Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin would tell Rolling Stone in 1996 “This is not an easy band to be in,” “It’s like there’s this fine line between healthy creative tension, and total misery and self-destruction. We’ve definitely seen both” he'd say.
Screaming Trees should have been a much bigger band than they were, but bad timing, infighting and drugs cannibalized the band as Singer Mark Lanegan looked back at his complicated relationship with his bandmates telling Loudersound
“We didn’t have a damn thing in common except insanity. So we fought a lot he'd say.” Today, let’s talk about the rise and fall of Screaming Trees.
Growing up in a ranching town named Ellensberg, which is about 100 miles from Seattle, brothers Gary Lee and Van Connor were outcasts in school being painfully shy and getting into trouble with their parents and teachers by boozing. Soon enough, the brothers got drawn into punk music, more specifically the band black flag Also growing up in Ellensberg around this time was future bandmate Mark Lanegan whose towering stature made him the star quarterback in high school. But Lanegan, also had a troubled childhood and by the time he became a legal adult he had already been arrested for a variety of offenses including public drunkenness, shoplifting and - drug possession. Like the Connor brothers Lanegan would find punk rock in his early teens when he saw a picture of a shirtless iggy pop on the front cover of an issue of Creem Magazine at a record store. Lanegan would eventually meet Van Connor in journalism class and the pair bonded over their love of punk rock. Van’s older brother Lee, five years his senior, was writing and recording songs on a four-track recorder. Lee played his material for Lanegan who saw potential in it. Adding drummer Mark Pickerel to round out the lineup, Soon enough Screaming Trees were born. They would take their name from an old effects pedal.
The band would rehearse at the Connor brothers parents video rental store, but even from the start things were difficult for the band. Between the Connor brothers constant bickering and fighting, Ellensberg didn’t offer a lot of places for bands to play. Van Connor would reveal to author Greg Prato in the book Grunge is Dead that the Screaming Trees first gig was at a group home for people who were mentally challenged.
The band would go on to release their 1985 demo titled Other Worlds through local label Velvetone. And while many people think of Mark Lanegan as one of the best singers to come out of Seattle, original drummer Mark Pickerel would reveal in the book Grunge is Dead how the singer was still finding his voice revealing “this was maybe a few months after lanegan started singing with us so he was still figuring out his strengths and weaknesses. I remember that there’s this song Pictures in my mind he was self conscious about his voice, so we ended up speeding up the tape to give his voice a different edge.” The other worlds EP would get the band noticed in seattle especially by the local newspapers like the Rocket who were now writing about the band and soon enough their music was being played on college radio.
It would be the Connor brothers parents who who lent the band money to pay for their debut album 1986’s Clairvoyance which was released on Velvetone as well. For a band that people hadn’t really heard of, it was a surprise to its members when the album sold over 2,500 copies.
Following the band’s debut album Screaming Trees music eventually found it’s way into the hands of Black flag guitarist and SST Records co-founder Gregg Ginn.
Throughout the rest of the 80’s the band would release a string of albums, EP’s and solo records for SST including 1987’s Even If And Especially When, 1988’s Invisible Lantern and 1989’s Buzz Factory, But the band almost came close to calling it quits. Van Connor would tell author Greg Prato that following 1988’s invisible lantern the band almost quit revealing
We all had crap jobs and had no future. You weren’t making any money in a band like that. We were supporting our band habit by having a job. I left before 1989’s buzz factory for a while about half a year when i had my first son. I freaked out i was like i can’t do music anymore. Of course then i realized that life sucked even worse without

And yeah, a dick move for Mark breaking up the band without telling them; like when Black Francis originally broke up Pixies!

When I was 18 my band opened for the Screaming Trees on a Monday night at a club on music row in Nashville, Tn in 1987. I had never heard of them. I hung out with Mark and Van most of the night talking about music we liked. They gave me a ST tshirt and an SST compilation tape. It was one of those times that as a musician you dont forget and cherish.
I play in bands, and back in the 90s had an opportunity to open for a couple national acts. You are so right. I will always remember those times. Although none of the bands I opened for were as cool as Screaming Trees.

