The squeaking noise may not be bottom end, take a look at 21:48. The idler pulley on the serpentine belt is seizing up and you can see it locking up in time with the squeak. Remove the serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away. The knock at the end does sound bottom end though.....
i had a bad idler pulley on mine the thing had a high pitched squeal like a jet before it finally shattered & had to replace it - had thought the valve train went bad on me which left my stomach turning, replaced it and everything was great after that.
It's from Wisconsin, or at least it appears to be.!! That sticker that's on the inside of the door is in the shape of the state of Wisconsin At least.!! Right next to me here in good old Minnesota.!! Another cool video my friend.! 😁😇🙏✌❤🗽💯%
Once again, you never fail to amaze me with how you can get these cars running again. Don't feel too bad about the knocking, it was likely doing that before, it just waits until the motor warms up a bit before it's loud enough to tell exactly what it is.
That for sticker is Wisconsin Update, I agree. It might be worth a polish and bearings. If not, it's a beautiful truck, worth a new engine if nothing else.... Good luck man, keep it up!!
Not these years, but my dad made many of the body, and panel dies to stamp them, through most of the 1980's. My dad, and my grampa both worked for GM for 30+ years each, as tool, and die makers.
I have restored 2 98 tahoes, a 01, and are now working on a 05 tahoe, not that I'm an expert but when I crank them for the first time after sitting for years, I drain the existing oil, refill with fresh oil but only 3 qts, 2 less than needed, and substitute oil for atf fluid. The atf has detergents out the wazoo, it helps clean and brak up all the sludge those engines build, the oil is really thin but you know chevy and their needle oilers. It would appear you are the victim of sludge, hence the... it ran fine for a while with high oil psi, and you gained lifters back after a few secs, oil sludge is every engines worst nightmare. Great job though, running is running, but food for thought next time
That Chevette in the background is shabby chic! Drop a LS crate motor in that one,.... I wouldn't condemn the engine bearings just yet, the noise doesn't typically go away on it's own. Plus your oil pressure would be down if the bearings were spun.
Those engines were notorious for baking the intake gaskets from the EGR dump, causing water to mix with the oil spinning bearings and things. Also the old EGR makes buildup on the poppet injectors. There is a upgrade to MPFI GM made later on to replace them.
Yo Ike. If you are still pulling 50psi in oil pressure at idle with old oil in it, the issue won't be a rod's big end or crank's main bearing, mate. While the first sound was a bit like a main, I reckon that screechy rattle is more reminiscent of one of the belt tensioners on the front of the engine. When the bearings in those things go, they make a heck of a racket and definitely make the engine sound terminal. The last time you fired it in the video, the noise had a repetition a lot like a big end.....but the noise is not low enough in pitch to be a big end...... Before I pulled the engine, I'd take the belt off and check each of the pulleys up front (including water pump, aircon, power steering pump and alternator), but pay close attention to the tensioner or idler pullies as these are the ones that make real bad noises when they go. Any sign of movement or rumblyness and they are shot. The belt also deviated on the top belt tensioner when the noise changed when you revved it, so I'd check that one first. When you went around the back of the vehicle, it still sounded like she was a lung down. A badly seated lifter (one with a lot of play) can also sound similar to a big end because of the repetitive 'donk' when it hits the rocker (but the sound will be higher in pitch than the deep 'donk' of a big end), so if the noise persists after replacing any worn tensioners or pulleys up front, the lifters are what I would check next. Take your rocker covers off and if nothing is blatantly obvious, turn the engine over looking for a valve that isnt moving. Engines lose oil pressure when the bearings are shot. 50PSI is good oil pressure and commensurate with the milage she's done (it would probably drop to 20 at idle when warm but still go up the gauge when the revs go up - that's perfectly acceptable). I'm sure you'd rather not take the lump out of the engine bay if you don't have to. It'll take about half an hour to check the pulleys and would potentially save you a headache. Good luck and all the best!
I always change the oil first so I don't circulate junk right away and have a fresh filter. Then I change it again after 100 miles or so..high detergent Castrol GTX has always done fantastic!
Bought the same vehicle 10 years ago. It had been well maintained and was in mint condition. I pulled a 36 foot trailer through the mountains with it and never a hint of a problem. Wish I had never sold it
Ike, dude I've been watching you and C&C for some years now...good stuff. I'm a veteran that wished he were living closer to you guys as I'm in SOFL with living on low income and need help bringing my only vehicle back to life as I have problems needing attention. Such a shame as you did so well getting her running again . Hopfully a set of bearings and a polish of the crank may bring it around . Cheap enough to do if you are doing it yourself . Thanks for the video buddy
Issac, just started the video and I had to comment immediately. I had a ‘99, same color with four wheel drive. I hope you have better luck than me. Mine was junk and I bought it when it was five years old. Going back to the video. Big Al.
