  • We all make mistakes sometimes. And just because Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is a massive company doesn't mean they don't make mistakes. Today I'll take you through different attractions where Disney could have done... Better.

      Offhand Disneyland I was almost a year old when DCA opened, but my older sister was 11 when it opened and actually went on Super Star Limo. She explained to me how slow and scary the ride was. Just from looking at videos and pictures of the ride I have got to say it seems like a disaster. What was Eisner thinking!!!

    The original idea for Superstar Limo (racing through LA to escape the paparazzi and get to the Chinese Theater) seemed ... not terrible. But it opened in 1997 and when Princess Diana died in a limo crash while escaping paparazzi, they had to change it and just couldn't manage the switch.

    Something you should look into is the "re-skin" process Superstar Limo went through to become Mike and Sully to the Rescue. Basically, they wanted to minimize as much spending on the new ride so they literally kept everything the same, like ride vehicles, background settings, and track layout. The most interesting re-skin that I think you would enjoy is that all the celebrity "wax figure-animatronics" are now CDA agents. Most agents are in stances and positions exactly identical to the celebrity counterparts. It is something worth checking out.

    Superstar Limo had a completely different plot and with different lines. It was originally about you being a star late for their movie premiere and were to going to zoom through Hollywood- seeing stars along the way as you were chased from the paparazzi. They were about to start construction when the death of Princess Diana was announced and they quickly changed the script and speed of the ride as to not make any connections. But I agree- the version they made was shitty

    “Huh. That was weird.”

    I am the wrong person to ask, because I enjoy the truly, unintentionally deranged things Disney does just every now and again (and did even more back when Mike Eisner was in charge of things). I actually liked Superstar Limo for the exact reasons everyone hated it. Creepy nightmariah puppet versions of B-list actors on a dark ride with too much fluorescent paint and no plot?... I'm there.

    • @TikiKrissy
      @TikiKrissy 7 лет назад +24

      Totally agree. My husband and I loved it because it was so awful. The best/worst part was the fact that they took your picture during the ride...and showed it to you on a large monitor. No one ever looked like they were having a good time. My dad has a photo somewhere of him, my mom, my uncle and my brother that he took of the monitor. They just look pissed off. It's so great.
      Also, it's fun that they re-used the same animatronics of the celebrities in the Monsters Inc. ride. You can especially tell with the Drew Carey.

    • @lifeislikeahurricane2160
      @lifeislikeahurricane2160 7 лет назад +8

      The reason there was no plot was because the ride had to be drastically changed and gutted due to similarities between the ride and the recent Princess Diana death via limo after the ride concept had already been completed.
      Also imagineers hated the ride, but Eisner loved it and wanted it to be full of jokes only few would really understand.

    Man, I really wish I were alive when the classic Journey into Imagination was open, it seems so lovable and genuine. As for the current version, it was part of my childhood and I’m still a big fan of Figment to this day. I’d really really hate to see him go...

  • @MrJamacianBob
    @MrJamacianBob 7 лет назад +16

    I think the best solution for the Imagination pavilion is to make the ride a hybrid of Figment and the Dreamfinder and Inside Out. Figment already had a cameo in Inside Out, so I think it would make sense in an era where Bob Iger won't do anything without it being tied to an already successful IP

  • @MamaStylus

    Kitchen Kabaret is like a fever dream and that's why I goddamn love it. One of my favorite things to do is link it to new friends and gauge their terrified reactions. Food Rocks was a pale and extremely cheap replacement that they should have been ashamed of.
    Superstar Limo's sweaty, grease-coated agent puppet is the stuff of nightmares, however I argue the Joan Rivers puppet that was in the queue was slightly worse. Also, the fact that all the celebrity animatronics are still in the ride today, as part of the monster clean up crew, is neat, except for the fact that in the process of reskinning them, they were all FUCKING DECAPITATED. Just remember, under that jumpsuit is the headless robotic corpse of Drew Carey.
    As for the Imagination Pavilion, give the ride back to Dreamfinder and Figment. Let Inside Out have the Magic Eye theater for a new 4D-esque attraction. When's the last time they made of those? Like 2003 or something?? There, everyone is happy.

