@@imogenjennings3992 I lived through the 1980s as I was born in September 1966 and it was really great time for music. At least up until early 1988. Because in 1988 the boy band era started with groups like Bros and New kids on the block and rap, hip hop and rave/acid house dominated the charts. But between 1980 and the end of 1987 the music really rocked!
"Purple Rain" by Prince and the Revolution spent 24 consecutive weeks at Number One. "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" spent TWO weeks at Number One, in America according to Billboard 100 in 1984. "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" went double platinum while "Purple Rain" sold more than 17 million. WHAM's "Make It Big" sold six times platinum, also released in 1984. I don't think Duran Duran dominated 1984 by a long shot. A great year nonetheless.

Duran Duran caused me depression. I saw the end of serious rock with these Brit fake asses. Hungry like the wolf made me throw up. I knew the end was at the door
After all these years, a masterpiece of pop songwriting such as this one never gets old! All 5 of them were really on top of their game here! Killer grooves between John's popping bass lines and Roger's ever steady beat. Cutting edge synth pads & those 'steel drum' samples from Nick and his Fairlight, killer cut and thrust power chords and rhythmically tight pluckings from Andy's guitars, topped off by a seemingly impossible melody ( ... And lyrics!) from Simon.... And here it is. My fav Duran Duran song ( together with Ordinary World!)... ever! And I was hooked in 1984. And thankfully so too! Happy Anniversary Duran Duran! Thank you for always being there!
Man Duran Duran was the greatest 80's bands EVER!!!!!!!! I know I've said it before but I can't help myself. DD gave us some of the best and most unforgettable songs of our lives.
1984 I was 14 years old, I enjoyed my adolescence to the fullest and Duran Duran was a fundamental part of this. ,,,,, THE. REFLEX !!! greetings from Mexico City
Greetings from the USA, I was 8 and came to the USA when I was 18, and absolutely loved my childhood in Mexico. When rich people ruled in Mexico and not the narco!
In the future when anyone asks you 'what were the Eighties all about?" all you need to do is show them this video. Classic song with classic Eighties visuals. This is truly a Watershed Moment.
@@massivelegend5792 I don't listen to Duran Duran weak songs ....which were plentiful on every album that followed RIO.......the Reflex was a horrible songs and so was UNION OF THE SNAKE....u need to re-evaluate your taste in music if u think those were 2 of DD's best songs
I'm a metalhead for most of my life but I will forever love 80s music that I grew up on. I was showing my 9 year old daughter this at breakfast and explaining just how big of a band DD was and that before RUclips, you sat and waited with a tape recorder by the radio for the song to come on or in front of the TV just waiting for the videos. It almost seems unfathomable how we did it because we live in such an instant gratification society but I think that it taught us discipline and appreciation for things for sure. I remember it like it was yesterday. These guys are actually an incredibly talented band too. John Taylor is a sick bassist.
Me too man. Metal and hip hop. But if it’s got a good bassline, I’m in. And these guys and others from this decade had that in droves. I also totally agree with what you said about instant gratification. I remember there was some George Michael video in the very early 90’s. Tyra Banks was in it, walking down a catwalk runway, nipple tassels on. We thought she was the hottest thing on the planet. So we sat around for like another 5 hours until the video came on again. We were like 10. 🤣 Lots of crap music in that span of time. But because of that day, I ended up going out and buying Check Your Head with my allowance money.
I'm also a metalhead, probably because of DD. Before, I couldn't recognize different instruments in a song. I learned to differentiate by listening to a lot of DD, and especially discovering the bass was like a revelation. And the next step was metal naturally, as my ears were trained for it thanks to DD. Also I became a bassist later on thanks to John Taylor, and still to this day his bass lines amaze me.
@@jatkins47 which is totally wrong, rap music is pathetic, rap music has no heart, no fire, no energy . The 80s was the golden age of pop music which died a long time ago

Duran Duran could have been the biggest band in the world. And still be today. They changed their formula, released poor quality songs, and that's how history went... But from 1981 to 1985, boy, they were kings.
@2:44 that moment when this young woman looks up… immortalized forever, in this video. She’s (hopefully) a grandmother now, still vibrant and full of life but moving on into her twilight years… but she can still look back and see her young self, even if just for a moment, and remember what it was like to be young and vibrant and beautiful… and at a friggin DURAN DURAN concert when they were in their PRIME!!!
39butchy1 I remember going to see Duran Duran 1984 in Leeds with sissy and Katherine. I had posters all over my wall - loved Simon Le Bon and John Taylor but my sister used to push me out the way and demanded I liked Simon and not John..... because she liked John Taylor and Roger lol 😂
Hey, Meadowlands Girl I bet our rooms looked exactly alike. Wall to wall Duran Duran. There wasn't a spot left and considered doing the ceiling. It was the only room left. I would have LOVED to have seen that '84 concert. Unfortunately, I just started getting into them at that time. That just goes to show us the power of MTV and videos. Seeing The Reflex and being absolutely mesmerized (no joke). It was full steam ahead and Duran Duran became my life. I always thought Nick was cool and did my best to emulate him. Clothes, hair, the works. Minus the makeup. I tried it once and thought, nah. He does it much better than I ever could. Thanks for your comment. 😁 Duran Duran forever!

