  • This is part 5 of L&L from the beginning of what I have 79-80. This section is all taken from a soap net special airing of this episode. I was not sure I would post the infamous scenes.. but other places on you tube you get it piece meal and you really need to see what was going on with them before and immediately afterwards. Please forgive me if you are offended. Just decided that I was posting the whole story or none of it. This will be easier to follow from the L&L 79-80 playlist on this channel. www.youtube.com...

    This will go down as the single most important scene in daytime history. It single handedly saved GH from cancellation, turned the show into a monster and set the table for a long run of game changing moments during Monty's run.

      I'm still watching. I go chronologically, with occasional bounces to other playlists. I had a desire to watch a bunch of the 2008, but never all the way through. I believe Sue and I have about the same stopping point there. I just felt like watching this again to remind myself about the intensity of the characters. This was some intense stuff! But, I'm like all of you on here, I watch LnL daily.

    What so many forget is the build up to this moment. Why do so many ppl forget that at this point we all were watching GH because the chemistry between Luke & Laura was insane!! At this point it was case of not "If" it would happen but "When"! The reason every wman fell in love Luke this HOT afternoon, is cause we knew Laura wanted Luke, just as much Luke wanted her. But, you just knew when she looked at Luke she felt guilty for wanting him.

    I dont' think we have forgotten. I just am not sure I agree. I know Luke loved laura from the moment he saw her... and Laura sure had feelings for him, but I am not sure it was love yet. She was very torn about her feelings for Scott. She gave luke all kinds of signals, but wasn't willing to admit it to herself. So though she may have felt it, she never admitted it, to herself or anyone else. That is what made it so complicated and interesting.

    This is art ,no mater the subject matter and this scene is Gone With the Wind level,executed brilliantly, by artist who cared about their craft. And the chemistry between these 2 is Vivienne Leigh ,Clark Gable level,they deserved every praise for this body of work. It was beautiful and Tony Geary, was passionate and crazy sexy ( and he still is sexy ). Even the experienced actress/movie star , Elizabeth Taylor noticed this and helped herself to Mr Gearys love for real and no one can blame her

      Haha so true. Interesting you mention comparisons to Gone With The Wind. I thought Luke and Laura’s first real kiss was the same level of sensuality and 🔥🔥🔥 as the one in that movie between Scarlett and Rhett. But also later on Rhett forces himself on Scarlett during an argument, and she wakes up the next day in a very good mood like he’s just rocked her world.

      @@user-ve5ln5le9y These actors were ,especially Anthony Geary who's older and gifted,from a period where good training was a must, when you put an onscreen couple together,of whatever age group, or cross age groups,they should have chemistry or the scene, no matter how naked the couple, becomes boring. If you look at Genie Francis during the Lovers on the run storyline, I think she was 18 barely, but she was talented and skilled enough to project older and step up to the intense scenes, so that the much older Luke didn't come off as gross, theat was helped also by AG's talent. On today's show the real young teen actors , they're okay,some better than others, with training etc, the actress that plays Trina is quite good ,,but for example the blond actress that plays Joss, don't think she at 17?? has the depth to pull off a modern Luke/Laura type story, without Luke coming off as full on perv, again Genie Francis who was also blond, as a teenwas able to pull off this huge story and today when given a good sl, still can.

    WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THIS CLIP THAT HASN'T BEEN SAID BEFORE... IT WAS SAD FOR BOTH OF THEM AND YET IT CHANGED THE DIRECTION OF THEIR STORY FOR EVER. LUKE'S LOWEST POINT IN HIS LIFE CAUSED HIM TO DO SOMETHING THAT HE WOULD NEVER OF DONE. PLUS THE STORY LINE FOR LUKE'S CHARACTER WAS TO BE KILLED OFF. THAT ENDING WAS CHANGED AT THE LAST MINUTE AFTER ANOTHER ACTOR LEFT FOR A NIGHT TIME SHOW.
    (BY ROY, AND WERE KEEPING LUKE ) IT'S JUST SHOW BUSINESS.

