I put my embroidery away when I went to graduate school. That was 35 years ago. I’m just now picking it back up again. What I’ve noticed is how much I missed in the way of how much has changed, what is available now that wasn’t then, and how much more creative it is than it used to be. When I went to graduate school there wasn’t any internet to speak of. Now there’s YOU. What a gift!
Looool, the first ones are kind of rubbishy she says ….. continues to show us a wonderful drawing of a face … a drawing I can only dream of ever being able to draw ✍️ . Thank you for your tips and encouraging us to have a try for it 🌀
Hi Sarah, thank you for these chatty videos. the copyright thing regarding patterns is a nightmare, I make quilts and its very difficult to work out if the pattern is a slight variation or inspired by something else. There's a limit to what you can do with squares and triangles.
I am a member of your channel through Patreon. I was going through looking for slow stitch videos & found these chit chat videos, which I have enjoyed. Even though Ive been doing embroidery for many years, its only been recently that Ive started to make my own designs. I was learning dot mandala techniques & was working with the stencils used to make the designs. I was looking at one & started thinking about stitching the mandala instead of using dots. Once on that idea, it opened up a whole new direction, I enjoyed looking at the stencils & deciding technique, color, what overall look I wanted, & trying to achive that. Stencils have become the starting point, & I have a whole drawer full of them, although Im not sure of the copy rights to the designs. I will use the stencil design as a starting point, with my intention being to achive a certain style, or look, then start adding other fabric, lace, buttons, beads, to that, to create a block or wall hanging that is mine. Im inspired by the work of Christen Brown & Hazel Blomkamp, for a few years now Id look at the pictures in their books wishing I could do something like what they were doing, but never had a clue where to begin. I would always end up staring at a pile of fabric, lace, buttons ect. & feel frustrated. It wasnt until by accident I stumbled on stencils, that everything started falling into place. Embroidery has become exciting again, & much more satisfying. I havent bought a pattern book, or kit in a few years. Im glad your encouraging people to at least try to design something. For many years I was happy copying a picture, making a kit, & convincing myself I couldnt do anything original, content to do other peoples designs. Stepping away from embroidery as a hobby, or past time & going towards embroidery as a means of self expression has been something I couldnt have imagined but so glad I have experienced, just on a personal level, Im still no Hazel Blomkamp, I just have a plastic box with pieces of me inside. It makes me feel a little bit better about myself, & more confident about what I can accomplish.
My stitching life changed when I took a sampler needlepoint class from Sarah and she told the class that we had to create our own design. Seriously?? It's turned out to be my favorite piece of stitching--because I used colors that I really liked and also learned a lot of new stitches. It took me a long time to finish, but it was very satisfying to make my own design. I would like more on composition also. I've read some on composition but find it difficult to actually apply it or see it applied well in other people's work.
I remember the horror on everyone's faces when they saw their blank canvas Lois! It was normal to me!! :D I have never forgotten the lovely little origami birds you stitched on...x
I love designing my own patterns! But I also value kits when learning new skills. My very first embroidery was a kit and made me fall in love with it and I have kits to help me learn stump work.
Thank you for talking how the Pandemic affected your creative spirit. I worked from home, so I had that. But I also paint...and have not felt that urge for a long while. And then I discovered you & others. I love your videos! Like having tea with you while chatting embroidery. So I have been teaching myself embroidery, thanks to you. Thank you!!!💖
Sarah, I love how you support us and encourage our frame of mind for creativity. I never feel rushed and love the samplers included in your free stuff. I’ve been an artist since childhood and I have delved into many forms over the years but then I had a block for several years. So you’re right about the pandemic…my creativity came out again, thanks to you and other artists on RUclips! I thank you for that❣️Love this chat… I’m waiting for a shipments from you currently and I am so excited to get them. 🙏🏽🙋🏻♀️👍🏽Mia
I agree, I think this is why so many of us heading for Sarah, there is no pressure and quietly spoken Sarah doesnt overpower the job at hand, not demanding or rushed. Many youtubers are in such a rush and loud, or don't actually slow down (by talking or showing the technique) enough for anyone to see what they are doing.
Sarah, I totally agree with you about the journey to drawing, not saying I cannot draw but I actually made myself learn to draw quilting designs, and are quite sure that if I applied myself I could draw a lot more. I also agree with you simple is the best way to start, no pressure, and no high expectations either. Although having said that many of us are our own worst critic, but I try and that is what counts, and I have a new saying if something isnt quite right "well, it was blowing that day I drew or sewed that" sometimes we have to change our thinking and nothing is perfect, nothing.
I've been saving pictures of fabrics I find beautiful. I hope to try to use portions of those designs as inspiration for my own designs, whether it's the colors or other elements, like how they stylized a flower or something like that.
Thank you! I just ordered one of those drawingbooks on Amazon, for I want to learn how to embroid the dresses I make. (Viking and other ancient clothing style). I have no idea how to do that yet, but you give great tips, and teach me a lot. I am yet to get the thread and needles to start, lol, but learning how to make a design on a dress may be a good start.. Really, thank you a lot!