Dust is a criminally underrated album. Every song is fantastic.
Of all the great 1990s albums, even though it was critically acclaimed by the underground and by Rolling Stone Magazine and all that, it's too bad that the trendy bendy's following the grunge movement didn't stick along with another great album like they did with maybe Pearl Jam or and Alice In Chains year or two later. Dust is an all-time great '90s CD indeed!
I love Mark Lanegan post Trees. That guy has a distinct voice and he is always doing something interesting musically.

Deff dope as fuck..love his voice and his early days always felt like morrisonish lol..but yes what it developed into over the years is so sick..I like some of the gutter twins stuff it's fun to listen too..and I'm only 30 so I found out about him and the first time I've heard of him..was the mad season performance I saw on youtube he did with layne staley..long gone day..dude it blew me away lol..then to find out who he is i even went and got the book sing backwards and weep..dude is just crazy as shit in the best way possible and someone I'd love just to have a drink with and hear story's from..long live the lanegan

I read Lanegan's 2020 autobiography and it depicts a tortured genius. With a lifestyle like Layne Staley's over 3 decades, I can't understand how he lived as long as he did.

I can personally relate to that part of Mark's life. I was heavily addicted to drugs and alcohol. Lots of my really close friends were overdosing and dying in drunken car accidents while I rarely even overdosed. I'm a really big guy at 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing anywhere from 240 to 317 pounds depending on the year. That certainly helps with not overdosing but definitely doesn't make one invincible. I'm convinced that God chose to spare my life for some reason. What that reason is, I can't say yet.

Mark Lanegan's voice is still one of my favorites ever. I'm in heaven. I don't feel like the Screaming Trees got the commercial success that they deserved, but I'm just glad Mark survived the volatile years of his life. His solo effort Bubblegum is a perfect album in my opinion

shit, i got that one all wrong. The EP i'm thinking of is titled Here Comes That Weird Chill. Methamphetamine Blues is a song off of it. i know that Bubblegum is good, but i need to revisit it; it's been way too long. But i remember thinking it's the record of his that i identified with most musically, as opposed to his older records of stripped down, bare-bones acoustic songs.
It was easy for me to associate Here Comes That Weird Chill with Bubblegum, as the two were released very closely together. Weird Chill was even recorded at the same time as the Bubblegum sessions.

Mark was a difficult personality to deal with even when he wasn't on Smack. He took everything personally.I guess he was dealing with a lot of personal Demons. R.I.P Mark

@@ProudBostonian I toured with the trees as sound tech and help set up equipment. 4 months of on the road with people. Mark would barely acknowledge me if I said Hi. The guitar and bass player (Brothers) were way laid back. Smoked pot almost Daily with those guys.
Did he OD? I haven’t been able to find out what happened. I thought he was sober, seemed he’d whipped it. So sad.

I saw Screaming Trees open for Sonic Youth in Seattle in 1988 and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Also loved their collaboration with Beat Happening. They definitely should have been much bigger. Amazing band with way too many incredible songs to list.
Mark is a fucking poet for our times. His recent solo releases are just, beautiful.
Dust is easily their best album, and one of the most criminally overlooked albums of the 90's.
Dust really was a fantastic album. I was looking forward to having Mark Lanegan talk about that particular one in his book. He never did, other than to say Dust would turn out to be their last album. It's not very often a band's last album is their best. It was this time.

I’m 40, been into the Seattle bands since 1994. Only ever knew ‘i nearly lost you’ and now about to delve deeper into them: all this after I listened to mark lanegans audiobook. Quite simply the best autobiography I’ve ever heard. So good I listened to it twice back to back in case I missed something.

H-Dawg that guy "dared" you to say it to his face...while doing that...can you dare him to either knock a stick off your shoulder or draw a line in the dirt (if you are on pavement or a sidewalk maybe buy some chalk to draw a line) and make him to cross it ?...i mean how dare you share facts and not say it to his face !!!!!!
He has a limited range, but it's his niche style that makes him stand out. His best music was/is Screaming Trees and QTSA. His solo work is a pretty tough pill to swallow. For one brilliant track, you get an album of fluff and filler. If anything, they were different than their contemporaries and his style doesn't always work. As a singer, he's not great, but he does shine given the right material.
Sweet Oblivion has always been one of my favourite albums. Not because of when or where they're from, but simply because it's a great listen.
Uncle Anaesthesia rarely gets a shout out. By far my favourite ST album. It was co produced by Chris Cornell who plays recorder on one of the tracks and provides some backing vocals here and there.