    • @nxdxgwen1

      @SnaxAttacks - My parent took me to EPCOT Center in the early ‘80s… and to this day, if she’s at our place and I’m fixing dinner, or if we’re at her place fixing food, at some point, as I’m slicing and peeling, she and I will turn to each other and sing “Veggie, fruit-fruit, veggie-veggie, fruit-fruit!” and laugh hysterically… and no one else can understand why.
      So Kitchen Kabaret was awesome, and I will fight anyone on that point.
      Also, Journey into Imagination v.1 was the CENTERPIECE of Walt Disney World - as a jaded tween, too cool for anything, even I couldn’t resist and wound up getting my photo taken, grinning, with Dreamfinder and Figment. Heck, I still have my Figment/EPCOT mug and I drink from it regularly, too! So that’d be another fighting point for me, although I do agree with you that the subsequent revisions look horrible.
      Actually, I’d like to kick the twin asses of Eisner and Iger generally, over what has happened to EPCOT Center since ‘87 or so. Visionless, future-phobic, cookie-cutter CEOs… 😤

    Superstar Limo was awful and as a former Cast Member, embarrassing. It was creepy and came off as cheap... when it was running, anyway. Most of the times I went to DCA, it was 101. Mike and Sully is a much better ride.

    I walked off "Journey into *Your* Imagination"; turned the corner; and walked straight to Guest Services to complain. I was familiar with the original ride and the redo was heartbreaking. I remember going through what looked like a warehouse, and at one point there was regular furniture stuck to the ceiling. Tada... The response from Guest Services was, "I know, right?!". They hated it as much as we did. The fix is good, but still nothing like the original.
    Superstar Limo was just jaw-droppingly bad; though it was pretty reflective of early DCA. I was actually invited to do a focus group on California Adventure very early on, and everyone in that group *hated* the park. Since then the park has been completely done-over. But Superstar Limo was the very, very cringiest of a bad situation. The Mike and Sully ride is cute.

  • @alexpines5123
    @alexpines5123 5 лет назад +2

    I was at California Adventure shortly after it opened back in the day. I loved Superstar Limo because it was an air conditioned right with virtually no wait time. The Monsters Inc ride is a huge improvement and it still serves that same function, so I DEFINITELY don't miss Superstar Limo.

  • @Sophie-lv2vj
    @Sophie-lv2vj 6 лет назад +5

    Someone may have commented this already butttt, the original plan for superstar limo was supposedly that you were a late celebrity and the ride was gonna be a high speed chase type of dark ride. Terribly enough, a few weeks before the attraction was set to open, Princess Diana died in a terrible limo accident. So, they canned the original concept, refurbed the ride and then it became what it was. I think I learned this in a different video but yeah just a neat tidbit.

    Making Journey into Imagination into an Inside Out ride actually sounds like a pretty good idea.
    At this point, it'd be the 4th rename of the same idea so it's not like it'd bring in tons of people as it did.
    May as well make it into something that can garnish interest again.

    Hey, we have a show here at WDW called Stitch's Great Escape and it's not that good. It used to be and alien themed show but changed it to Stitch. The bars on the seat go over your shoulders, like on a rollercoaster, so that you can't get up. It's kind of like the Bugs Life show at Animal Kingdom, but not as good. @theinternethq1910 4 года назад

      What I think would be a great compromise is update the ride with better technology, and give the features in the playground after it a major facelift because there are small level science centers with better technology exhibits. I remember going there about 6 years ago and the motion capture was.. functional, I guess. But slow to respond and very inaccurate. They should make that into inside out because it was more directed towards the kiddos, and I don’t think anyone would have a problem with two franchises in the same building at Disney

    My mom and I like going on all the kiddie rides in Disneyland as a joke, so while waiting for our fastpasses for Guardians we convinced the rest of my family to go on Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters with us and ended up having a great time! We ended up going on it again 2 more times because the line was so short. It's a really cute little attraction, definitely something to check out if you're looking for something to do in between faspasses or showtimes.

    Controversial opinion, but I like Superstar Limo more than the Monsters Inc ride and here's why;
    The Monsters Inc ride is just okay, with the only noteworthy thing being the interactive Roz animatronic at the end. Superstar Limo on the other hand is so god awful that I can't help but keel over in laughter at its ineptness. From the nightmarish agent puppet, to the stupidly over the top narrator, with a whole bunch of washed up c-list celebrities sprinkled in, and bad puns galore. The rider's reactions to it are icing on the cake, especially the on-ride photos with all the confused, angry faces. Superstar Limo, is the Plan 9 of Outer Space of amusement park rides.

