Mad Season with their lone record Above. And like a lot of bands to come out of Seattle drugs played an important role in the history of the band not just in its formation but in stopping the band in it's tracks. The formation of Mad Season really began with Pearl jam's third record Vitalogy. During the making of the album Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready was struggling with alcohol and substance abuse and would head to Minnesota to go to rehab. it was there he would meet Walkabouts bassist and fellow seattle resident John Baker Saunders. Following their treatment, the pair agreed to start a band together to help them both remain sober. They would seek out Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin to start writing material and all the band needed now was a singer so McCready would reach out to Alice in Chains front man Layne Staley who was deep in the throws of heroin addiction. Now McCready was hoping that the trio would have a positive influence on Staley and help him get clean and 1994 had been a disastrous year for Alice in Chains as the band had started off the year releasing their hugely successful EP Jar of Flies and the band was supposed to tour that summer with metallica but addiction and infighting forced the band to split up for about 6 months. With lots of time on his hands, Staley agreed to front Mad Season and at that point in his life Staley was living with a roomate named Johnny and the members of Mad Season would drop by Layne's place to discuss the band nad have him listen to instrumental tracks the trio had come up with and Layne's roomate would recall in the book The Untold Story of Alice in Chains how Layne and John Baker Saunders didn't exactly get off to a good start as Saunders use to come over to Layne's place and fall asleep on his couch. Layne would take guitarist Mike McCready aside and tell him that Saunders couldn't keep coming over and falling asleep at his place because then Layne would have to tip toe around his apartment and that one little misstep aside the band would get together several times to jam and based on the great chemistry the group had booked their first gig. Now the band would play their first show at the Crocodile Cafe in october of 1994 and most of the songs played at the first gig would end up on Mad Season's Above album, but they also threw in a cover of Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child. And since the band didn't have a name yet and by the time their first gig rolled around they called them selfs the Gacy Bunch named after the serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Now it would be guitarist Mike McCready who would suggest that the band record a demo, but it would be Layne Staley who would raise the stakes suggesting the group record an album instead. Now the group knew they had to come up with a legitimiate name though. McCready would look back at Pearl Jam's first albumTen, which was mixed in Surrey, England. The name of Mad Season originated and i won't go too deep in to it. When we were mixing the first record, the Pearl Jam record in Surrey, England, the people who worked at the studio said oh it must be the mad season and that's the season when all the hallucinogenic mushrooms come out over in Surrey, England and I thought ah I'll keep that title for something, someday. Now the band would head to Bad Animals studio to record with producer Sam Hofstedt and Hofstedt would remember the recording of the album saying Layne was still working on his lyrics and vocal parts when it came to actually recording the album. He would go into the studio by himself and have no one else around him and he could operate the tape machine himself and do a little bit of experimentation without feeling like anyone was listening to him or watching him. So Brett Ellason who worked with Pearl Jam also worked with Mad season in the studio and also recalled Layne's drug use at the time saying Layne was not healthy. Heavy heavy drug use. Such a sweet guy and such an amazing talent we were in cahoots with his roomate who would get layne off the couch and point him in our direction and Layne would show up and he would go back to the studio

I really like Jerry Cantrell's honesty and self awareness regarding his jealousy over Layne Staley recording with Mad Season. There's a man who has identified his faults and knows how to deal with them.
It's kind of a healthy jealousy for artistic creativity. It probably get Jerry pumped up to write the self titled album.

Mad Season was the opposite of a tragic band. Wow. Everyone got sober and had an incredible experience in that band growing as artists and experiencing great success. The drummer and mark Lanegan earned the kind of money they didn’t earn in their other bands.

The fact that Layne didn't want the guy coming over and falling asleep because he'd have to "tip toe around his apartment" is so sweet! The fact that he would actually just stay quiet in his own home when this guy was asleep on HIS couch says a lot about what type of person Layne really was.❤

Above helps me get through life, especially on the days that I find it really hard to stay clean. I’ve been in recovery from opiates, speed and benzos for a little over a year. Layne Staley’s vocals in general get me through a lot, but especially this album in particular. RIP Layne Staley, RIP John Baker Saunders.

