NASCAR's First Cup Rain Race

- Опубликовано: 20 мар 2024
- For the better part of 76 years now NASCAR has not raced in the rain, and even when they have it was done sparingly. Yet in the 2020s NASCAR has tried to curb Mother Nature's push against their events, and at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in 2021 NASCAR's limits were tested as they basically had a live race test session of their wet weather package. This also was the inaugural COTA race, and NASCAR's first Cup rain race.

What’s the craziest race you have attended?
My first, 2022 Talladega Spring. My favorite driver won, and there was no McDowell Supremacy!
I was at the Bristol race this past weekend and the hail melon race probably between those two
This past weekends Bristol Race. Was absolutely wild to be there to see it!
2018 Chicago, 2019 July Daytona
2017 Brickyard 400
I know I’m getting old when I get nostalgic for this race and how chaotic it was.
I dont think im that old yet but i still get crazy nostalgic over 2021 just because I really liked that year.
This happened 3 years ago 💀
Next they should do a thunderstorm race or a race during a tornado warning
2021 was such a great season I get so nostalgic for
@@MA-df6pjIt already happened. Look up the 2012 Pennsylvania 400.
I hated that race had to end early. But I understood their reason if the rain wasn't going to let up before nightfall.
NASCAR's first Cup race held in the rain was at Road America in 1956, won by Tim Flock in his 39th and final win.
Well, NASCAR hates road america for some reason so I guess it doesn't count lol
@@awowadas It's not that Nascar Hates road America. They added the street course and in turn had to take one off to replace it with. Since Road America had the worst ratings it just made since.
@@kyleraymer5581 which is a shame, because the track nearly sells out the entire weekend every time they came.
A shame a world class track is replaced by a cut rate street circuit.
@@awowadas Unfortunately tickets sold aren't where the real money comes from. TV ratings have become all that really matters anymore in really any sport.
Cup raced in the rain at roval 2020 that’s how MBM nearly won a stage
I remember this race wild doesn't even begin to describe it
This has got me hyped for this weekend, going to COTA with dad for our first in person NASCAR race
I was at that race and didn’t realize I bought standing room only tickets. We sat in the grass in turn 1 and you can see us in the broadcast every once in a while. I still remember my mom sitting in the grass with her poncho on in the rain watching them fly off into the craziest turn 1 in nascar at the moment
As an American, can confirm no one knows how to drive in the rain
Formula 1 has often races in the wet. They have real strong back lights, clear red flickering
It would have been fitting if COTA, Martinsville, and TexARSE swapped dates and raced on Monday to coincide with the Texan eclipse of April. All the malfunctions would drive everyone crazy
Yeah but we are too close to the day of the race now.
Craziest race I ever attended was the 2011 IndyCar race at New Hampshire. I was there for every session, and it was wild seeing those crazy machines whipping it around my home track. Crazy crashes, broken limbs, great racing, so much happened, and 6 year old me had an absolute blast
It's one thing to race in the wet. It's another entirely to race in a heavy downpour, and NASCAR learned that way that was a bad idea. You'd think that F1 racing during a typhoon in Japan and having Jules Bianchi lose his life would have taught the major racing series a lesson.
NASCAR doesn't like to learn lessons from other racing series.
@@FallingPicturesProductionsNASCAR doesn’t like to learn lessons from its own racing divisions
@@alexotero7105 @FallingPicturesProductions Touché.
Yeah if F1 cars can't race in a downpour, what makes you think a stock car could?
@@CruzTucker I mean they do have windshields and go alot slower, but they also don't have the same braking power and downforce I guess so idk.
Its really hilarious to see how the nascar drivers struggle with normal racing :)
first they gotta drive round corners, and now in the rain!!!????
What's next, driving at night?! Poor nascar drivers.
you've got like 2 meters vision with all the spray and cars with no lights. racing at any speed is pretty much impossible
NASCAR cars are absolute dogs to drive on a road course even in a sim like I do, let alone IRL, let alone on COTA (a track specifically designed for very high downforce formula cars), let alone in the rain. It's honestly a miracle that anyone could even complete a lap with a Cup car on COTA with conditions like that.
What's really hilarious is people who watch Verstappen Cup I mean F1
i went in 23, probably the coolest nascar race i’ve ever seen. i’ve always wanted to see roadcourse race and that was a good first one
Im new to your channel and have been a casual NASCAR fan since I was a kid, but only really got into it in the last 3-4 years. Loving the content.
Ik this is long but bare with me.