    You are absolutely correct! It quickly had to be rewritten as a seduction, which you can see here it was not, but as Genie herself notes in an Oprah interview it was more like date rape which was not even a term used then. While we could never condone what Luke did, knowing the story, we could understand what happened, why it happened, and how she could love this very flawed man since she was so flawed herself.

    When I 1st watched the rape scene on this channel I decided to do some research. What I discovered is that no rapist whether it's acquaintance or stranger rape has guilt and regret afterwards. Which makes Luke truly a unique rapist.. He actually loved her and thought he would never get to hold her because he was going to die. Additionally by her behaviors and actions he truly thought that she loved him as much as he loved her.

    @alkarania I think it's hard to undersand from just this... because they had so much history before that night... months of scenes they share that I just don't have....they really were friends. Hence the reason Laura wouldn't leave when he told her to. She cared too much about him to leave him like that... him being drunk, hopeless and finding a way for her to be with him without her being unfaithful to Scott (as he explains it way later when they revisit the rape in 99) just didn't change it.

    I love hearing about the legend of l&l. Gloria monty really saved the entire genre. She asked tony to come on & he was skeptical about doing a soap & she said " I know I know we are gonna change all that " this story was so popular that they had the big wedding in nov to have our own " royal" wedding like lady di 's. Elizabeth freaking Taylor wanted in. Sammy Davis jr was a big fan. I was just watching the 96 cassadine saga & all the p.c. police are over on the comments I had to correct one person who said " a man must have dreamed this sick fantasy up. The writers are all sick " so I said no actually a woman was in charge of this the great gloria Monty & she's the reason why gh is still around & soaps all benefitted bigtime when they were on their way out. Also I said if u want to blame anyone blame about 30 million fans bc luke was short term & the gh brass was shocked how much the fans went wild for this couple after the rape. They of course caught lightning in a bottle & gave the fans what they wanted. So they had to backtrack a lot but it wasnt like Laura just forgave Luke. Many people defending this said laura was very angry at luke for like a year. That's why I'm hear to watch. What's sicker is in the 90s after todd led a brutal gang rape fans wanted to see Marty & todd have a romance & the head writer was going to do it until the actors refused & threatened to quit. Anyway the beginning if rise was so familiar to me & I guess people already know that it was sampled for biggie a rap song called hypnotize. So herb alpert hit the jackpot twice. This story had him top of the charts & when biggie did hypnotize he got the royalties in the late 90s.

    This scene is art ,it is make believe ,but the 2 talented actors made it real . This scene is beautiful ,because of the way it was set up,directed,written,film ed and portrayed. portrayed, it's subject to interpretation and the chemistry between Anthony Geary and Genie Francis was among the best ever seen on screen ever ,Gone with the wind level.. one thing has nothing to do with the other,we all know the suggested act towards the end was deplorable,but again ,this is make believe ,this is art .

    It was easy to re-write history if you want to call it that. We don't know what happened on that floor that night. What we do know is that Laura is the guilt queen. I think it started against her will but maybe she had an orgasm. I mean he certainly wasn't ruff with her by kissing her neck and all as they fell out of frame. The scratches she had came from her run through the park. It's hard to say because when you keep watching these videos and see the kind of denial and avid liar Laura was before and after the "rape/seduction", She's not credible. I love her to pieces though. :-)

      @bjishername 7 лет назад +2

      I am a follower of the original storyline and Guza changed what Gloria Monty originally wrote. You have to see Laura's confession to Rick and then Leslie. Everyone in Port Charles knew the truth. Luke later on took Laura on a boat and the truth came out that she was attracted to Luke. When she went to the Port Charles Police department to tell the truth Luke begged her to tell the truth she refused.

    • @terricoleman5495
      @terricoleman5495 6 лет назад +3

      It was rape. Anyone who watches the episodes know it was. She said NO, it doesn't matter if she was attracted to him. People can be attracted to others without following through with it, it's human. People wanted her to say it wasn't but it was. She forgave him later and came to understand why he did it but it was rape.

The rape, the day she & Luke went on the run, and the reunion in 1983 when she had escaped from the island. Do you think it's just a coincidence, or an element in Gloria Monty's unmatchable style? And can you think of any other times she wore bright royal blue?