@@meilnartin9109 my worst days clean and sober are far better than my best days were in active addiction. I’m still doing good, one day at a time. I successfully got off all those pills like I said, now almost 2 years ago, and I’ve been on methadone treatment and I smoke weed. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and my girlfriend always worrying about me because I’d only be awake for 2 hours of the whole day. I’m just so grateful to have such an amazing support system and to have another day clean from hard drugs. I know I’m still on maintenance medication and I smoke bud, but it doesn’t effect my life negatively, I don’t smoke a lot. Mostly for my stomach issues and to be able to sleep. I hope you’re doing good as well, and as you said, If not, keep trying. The most important thing with recovery is you have to want it more than anything else, and you have to want it for yourself. And you have to change people places and things, any triggers. One thing I’ve learned you cannot manipulate, or tough out because you think you’re different.

no shit! 30 years AIC been in my life and Afukinlot of shit tve been through. this music has touched me from my fiancee overdosing in 02, to my to lifelong drug addiction, after loosig my love i started shooting again, morphine. so im 44 now and sober for 6 fukin years. im still that fukin X Generation grunge, alternative girl, so this transition i have done its something unfamiliar. i mean damn, i cant wrap myself around living life not popping pills, shooting up, self medicating. ive done good.

@@64TMS I don't doubt it; that must've been a poignant perfornance. She also started some sort of benefit program for people struggling with addiction and whatnot. Layne Staley Foundation, I think. She sounds like a sweet person.

No human being can be as flawless of a singer like Layne without some vices his happened to be drugs. The amount of pressure he must of endured to nail it perfectly every time, pressure from his label to tour in withdrawal must have been overwhelming. The burden he must of carried publicly, the constant badgering from everyone who didn't understand his pain, to see himself beautiful and amazing whither away into a secluded oblivion must have been horrible,frightening, and embarrassing is there anything left to feel every single day that wouldn't destroy a person? I get it Layne thank you for your gift.

Above is a great album. My mom died at 55 from addiction to opioid addiction, alcohol and anorexia. She was abusive and fat shamed me sending me into I also learned about cutting. Then the booze came. Then in my 20’s I found my lover which is adderall aka legal meth. It made my workouts better which is why I think it’s banned in some sports. I was more productive but eventually angry and just didn’t work. So I quit. I’m clean almost 5 years. I wanted to sleep for a month. I still have body issues but hopefully that will eventually go away.

Mad Season was a great band. I bought Above when it first came out, and I was blown away when I dropped the needle (yes, I got it on vinyl)! I just wish they did a follow up, but I'm glad we got one album out of them. May Layne and John rest in power.
The meaning of Mad Season: River of Deceit as sung by Layne Staley.
Start off by saying this is about Layne’s drug habits particularly with Heroin! Think about it: The river(blood flow in your veins) takes down the Deceit (Heroin). If you read the lyrics now with this in mind and counter the fact this eventually led to Layne’s death is poetic. He KNEW he had a problem and was conveying that to the listener. My pain is self chosen. Pull off my skin and swim to shore…Heroin addicts pick at their skin. Shore represents being off the drug…now I can grow a beautiful shell (New Skin) for ALL TO SEE. Listen again with this in mind.

It's tragic how drugs have brought us so much great music and yet have also prematurely ended so many of the great musicians that made that very music.
I love these little rockumentary documentary videos it just gives you a little more insight into everything that was going on at the time for the "real people" behind the band ,and the love that I feel for people like Layne Staley is so deep it hurts eternally that he is gone. And I honestly I had no idea what Mad Season meant until just now! That's a funny but cool lil factoid lmao anyway, thank you for a great story and video, I could listen to these.all the time!

I remember blaring Wake Up at a red light one night in my factory speakers in a 96 Cherokee. The bass sounded incredible. Even had the guys next to me turn their rap music off and ask who in the heck it was making that sound.
Layne was such a talent. When listening to this album, I like to spliff up and then zone out to "Long Gone Day" and then air drum the shit out of "November Hotel".

I was "Blessed" to be in High School when Grunge broke out.. Music will never be like that again. 1991-1997 especially was loaded with wonderful bands and albums. The Mad Season record is a Masterpiece in itself... How I wish for a time machine....

I've said for a long while now that the Grunge/Alternative rock Era - which I consider to be 1989-97 - is second to none in the history of rock music. So many all-time great bands and albums during that era. Cool that you were in high school when Grunge broke. I was 24 (same age as Cobain and within a year either way of so many musicians of that scene) and hugely into music at that point. It felt like the perfect age for me to fully appreciate it.

It’s scary/sad be side anyone that has done dope can not only empathize with Layne but understand just giving up and falling headfirst into addiction. Everyone who does dope is just one bender, or one tragedy away from giving up.