Screaming Trees is one of my favourite bands, and Mark Lanegan is one of the best singers ever, his solo records and other collabs are mind blowing... Also you have to read his book... its so dark and depressing.

I was never a fan of the Trees, BUT I will say Mark Lanegan’s unflinching, down and dirty memoir “Sing Backwards And Weep” is PHENOMENAL, I chose the audible version which he himself narrates!! It’s definitely one you won’t regret picking up!
Seriously though, after listening to him narrate the most painfully raw, ruthlessly honest and downright embarrassing recollection of stories that 99.9% of people wouldn’t even admit were true to themselves, you think, “Well it can’t get worse than this!” And then he begins the next chapter…
Saw these guys in ‘96 at Lollapalooza and liked them immediately. I was always confused why they didn’t become more popular. Great music

I saw a live show of Lanegan at a small club in Washington. Pickerel opened for him. Towards the end of the show, Lanegan brought Pickerel on stage and he said "We are going to play some old Trees songs." Everyone was shouting out song titles, and I shouted 'Barriers!". I was standing in the front of the crowd a few feet away from him. He looked me dead in the eye and said "No. Not that one."
Long alone winter walks in my early 20's i had Sweet Oblivion and Dust playing on my Walkman cassette player. Beautiful it was. Now 50 and still get the right blues from the vinyls whenever i want to go back those olden days. Thanks Screamings !
I live in Ellensburg and am dear friends with Mark Pickrel. I still believe that Screaming Trees are one of the best grunge bands ever.
Mark Is my favorite artist out there. His early solo work is outstanding. Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is one of the most amazingly underrated blues albums ever written.
Sweet oblivion and I nearly lost you are still in rotation on my playlists. They had a groove that was infectious.

i saw screaming trees open for sonic youth back in the mid 90s. barrett martin is by far the hardest hitting yet elegant drummer i have ever seen. As a drummer at 17 witnessing the economics in his moves was a religious experience, they opened the set with shadow of the season and my jaw hit the floor as well as my panties.. I MEAN PANTS..dammit nevermind.. good drummer that man.
You sure that wasn’t 1988. Saw them at Union Station in Seattle.
Lanegan’s work with Soulsavers is top notch as well. Especially the 2009 “Broken”. “Some misunderstanding” off of that is awesome.

Wow what a coincidence that I just started to listen to Screaming Trees again. I haven't listen to them since high school. I love them.
Mark’s first book is an excellent read. Not since the Da Vinci code have I been glued to a book. His brutal and honest storytelling of him navigating the Seattle drug infested music scene brought chills through my body. Mark definitely lived a tortured life and his honest insight of the heroin scene in Seattle is chilling. You feel for those battling the evil world of addiction. Specially heroin.
I have read tons of memoirs and Mark's is second only to Permanent Midnight by Jerry Stahl. Absolutely insane lifestyles and their ability to convey them into words
That's one band that flawlessly made a switch from a solid psychedelic band to a more roots rock band and made it seem natural. No small feat.

It was through SST and Black Flag that I got hooked on to Screaming Trees. LOVE them. That whole pre-91 Seattle so7nd was rad. Green River, ST, Soundgarden. So tight.

I used to live in Yakima in the mid 90s and would often hear of Ellensburg or of friends that knew or used to know Mark Lanegan. I loved the Screaming Trees and their sound, a cool blend of blues, psychedelia with a punk rock aesthetic.
Lanegan's book is one of the best document about the Seattle grunge scene. And it goes beyond Cobain, Layne and cie: Lanegan tells a lot about underground icons like Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Greg Sage. Go check it out, folks!

I was a college student in 90-94 @ UVa in Charlottesville. We used to end our sets with Nearly Lost You. Good times. Thanks for the nostalgia.

They were one of my favorite bands; their song Winter Song still is a favorite to this day.
The Screaming Trees rank in the top one tenth percent of the top number one in my book. While maybe not over the top technically or in production all the time, the music that those guys crafted as a group has a " listenability", depth and something that can't be expressed in words though rather sensed emotionally and physically. It's a major part of the soundtrack of many of our lives and takes one back to where you were back then.

