Hi Randy....A quick heads up The ZF transmission in that cool old Jag will go to limp mode with a low-capacity battery which will cause bad shifting bad enough to cause an owner to panic sell. So a dead battery will indeed put up a trouble code in the same way as BMW's go to "transmission protection" mode.
Save that Jag!!! Do a collaboration with JR, MWM, and Santa’s workshop… you gonna let a transmission stop you from having one of the coolest Jags EVER???
@@mikalnaylor damn… some heros don’t wear capes… or DO you???? Mwuh huh huh!!! (Sinister laughter, I think I messed it up but you get the idea… 😄). I’m definitely no mechanic but I was a huge car nut in my younger days. That Jag is freaking cool AF and in really nice condition.
This isn't the Super V8 model. That would have more plush seating and chrome everywhere on the outside including grill surround and bootlid trim. The grille surround would also be fluted or rippled and not plain. It would also have matchwood inlays in the walnut dash and door trims and the steering wheel vinyl would be matched to the transmission tunnel vinyl trim. These are XJR specific wheels and the steering wheel is embossed with XJR on the horn pad and black in colour as XJR standard. This is not a LWB car. This is a XJR.
Wow. I'm a Jag guy and I love to see the excitement here on your channel. Lots of good tips. The bushings on the front shock tops are common and an easy fix. If this was closer to me in VA I would buy it. Great candidate.
The Jag is worth picking up, it’s low production it’s fairly rare and it’s worth seeing if it is just a battery issue could be just that the fluid needs to be changed out that I found on one of the newer ex JR‘s or if it has a transmission leak, the fluid could be low, which can also cause a problem. Focus a little more in cars in less on trucks. Think you’ll find it more interesting flips.
As I`ve told you before, when they`ve had a dead battery, X308 Jags ALWAYS throw fault codes like that up, it usually take 3 or 4 run & drive cycles to clear them. Its unusual for the (Mercedes) trans to die on these, unlike the non-supercharged ones, & that one went straight into gear, so probably fine... That looks like a decent, honest one, I`d be all over it, as a decent one like that with no rust easily get £7-10k here in the UK, & the door can be swapped in a couple of hours, the immobiliser chip in that key is either dead or needs reprogramming. Given it looks like its been sat for years, I`m amazed the fuel pumps weren't seized, it wants to live & obliterate Mustangs again... Oh, & the cubby hole in the engine bay is for the optional tool kit.
What Robb said. If you can get the Jag battery to charge all the way up, you might clear the faults and be fine. I had one of these cars that a shop put the wrong battery in and it caused the trans fault. Took it to the dealer and they put a proper battery in it, cleared the codes, away I went.
Lift the lid on the small fuse box at 1:19 when you say "I think Mice" the jump start connection is in there , the tool kit is missing from the other side lid you lifted, and those sponge type bushing on top of the shock absorbers just disintegrate on their own but are very cheap and easy to replace . and the fuel filler has a little stick up drain filter, take it out and tap it to clean it .
If the Jag goes for a super cheap price, buy it. It would be worth seeing if the battery is the cause of the transmission issue. What a win it would be if the battery ends up being the problem. It's been sitting for awhile so it can sit a little longer until you have time for it. Oh and the sticker on the Nitro is a pride flag sticker
Tray under the hood a a tool kit in the UK, storage in the US. Shock tower bushings just dry out and crumble, likely not mice. The supercharger belt is inside out BTW, ribs should be facing in. I had the same issue on my XJR, one key just stopped working. Restricted performance is likely an intake, vacuum issue or oil in the spark plug wells. Trans fault may be the electrical connector, O-ring wears out. Trans electric board is also a common 580 problem. Both relatively easy to work on. I have 3 all daily drivers, they are pretty solid with the right maint. Gotta do the timing chain guides though, upgrade to aluminum.
Man, that Jaguar XJR looks like a great project. First time I've seen your videos. I would be tempted to bid on it, but unfortunately for me, I'm in Idaho. It would be a 3,000-mile round-trip, (approximately), for me. I hope someone wins the auction for it, and can grab it for cheap.
The XJR is my favourite type of Jaguar cars especially the models made through the 80's and early 90's, a black one with the full leather interior and wood dash to me is one of the classiest long distance driving machine's ever built!

It's one of those things that doesn't quite translate through a picture. I also had one of the next version that started in '04, the x350 platform. Major departure from the previous years was an aluminum body and frame for weight reduction and strength, active air suspension, stretching the 4.0l engine to a 4.2l, and ditching the ol reliable merc 5 speed trans for a new zf 6 speed. It was faster and more refined, but the old school x308 version like the one you looked at always got more attention than the newer x350 at stoplights and such. Common problem areas were the timing chain guides and tensioner before the '02 model esp. They also have the dreaded "hose of death", a rubber hose that carries coolant to heat the throttle body. Idiot engineers ran it underneath the intake manifold. Not a big deal on the normally aspirated engine, but a huge pain on the supercharged version in the xjr. It will go bad and you will be removing the supercharger to fix it. Loved my x308 xjrs though. Wish I would have been able to keep one. The 493hp 2004 mercedes s55 that took their place 4 years back helped with the separation though lol. She's still my daily driver.

