Luke and Laura "Day of Reckoning" P3

  • Luke and Laura discuss the fact that he raped her 20 years ago. These scenes offer insight into why Laura forgave him and why Luke will always be obsessed with her.

Tony Geary and Genie Francis are wonderful in these intense scenes but any longtime GH fan can tell you that Luke and Laura actually discussed the rape many times right after it occurred. It was only after Luke and Laura became an incredibly popular pairing (after the first summer on the run) that the discussions were completely dropped and the official version became a seduction. In fact, the encounter was deemed a seduction only once on screen. Basically the issue was ignored for 20 years until General Hospital revisited this dark bit of Luke and Laura's history.

Wow this was so well done. This is exactly how many of us saw this back in79. He was so in love with her, we felt his pain, and we knew that she said no, but we also knew she had already fallen in love with him also. It's screwed up I know!! But we loved them so much and we wanted them together so bad. I won't apologize anymore for loving them together.

But then Luke appeared (He was not even goodlooking, I thought who's this dweb?). But OMG the intense chemistry & Heat between Luke & Laura was unreal (Never seen before or since). We all knew they were going to come together we just didn't know how it was going to go down. Gloria Monty shocked the hell out of all of us that day. It was HUGE news back then. Tony was NEVER treated like crap, and for all means and purposes they made more money then any other soap stars. Genie was treated not nearly as well as Tony. But they paid for treating Genie like shit. Half the viewers (Maybe more) walked when she did, and then when she would come back ratings would go thru the roof. As long as they had BOTH of them on the show, ratings soared. One left, lots of viewers left and with BOTH gone ratings hit rock bottom. Why do you think ABC begged them back in 93? In 93, Tony refused to come back without Genie and vice versa. He did the Bill Ekart thing but was gonna walk or did for a lil while (Can't remember exactiy). Omg is laura really saying basically she asked her for it. That luke should blame her. My head is spinning. I guess people are complicated. Laura's saying she wanted him but she said no no no . So not sure how it's her fault. Luke thought he was going to die & i think he thought hed be killed & took what he wanted which was laura. But he didnt die & she was traumatized. This writing really shocked me. I could see her forgiving him but I'm not ok with her saying she did it !
I can put it this way I had a deep crush as a teen on a boy. We were best friends & he must have known I loved him. If I even knew what love meant. One day he tells me he is starting to be attracted to me which was exciting . We were at a party and when nobody was looking he ran towards me and started kissing me & trying to rip my button down open it took me by surprise & I didnt like how he was manhandling me it didnt feel like love but him being lustful & my instinct was to scream no & I did but he kept working my shirt open til someone came in & he pulled away fast. After that we stopped really talking. So even though I had a crush on him.wgich he knew I said no. I was humiliated by the way he just kinda treated me as property . So I think laura similarly had a crush but luke was being pushy & she didnt like that & they slid to the floor her screaming no. No means no even if u flirt or have a crush it doesnt mean u should be ok with him.fircing himself

@Judith Jerde oh thanks its OK. I was 14 a few years younger than laura thankfully it didn't go further. This boy I mean I had such a crush on him unrequited for years & then when he just started attacking my blouse I screamed b/c I wanted to be courted not treated like a blow up doll. Maybe a kiss or asked out. Just went at me. Sad thing is when he stopped talking to me I blamed myself. Now I know better as if he really cared for me he wouldn't have done that. He def knew I had a crush on him I'd had since 6th grade ! So i think in how laura related this I think it struck a chord that laura had a crush on Luke I can def buy that but she also said the right thing thank God " but it wasn't an invitation to rape me " so laura was 17 Luke close to 30 & sounds like she crushed on her older boss. Still rape is never OK. Laura sounds like she didn't want Luke to go to prison b/c this was very complicated too much for a 17 year old kid & on top of it she was traumatized. Honestly the story wasn't intended to be laura falls for Luke. Sadly they had already written the rape & the fans were buzzing big time about this couple so the writers had no choice. They rode the wave the fans wanted. Also it was a different time. We get wiser & as more studies & analysis is done we learn more.

Was this right around the time that young Elisabeth Webber got SA herself? I remembered that Lucky found her and comforted her and then he found out that his father Luke SA his mother all those years ago. Liz and Lucky ended up hitting it off later on. I love how during this entire scene they cut the music out almost completely until the end. It was very intense listening to the silence in the room while two people FINALLY addressed the elephant in the room. However I frankly was quite appalled and confused by Laura here. I don’t understand how she thinks it’s her fault. Luke should have been in jail for what he did to her. He was after all the adult. It’s no wonder why Lucky got so furious with both of his parents.

Lucky says don't even say her name after what your dad did to her. Nik tells Lucky that's rich coming from you after what your dad did and Nik tells Lucky. Lucky doesn't believe N so he does some research and talks to Scotty. He confronts Luke who tell Lucky what happened then Laura comes back to town and Lucky confronts her about it.

How does anyone explain away rape? The writers did a great job here in their attempt to romanticize it. Both Luke and Laura knew exactly what it was, they both ADMIT it during this conversation. Luke knew how young and inexperienced Laura was. And Laura married Scott out of some adolescent fantasy and had no idea what marriage even meant. They were two people on a collision course with each other. And the fact that they ended up having a life together never made sense to me. In real life it would have never lasted. I think them getting married and forever being on the run after that was the writers way of keeping it going. If there had been no danger, no left-handed boy, no Cassadines, no Ice Princess then they would have imploded much sooner rather than later. It was all nothing but a long, drawn out romanticized adventure story. The Laura of today would have never held Luke's attention for one second. And I don't think she would have given him a second glance either....this story could have never been told in today's time. The fans would have decimated the show for it.