Not only is Mark Lanagan am astonishing solo artist and the Trees one of the great bands of all time, Marks vocals on Songs for the Deaf are what makes that record for me.
Just listened to Uncle Anesthesia on Vinyl this weekend. They made some great music back in the day.
An absolutely outstanding and timeless band that I keep coming back to decades later. They just released the Live at Egg Studio album in 2023 and it is fucking amazing. Lanegan's solo work is phenomenal too - definitely one of the most beautiful and unique voices of his generation. So glad I made sure to attend one of his final concerts.
Screaming Trees were and still are one of my top 5 favorite bands. Shame to hear about Mark's recent passing.

Sweet Oblivion is one of my favorite all time albums.
The trees were beyond any doubt my favorite band from the northwest scene in the early nineties. Mark really had a great voice but definitely had some demons he seemed to always be at battle with. So sad that now, with his passing, a reunion will never be possible. I'll just listen to the old stuff and look forward to anything new from Valis.
I was meant to see them at Reading 96 in the U.K as they where billed to play, I was so excited. Unfortunately, they pulled out due to a band fight. Screaming trees where such a great band. RIP Mark Lanegan

They did one of the greatest live shows I've ever seen, in Cleveland in about 1994-95. I laugh when you say "they should've been bigger", bc they were the physically largest band I'd ever seen. The Conners were 280-300+ lbs.(in 1995, that was huge) and Lanegan and Martin went 6'4 or 5", and looked like 9'5". They played like giants, too.

I remember seeing a Screaming Trees show at the Cat's Cradle in the early 90s. It was awesome!
The grunge era of music with the Seattle sound was great for me, I finally fit in, it only lasted a few years and it was over.
Screaming Trees was a minor but important part of that music for me, I still have a few of their songs on my phone that get listened to regularly.
A about 10 years ago I was in a used record/CD store and found a "best of" CD.....it was actually really good
The Trees were truly a solid band.
Saw them twice, and both times they were as shockingly amateurish in their overall delivery as they were brilliant when they were actually playing.
The last time I saw them there was a lengthy delay die to a broken bass string. 3 opening acts and not a spare bass to be found while their roadie fount and installed ONE STRING. That show ended with Van coming on stage alone,looking offstage and asking "guys, are we gonna do one more?" multiple times before walking off.
The first time they only played half a set, because that's how late they were.
It's also worth noting that Ellensburg is a college town (Central Washington U) as well as a ranching town.
Saw them do Lollapalooza and they were the worst band on the main stage. I still love their albums though. A lot of bands are like that, but it was disappointing, nonetheless.

@@brazenlilhussy5975 they had been touring for at least five years at that point, and I assume they had moved from E-burg to Seattle by then (especially since I ran into Van checking out guitars at American Music a couple of weeks later).
I was very shocked when I heard the news about Mark. It's so very sad he had a tough road in life. I'm glad him and his wife were able to spend their time together. It's a very sad day for everyone he was a beautiful soul 😭❤️🙏2/22/22

How dare you sir, the acting in that movie was great. I really believed that the actors who played Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Xavier McDaniel were those people.

If there's a "Must Have" Screaming Trees album it's that compilation "The SST years". I've owned like 3 copies of it over the years. It's so good. FWIW.
Agreed! Bought the vinyl on a whim about 10+ years ago. Having not been familiar with anything pre sweet oblivion, I was pleasantly surprised. Way better imo than any of their later material that I've heard

I absolutely loved these guys I look back on it now and realize their was so much good music coming out at that time it was easy just to forget about a band unless they wore in your face So sad to think about them today they were so Good. Saw the Trees a couple of times, once at Lollapalooza in San Jose and the other time in San Francisco, both supporting Dust. The second time, they came on and played about 5 songs, they were great but then Lanegan just walked off and the rest of the band continued, but kinda sucked after that and we just left. Loved Uncle Anastasia, Sweet Oblivion, and Dust though....
Some of the earlier stuff too. SST greatest hits is Good!

I think he thought he WAS Jim Morrison. There's a song on Clairvoyance where he seems to be trying to channel the Lizard King with a long semi-spoken section a la "The End"; I forget the particular track.
