  • Dr Joseph Beiderman is the psychiatrist known as the "father" of ADHD. For 30 years, he's led the Ritalin revolution, responsible for dosing up millions of children. 60,000 kids in Australia alone are on powerful drugs to control their behaviour. But it's the behaviour of Biederman that's being questioned - how much money did the professor pocket from the drug companies out of ADHD? Have our children been overprescribed and overmedicated? Doctor John D'Arcy investigates.

Treating ADHD with therapy and counseling alone is a fucking waste of time. It’s about as useful as treating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia with same. Look, If you don't wanna medicate your kids I get it, but at least when they become adults they can make their own decision. I battled with adhd till I got diagnosed at 40. A 'LOW DOSE' of dexamphetamine has helped ENORMOUSLY. No I do not 'speed' on it. It clears the noise and chaos in my head so I can focus and concentrate & do many other things.

You should medicate children for adhd . They can’t consent to something that will most likely cause side effects to their body and change them biochemically

Not really, everyone experiences the different aspects that make up AHDH to different degrees. When it crosses from normal levels (such as some procrastination, disorganisation etc) and ADHD is when you have the whole basket of symptoms to a much more extreme extend than other ppl. So most ppl can imagine what it would be like to have AHDH if you try explaining it.

The opposite happens as well tho. Many kids hate the way the meds make them feel and yet they are forced to take them regardless. I was one of those kids n everytime my parents started to listen to me the doctors would convince them otherwise n i’d end up on even more drugs. Im not saying meds dont work for some people with adhd but they certainly aren’t for everyone and are most definitely pushed too heavily

100% I lost a fantastic co worker to a SSRI we noticed a change shortly after he started taking his new medication 4 months later he ended his life. He was put on it for anxiety SSRI's are EXTREMELY overly prescribed & one day the crack down on those will begin. Valium would have been much better treatment option or Klonopin Been on them over 10 years & use them responsibly & tested my self to see if I could slowly come off of them & know problem however I understand not everyone is the same the long acting ones seem to be less addictive & if one stops working go to another one & problem solved. People who abuse them give them a bad rap. These medications have saved my life & helped me greatly!

Aye i just got back on dexamphetamines after getting off them for about a year, it took away my anxiety and i can focus now.
I was on ritalin and a few other medications for years when i was younger and they caused manic episodes and anger issues, not everyone can function on the same medication.

  • @Jc22ny

Its extremely important to educate and not simply spread mass hysteria. Yes Ritalin and other ADHD drugs can be dangerous for some, but totally life saving for others. For those of Us that it has been a miracle drug, its frightening to think that it can become something prohibited. The Key here is to inform of the risk, but also not create stigma for those it works for.

Hello im a 14 y-o kid from sweden with ADHD and im now going to explain and talk about my own experiences with different ADHD medecins and stuff. (English is now my first language so sorry for any grammatical errors) It started when my mom got a serious concusion on my 10th birthday. Her doctor told her that later on she might experience similar sympthoms to ADHD caused by the part of the brain she landed on. She started talking alot abot how she felt with my dad and my dad als felt similar symptoms so he got a inqiry on ADHD and turn sout he had ADHD and mild autism. so then i also get a inqiry which showed i also had ADHD. The first medication i tried (i cant remember its name) made me vey depressed (edit: i also got suicidal thoughts but concerta is a miracle drug in my opinion) and very selfconcious. about a year with said depression i told my parents about it (i was 11) so we changed my medication to Concerta which made me happy and i could concentrate and i instantly went from one of the worst in my class to the top student. Meanwhile mom and dad both got accepted in to Mensa that club for smart people. i had very svere ADHD bt their genetics could have explained why i wasnt running around and destroying stuff. Anyway now im in the 8th grade and my friend who i suspected could have ADHD started talking about him maybe having ADHD so i gave him some of my pills to try (we dont care they aint the worst drugs we have tried) he instantly felt better bt his parents dont belive in medicating children but i keep giving him pills and those pills have helped him go from below average to average in our class. none of us feel withdrawl synthoms and no side effects. i have given pills to friends who whanted to se if they got the same effect but my friends who turns out dont have adhd just dumb they get a bit high. So with concerta in my experience gives desired effects to kids with ADHD and kids without ADHD get a bit high. Edit2: ADHD medecine does make me less social and more qiuet so yhea my ADHD medecine has worn of for the night now thats why so many edits

Thank God for psychostimulant medicines like dexamphetamine and methylphenidate. There are so many successful adults working and studying at Uni now who are no longer on treatment. They would never have been so successful if it weren’t for childhood psychostimulant therapy. Every medicine on the ARTG including Panadol may be unsuitable for use in certain individuals. These decisions should be handled by educated discussions between the patient, parents and a suitable specialist.

