if none of the valves are bent, it should be pretty easy to fix. The hardest part is pulling off the timing cover. Lock the crank with a pin and you can improvise the cam retainers. You just have to loosen the cam bolts, lock the cams in position and re-tighten the cam bolts. ruclips.net/video/z1Ai0l7xYUA/видео.html

Retiming the engine isn't that hard. The tools can be bought or possibly rented, getting the front cover off isn't that bad once the radiator is out. I did the same job on a Xk8 which had a tensioner fail, once I carefully turned the crank and cam to check each of that bank's cylinders for bent valves and found none, it wasn't hard to do. Cruising in an XJ. is something special. Everyone has a BMW or Mercedes, Jaguars are just so smooth and classy, keep trying to get this one running. It is a great chance to learn what it ls like to work on a Jag.
No need, a compression check is plenty, & the fact cranking evenly once the oil had circulated, then ran ok when it did start, means the valves are very probably all fine.

Sold it to my neighbor who drove it until he passed it on to his daughter, who drove it all through college. the paint was insanely difficult to screw up. the wool carpets wouldn't stay soiled. the leather and piping just... lasted. even the wood retained it's luster 30 years later. I moved houses before that damn car gave up the ghost. disappointed here too... this is a great series for the channel, not just if you can flip it. the mystery is great... would be cool to get to the bottom of it. re-time the engine, then do compression test... stop there if dead holes, ok
I’d sure like to see you get this one running since it’s already got the parts installed. Maybe just put it on the back burner for now and revisit it when you have a bit more space
Since the new tensioners where there, what I'd guess is that a well at home meaning mechanic did all the original work, then when it didn't work, they took it to a dealer on one of those "get $2,500 trade for any car if you buy a new one before New years!" The dealer may have seen the cause, checked the pistons, and shoved it in the corner. Anyway, it's still a great conversation piece. lol . Thanks for the ride JR. Cant wate to see the new one!
Car share. Get Ninja to fix it for 50 percent driving . You already got the parts. Winter beater. Get some second hand Mud And snows..next problem odd brakes. Thought this was a car show.
Just put it aside & re-do the timing it when you can get hold of the tools & have time to fit it in, should only take a couple of hours. The valves are obviously all fine as it ran evenly when it did run, you can always do a compression check to make 100% sure.
By 1999, Ford owned Jag and the quality of things like electronics improved ten fold. I've been researching XK8's and the instrument clusters have Ford stickers all over them. I watch all your videos. I think the Jag needs a little more time for you to get it right. Your a smart guy you have it figured out that's half the battle.
You Don't need the tools just use a straight edge on the flats of the cams if its in time your problem is a bad ignition amplifier they are $200 each car has two, located back along the firewall back behind the throttle body.
Very GOOD cars if you know the problems they all have.
It would make great content to see this beautiful car run again there is nothing to loose by setting the timing up and trying
I’d like to see the car saved. Think of the cows and trees that perished for the interior.
saw you at GAD a few weeks ago! just didn't realize it til it was too late! glad to see you're doing so well!
Damn that would’ve been a sweet car all fixed and running
Well CRAP! Was really hoping you'd see this one through... such a sweet car.
John, do a SPITE FIX. It might be expensive....DUH!....but fix it and throw their stupidity in their face. 😁😁
In this Biden economy? Yeah right...
This is not Curb Your Enthusiasm last time I checked.
Good CGI on blurring your shirt in this episode. Unreal skillz!
He's folding on the relatively quite presentable Jaguar, but that beat to hell, pooped-in Escalade is the keeper for the channel?
I really would suck bricks at this You Tube thing!
exactly, I never understand why youtubers disregard jags, they really think their viewers don’t care about them, or the “grandpa car” trope.
GO FOR IT! What'll it cost? Some oil, a little bit of RTV, a gasket or two? The big outlay for the new tensioners and chains has already been paid for!
You can't get rid of a car that lets you operate the windows with the door key :) Pls keep going :)
I kinda think your dad respects your decision making ability but that he would not give up. I could easily tell that when he took the job to fix that crusher, it seemed impossible to me but he didn’t give up easily. And his previous experience gave him the confidence needed to succeed. I love it when you win!
Don't stop believing, hold on to that feeling...or just give up...whatever you want, no pressure.
I see what you did there...
Too bad your giving up. Wish to see this one back on the road.
Sounds like a job for Hoovie and the Wiiiizard
Cruising in an XJ. is something special. Everyone has a BMW or Mercedes, Jaguars are just so smooth and classy, keep trying to get this one running. It is a great chance to learn what it ls like to work on a Jag.
So I think you should put it aside and you should fix it and be the second Jag that I watch you fixed
I'd honestly love to save it... but I need my garage back and the police will come for it outside 😢
@@WatchJRGo Storage building rebuild ? :D
Dear boy, you should consider setting up a British version of Johny's workshop. Kansas City deserves well maintained Jags.
