced why-why-zed. It's an airport code for a Canadian (Toronto) airport, so please annunciate it as it should be. We don't say Zed-Zed-top, as the band from TX and is thr pronounced Zee-Zee-Top!!
I describe the difference between Peart and Bonham like the difference in a Lamborghini and a fully decked out racing 67 Chevy Camaro. They are both fast as hell but one is slick as a lightning bolt the other is the hammer of the Gods!! Both EQUALLY as affective just a matter of taste.
Hey Guys!!! Great Reaction!! I'm a New SUB and a HUGE RUSH Fan, since 1975!!! Here's the Album Version, from the 1981, "Moving Pictures" Tour (Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, etc.), that is IMHO, Neil's Greatest Solo!!! As you Listen to this, Try to IMAGINE, ALL the Percussion items he Hits during this!!! His "Riffs & Combos" are Much Different than the ones on THIS Video, his more Recent, Popular one, that's on the videos that Most "Reactors" do! BTW, to the Best of my Rush Video Knowledge, NO Other Reactors have done the version I'm Posting here Now! Maybe a Few have, that I Haven't seen, BUT, YOU will be One of the FIRST and You'll Hopefully and Most Likely, get MANY Hits & New Subs!!! Sorry guys but this video doesn't do it's justice to watching Mr. Peart's drum solo! I had the privilege of seeing this Supergroup in concert! The only gripe I had with the professor is he didn't wear a Superman cape! That's how awesome he was to watch live! I sure do miss him😔
The story you tell about Rush's origin story isn't accurate. They were just a garage band when founded in '69, as the guys were still in high school. And "the guys" didn't even include Peart until 1974. I'm guessing you've heard their eponymous 1974 debut album. There's nothing proggy about it - and that's one of the reasons why the original drummer was fired. Geddy and Alex were really into Yes and King Crimson, while their erstwhile colleague, the late John Rutsey, was more of a Bad Company kind of kind (as Alex once out it). They were accordingly thrilled when they met Neil becauze he liked the same stuff and shared a similar ambition for the kind of music they could make - which they started making in 1974/1975. Finally, it's not at all accurate to suggest that Peart didn't attend the walk of fame ceremony (and others like it) because he thought it beneath him. He was instensly shy and private (so much so that it wouldn't surprise me at all to hear that he was on the super-functional side of the autism spectrum, in addition to being manifestly gifted). He also had good reason to be extremely selective about media hits, given how so many members of the fifth estate wouldn't have left his twin tragedies of 1997/1998 alone. And while we're on the subject, in the moment Neil had told them he was done and so, therefore, was Rush (in 1998). The same thing happened - for good this time - when Peart retired after the R40 tour in 2015. He did so both because he wished to depart the scene while still at the top of his game and because he dearly wished to spend more time with his school-aged daughter from a second wife (the acclaimed photographer, Carrie Nuttal). Cruelly, he would receive a terminal brain cancer notice less than a year later.
The only thing about this solo is I don't know what idiot thought we wouldn't want to see the rest of the solo. Fortunately it's on the live album Show Of Hands.
It's Y Y zed. NOT Y Y zee Rush is Canadian. Z - "zed" is Canadian in fact most English-speaking countries, including Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom, the letter's name is zed but God only knows why in Americans say zee

You may want to check out any Buddy Rich solo. Most every drummer we love today gets their influence in some way from him.
Great pick. The reason why Rio is the best example of YYZ, is because Alex doesn’t butcher it as he does here and doesn’t overshadow Geddy.