I think something to note on this too, this was around the time when motorsports as a whole was starting to realize what the limit was when racing in the rain. Like for NASCAR this was the race where they realized that there’s only so much standing water on the racing surface that’ll say when enough is enough. And even before with Xfinity Series there were even crazy rain races before even Cup’s first wet weather race at the Charlotte Roval in 2020. The absolute monsoon with the 2020 Xfinity race at Charlotte Roval, even watching the IMSA GT race that was rescheduled from I believe Lime Rock Park due to papa Rona was interesting to watch them race a flooded track. Or before with the 2016 Mid-Ohio Xfinity race where it was an absolute monsoon with rain, and before that with NASCAR first ever rain race at Montreal in 2008. The race ended early cause the conditions worsened and cars were spinning or wrecking everywhere. And again not to mention every other motorsport going through the same deal. 2021 Belgian GP couldn’t even get going cause of the blinding conditions where even under pace laps drivers from 2nd on back couldn’t see a thing. Which was more so to do with the fact that it was the start of the race where cars r bunched up, had it been under green it would’ve been fine. Same deal with 2022 Watkins Glen Cup, but the thing with F1, they also never want a repeat of the 2014 Japanese GP. IMSA kinda had the same deal in the 2020 race at Road America. The last like hour or so of the race, it started raining heavy, but only in certain sections of the track. Ya know that classic deal. And once most of the track was engulfed in heavy rain, there were still cars riding out on slicks trying to see how far they could go. And then one of the Porsche 911 GTEs lost in going into T1 and went hard into the tire barrier where IMSA threw the red flag. And with NASCAR now racing on short ovals in the wet, it’ll be interesting to see how for wet racing can go. Especially since NASCAR can definitely race on a little bit more wet track than they think. And while people wonder why motorsports can’t race in very wet, monsoon conditions, I think iRacing has given a more insight look as to why motorsports can’t race in massively raining conditions since they now have the best and accurate rain racing physics in any racing game/sim. It’s absolutely difficult, and ya can’t see anything which every irl driver on iRacing has said how accurate it is to real life. There’s conditions where it’s just not doable. This isn’t 1960s/70s where ya got Jackie Stewart racing around the Nordschliefe in blinding conditions and just playing the guessing game.
go watch a WEC race. they dont care about rain
@@liquidfiretibby I do watch WEC. And yes they do. Same way as every motorsports. Le Mans last year is a big example. It’s honestly the exact same deal as Road America 2020 for IMSA. Ya got mixed conditions and then the track gets fully wet, cars r still on track with slicks, Porsche 911 goes straight into the barrier hard in T1. Le Mans ya got mixed conditions, rain gets heavier in the Porsche Curves, a number of cars start sliding around and crashing, hell one of the GTE Ferraris almost goes full speed into the parked Glickenhaus, and Safety Car is deployed. Hell there’s even a shot of a LMP2 exiting the Porsche Curves with heavy hydroplaning and lots of water coming off the tires. So yes, they do care.
I was at this race in 2021 and turn 12 was the best seats that weekend!
Had seats in Turn 12 but went over to turn 15 seats. I didnt mind the view of 12 but hated the bleacher seats lol. 15 had actual seats. I will be going this Sunday. It was crazy to see Kyle and Kurt almost collide in person lol
I was drenched at the Chicago street race last year me and my dad were waiting it out on the corner of turns 1 and 6 in ankle deep water. There was no shelter accept for one over crowded beer tent and our folding chairs sunk a few inches into the mud.
YOU'VE BEEN HIT BY
YOU'VE BEEN STRUCK BY
COLE CUSTER
Yeah. Throw out all those who can't stop playing dodgem cars. It's not necessary or sporting.
This was my first in person NASCAR race. It was pretty awesome.
I was at this race sitting at turn one, tons of people busted ass and the grass parking lots were even worse. It was my 21st birthday weekend and I had a great time but damn it was miserable out there
Besides the terrible chaos and crashes, in terms of the racing product, it was good!
Dude I was In turn 1 that race it was fun but surprisingly dry after that first bit
I was at the coca-cola 600 when Dale Jr ran out of gas in turn 3. Still the craziest race I've seen. We were sitting in the old backstretch seats!
Nice, live in KY and remember clearly
@kennethburns6064 wish I was older at the time to appreciate it more, but ill never forget the whole backstretch going nuts as Jr was leading
For the question, i wanna say Dover 2022. We got rained out lap 78! It was a bummer but it was fun too to see Chase Elliott take the checkered
Craziest race I’ve ever attended might be the 2021 Daytona RC. Everything was business as usual until NASCAR threw the infamous rainbow caution. Then things got super chaotic
i was there too
I don't like rain delays...But I do like races in the rain,
This race was amazing, i was able to go on Saturday and it was just a preamble to what would happen (especially in the truck race) chaos is fun
I was at this race in person and woah buddy was it a nightmare. It was a mud fest. I fell twice on the turn one hill
I’m from Australia and have been lucky enough to attend two NASCAR events. The first was Phoenix Chase race 2013, the second was the Fourth of July Daytona race in 2015. So, I’ll let you work which was the crazy one 🙂
That race looked like the old game show double dare it was super messy.
