For all those confidently saying this is GDAE tuning......it's not! He's in CGDA here. No capo, no half steps, just CGDA (yes, standard Irish tuning IS GDAE but he's not using it) Long time banjo player/teacher so trust me, it's CGDA Cheers
Che piacere per le orecchie e la mente sentire suonare il banjo in maniera cosi` eccellente!! Sicuramente il migliore maestro dell`Irlanda di questo strumento che io adoro. Complimenti Gerry. Un tuo fan dalla piccola Svizzera.
Of course, Gerry is marvelous. But I can't help listening to the guitar player. First of all, he is one of very few Irish session guitar players I have noticed who plays in standard tuning. He really makes those bass line stand out. Very chromatic at times, almost (dare I say it?) - bluegrassy!
And Gerry’s playing can show some bluegrass influence. Just listen to that last time through that last tune, and that last closing lick. Love it. I’d like to see him live with WeBanjo3.
The man who takes the jokes out of the banjo-haters! His musicality oozes through everything he does. Took a week-long course with him years ago near Boston. He's as nice a guy as he is a brilliant musician!
@tocotodo Aye, a touch Bluegrassy alright, but then there's a wee touch of the Bluegrass about the way Gerry himself plays ye olde Banjo, don't you think, so perhaps that's why these guys play so well together.
Guitar is good. He doesn't play it like a percussion instrument like some people do. And the standard tuning I think is better. You can play full chords like
If you'd an Irish bone in your body let alone your limp mickey youd know that this is the craic. Cus at least your mini dick championship in the corner with Maura and Mick would stop in appreciation of Gerry O Connor bating out better wrist work youd ever achieve
+Rien Dekker He looks disappointed to find his local pub had been turned into a recording studio when all he wanted to do was get drunk and talk to his mates
+anonymous2513456 Probably the second or third take....there's always great craic (fun) at an Irish Music Session...Also they've been told to "shut up" and not make noise...
A great clean sound. Must be the quitest time the pub ever had when they're all listening respectfully to this great music Thanks for posting :-)
beautiful, seemingly effortless playing yet so brilliant.
There will. Never be another. Gerry. Again. Never. He unreal. Class.
Genius , absolutely loved it , many thanks from England
This was great. Makes me feel like I was there - and makes me want to visit Ireland again.
Gerry's playing is on a whole other level.
I agree..He also plays the fiddle..
Lovely tunes and not swamped with an excess of ornamentation. What an amazing talent Jerry O'Connor is. Another great posting. Many thanks.
Unbelievable techy skills and superb accompaniment too. First-Class. Thanks

Me too...
Ha ha I play the mandolin
fabulous musicianship. Would love to have been there.
The best Irish Tenor banjo player in the world. No one even comes close
Not anymore he's not. Gerry is the man.
Patrick Mac Sweeney Banjo Barney taught Gerry, so it's no wonder you'd make the comparison
+Swordsoffire Kieran Hanrahan has a much better style, also a fast technical player but with more feeling !
I know an Irish bloke called Robin Turner who is not only this bloke's double, but also played this well. Sorry...
Barney Mckenna was the greatest banjo player that ever lived
Gerry took his place in the Dubliners after he died
Quite remarkable and very enjoyable.
Thank you for sharing this great post.
Met him last Saturday omg he’s amazing and such a lovely man
Absolute class, Gerry makes it look so easy

Xxavzyxx, the second tune is The High Drive. It's one of Gordon Duncan's compositions...definitely look him up if you don't know who he is!

Do you know what instrument he is playing? My first guess is a Vega, possibly some variant of Vega-Vox.
It's a Dave Boyle

+Darragh O Shea the first one is George White's Favourite
Excellent stuff. Thanks for posting.
yes, also they are usually 4 string instead of 5, and the tuning is generally GDAE, which is the same as the mandolin and fiddle.
GDAE but one octave lower than mandolin/fiddle.
Snooker has Ronnie O'Sullivan and Irish tenor has Gerry O'Connor... Genius at work!
High drive sounds great on banjo
My favorite banjo song
excellent !
congratulations Mike .
SYL
Great stuff Mike!
George

The Dubs played in standard tuning for the most part.
And Gerry’s playing can show some bluegrass influence. Just listen to that last time through that last tune, and that last closing lick. Love it. I’d like to see him live with WeBanjo3.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐EXCELLENT
Still brilliant!
Nice set
かっこいい、私もバンジョー弾けるようになりたい…
Guy inspired me to actually buy a banjo and start learning. Amazing player!
How are you getting on? Is it hard? I'm thinking of buying one
@@shredder9536 yeah buy one, all music is hard but sure stick at it and you will be good
was actually tryin to play along there. He's tuned a half step above DAEB
Lovely stuff enjoyed that
Bringing out my Irish in me lol love from Victoria Australia 🇭🇲
Effortless, the mark of a world class player
wow! what kind of banjo it that? don't recognize the brand! very good!
lovely stuff ...was this on tv
Hard to believe it`s a 4 stringer..Amazing!
No all Irish banjo's are 4 string
Brilliant!
GREAT BANJO PLAYERS OUT THEIR BUT THIS MANS THE DADDY..
okay then Barney McKennas the King
I believe Gerry sometimes uses GDAE but I think he usually uses jazz standard tuning (CGDA) Capod up to the second fret, so DAEB.
This GDAE so it is

exelent gerry from marcas o'donnell
Terrific! Are you tuning your tenor banjo CGDA? It sounds great.
So if CGDA the fingering and fretting can be adaptable to mandola and tenor guitar and mandocello (but sounds one octave lower for the mandocello).
Those triplets on the banjo...perfection
What about those occasional quintuplets and septuplets tho ;)
Yup
Is that Tommy peoples sitting at the bar behind Gerry?
What tuning is Gerry using here does anyone know
Intoxicating
brilliant..:)
whats the second tune called??
High Drive !
hello, i've enjoyed your channel. Please tell me just out of interest, who's banjo style do you prefer out of barney mckenna and gerry?
Bag O Spuds, classic reel

❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Anyone know what brand of guitar that is?
Nice playing. Is that 19 fret banjo and tuned to CGDA ?
GDAE
It sounds very bright that’s what I thought and he does often play one tunes like that
What tuning is he in, traditional GDAE? Its sounds higher?
@tocotodo Aye, a touch Bluegrassy alright, but then there's a wee touch of the Bluegrass about the way Gerry himself plays ye olde Banjo, don't you think, so perhaps that's why these guys play so well together.
@Ptarmi
Well observed, sir or madam as the case may be.

Guitar is good. He doesn't play it like a percussion instrument like some people do. And the standard tuning I think is better. You can play full chords like
nice plain
No craic in that pub!
If you'd an Irish bone in your body let alone your limp mickey youd know that this is the craic. Cus at least your mini dick championship in the corner with Maura and Mick would stop in appreciation of Gerry O Connor bating out better wrist work youd ever achieve
The Simple Fenian not a fan of Steve then?
Haha that old guy at the bar is so bored. Amazing, with this music.
+Rien Dekker He looks disappointed to find his local pub had been turned into a recording studio when all he wanted to do was get drunk and talk to his mates
+anonymous2513456 Probably the second or third take....there's always great craic (fun) at an Irish Music Session...Also they've been told to "shut up" and not make noise...
clarebannerman good craic if you knew it was on that night...
+Rien Dekker
Could be that 12th Jamesons, too.
Fab. x
He probably knew Robin Turner who plays and looks just like him...
Many tremolo-style triplets
