    Okay the Purrely comment actually bugs me and I don't even play the deck
    Semi-limits to Purrely cards matter because it prevents My Friend Purrely from being able to straight-up search Any Purrely Card, being only a 1/3 or 2/3 chance to add if limited/semi-limited, as well as reducing the Xyz monsters' access to multiple of the same effect while under it as material (eg. Duel Links answer and one that is meme'd on all the time: Malo to 1.
    The Intern who was tasked with hitting Elementsaber Invoked forgot to actually READ THE ELEMENTSABER CARDS when they put malo to 1. The logic was that Putting Malo to 1 limited the deck's ability to summon multiple copies of Invoked Purgatrio, the deck's board breaker and game ender.
    However, for those who have never seen an Elementsaber card in their lives: All the Main Deck Elementsaber monsters have a graveyard effect that allows them to change their attribute while in the graveyard for that turn. So even if you put malo to 0 you can still make purgatrio with any Elementsaber name in GY! Brilliant work konami!

    • @stoic_hero_tcg
      @stoic_hero_tcg 6 месяцев назад +5

      I think this has to do more with an "implied once per turn" effect, where players are so use to how Konami shifted in card design that especially those who learned the game or were very active playing it during that time seem to assume the "once per turn" on cards, even if it is not there. A great example of this is when I was playing Harpie physical at a locals and my opponent negated my Elegant Egotist. I then activated a second one right after that chain resolved and he responded in shock, "It is not a once per turn!?" and thought the card was broken because you could active multiples in a turn. 🤣

    I remember when Symbol of Heritage was limited because I realized this card was very functional and kind of broken in Harpies where we could just bounce it with Zephryros the Elite, as a lot of people were slowly realizing around the same time. Before Cyber Dragons were being designed around the same mechanics, Harpies were the only cards where you would have multiple monsters in grave be the same name. It was effectively monster reborn for deck that had terrible recovery...and then they hit it. I hated Konami around that time.
    Also what people need to understand about Yugioh banlists is a lot of it is done just get players to play something else. Shit like Mathmech Circular, the adventure hits in 2022, they are saying please stop playing these cards so we can sell you new ones. They were too good and kept people off of new stuff, so they banned them.

      honestly while konami's sheer indecisiveness with breaker is brow-raising, it's not hard to figure _why_ they felt the need to keep him under lock in the first place. his time on the banlist coincides pretty well with the era of limited mst, where playable generic backrow removal was at a premium to the extent that top decks were maining _dust tornado_ all the way into edison. a normal summon that could either be a 1900 body or an immediate backrow pop is an easy candidate for a hit under that ethos, esp. when it saw _some_ sideboard play in the moments where it was free

    Joseph, my friend, my comrade in arms, Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Spirit was limited until January of 2015 and only came full off in April of 2015. It went from 1 -> 2 on the same banlist that hit Nekroz.
    For those who want context, Spirit was hit on the September 2013 banlist, which was the first banlist since the OCG and TCG had combined banlists that they split again. It notably included a ton of pre-emptive hits to decks like Fire Fist, Mermail, and Dino Rabbit for some reason. The idea one would imagine at the time was that by hitting Dragon Rulers, decks from previous formats would be a lot more dominant, but as any intelligent person could tell you the big dragons are also so incredibly broken on their own (at the time) that it just resulted in them dominating everything.

    • @Lord_Phoenix95
      @Lord_Phoenix95 6 месяцев назад

      In glad they split the lists. The combined lists were terrible. We'd get products 3 to 6 months later and OCG had already hit the decks people were wanting to play. It's not like I went to tourneys but my friends and I would still follow the list even at college.

    • @lamiaprincess6371
      @lamiaprincess6371 6 месяцев назад

      @@Lord_Phoenix95 Yeah with the benefit of hindsight it was obviously a good thing, but definitely at the time it was a really controversial change at least in part because the TCG banlist changes were way harsher than the OCG banlist (the banning of Elemental HERO Stratos comes to mind). Hilariously though, the OCG also hit 3/3.5 Axis Fire Fist, but their hit was a limit to Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Rooster, which at least in my opinion was a significantly less heavy handed hit. Getting your one copy of Rooster off of Horse Prince was always going to be easier than recycling your one copy of Spirit.
      (A significant amount of deckbuilding during that year for me went into finding ways to make Constellar Ptolemy M7 because tbh Lion Emperor kind of sucked ass to make. I think the best engine I could find was Shogi Knight and Shogi Lance, which in the OCG came out early enough to be an option for their PRIO format but for us came out right before Spirit went up on the list).