That was fun to watch , first time seeing a vid like this . ty for the content . Jags in the UK sell for great money as they are considered a prestige car just expensive to maintain and parts are high cost as well and with our fuel costs they tend to be sold to enthusiasts .
The Jaguar is nice but I know they can be a headache. The Chevy Silverado looks great. The Buick Century in front of the Silverado and the Grand Marquis behind it look a bit rough. The F150 would be good too. Like you said, the parts alone. The tail lights alone would pay for what you paid for it. I understand they are very expensive and hard to find. The Nitro is nice. I see the Honda Insight is still there. Something 100 % Jake could use. Randy, great video as always. Thank you for taking us along for the walk around.
Buy the Jag! Buy the Chevy truck for sure. If I win an auction for a specific price, I am not paying more. The goal for me is to pay as little as I can and if no one else is willing to bid more then that should be the final price unless we are notified it is a reserve auction then I probably won't bid.
Everyone swaps out a Chevy 350 in those Jaguars, just because the Jaguar engines are an absolute bear to work on and parts are through the roof. The look of the car is beautiful. If you go back and look at a vintage TV series, that was "The Equalizer" car. I like the silver Mercury Grand Marquis with the droopy rear end behind that Chevy truck you looked T after the Jaguar I'd switch out the air shocks for springs and shocks. Maybe a couple hundred for the parts, and an easy swap. It'd be an interesting installation video too - people love those Platform cars (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car) 👍🇺🇸😎

I am thinking mabey it needs the transmission needs the trans fluid changed. The transmission level is checked via the ECU data port. Transmission is possibly a ZF Gear unit.
Jaguar are reliable and the XJR engine is very reliable for that year if it has oil and water. But you do need a battery with full capacity to maintain all the electronics correctly. A low battery will throw up a load of fault codes.
XJR is the mesh grill. That is a Ford V8 with a Supercharger. I have had a few XJ6, XJ8 Vanden Plas, but never a XJR. Trouble comes with the Jaguar but its like that girl you dated and you knew she would be trouble but no man can resist her charms until she ups and leaves you all alone.
G'evening Randy 🤠 . That ol' Chevy truck is super clean & would make for a great long term get around & work / tow rig. The Jag will be a cheap & nice sleeper & could be a Lotta ffun 😎
Given how long it had been sitting, I'm amazed the battery was still good enough to spin up the engine. Used to see a lot of these in our local scrapyard (UK) they rust terribly. I think all Jags do - in our weather anyhow.
I know you aren’t a big fan of Toyota, but I happen to notice the silver Camry next to the white F-150 that you looked at in this video. Can you please do a walk around on that car. I love the Camry, especially the 5th Generation (XV30) I actually own one very similar to the one in the video, so I would like to see a review of that one please and thank you! Keep up with the great videos too!
Wow ... the XJR brings up memories ... my father in law bought it new to repleace his Daimler double six ... those were the days ... absolute BEAST in its days. Most propably today. He could afford the service - not mentioning the price tag on these beauties. I had a Golf GT MK2 at that time :)
Online auctions will also bid against you like in the foreclosure auctions for home. You are actually bidding against the company many times and not an individual as they try to run the price up on you.
heads up on the Jag. the 4.0 used single cam chains and garbage plastic tensors. These were later fix in th 4.2 engines. I doubt that the tranny is bad if it has less then 100K miles.

You should consider purchasing the XJR. It seems in really nice shape.
Love that jag and that 98 ck1500 and would you be able to check out that buick century at 10:25
That Jag is a keeper. 400hp of brit fun. Will need all rubber bushes renewed though.
Thanks
Thank you!
I am thinking mabey it needs the transmission needs the trans fluid changed. The transmission level is checked via the ECU data port. Transmission is possibly a ZF Gear unit.
Mercedes gearbox in the supercharged xj's.
Jaguar are reliable and the XJR engine is very reliable for that year if it has oil and water. But you do need a battery with full capacity to maintain all the electronics correctly. A low battery will throw up a load of fault codes.
Save it. They’re not a nightmare. They’re pretty reliable.
Jessica is your voice of reason Randy 🎉
I know you aren’t a big fan of Toyota, but I happen to notice the silver Camry next to the white F-150 that you looked at in this video. Can you please do a walk around on that car. I love the Camry, especially the 5th Generation (XV30)
I actually own one very similar to the one in the video, so I would like to see a review of that one please and thank you! Keep up with the great videos too!
Get the Jag!! That would be the best deal you have had!!
Last of the beautiful classic jags ♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍
Wow ... the XJR brings up memories ... my father in law bought it new to repleace his Daimler double six ... those were the days ... absolute BEAST in its days.
Most propably today. He could afford the service - not mentioning the price tag on these beauties. I had a Golf GT MK2 at that time :)
Online auctions will also bid against you like in the foreclosure auctions for home. You are actually bidding against the company many times and not an individual as they try to run the price up on you.
The XJR is beautiful! It is my favorite after the XJ Super.
That jag engine is going for 3k by itself. Just a heads up
The jaguar is a must
heads up on the Jag. the 4.0 used single cam chains and garbage plastic tensors. These were later fix in th 4.2 engines. I doubt that the tranny is bad if it has less then 100K miles.
GET THE JAG, YOU NEED THIS ON YOUR CHANNEL
