Read & Understand Volvo Diagnostic Codes On 1992-1995 Volvos

  • This video will show you where the diagnostic port is located on pre-1996 Volvos and how to retrieve diagnostic codes on OBD1 Volvos years 1992-1995. Also, this video will show you how to clear the check engine light on OBD1 Volvos years 1992 to 1995. This is also known as reading 'blink codes' on a Volvo.
    Listed below is the information retrievable from different slots; when recording this video, I was in the A2 slot.
    A1 Transmission
    B1 Climate Control
    A2 Fuel System
    B2 Cruise Control

    Diagnostic codes for Volvos 1992-1995
    A1 - Transmission
    111 No faults found
    112 Solenoid S1 short circuit to battery voltage
    113 Transmission control module (TCM) fault
    114 Program selector open circuit or short circuit to supply
    121 Solenoid S1 short circuit to ground or control module fault
    122 Solenoid S1 open circuit
    123 Solenoid STH short circuit to battery voltage
    124 Mode selector faulty or short circuit to ground
    131 Solenoid STH open/short circuit or control module fault
    132 Transmission control module(TCM) fault
    134 Faulty load signal from ignition control module
    141 Oil temperature sensor short circuit to ground
    142 Oil temperature sensor open circuit
    143 Kickdown switch faulty or short to ground
    211 Transmission control module (TCM) fault
    212 S2 solenoid short circuit to battery

    Thanks! I did this yesterday. I had given up any kind of pre-mechanic diagnostic because of the incompatibility with newer scanner devices. I had no idea this was hiding in plain sight, under the hood! :)

    Was there a check engine or service engine warning light to indicate there was an issue needing the code? And did the dash warning light self correct or require more manual inputs?

      @@WheelsTips 93 240 Battery was under sized BCI Group 28 severly under powered, died 50 mile tow "TY AAA!" BTW no more ride along due to COVID 19!!! FYI/CYA!! Swapped battery BCI Grp 48, New Service Engine light indicated, goes out after 5 min warm up. Add insult to injury Sea Foam High Mileage treatment 5.33 oz in tank 5 gls gas, 5.33 oz to valve cover, 5.33 ov in the fuel pressure sensors hose "sipping". White smoke great show, homeless guys was trying to tell to "cut it off man, youre smoking A LOT!" So Service light after dead cell battery, a week later replaced PCV, flame trap, oil return, & hoses, Sea foam treatment, oil change Check engine stays on. Got my list of codes see what we find.       Thanks a lot for the update Rick Peterson, good to know about the AAA situation. I personally used to clear the codes after seafoaming and having the battery die as it could leave you with a lot of incorrect codes. I would clear the codes and see what would come back and use those codes as a basis. I would document the codes before and after and see what comes back.

      @@WheelsTips Disconnected/Reconnected to Battery, Check light gone. Service light remained. Reset Service light by manually pushed (?) "Trip reset" on back of Odometer (front trip reset broken/missing) as advertised on Brickboards. Have pics, Much easier to find after removing knee cushion under steering colum. All lights reset, no codes. Thanks for leading the way, fielding the question, good looking out!!

      The service light can be trick to work with on Volvos, but thanks for the tip. So you just hold the 'trip reset' for 20 seconds? I am guessing with the car off and key in position 1 or 2? Please share, thank you so much.

    do the diagnostic units go bad. I have an engine light problem but all I can get out of the diagnostic unit is repeated 1 1 1 code for cleared system.

      @@WheelsTips so this did give me codes that led to MAF sensor and idle air control valve which I found out were both working fine. The issue was the main fuel pump(external) was going out causing the air/fuel ratio to be thrown off. Once replacing fuel pump car was running great once again

      Hey Scott Ray George in my experience with similar situations I have looked into the crankshaft position sensor. Have you tested the sensor or wiring ?

      The other common areas to test on those cars are, the idle air valve, a vacuum leak and a temp sensor. Given the computer diagnostic is primitive a lot of the test are a bit more complicated. Please share what you have tested.

      Truthfully it seems like you have done a lot. Do you have a repair manual for the car? At this point you may want to look if you can come across some test to check if the ignition module is bad. Please share what you find. Truthfully the ignition module is not that expensive, please remember to share your findings.

    i have a volvo 440 1993, beautiful car ;), but been having some difficulties with the carburetor, and cannot seem to find a diagnostic connector anywhere in europe. is there someone who could help? thank You