      Coheedfan Laura was scared she loved Scotty very much. Laura knew that Luke cared for her but not as deeply as Luke made it out to be. I don’t think she knew how deep that love for her ran in his heart. I don’t think Luke knew himself or understood?

      Kayhy, 100% right in your explanation. I've explained many times, cause I am old enough to remember or fans can read the transcripts on line. Luke was obsessed, he insinuated himself into her life. Monty played him being raised by a madame, his kid sister trafficked by her aunt Ruby. Sorry to be so blunt, but if you read the the scripts they prove he was a street kid who pictures Laura as Bobbie said the blond fairy princess. Roy knew too, he found $1500 in the disco books. He wasn't in love, he was in obsession, which is much different than love. He grew to love her after the road when he hurt her innocence exactly like he explained to Bobbie. There is so much background building not seen here which explains why he was horrified at what he had done.

      Well I could be wrong but at this early time. I don’t think Laura had any idea that Luke loved her the way in which he did. I don’t think she knew how deep Luke’s love for her ran? JMHO. Rosie out.

      After school for me too (15 yrs old. for most of 1980 anyway). There were so many soap operas back then - you could not avoid them (and game shows too). But I watched a lot of Ryan's Hope, All My Children (they came first for me). I recall my first episode of GH was the day Luke and Scotty Baldwin fought on Frank Smith's yacht. Summer of 1980. There was a lot of hype / word of mouth going around for that climax. I had relatives that were already into it too which got me into it. Anyway, I stayed with GH until the day Laura strangely disappeared into a fog (years later). But It's great now to see episodes before that time frame. I'm going to start watching from the beginning of your playlist sussezq. I really look forward to seeing the episodes when Luke and Laura were on the run with Hutch again (and that creepy lady who was actually one of Frank Smith's hitmen - what a surprise that was).

    Oops ,sorry,yes, their real life personal stuff, is private .To speak about this story ,even my oldest sister Marge, who doesn't like this genre,when she read other critiques,agrees that acting is art,like those Michelangelo paintings with violence,beautiful,but with a disturbing depiction. As much as I love these 2, I cringe when I hear the r word .With good reason ,they tried to go turn it.this is make believe.... But thank you again, for posting some of the best scenes ever seen on screen

    • @sdavis5001
      @sdavis5001 5 лет назад

      they had to put that turn in it. Luke's character wasn't supposed to take off like it did. Once Monty saw a legend coming, it worked. Sadly years later the writings had Luke tell his kids, and brought it back down to its true nature. When watching these, I def. do not think ahead!!!

    Anybody notice, the production music is never heard again, after this scene?

  • @ghfever4445

    Brian is so sweet to be willing to get up at that hour to go pick Laura up. And yes, we don't know what supposedly happened when they went out of sight of the camera as far as Laura's actions and why she had doubts from the beginning and ran away to the park and wouldn't identify Luke. Whatever the case, it is not real life. ETA When I watched the GH L&L originally when it aired on TV in 1979 I was aware that Luke loved Laura by the time of the rape. I just forgot some of the missing scenes. I honestly think the fact that there are so many scenes of the journey of Luke and Laura (such as the handkerchief scene mentioned here, the picture taken of her in her cheerleading outfit and other scenes) we don't get to see that it seems sort of rushed and as though there wasn't enough time for it to be about love.
    I do wish those scenes existed somewhere so that we could watch them. I remember as I watched them again recently for the first time wondering myself was Luke in love with Laura at the wedding(with Scott) and when he seemed sad in the scene with Bobbie afterward. I thought "How can he be in love with her so quickly?" because I didn't know some of the other scenes ever were.

    The whole rape sequence is really disturbing while leaving a lot to the imagination. Was it shocking even back in 1979? Also, I heard that TG was only supposed to be on for a few months but they decided to put Luke and Laura together as a couple instead. What I don't understand is...were people seriously rooting for them as a couple after the rape? Seems a bit sick...

    • @QueenOfTheNorth65
      @QueenOfTheNorth65 Год назад

      Yes, it was shocking, and yes, many many people were rooting for them. That’s why they became such a legendary couple. I was not one of those rooting for them. I wouldn’t root for a rapist, which is what even Genie Francis now says Luke is.