    I do agree the Luigi tire ride was extremely hard to maneuver and wasn't fun. The new ride is more enjoyable to watch than actually take part in, because the cars do several different dance numbers, all ending with the big spin at the end. (Not any worse than the teacups, its sort of fun) If you're on the ride you can't see the cute choreographed numbers, given your view is limited. If anything go to the rides exit and watch.

    Luigi’s Rollickin Roadsters is super fun. I feel like there’s not much thrill with it but it’s just such a fun experience. Last time I went on it, the choreo we did involved two cars in the middle doing some sort of tango (in which I happened to be in one of these cars) while all the other cars were circled around the two in the middle and its just a good memory. Definitely worth a ride when in DCA.

    I was 9 when I rode Superstar Limo, and I went on it twice: once during the passholder preview for DCA, and after the park opened. This ride pretty much scared me out of any hope of becoming a movie star.
    The ride clearly wasn't well received, and I'm sure they began making slight changes to it in hopes of improving it. I remember when you enter the tattoo scene, there would be projectors shining straight down on you, making it look as if you had tattoos all over your body.
    Yes, and this ride was designed for families with children.
    The projections can't be seen in any videos, as I'm sure they removed them from the ride from guests' complaints.
    When we exited the ride for the first time, my dad asked, "How'd you enjoy your first ride in a limo?"
    "That was NOT a limo ride." I thought.

    Why is Mission Breakout not on this list? It has all the same failures as Superstar Limo with irreverent humor, it's ugly, it was made cheap, it had self referential/4th wall breaking, and relied on star powering to attract guests. Mission Breakout has all of that and more because it used screens instead of sets and animatronics, replaced Tower of Terror, and was done simply to sell more tickets for GotG2 screenings and toys. Not to mention MB has an average wait time of 45 minutes which was the same as Tower of Terror essentially meaning the change did not bring in new guests to the park. Mission Breakout is easily one of the greatest examples of Disney getting it wrong and it's amazing so many people think it's something special just because it has Baby Groot.

      I actually enjoy the ride more than I did TT, maybe it's because when I rode TT I was a little child who got easily scared, maybe it's because I believe if there's a Haunted Mansion the a Tower of Terror makes no sense, maybe it's because I believe it's fun to have two different experiences in the park (being that in WDW the TT is still there, so you can ride something different in DCA), idk. DCA veteran here, my mom, sister, cousin and I even got to go to one of the park previews before it was fully open to the public Superstar Limo was not a good ride, but it still holds a special place in my heart/memory, because it reminds me of a DCA that felt completely different than it did even a handful of years later and wayyyyy different than it does now. Probably comparable to how people feel about going to Disneyland in the 50’s vs the 80’s, special memories of early attractions come and gone.
    The Monster’s Inc ride is a much, much, MUCH better ride than Superstar Limo, but being one of the few who remembers SL fondly is kind of cool too. My sister and I used to ride it all the time because there was never a line, and it just had this weird feel to it no other rides at Disney had. We’d ride that and watch the Muppets 3D movie back to back as they were right next to eachother. There really wasn’t a whole lot to do in the Hollywood area in the early days, they had the 2 attractions I named, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the animation studios area, and that was pretty much it, and it was always dead. SL was a good ride to take it easy on, to enjoy the silly queue if there ever was a line, to get out of the rain to go on, it was fun in its own way. Maybe being a SoCal local and seeing Hollywood poked fun at that way struck us as more relatable than people coming in looking for a purely Disney experience, who knows. DCA is better now for sure, but I do miss the early days with SL, free tortillas from the Mission factory, and the slow pace of the mostly empty park.

    I've ridden every version of Journey into Imagination. I enjoy the version they have now, because of nostalgia but would LOVE to see the original version come back. That'll never happen because the current ride queue is where half of the old ride was (the part that was a half circle with the Dreamfinder on his ship) and the Dreamfinders ship has been taken apart to be put on display in one of the gift shops in EPCOT.

    I actually give some props to Superstar Limo-- the original story was about being on the run from paparazzi, and such, but during the creation of the ride, Princess Diana died-- when her limo driver was trying to escape paparazzi.
    Disney realized there was no way they could open with that and rehashed it to the ride it became. They made very few references to the paparazzi at all and made the ride go crazy slow so nobody could make any connection. Bad ride? Yes. Bad planning? Not exactly.