Have you heard of the name Joe Biederman?
If you haven’t already, then read this expose. However, on completion, should you be able to stomach the content, you will very likely be outraged.
Joseph Biederman was born in Communist era Czechoslovakia, following the second world war. He entered medical school in Argentina at age 16 and completing his residency and fellowship in Isreal. He began a career in child Psychiatry at Massachusets General Hospital in the early 1980s.
On 26th February 2009 Biederman was asked what rank he held at the institution. This was when an investigation into his taking of big pharma money and not declaring it was underway.
“What's after that?” asked one state attorney, Fletch Trammell.
    “God,” Biederman responded.
“Did you say God?” Trammell asked.
    “Yeah”

The SNRI medications to treat ADHD almost put me in the ER room & are proven to be much less effective to treat ADHD not to mention the cost & they only take 8-12 weeks to fully work LOL. For me uppers have been a huge game changer those used to be the first line treatment for depression before the way over prescribed SSRI's that have a huge hose of side effects. They are not a magic pill but for many they yield fantastic results. For Kids that don't respond to therapy & still have problems at school & behavior problems. The uppers are the best option I've seen this time & time again. If there abused they can cause problems bottom line don't abuse these medications & use the lowest does you can & they can be a game changer! In the states we have different view points about these medications & how effective they are. I feel bad for the parents who have a out of control child that gets kicked out of school because he can't get proper medications for ADHD to me that's child abuse & not having a quality of life.

Seems to me that big pharma amphetamine based adhd drugs are the first option for pediatritions and child psychiatrists treating kids, rather than the last these days.
I agree that there are many kids that need it, sooner rather than later. For many others there is a big question mark. My 8 yr old son is one of those.
I would not have considered putting my son on it, and did not really have many issues with him. His only real problem was that he was a different learner.
There also seems to be a blanket solution for all levels of severity in this condition, and then the actual diagnosis in some kids, seems a bit to convenient for my taste.
My son is unfortunately in the care of child welfare. It has not been a good outcome for him at this stage. They have made a real mess of many things.
He had no indications of adhd at his previous school, (they did have a personalised teaching program and where happy with his progress), he has only been diagnosed with very mild adhd, since his short time in child welfare.
Its all too convient to me, if he is only mildly adhd. Despite my very strong opposition to my son being medicated, they went ahead and did what they wanted, in any case.
There was no real effort to do any alternative therapies. They claim it lasted all of 3 months. The reading I saw stated that a program of at least 12 months was appropriate, for milder cases such as my son's.
I have never been provided any real supporting evidence, and am powerless to stop them medicating my son against my wishes. So much for child welfare, acting in my "children's best interests"
I was watching a doco of the oxytocin epidemic in the US, where big pharmacy was medicating whole towns and low income people with their poison.
They have now come up with a new stategy, that being to medicate the "fuck" out of our kids, to make their blood money. Pharmacological Parenting is a good term for it. It's an easy way to parent by remote control. Give the kid some pills, subdue him and get on with ya life.
It is a trend that will see another generation of social misfits and outcasts, just as the heroin, and a string of other legal and non legal drugs have been used to addict and impoverish generation, after mindless generation of poor innocent guinea pigs and social down and outs, for the last 100 years.
It's back to the days of snake oil being sold as a fix all ills in a pill solution, and as a former addict of their poison several times over I an a happy camper on the medicinal herb, and I say screw the criminal health system.

This is a RECENT finding that the adhd brain has 5 impaired areas: the amygdala, the hippocampus, the caudate nucleus, the putamen and the nucleus accumbens. It exists. Stop being so ignorant with your dogma about something you know nothing about.
