I was at a bar 2 weeks ago when i quit my job, i was just drinking and thinking about what i had always wanted to do if i had free time.
then a musician came in and started to play a banjo. i studied at Texas A&M and the banjo really bought back some great happy memories. the upbeat sound and brisk notes! i just said thats it! i want to learn the banjo! and in my drunken state just bought a random 4 string banjo from amazon (i actually wanted the 5 string bluegrass banjo but i didnt know lol)
Now i am picking between learning Irish Tenor or Dixie Jazz. you sir had convinced me to learn the Irish Tenor style!
Brilliant it’s great fun to play!
Great move. I did the same but got a five string and after 2 years can knock out songs of Appalachia. A very rewarding instrument
Incredible player. Wow every time I hear Fergal I realize I have much much practise to do. He has truly set the bar very high we'll done Fergal 😉
paul doyle thanks.
Nothing sounds as good as a banjo played well and boy do you play it well.
Kevin Baddeley thanks! Appreciate it
I went from the great Luke Kelly playing Raglan Road live, to this! Man this is awesome! Thank you!
Thank you too
This is rad. I'm learning this instrument, so cool. Someday, I'll have triplets like that. Great job man, thanks for sharing!
Anthony Reilly thanks
❤ Love your work Fergal. Perth West Australia
Thanks very much glad you enjoyed.
My ex-husband and I have always been wanting to visit Ireland. It's culture is amazing. Seeing this beautiful views make me feel that maybe I should have been born in Europe ❤
I got lost on youtube but damn that was good
Valentin Gonzalez glad you found it and enjoyed it! Thanks
I have been listening to 3 years now, each time I like it more than the last. Just amazing sir.
Thanks very much it’s great to know you keep enjoy it for so long.
I’m still about it. This is just a wonderful tune
And to think that I've 'wasted' over 45 years playing the five-string banjo when all this time I could have been perfecting my craft on the four-string Irish banjo. It's makes a grown man want to openly weep in disgust. (By the way, Fergal, your playing is sublime.)
Dean thanks. I love the sound of 5 string banjo!!
Astonishing, made my day! Keep it up!
Aladria thanks glad you enjoyed it

@@D-ster if you go to the session.org there’s a version added to the tunes section it’s not tabs but it’s a good transcription of the basic tune.

frank mcalinden thanks!! 👍
This is my kind of music
I'm late to finding this, but was some filmed in Wexford by any chance? I was there several years ago for a painting festival, and it looked familiar.
Hi Elaine. Yes this is all in Wexford Town
@@fergalohanlonmusic I loved it there, and enjoy keeping up with some of the people I met. Hoping for the day when I can come back. Slainte!
Great song!!! 😻
Top class playing.
Brilliant playing Fergal. Hope you're keeping well. Which Clareen banjo is that ?
Hi Spencer. It’s a Setanta Nickel, with an all maple construction
@@fergalohanlonmusic Great sound to it.
Great!! 😍👏
Super banjo playing here , live to learn that tune superb , is that a Clareen Banjo Fergal?
James Flanagan hi. Yeah that’s my Clareen Setanta. Had it custom made in 2013. It’s in all the videos just with different heads from time to time. Cheers
@@fergalohanlonmusic you are some player man how long are you playing? Those triplets are insane 😃
James Flanagan about 11 years when it was recorded. I was playing a lot of banjo at the time. Nowadays not so much so don’t know if i could even play this today
@@fergalohanlonmusic wow get that banjo back in your hands be an awful shame , are you an all Ireland champion? I'm out looking for a good banjo if ya have any advice I'm playing one a few months now but the one I have is too flat.
James Flanagan depends on the budget you have but Clareen banjos is worth a call as they have vintage stuff as well as new. No I never played in Fleadhs solo only a few group competitions. Just wanted to learn for myself really
I'm new to Banjo. How is this tuned?
Fantastic! Is there abc for this on the session? Amazing playing!
What banjo are you playing?
Hi. No I never wrote it down before so there’ll be no notes anywhere for it. Banjo is a Clareen Setanta Nickel
Play it now
Outstanding, I would love to play this on my banjo or at least something like it, do you know what tuning you were in when you made this? If not then what’s the regular tuning for this kind of music?
Thanks. I always use GDAE tuning which is the most commonly used. Some people use CGDA or ADAE too but most of the time it will be GDAE
I love it! i just bought a banjo and am trying to learn, would it be possible to have tabs by any chance? I would love to learn your song!
Hi. I don’t have tabs for this when I composed it I never wrote it down
What model of Clareen banjo are you playing there? Sounds awesome.
Jamie Cooper it’s a Setanta Nickel
@@fergalohanlonmusic Thanks. What make and gauge of plectrum do you use?
Jamie Cooper I like Clayton’s. Usually the Black Raven ones in either 0.50 or 0.63. I used to use the teardrop shape but now I like the larger triangle shape.
@@fergalohanlonmusic Do you give online lessons?
Jamie Cooper not at the moment but will be looking to do so in the future.
Nice.
Brilliant playing, is this in galway?
Hi. Thanks. This is in Wexford Town
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Too much fun! This sounds like it could have been a traditional. Do you think square dances should have a DJ in addition to a caller?
Victor Eijkhout would be interesting to see!! 😊
Thats the beauty of Irish trad, musicians can make a tune their own with ornamentation
I’m learning bluegrass banjo and I’d love to learn this style as well are there any pointers you could give for beginners
Listen to as much music as you can in this style and also Irish music in other instruments too. That way you’ll get a good feel for where to put ornaments etc. Apart from that just very regular practice. Relaxation is very important as it’s ver easy to become tense especially trying to perform triplets and play faster
By any chance do you do banjo lessons?
Not anymore I’m not playing that much banjo these days
Great job dude. Have you used greenscreen in some video parts? And yes, very nice triplets, I really would like to play them once. Regards from Czechoslovakia :)
banjoman80 hi. No green screen. All filmed on location in Wexford town. Thanks
@@fergalohanlonmusic Brilliant work. Keep it up! Cheers with pint of Guinness of course :)
banjoman80 my favourite!
Deadly 👌
Lovely banjo BTW.
Nice one. Cheers!
Best
🙏
Any Chance i could get the notes of this off you?
Damn son
Did you shoot this in Galway?
Faolen Marrok Wexford Town
Where did you shoot this? Is it in Ireland?
Any notes of this tune anywhere, it’s not on the session
Ryan Savage no I never did write it out. I haven’t really played it since I recorded this so even I would have trouble remembering it!
Fergal O'Hanlon yeah suppose it’s been 2 years, it sounds class btw just found it again on my liked videos. Thanks anyway.
Thanks!
Tempted to buy a banjo after watching this to learn and keep me occupied during the covid lockdown
This is brilliant 5 ***** but Barney mckennas banjo solo is the best version