Just LS swap it. Boom problem solved
And cheaply, they make kits...
That would be pretty awesome
Bloke has form LS swapping with British classic cars. Didn’t work last time, car just disappeared. Disappointing result.
Love seeing British car on your channel 🏴
Bore scope to confirm. If no damage, fix it. You obviously have new parts. Lol
No need, a compression check is plenty, & the fact cranking evenly once the oil had circulated, then ran ok when it did start, means the valves are very probably all fine.
Even easier, use a leakdown gauge to check for leaking valves.
From the sound of the crank, I believe it can be retimed. I don’t suspect bent valves. Complete tear down and reassembly should work.
Everyone together now,
“Retime that engine!”
Your thumbnail pic is the perfect image of most Jag owners
*We know you can fix the timing no problem :3*
damn. was hoping to see her ride again. its the same color as my 84 VDP. of course I dropped a 350/350 chevy in mine and she ran like a top for years. (and that's just an assumption...) with the 350/350 conversion, I wouldn't be surprised if it's still turning heads somewhere.
this old jag deserves another chance. someone warm up the paddles.... CLEAR! call House!!!
good luck JR!
Would have loved to see you repair this car.
It's been a lot of years since I rebuilt an OHC engine with roller timing chains but I doubt that it is a huge task for someone with your skills to remove the chains, correctly align the camshafts with the crankshaft and reinstall the chains. I'm willing to pop some popcorn and watch as you do it. It would provide an incentive to watch your channel.
Hoovie: I bought the cheapest 1999 Jag in the country!
This Jag would be an awesome LS swap. Would love to have a mild LS in that car!!
Was hoping to see you fix this thing please don't sell it
“And now you know…the REST of the story!” 😎
Old school reference 💯
@@WatchJRGo I do my best. Hope you can get the Jag up and running soon. 😁
Cmon lets go the extra mile and retime this engine would love to see it cruising down the road!!
I totally agree the potential for a boat anchor. Yet I’d be very curious to see if the timing is corrected w all new guides and chain. If it would really function.
Just hold onto it and finish it at a later date. It's such a nice car and you have done a lot of work on cars worse than this. You can do it!!!
Well, So now you know what to do, it's in the garage, Just do it...JUST...DO IT.
I know you hate the thoughts of dumping more time and money into it but man was I hoping to see this Jag come back to life
Don't give up fix it.
It must be bad is this the first time JR gave up on fixing a car? Been watching the channel for a long time don't think I saw him give up. Closest I think was the 300z but he figured it out. Oh well interested in seeing what comes next.
disappointed here too... this is a great series for the channel, not just if you can flip it. the mystery is great... would be cool to get to the bottom of it. re-time the engine, then do compression test... stop there if dead holes, ok
JR to the rescue with regular uploads.... The best 🤙
Happy to see you back in the original shop and making great material
You do you JR, you know better how you should run your own channel than random viewers who don't pay for their content.
Car share. Get Ninja to fix it for 50 percent driving . You already got the parts. Winter beater. Get some second hand Mud And snows..next problem odd brakes. Thought this was a car show.
You still shouldn’t give up on this car. I would think it a challenge to go in and repair the horrendous previous work.
Ship it to Vice Grip Garage, Derek could turn that little project into a real going to town rig
Just put it aside & re-do the timing it when you can get hold of the tools & have time to fit it in, should only take a couple of hours. The valves are obviously all fine as it ran evenly when it did run, you can always do a compression check to make 100% sure.
He has no room for it.
park it outside or something
@@h7pubg He already has too many outside. He mentioned that in a previous video. Maybe he has space somewhere else, but I think he just wants it gone.
@@firesurfer I`m sure he could put it somewhere, he has space most of us can only dream of.
@@h7pubg Exactly, surely he has a friend or family members driveway/field/barn he can dump it in for a month or 3.
By 1999, Ford owned Jag and the quality of things like electronics improved ten fold. I've been researching XK8's and the instrument clusters have Ford stickers all over them.
The research I've found says you can just replace the top tensioner and improve the system.
The good news is resting the timing is cheap and only cost time.
🤦♂️ are you throwing the towel for some timing? 😂
Yes, I don't have a shop and I can't even walk around this car in my garage 🤷♂️
@@WatchJRGo literally just retime it, can’t believe you’re giving up, we will support the content you make off of it too. we actually want to see jag content, every youtuber doing german car content is getting old
So sad
1. Previous mechanic messed it up.
2. A better mechanic unmesses it up.
If the juice is worth the squeeze I suppose keep at it, weather it's views/ads or it's resale value. I am interested in this other crazy car you bought.
Looks like a job for Weird Beard. He'd probably love working on this thing.