From 2:44-3:15 for me represents the absolute peak of Duran Duran mania. I remember seeing this video for the first time in 1984 and remembering how big they were. Seeing the crowd reaction starting at 2:44 brings back that fond memory of this band at this time. Loved it then, love it now.
If I could relive one year in my life it would be 1984. Such a magical time with the best year of music ever. Classic after classic was born that year.
Interesting...George Orwell had bad premonitions about 1984. Police state and all. Turned out the opposite. And, Berlin wall fell amd communist Russia dissolved in 89. The police state came later, in the mid 90s but especially after 9-11.
DUDEEEE! 1984 was TOTALLY my year. So many firsts: first full year away from him, first gf I was truly mad for, first car, first real job (USCG). And saw a bunch of concerts (but not DD). It was pretty fricking epic. It’s funny, I’m a metal and hard rock guy but I totally dig DD too. Go figure.
The very first time I heard or saw Duran Duran was with this video, when it first aired on MTV. I was in fifth grade and visiting a friend, and I had kind of an awakening. I grew up not being allowed to listen to secular music, so I'd never heard anything quite like this. The music was WOW, and they were the most beautiful people I'd ever seen at that point in time. I've been a fan ever since. I recently came across my old Notorious CD and have spent the last several days listening to and watching everything I can find online. Such good memories, such great music. Thanks.
My girlfriend was listening to this back then and I was a rocker listening to the new Ozzy album and Motley Crue! Today I still listen to metal (old metal) and now I can enjoy pop music from back then as well! Better then whatever so called music of 2020!

@Cj Johnson yes!
I'm a metal listener too and I love Duran Duran as well.
Metal fan here also but can't help but appreciate the talent these guys had. John Taylor's bass work is excellent.
I'm 50 now and I wish if I could go back to the 80's

Duran Duran could have been the biggest band in the world. And still be today. They changed their formula, released poor quality songs, and that's how history went... But from 1981 to 1985, boy, they were kings.

@2:44 that moment when this young woman looks up… immortalized forever, in this video. She’s (hopefully) a grandmother now, still vibrant and full of life but moving on into her twilight years… but she can still look back and see her young self, even if just for a moment, and remember what it was like to be young and vibrant and beautiful… and at a friggin DURAN DURAN concert when they were in their PRIME!!!
The Reflex is where it all started for me in the summer of 1984. I'm still a big fan of them and always will be.
Hey, Meadowlands Girl
I bet our rooms looked exactly alike.
Duran Duran forever!

Yes, the reaction was very Beatles-esque!
I love the way Simon LeBon dances 🕺
suddendee Simon Lebon dances cool yes i agree.
Yes simon had some grooves in this video!.. dancing around the red screen there. He jumps off the stage at 1:21 .. it was insane!. talented guy.
So many firsts: first full year away from him, first gf I was truly
mad for, first car, first real job (USCG). And saw a bunch of concerts (but not DD). It was pretty fricking epic. It’s funny, I’m a metal and hard rock guy but I totally dig DD too. Go figure.

Of the 80s especially.
Una bendición escuchar tan buena música que rememora nuestra juventud y volvemos a sentir las emociones de nuestra adolescencia, gracias por compartirla, Duran, duran saludos y bendiciones

when Simon does the epic jump 1:20, John does "the look" 1:37, and
Nick does his shoulder thing 1:48, and the fan who just gets it 2:59!💗
Yes your right! , Simon jumped off in stage alot back then.. CARELESS MEMORIES - ARENA he jumped off the stage like 10 feet in the air and landed and did like 10 spins!. It was crazy!. If you didn't see it you should check it out!. These guys were a force to be reckoned with back the that's for sure!
I love Roger at 3:29
Watching this video and I am very envious of this crowd. Why? because I wish I were in this audience. I absolutely love this group! They have such talent and incredible energy. I was singing along with them. And yes, they are good-looking. Go Duran Duran!

These guys were on a roll back then. Their album was HUGE! And quite a good looking bunch, I had a crush on John Taylor loved his cheek bones. And the make up didn't hurt either! 🙆😁