Thank you very much for discussing intellectual property. Artists deserve to be recognized for their own creations and be able to earn an income from their labor. People also need to understand that the copyright laws vary widely from country to country. In the US and UK the general law is that the copyright is valid for 70 years after the creator dies. In Canada it is 50 years. There are various technicalities in these laws as well, such as fair use doctrine. I don't want to unnecessarily scare anyone, but it's important to consider these issues. (Yes, I have been through permissions nightmares. 😂)
Another great video full of top tips & useful info. I have been drawing my own patterns since I took up embroidery last year. When I had a hand knitting business I did this to avoid copyright issues when selling. I am also an advocate of putting more on it to avoid dusting! Many thanks Sarah for sharing your knowledge.
I definitely want to design my own patterns with embroidery as got a sketch back ready so will do check out your other channel. I'm a very creative person so ideal for me 😁 I will always enjoy your videos are fab.
Right then, the sketchbook is ordered, it arrives tomorrow I think you are right, I did a lovely sampler with loads of blackwork and pulled threads and I really learnt and improved a lot. The same will apply for drawing, I am sure.
I like 'drawing' with needle and coloured threads, usually in an abstract way. If I wanted to do something figurative, like a bottle containing grasses, I would do a bit of scaffolding or backbone drawing on the material. Then let the stitches and colours suggest themselves as I go along.
First, yes please on the composition video. Second, thank you for all of the great content. Third, you've inspired me to give designing my own project a go..."shells at the waters edge." I have a gorgeous desifn in my head, let's see how it goes on the fabric!
Well Sarah, you have now inspired me to attempt some drawing. I have always said I cannot but after listening to you, well it seems the sky's the limit. Thank you very much and I would love some more videos along the same lines. Thank you and Jonathon for all your hard work.
Thank you for such good advice I will certainly practice my drawing , I came to embroidery late in life something I thought I would never be able to do either but thanks to your and others lovely videos I am learning and really enjoying it.
Hi Sarah, I’m in the process of designing my first embroidery, which is a stump-work of a camellia flower (which has just a single row of petals) and leaves (keeping it fairly simple 😊). I had actually done what you have suggested and picked one from my garden and pulled it apart so I could trace the petals, took lots of pictures and then pressed the petals. Now I’m trying to stitch the petals and deciding on colours, which is harder than I thought it would be. I really enjoy your videos as they are are very informative, so more the better, in my opinion. One thing I would request is for you do do more complex instructions/designs for people who are not beginners but would enjoy building on the basics. Thank you.
I also like to use books from the Antique Pattern Library for inspiration and patterns. All of the books there are past copyright so there’s no issue there. Plus I like Art Nouveau-influenced designs and there’s lots of that there!
Watching your videos has definitely helped me get back into a hobby that I absolutely love & had pushed it aside because of the rush of my day. You're so inspiring & your voice is so soothing. Watching from sunny 🌞California. USA
Hello Sarah! Thanks for another great video. You always seem to know just what to say. I've been in a bit of a creative slump, and I've been beating myself up for not embroidering anything in a while. I know that it's okay to feel this way, but it always helps to hear it from someone else. So thank you! Also, the whole copyright bit was very informative! I'm always seeing people selling things (characters mostly) that are not theirs, but they say it's okay because they stitched it or drew it or whatever. I knew that they couldn't use the characters but was starting to second guess myself because of the work they put in to make it, basically saying they were selling their effort/skills. So thank you for clarifying that!
Working on some cross stitch as I’m listening to this video! Love your advice and all your videos. You are incredibly talented and I’ve stitched a few of your designs (for personal use) to get some practice and to have some pretty pieces around my house. You are very informative. Your videos are my favorite! Have a great week!
Yes please a video on composition! And choosing technique. I want to do a particular design called Tlingit Lovebirds. Am suffering over whether to do it in whitework or goldwork.
Great video with lots of advice. I am definitely interested more in patterns than things and I always used to design my own crochet work rather than follow a pattern. The 365 sketchbook is a brilliant idea. I have an ideas book that I fill in daily with all sorts of stuff from drawings to notes, to pressed leaves and flowers or thread colours to remember.
Love this video - thank you very much. I would like to say "Yes" to a future video on compostion, balance, use of negative space, etc. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to the video on color and to getting back into the habit of drawing on a more regular basis. Grazie!
A very inspirational video! Yes, I would be interested in a composition video. Very interested in designing my own designs. Appreciate the advice on drawing. Thanks so much! 😃
Hi Sarah and welcome home. I just love this chat you just had with us. I didn’t think I’d ever have use for copyright, but as I’m about to enter an original piece in a competition that our EGA chapter is participating in, you’ve given me something to think about ( especially the part about attendees taking photos and possibly going viral) most of my pieces are my own. Even if I start with a pattern, Ive noticed I quickly move into an organic process of creating.