Looks like the Janesville Wisconsin plant. And I'm irritated, lol. You managed to find a 2wd with a tailgate. Been looking for one like that for a while now. Great find, looking forward to seeing you get her back in shape!
Excellent video Issac :) I would suggestion change air filter, fuel filter, PCV Valve, oil filter plus engine oil, get bottle grey color of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank too, NAPA bottle RISLONE in rad top with antifreeze run thru also check thermostat plus water pump also Clutch fan and heater core too plus hoses too! Differential fluid to plus Brakes even Booster plus resivor & Air Conditioning pump too and Power Steering pump ! Sorry hear 350 motor need replacement too and should able find another better condition one too!
Those rods are knocking. Like you said not good. If your going to save it. Don’t need to shoot one out or drop a valve. Or blow a piston. Best to dive in and fix it. Thank you for sharing!
Nice ride you got there bud, that steeling sound kinda sounds more like an idler pulley going out to me, you might try spraying some blaster on it an see if it makes a difference or not, but I really think the motor is in better shape than you think really, worth fixing though👍🏼
Well the motor may not be good but that thing is clean, and the interior is my favorite color I love that blue. These trucks are my favorite 88-98 is so damn tough if you take care of them.
Isaac that is a noice looking Suburban sad the the engine took a dump. But on the good side Is you did get it running and found out about the engine before you got to far with it A freshened up power plant will make it a daily driver. Good luck and can't wait for updates on it.
Wow bro... we have a few of the same vehicles. Or you just have a little bit to many... LoL mine would stop running then magically start again. It ended up being the security brain that was fried. I fixed that and it runs GREAT now. So comfortable and smooth driver.
A crank kit is really cheap for those iv rebuilt a bunch of them....it's definitely worth fixing....the rid bearings won't effect oil pressure but main and cam bearings will ....I would definitely rebuild it that is a very nice truck...
i have a 99 suburban that was heavily used for plowing(260k ish when i got it over,280 now), and our family's old suburban (97) rotted out on us. so i transferred literally everything i could re build the motor even though it didn't need it but its just pissing oil i have to rip the trans out for the 3rd time. mines 4wd iv never seen a 2wd of that style but have fun getting the engine out lol, though you have proper tools and a shop...i have an 8ft tall 2 1/2 car garage that has my camero on jack stands and a 56 bell air on the other...its ...fun...trying to work in ther.... i also wish i had the hatch back like yours. i wanted to swap my barn doors but it seems ther hard welded and bonded to the body (hinges were worse than the ones on the one that rotted out at 175kish miles
Just my 2 cents. I own 2 of that gen, 99 1500 4x4 350 and a 98 2500 4x4 454. I'm betting that the damage was already done and that's why it wasn't being run. The good thing is, with everyone and their dog doing ls swaps, it means the vortex 350 can be had for pretty reasonable money now. Was a time when a vortex 350 was big money, if you could even fine one. The ls changed all that. So first thing I do is remove the annoying buzzer. Pretty easy it's under the dash, driver's side. So the top end interior is leather seats with heat. Cloth seat didn't come with heat. Also the barn doors are far better then the gate.
My buddy picked up a "mint" 94 1/2 ton gmc $200. Called me next week and asked about this hard knocking noise it was making. Went over and he started it up. It was like 2 sledge hammers making love. I told him to shut it down so it didn't break apart. Found a good bottom end and were swapping it. The old owner reported his daughter had been driving it and knocking slightly for the last year, but just drove easily. LOL
Heck with all that time and bearing stuff, just put an engine in it and it should have a warranty also. I had a Suburban I drove for 17yrs, always wish I still had it you can do anything with them, you can sleep in it if you want to, best of luck to you friend
Check the idler pulley before it takes out your belt. Our 96 Suburban did that when we heard that sound. Ours is still running good, only a small exhaust leak at the donut.
Had a 2001 suburban starter wire rotted off but it also spent nine years in New York.It broke down here in Texas so I’m changing it in the road with red ants so it looks like you’re a lot better position than I was. Couldn’t figure out how to get it off have to take that wire off the oil pan sensor and I’ll come right out.