It wasnt all tragic, Layne was a beautiful person who sang beautiful songs that help me in everyday life. Irritates me to see everythings about Layne on youtube saying 'the tragic life of Layne". i know ur trying to get ur views brother but we have to remember Laynes Legacy also.
Unfortunately it was a tragic life. I grew up in Seattle and saw many of these bands/artists live in the club scene. Sooooo many of these bands/artists have tragic stories.
Dude, the last 6 years of Laynes life are literally as Tragic as Tragic gets.
Sure he didn’t wanna stop, but I’d say by the year 2000, the spot he has put himself in he was far past the point of no return. How in the hell he lived until 2002 blows my mind. I mean he had already blown every vein in his arm out by 1992.
It really shows you how tough and stubborn his body was, I mean he lived for years at literally a hundred pound or so. And would IV H and Coke, while smoking rocked crack, followed by inhaling. Every damn day, just to get by.
I agree 100% he's helped and saved so many people going through addiction and hard times glad u see something positive In this because I dot too....
Layne couldn’t help heal himself, but he helped heal thousand of addicts in the process. Those lyrics that helped those people could only come from someone in Layne’s position. From what I know of the guy I think he would say that’s worth it. Nothing tragic about that. It’s heroic.
I love Mad Season..that album will always be a classic. Layne was one of the most iconic artist of the 90s. His voice was just amazing and haunting.. I wish he was able to fight his drug addiction..
Heroin has claimed so many wonderful and talented people. As a person in recovery, the struggle is real and addiction is a powerful burden to carry. RIP guys!

Mad Season is woefully underrated. It is tragic to think of what they could have accomplished. I hear their influence in groups like Cigarettes After Sex and the XX. They were way ahead of their time.

I really believe Mike McCready is such an underrated guitarist. It’s crazy to think he worked with Vedder, Cornell and Staley. Would love to hear him working with Lanegan.
Lanegan is on a few of the Mad Season tracks, “long gone day”, “I’m above”, “locomotive”, “black book of fear”, “slip away.” I think the last 3 were only on the delux release. Apparently they tried to get Lanegan to do a second release but couldn’t get him to come to the studio to record.

Fantastic story, me and my buddy Kurt are part of history, on my birthday which was April 29, 1995 we were able to score 2 tickets to that show by winning a lottery weeks before in Seattle. It’s also known that I’ve taken this album back to my original hometown of Springfield Ohio and passed to family and friends who still listen to that album to this day. What’s also interesting was I knew this would be A masterpiece, and I have Botton the album on LP and have never opened it! Lastly for that get together that they had just a few years ago he had not mentioned Jefferson “Junior“ angel, what is a prolific and well-known vocalist and guitar player in the area who sang in Lane Staley‘s absence. Duff is also a Seattle native, born and raised. So he knows everyone in that area. But yeah he comes off as a super cool guy.
What he did for Mark Lanegan when Mark was just out of rehab was "sweet" ! Said, "oh by the way Mark, I want you to come and live in my house while I'm gone, or here". That's not an exact quote, but that's what he did for Mark. Look at Mark now. Wow ! What a genuine friend ❤

They were all good friends. All of Metallica is sitting front row for the Unplugged album. Jerry Cantrell's guitar says "Friends don't let friends cut their hair" as most of Metallica had cut their hair off previous to that show.

Please do a show on The Tea Party from Canada. The almost broke in the States and sold a lot of albums. Same time as the Grunge era. Similar style music. Fantastic band
They were more post-grunge. Their sound is more in line with bands like Creed and Days of the New. Regardless, they were garbage.
tea party is always going to be in my list of music i love timeless masterpieces created by them !

If your going to judge a band, make sure you actually know anything about them. Been a fan since 1992. I understand, by the way, grunge started in 1989. I know this before you try and dazzle me with when things started.

That doesn’t change the fact that they sounded nothing like any of the bands from Seattle, regardless of when their first album was released. I mean, Gish was released in 1991 so I guess The Smashing Pumpkins is grunge, too, right? I never knew that dates and genres of music go hand-in-hand. Thanks for teaching me something :)

Jerry Cantrell loved Layne so very much. You can tell in every interview he’s ever spoken his name. He speaks so highly of him. I absolutely loved Laynes voice. I still listen to mostly my 90s music at all times. AIC and Mad Season are both in my collection. There’s no other human that sounds like Layne. Such a beautiful, troubled soul.