I'll be at COTA this Sunday and my seat will be at the Turn 15 grandstand!! Hope to see someone there!!!! See y'all there!!! I'm definitely gonna have a BLAST since my last NASCAR Cup race at Texas in April 2012!!!
Considering I've only been to one race I can say it was the most crazy race I've been to, which was when Aric Almirola won at NHMS. Although it did have some drama with a wet track to start the racing taking out Kyle Busch, KB then ramming the pace car, and then a shortened race because of lack of daylight.
it makes me pissed at motorsport games because that year i was so excited to run the first rain race in a nascar videogame for the first time and the trailers made 21 ignition look cool as hell just for nascar 21 ignition to not have rainy weather at cota when the game came out (on top of the many other problems being mentioned in every nascar 21 ignition review on youtube at the time)
yes that was one crazy race. They learned alot from it tho.
I was there the whole weekend camping outside the long stretch. Sure, the rain sucked, but the people there and their enthusiasm made it worth it. We haven’t missed a NASCAR race weekend there since and already reserved next years tickets.
There's a difference in racing in the wet and racing in the rain. Once visibility starts dropping and theres standing water, they should red flag the race just out of safety.
That being said, racing when it's wet or even a light rain makes road courses in NASCAR much more entertaining. I'm glad to see NASCAR adding more road courses to the schedule as the years go on. It can really showcase the skills of different drivers.
if they continue this trend then maybe one day nascar drivers can be competitive in anyother racing series
I was there. Top of 15. Towards the end the water was foot deep off the grandstands. Never been so wet in my life…. But AWESOME to be a part of!
Xfinity roval 2020 is the best race of all time IMO
I just thought it was funny that they allowed downpour races during Mid Ohio and The Roval for xfinity. Then the moment the cup guys get to do it, the mindset does a 180 where we can't even race in rain. Only in damp.
I'm so glad they've added more road races.
I remember watching the first Cup rain race and I did enjoy the first race at COTA: Chaos of the Americas!
This is an all time banger
Meanwhile here in the UK... we once had a dry race, but that was a long long time ago
Craziest race i ever attended has to be the 2022 wise power 400 NG crazyness 5 wide restarts tire problems and larson pulling off the pass on suarez on the apron with under 5 to go i think that was crazy
Most fun race i've ever been too. Was up in turn 12 and had all the action right in front of me.
It was a chaotic race to say the least
We all know the reason was because Chase was in the lead
I was at that race also. I couldn’t believe how many people were at the race that day.
When they announced the date for this race, I though WTF are they thinking?! If they consulted any local meteorologist, they would know, as any Austinite does, that Memorial Day weekend is the rainiest weekend of the year. It's almost like 50/50 storms happening. Glad they learned their lesson and moved it to March.
Craziest race I've ever attended is a toss-up between the October 2011 Martinsville race and the 2022 Coca-Cola 600. Both were bangers, those seeing Brian Vickers wrecking everything but the pace car in person was hilarious to see. Especially when Matt Kendeth had enough and just f****** wreck him
Hold on, let me get this straight. NASCAR drivers are lost when they have to drive on tracks and in conditions that the rest of the motor sport world deals with every day? I'm shocked.
I was there at turn 1. I loved the whole weekend. I too was just soaked from head to toe. The only bummer was when they called the race with I think was 6 to go. Still loved the experience tho.
I think NASCAR needs to learn how is done in the rain by looking at IMSA races…they know how to do it right
I was also there for this race. We sat on the front stretch and got rained on all day.
The rain race I could remember was 2008 Nationwide Montreal when Stan Barrett spun in the rain twice under caution.
Canadian Motorsports park the truck race when there was the fight. Forget the year off the top of my head
It was so bizarre and weird
I attended the martinsville race where denny threw a hissy fit about bowman doing a bump and run, and acting like he never dump and runned chase 2 years prior
👏 TAIL 👏 LIGHTS 👏
What has been Your Favorite NASCAR Race at COTA so far? 😁
The craziest race I’ve ever been to was the 2022 Cup race at Watkins Glen (Rain Race).