Honestly the rebuild kit for those engines are not bad. Myself I would pull It apart and rebuild It but you may need A crank which Is not expensive at all. Dude you got A solid foundation for A great daily driver.
Isaac damn that"s a nice truck definitely worth fixing, I"m on my third Chevy 88-98 truck love that body style my truck has 165,000 and i would not think twice i would rebuild or crate motor in a heart beat. love the video
Hey issac its a nice truck man it's worth a new motor. I'd like to see you flim if you could please. That truck is mint man you're lucky it's not rusted out and if it was it would be going to the scrap yard but you can save it. Keep up the good work man God bless and peace out.
Isaac! Pls just start a chevette project. I’m begging you. Put a k20 or a kobota diesel. Something brother. I like you working on cars and trucks better then carts and cameras. Come on fella do it !
As others mentioned, I'd recommend making sure the idler pulley is good, as well as checking the alternator or similar. It's hard to hear over the internet, but it's worth checking. I've heard a small pebble stuck in the grooves of a serpentine belt make an engine sound bad.
nice find. the body is worth a brand new engine. My 96 is at 388k. its dryest 20 below cold rod knock in a startup is still quieter than the 6 liter LS. This truck gained it's problem before you got it.
I want to tell you to be easy with the transmission. On the 1998 there is a service bulletin for an electrical fix from GM concerning the transmission. Have the fix done or your trans will not last, if you put in a rebuild on With out the fix it will not las either.
Issac it'll Be Fine with a new Crate Motor . Its always a Roll of The Dice,The Oil pump was bad before causing Bearings to wear out Even though it was showing oil pressure.
Got a 99 gmc and a 2002 Chevy. The 99 felt like trans going maybe flex plate. Fixed that and drove but lacked power. Squeaky sound from passenger side bottom close to trans. Sounds like that and my guess is maybe check valves first then that back cylinder then the bearing for it. Picked up the 02 and parked the 99 ain't touched it since. 02 had problem loss of power blew exhaust manifold gasket and valve cover gasket. Cut cats off fixed so cut cats off 99 cause I didn't think of that then. Thinking of getting back to the 99 more and follow tips on starting it after its sat a few years. Gotta see more videos on suburban wrenching cause they are nice vehicles.
at first i thought it was a roller lifter that was rolling sideways on the camshaft but once you gave it some rpm you can tell its a bottom end knock. really nice truck though.
I had a Dodge Demon and it started clicking like that . Fluids were all good so I drove it around the block and the clicking stopped . Was driving it for a week and it ran better than it ever did . I was very happy , until , I was going down the interstate to work and it decided that a piston needed to go through the hood . LOL I dropped a rebuilt engine in it and sold it . Your truck is well worth a rebuild or replace of the engine . Too clean to let it go now .
Awesome video! I'm struggling with my 98 k1500 5.7 myself having to learn as I go trying to get it to run, This gave me some ideas on mine. I hope to see follow up vids on your suburban.
Just picked up a 99 suburban 4x4 with the same issue. I advise the upgraded intake gaskets if you do a rebuild or replace the engine as that is one of the biggest killers of these engines.
Vortec 350 in my Tahoe 188000 miles all I have ever done is change the valve seals drive it every day. Best thing I did is change out the spider injection for the updated direct port setup.
Isaac, In my 2 cents if you are gonna go though the trouble of pulling the engine and polish the crank/new bearings. You might as well do the entire bottom end. Get everything and be done with it. 140 isn't crap! & These even if you don't sell it are going for pretty darn good prices on the market. My Sisters '02 GMC 4.3 jimmy blew head gaskets at mere 120k.
I have not put any water in my system on any vehicle in the last 30 years I always use straight antifreeze and have never had a bit of a problem and the inside of the radiator looks like new
The click click is usually on those a bad solenoid for some reason every 4 years I had to put a solenoid on mine the heat from the exhaust clocks them my 5.7 my 5.7 only issues in 400k miles was always solenoids and about every 400k a water pump only issues I ever had.
Lol, my chemical compounding self has returned while watching you transfer the gas, I’m thinking that drum needs to be grounded, lol. Always love your videos Issac, thanks for keeping all of us entertained!
