  • Hey guys, I was asked on my Discord server to turn a model into a fully connected SubD model, so that's what I did in this video !
    I hope you'll like it !

    Nice video Thomas, to speed up this process at min 1:30 you can Ctrl+Alt+LeftClick on any of the vertical edges and it'll select all of them around the entire circle, with all of them selected go to "Select-> Checker Deselect" and then "Select Loops -> Edgeloops" so in 3 clicks you basically select all the loops around the circle while leaving 1 unselected in the midle everytime.
    The quick manual way to do same is selecting just 1 vertical edge, then the next one you want to select and then Ctrl+Shift+ "+ Numpad" i think it was, and it'll repeat your selection as many times as you press the "+" key, aroudn any mesh

    At 3:30 when you make the diamonds, it redirects the faces coming from the side to go up, make a U turn than go back down and go to the other side of the mesh. Plus the edge inside the area of the U turn right next to one of the turning edges crosses the turning edge. It works fine in this case, but it doesnt neceserally work in other cases no? Like if you wanted to apply the subD and detail it further, it would mess up the whole edge flow of the mesh.

    • @ThomasColin3D
      @ThomasColin3D  7 месяцев назад

      It only a good way to reduce the poly count, of course it messes up the edge flow, but in my case I don't need to apply the subd. I only do that when I think the area i'm working on is fine.

    When applying the bevel at 5:45, would it have been a good time also to use a Bevel modifier, since the Bevel usually makes future changes more difficult? (I am at the moment trying to use the Bevel modifier more :))

    • @ThomasColin3D
      @ThomasColin3D  Месяц назад +1

      Manual bevels are non destructive if the shape is set to 1. You can easily remove them if you have to :)

    great video but what’s with the empties to copy location and rotation can’t we just snap the object to world origin?

    • @ThomasColin3D
      @ThomasColin3D  5 месяцев назад

      It was because this piece is from a bigger 3D model, I just wanted to put in at the center of the world to be able to work in symmetry and to orient it correctly to add a mirror modifier. Once the work is done, I remove the constraints and the objects goes back to it's original location and rotation :)

    So the sub D modifier fails and the model ist not water tight.....
    Is the fix also to reduce the mesh count .?
    p.s...thx.
    -diamant topology mesh trick is a nice showcase of topology mesh flow change and is not so often explained on a 3d model
    - the trick with constraints is also nice handling and great trick and ... thx..

    5:17 the diamonds are necessary there to make it look good?

    • @ThomasColin3D
      @ThomasColin3D  Год назад

      Not really, I just made them to reduce the number of edges between the cylinders, to get a "more" even topology. But if I didn't do that, it would still be fine :)

    Great video. For flat surfaces, what's the goal of putting a grid fill instead of having a circle or a merge a center ? thank you

    • @NORDNightingale
      @NORDNightingale Год назад +1

      That creates triangles which don't subdivide properly

    • @Grimstore