I assume you were around to see this all from the beginning. So we will have to agree to disagree. Regardless of our difference of opinion I think we can agree they were a huge part of our young teenage years, and the chemistry between them was so intense I'm surprised our tv's didn't go up in smoke. I saw an interview where Gloria Monty said she had a long talk with TG, GF, and Genie's Dad before they decided to go with "Night At The Disco" (Thats what I prefer to call it). Gloria said, at this point the ratings were quickly climbing, but ABC was still talking about cancelling GH. So she told all 3 of them, in 48hrs we will be the biggest thing on Daytime tv OR they will run us out of town on a rail and cancel us within a week. They all agreed to "Roll The Dice". But they NEVER expected the fans reaction would be what it was, and it freaked TG out when the next day he stepped off a flight to 100s of screaming fans. It bothered him very much to see women holding signs that said "Rape Me Luke". He was able to put a stop to those signs pretty quickly by addressing them, rather then ignoring them. He let them know that such signs were not only disrespectful, they were painful, heart breaking to women whom had been thru the trauma of rape.

TG is a wonderful actor, but he was always disturbed by this and never called it a "seduction". He called out to the entire cast that it was rape! As a teenager, I watched this "love" story unfold, and I thought it was weird that a girl my age would want a guy so much older than her, not to mention a guy who raped her!Gloria Monty pulled off nothing short of a miracle, turning a rape into a seduction, then true love, then, the wedding with a guest list of over 30 million. Somehow, the public went for it, ratings soared, and
all was forgiven. And Scotty was vilified. Luke was glorified. And Laura wept tears of pure joy at her wedding. This was perhaps the most improbable storyline in soap history (give or take a 1000) but it became a phenomenon. What the public didn't know was that the person first in line to pull the plug on Luke & Laura was Luke (Tony Geary himself). He grew tired of the role that shot him to stardom, but also permanently typecast him as Luke Spencer, and he could never move beyond the role and on to other projects. He's happily retired in Amsterdam, where he says no one recognizes him, and he sounds relieved and content.
Laura went on to marry Kevin Collins, and seems perfectly happy and content. And GF has stated how nice it's been to work with her 2nd soap husband. I guess all's well that ends well, but what "a
      long, strange trip it's been". R.I.P L & L (and Jerry Garcia).

Katy Dalton definitely reached a level of phenomenon in the world of soaps and culture. I’m grew up watching it and was always mindful of the fact that Bobbie Spencer was the one who championed her brother to manipulate Laura in order for her to get her hands on Scottie. Everything falls into place when you’re mindful of that. The Spencer’s had a hard and traumatic upbringing and the really good thing about the writing is that time to time they used that to stay consistent about their psychological foundations. Laura too came from trauma, being stolen as an infant and being raised by parents in Canada only to find out they are not your birth parents and her marriage at a very young age. Genie Francis once said of Laura that she always wants to do the right thing, not fully taking into account her own feelings and wants, what makes everyone else happy. She truly is one of the best, strongest and most complex characters in day time history.

Welcome to the inconsistency and retconning of soap operas. Tony Geary was only supposed to be on the show 13 weeks and killed off. So the writers put in the rape. But when he proved to be a popular character and signed on longterm, they had to somehow "explain away" the rape in order to make LNL the super couple we know they eventually became. Basically, the writers came up with it was a "seduction" and "they made love." (Forced seduction was a popular theme in romance novels back then,). Then came the 90s and that BS didn't fly anymore so the writers wrote this storyline of LNL admitting and then coming to terms with what really happened.

All of us who were there from the beginning 1970's forward (ya know us old ppl LOL) completely disagree with you. She was in love him before "Night at the disco". We all knew that and he was madly in love with her. We KNEW shyt was gonna go down, the only question was when, where, how? We were stunned or as Genie & Tony said Gloria Monty certainly knew how to get ppl's attention. But the chemistry between them was already so intense before "Night At The Disco" there was no going back. I don't like Laura taking any responsibility for the rape, however aside from that everything said in this conversation is how we all saw it back then. There are a LOT of episodes missing before "Night At the disco". Because until L&L sucked the whole damn country into GH, soap operas had very little money. They had to reuse film, in fact up til 1979 when GH sucked us in the budgets were so bad they often had to go "LIVE". They HAD to know their lines and know how to ad-lib if needed. I can't imagine the pressure they were under. This intense relationship built up for a YEAR before "Night at the disco". But on youtube it looks like he just showed up and raped her.

    • @SCordova19
      @SCordova19 Год назад +3

@@yevettebamber4273 yeah. I don’t really care the backstory consent is mandatory and trying to justify rape is exactly that. You could say ‘Luke and Laura both grew and learned from this and Luke would never do this again and if Laura has forgiven him it’s not up to anyone else to decide….but you’ve tried to downplay rape and that’s not great. This hasn’t aged well. No amount of backstory changes that rape is rape. We could take this as a learning moment for men or we could try and justify it…let’s try and make this conversation she a little bit better. And I’m sure you’re right that many people pre 1970 disagree these are the same people who made laws saying it was a girls responsibility to not let her bra strap show in school to not distract boys, the same generation that said go put a sweater on Uncle X is coming over, the same generation who blame victims when they are raped. So maybe take a lesson and move forward instead of defending a rapist.
It doesn’t matter if he just showed up and raped her or if there was a year of backstory before the rape. Rape is always wrong.

their house getting shot up by a mob. Laura actually had to shoot and kill one of the intruders to save Luke. Exciting stuff, but when the smoke cleared (literally)
Luke just couldn't adjust to being married with a family and a home.
He was an adrenaline junkie, and Laura grew up and wanted to put down roots. She wanted a sense of normalcy. She finally got it with Kevin. p.s. I liked her with Scotty, too.