My suburban did the something. Had oil pressure but all main bearings were toasted. Only had 52,000 miles. Motor was clean inside with no sludge. Mine was a 1998
Get some GM top engine cleaner and run through it at idle I've seen a bunch of those motors sound just like a lower end knock from carbon. Squealing sounding like that dry tensioner to me. If you watch video back it was sticking. Just my thoughts we have saved quite a few of those engines over the years with GM top engine cleaner.
my uncle had a 1997 GMC that the engine went to knocking near 250,000miles. at the time this was a daily that drove it like he stole it, also his "office" in the log woods so the engine would stay running or idle for 6-8 hours a day and last everybody and their brother drove it too! of course he asked me "whats wrong with this engine?" i replied its tired, you kept the oil , oil and air filters changed, put a Goodwrench engine in it and keep on. this Goodwrench engine has 160,000+ miles runs and idles like a champ, the truck shows 410,000 miles.
You are lucky I've got the 06 trailblazer 5.3 probably the hardest starter replacement on earth me being a carpenter took me 40 fu## ing hours !!!!!!! Better then paying 1250$$ 🙈🙉🙊👍
Dude do a video of pulling the engine out rebuilding the bottom end polishing the crankshaft doing main bearings connecting rod bearings putting it together and putting it back in the truck that'd be an awesome video or series

Really enjoy your content man! keep it up!
Isaac! Pls just start a chevette project. I’m begging you. Put a k20 or a kobota diesel. Something brother. I like you working on cars and trucks better then carts and cameras. Come on fella do it !
That’s a awesome suv right there!!! Will get like 600-700kms a tank that’s what I get in my 93
Nice rig! Should've at least been a trailer burnout that sent it past it's prime!👌
Gen 1 Vortec is excellent motor! Roller cam, one piece rear main seal, No lifter problems!
What a shame. You are like this Old Man, never run out of something to do 🤣. Love your videos. Keep them coming. 🛵🧔💝
I want to tell you to be easy with the transmission. On the 1998 there is a service bulletin for an electrical fix from GM concerning the transmission. Have the fix done or your trans will not last, if you put in a rebuild on With out the fix it will not las either.
I'm more interested in the chevette! When I had mine, I always felt it was a great candidate for a rotary swap!
That's an awesome find! My dad has a suburban pretty much just like that! Totally do more videos on this truck 👍
Did not see the Tachometer moving up when cranking so I would Guess the Crank Sensor is Dead. 🤟🏻🇺🇸
Just picked up a 99 suburban 4x4 with the same issue. I advise the upgraded intake gaskets if you do a rebuild or replace the engine as that is one of the biggest killers of these engines.
Been dailying a 97 GMT400 for years now, love these trucks. Been nothing but reliable and fun to drive!
Hi sugar, from MamaCard in Florida. It’s almost midnight and I’m old so I should be asleep!
Just bought a 4x4 97 ext cab with that same exact noise working on swapping
the motor out.
Sounds like a dry bearing on the idler pulley
Vortec 350 in my Tahoe 188000 miles all I have ever done is change the valve seals drive it every day.
Best thing I did is change out the spider injection for the updated direct port setup.
Isaac, In my 2 cents if you are gonna go though the trouble of pulling the engine and polish the crank/new bearings. You might as well do the entire bottom end. Get everything and be done with it. 140 isn't crap! & These even if you don't sell it are going for pretty darn good prices on the market. My Sisters '02 GMC 4.3 jimmy blew head gaskets at mere 120k.
Needed to use finger's to count from 2014 I now the feeling Isaac; Great vid
I have not put any water in my system on any vehicle in the last 30 years I always use straight antifreeze and have never had a bit of a problem and the inside of the radiator looks like new
I love these gmt400s I own two my dad owns three since new! Great job Issac!
I had the same sound in a
5.7 same model. It was an idler pully locking and knocking.
The click click is usually on those a bad solenoid for some reason every 4 years I had to put a solenoid on mine the heat from the exhaust clocks them my 5.7 my 5.7 only issues in 400k miles was always solenoids and about every 400k a water pump only issues I ever had.
Glad you are back on fixing cars 🚗 it’s seems like it’s been a while.
Love my 98 Suburban replace your fuel filter on frame under back left door!
Had a buddy in high school drive his Chevy for years with it sounding like that haha
That sucks Ike!!!!!! It's worth fixin due to shape it's in!!!
I'm ready to see if it can be fixed. Thank you for the video
I like the little yellow vette.
Even if it’s a bad main bearing, 350 small blocks are cheap and easy to fix, and worth keeping around. Won’t take much to make that motor good again
The squeek sounded like it was on the accessory drive, take the belt off and check again? 🤔