People are often allowed to take photos in exhibitions and at shows etc so it is very hard to control Karen. It depends how you want to look at it really; you can fight it all the way to stop people taking images of your designs or do what you can reasonably do to protect it and be flattered if it appears on social media (if you see it on someones page, check what they are doing with it and write a comment to say 'Glad you like my design' for example.) If someone is making money from it though that is the point I would step in and say it's not okay (obviously you have to find out they are doing this but what's goes around usually comes back around!)
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thank you very much Sarah! I would be delighted that people are (hopefully) being inspired by my work and enjoying it. BTW, I just recently watched a “meditation in silk and gold:” unpacking the Litany of Loreto embroideries" sponsored by The Marion Library of Dayton University. It was given by the CEO of the RSN, Dr. Susan Kay-Williams. I wanted to post the link on our community so others could register but didn’t know your protocol. For future situations, what can I do?

Thank you Sarah for another great video and for your inspiring talk about learning to draw. I always wanted to but have always been scared that my art would look really bad. You make it sound really easy.
Thank you! I have just begun to try designing my own embroidery, so this video was really encouraging. I will try the "draw something every day" idea... though your "rubbish" beginnings are at a level I can only aspire to! I would love a video on composition!
Drawing adding to my list for when I retire, which I used to like doing when I was younger, feeling inspired by your video, but just no time at tge moment.
Loved this video so much! Thanks for sharing your story. Was wondering if you’ve thought about a video showing the variety of textiles you brought back from your trip around the world? I’m sure you have such a vast variety many of us have never seen.
We have two videos on that subject, check out the free one on textiles from India with Gautam and the other one is on my Channel Member and Patreon pages!
"The more stuff you put on a shelf, the less you have to dust it" made me laugh. It's true though. My artwork consists of the kindergarten sun, tulip, and stick people, but good point about the practicing and learning. I guess the key point is that I don't really want to draw because it's not where my interest lies. I always buy the kits and patterns.
can anyone help. i bought some washable pens thinking it would make stitching a bit more easy when i come to wash it out it has left horrible brown marks where the ink was .i dont know how to get these marks out .can anyone please help
Thank you for making this and sharing! On the subject of copyright...If someone likes say one part of one of your designs and another of someone else's and puts the two together, is that still considered copyright infringement? or theft? I would not do something like that without asking first, I am just wondering.
Sarah I am a patron from Texas but I can’t I see how to get to special member page. I can’t find a logical way to enjoying my embroidery. Any toon the supplies suggestions? This is 9-3-23- nothingseems orderly for me. Please mention when you are filming. Shirley Cawyer from Texas
Hello Sarah! It seems I am having trouble sending you and email on your site. I wanted to know when the wood clamp tightener a are coming back in stock. I wanted to put in an order but I wanted everything in one order.
Mostly Sheryl, there are a few more features on Patreon like direct messaging and easier downloads and I know some Apple users struggle with seeing the RUclips Channel Members posts
Is that button not clickable Sheryl? If it won't let you physically move onto the next step I think something in the current step isn't completed so just go over it again and make sure you have filled everything in x
Yes big red button "submit" Perhaps its because it on my mobile. I will try a computer then. I so appreciate you're awesome videos and instruction drop
“The more you put on it, the less you have to dust.” 😂🤣. I’m going to adopt that philosophy! Less dusting = more stitching time!
I follow the Quentin Crisp philosophy - after 2 years the dust doesn’t get any deeper.

I think your drawings are lovely well done 👏
You are so talented!❤
"The more stuff you put on a shelf, the less you have to dust it" made me laugh. It's true though. My artwork consists of the kindergarten sun, tulip, and stick people, but good point about the practicing and learning. I guess the key point is that I don't really want to draw because it's not where my interest lies. I always buy the kits and patterns.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. You mentioned you paint the pages before you draw. Do you use gesso? 😻😻😻
I used a water colour ground which is a slightly thinner substance than gesso Dana but gesso would work
When pattern books call for you to enlarge patterns how do you do that
Thank you for looking at Patreon. Would love to be part of this community and support your channel.
And yes, more on composition please!
Yes composition please.
can anyone help. i bought some washable pens thinking it would make stitching a bit more easy when i come to wash it out it has left horrible brown marks where the ink was .i dont know how to get these marks out .can anyone please help
Thank you for making this and sharing! On the subject of copyright...If someone likes say one part of one of your designs and another of someone else's and puts the two together, is that still considered copyright infringement? or theft? I would not do something like that without asking first, I am just wondering.
If it's recognisable as obviously from the orginal I would say it's still in breach of copyright Marcia
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thank you, Sarah.

Patron and menber are they the same?
Mostly Sheryl, there are a few more features on Patreon like direct messaging and easier downloads and I know some Apple users struggle with seeing the RUclips Channel Members posts
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery I keep trying to sign up for Patrion it won't let me press the last button called submit
Is that button not clickable Sheryl? If it won't let you physically move onto the next step I think something in the current step isn't completed so just go over it again and make sure you have filled everything in x