It won't last outside of a few niches. The way you play just changed too much. You would take some wins if you build for the modern match up but the actual deck variants being run back then might not have done it. Against modern the strongest deck would probably just be stun with some of the more broken cards thrown in.
      Negates just weren't as common back then which is why CED was so scary. Nowadays it would need to go after you baited everything. So throwing dark holes and raigekis first is a must.

    brotherhood of the fire fist spirit got limited because they were still matching the OCG list at this point and we had a 3-axis version of fire fist that relied on this card + rooster which came out in the set after dragon rulers to make synchro plays and was a good deck in the ocg. since it got hit before it got any play in the TCG, the card seems like it would never be good in that deck, there is a clear combo with these cards.
    basically, you use spirit to summon out rooster and rooster says WHEN it is summoned by a fire fist monster, you can add a fire fist monster from your deck to your hand. rooster also let you send a fire formation you have on the field to set another from the deck. spirit is what enabled rooster and as a tuner it also let you make the synchro which on summon brings out a level 3 fire fist from the deck. this hit was substantial because it definitely would’ve been a solid deck possibly during that format but mainly in the following format. it was busted in the OCG, which actually meant something back then as they shared lists.

      There were good reasons for all of those hits. They killed infernoble and tear because they were dumb combo decks that didn't have consistent answers going second outside of shifter, which most decks can't run.
      Rescue ace and unchained were both super flexible decks that often felt like it was on the opponent to play into what you have than for you to beat with better play. Noir is just a very frustrating card for decks to deal with in general, and being able to draw 6 in particularly was kinda dumb. Circular is just a very over tuned card.
      I'm still on rescue ace now and when you go first with the deck you win if you resolve turb lose if you don't. There's also hands where your opponent can't stop turb, because your deck is able to dodge targeted negation with sp and emergency for some reason. It was completely justified to hit lifter on that list and I'm kinda disappointed they didn't hit emergency on the last list as well, because then I'd have an excuse to drop the deck.

    The case to be made for semi-limiting Purrely memories is that My Friend does Bingo Machine Go style searching, so having less than exactly 3 copies makes that far less reliable for searching, and it also greatly lessens the chances of any Purrely main deck flipping a memory up.
    The problem is, because of the above, Purrely is on a razor's edge in relation to the banlist. If anything gets hit, the deck practically dies because of the _huge_ consistency hit that causes.
    I'm super annoyed that they basically killed Purrely, especially because it's honestly not hard to out. They hit Ulti-Cannahawk to 1 for what feels like eons, like 3-4 years after Ritual Beasts were basically unplayable (Forget the good placing in that one regional). Hawk was still at 1 all the way after they made the Link-2 RB which basically made the deck playable again, and the ban only ended up kinda making the combo longer because we had to make sure to recycle the Cannahawk with every use. This hit particularly hurt the deck, because if anything happened to Cannahawk, it was an instant surrender, but also it basically just made Rampengu unable to search half the deck without gimping the deck entirely.
    I think the worst thing about this hit, aside from the length, was the sheer misunderstanding by the community. I've heard multiple yugitubers and commenters say Cannahawk hit was because the combo took too long. No, the combo length stays EXACTLY the same length with 1 Cannahawk to 3. Especially with the Link-2, the combo became shorter, and RBs didn't even have longer combos than the meta deck at the time, fucking Drytrons. The only thing the Cannahawk hit did was basically just nerf Rampengu, one of the better starters in the deck.
    Anyways, it's at 3, and I can use Rampengu again, but they'll strike again when Konami releases the new support that's already like 3-4 months later than around the same time frame Japan got them

      The problem with IRL ygo was that people would bring this deck without getting enough practice and lose track of what they special summoned, doing their combos particularly slowly.
      But objectively, the length of an RB combo is not even that long. When I did it at locals, people around me didn't care cuz they spent longer just looking at their options and thinking, while I had actually practiced the deck and knew the lines.

    Symbol of Heritage was banned because of Dark Strike Fighter and Dewloren, Tiger King FTK. Hard opt wasn't a thing back then. The whole point of summoning Dewloren was to bounce Heritage and sacrifice Dewloren to Fighter.

    Desires make perfect sense. Swordsoul was the best deck in the format, and one of the reasons whyvis that they could play this card without a single issue making them play with one extra card in most games. Bird-up and Tri-Brigade before it were also great in large part thanks to it

    If you ask me out of all of these the healer hit is the weirdest. Hitting sunvine healer did nothing to the combo as there where already alternate combos that some argued where better. I often forget that healer is banned when building because you only need one of anyway. in testing there there are some edge cases in long running duel where you could use a second healer but those are so rare and often you can design around that with thereon cards.