Man when you showed yourself in the beginning of the video I’ve got to say you definitely had the Austin Dillon look going on 😂
“Road course king” 😂😂🤡🤡
NASCAR: we are manly
Also NASCAR: ballet in the rain
Lotta spots at COTA with no safer barrier
What's your point? It's a road course, and has the FIA grade 1 safety rating for F1. Daytona is a grade 2, Watkins Glen is either a 2 or a 3. RoadAmerica and mid Ohio are also 3. While the FIA is messed up as munch as NASCAR. They care a lot more about drivers safety
What's your point? It's a road course, and has the FIA grade 1 safety rating. Meaning it's considered one of the safest race track in the world. Most nascar tracks are a two or three. The ovals arnt even rated.
The best race i have been too was bristol 2021
I was there too and do not remember it at all minus the wreck which took out Harvick. Then I left.
NASCAR, the only series that wouldn't drive in the wet, makes me extremely happy to see NASCAR raise the bar and join all others that race in the wet.
There was never any reason not to do it, other than the Drivers not wanting to do it.
Shoutout to Kurt Busch from this race, he almost got stuck in the gravel trap after missing the corner but had the presence of mind to stay in the gas and get himself out of it, iirc the race ended under the red flag shortly after that
The craziest race I’ve ever attended was the 2018 Chicagoland speedway race
Didn't they used to run in the rain back in the late '90s and early '00's?
There were rain tires available that NASCAR and Goodyear had developed but they were never used. The same tires were dragged from race to race for several years before finally being retired.
Nascar on road courses: It's like racing, but in slow motion. 😂
Naaaascar, racing without rainlight is insane to me. F1, gt sport, indycar, formula 2,3,e and superformula etc have lights at the back for the rain. Ofc you dont see them if its as heavy as here. But you will see them if a car is directly infront of you giving you a Chance to avoid that car. But tbh i still say at least for the formula cars that they should have extra lights on the sidepots so that you dont tbone someone. Because thouse crashes are deadly specially in formula cars
2012 Daytona 500 was the craziest race I’ve attended
they need better lighting on these cars for the rain and mudflags LOL
Here's a rule change I'd love to see: teams should be allowed to work on the cars during a red flag. If I have to sit in the rain waiting for the race to restart, I want the cars to hit that green flag HARD with fresh tires and repairs.
Craziest race I’ve ever attended kind of depends on what you’re talking about. In the absolute worst way possible, it’s easily the 2008 Brickyard, which I don’t need to explain. In a more general way, I’d probably have to say the 2017 Brickyard. The race itself was an absolute crash fest that had three red flags, one for weather in the first stage and two for crashes in the third, and by the time the race ended, almost seven hours later, it was so dark, which did not come across on the TV coverage at all, I was legitimately starting to have issues seeing turn 4 from where I sit (the turn 1 penthouse area, which gives me a perfect view down the front stretch). I know the finish was controversial, due to when they put out the final caution, but they were never going to be able to get another restart in, no matter what they did.
The first Next Gen race at COTA was absolutely awful. Every restart had 5+ spins and the caution came out and so on.
fun fact the nascar wet tires are more usefull than f1 wet tires
technically it wasnt the first single file start since 09
they also had them at bristol dirt that year
iracing rain visibility is real. Cant see anything front
I went to this race and took my daughter. She is vehemently against road course racing because we got SOAKED that day lol. Good memories tho.
Anyone other than me recognize the backround music from NASCAR 06: Total Team Control? Not to mention that I have it for the Xbox and play it on my Xbox 360 because the Xbox version works on the Xbox 360
That race was beyond dangerous. That hit with custer and mtj was bad. The on board camera had almost no visibility. I'm fine with racing in some rain, but not racing blind.
i'm going to cota this year, hopefully it doesn't rain again
The race where Hendrick Motorsports tied Petty Enterprises as The Winningest Organization in NASCAR in Chase Elliott's hands
Fast Forward 1 week and that said tie would get broken in Kyle Larson's hands
Rain races seem fun af, but yea no visibility makes it too dangerous
I remember wanting rain, but not like that
NASCAR in the wet on a road course is one of those things that puzzles me, simply because it feels like it runs counter to everything NASCAR. Not just that, but I wonder about tire degradation on those heavy stock cars, plus how awful they'd handle on a road course, let alone a wet road course.
You need Australian Supercar drivers. They race in the rain regularly. SVG very good in the rain.
Not NASCAR but last year's Indy 500 with the one lap dash for the trophy.
Almost forgot about the Mickey rain race
nobody makes sausage in the rain like nascar.
I'm really wondering what they did in the past to avoid rain - postpone the race for however long it will take?
i was pissed they red flagged it6 after truex i was like this is greatest thing ever
I’m a little old school when it comes to nascar. First off is there should be no racing at all in the rain.
I wish NASCAR did single file restarts again when races go "too crazy" to calm the racing down and not make everything into crapshoots
0:25 my dumbass thought this was a cat getting run over bro😭😭☠️
