@@sdavis5001 the sessions usually start with only the victims discussing their trauma but at some point, depending on the victims' comfort level, the spouses/ significant others are brought in to participate. It's part of the healing process and I think it's important because spouses of victims are also victims at some level but are often expected to be supportive of the victim while dealing with their own anger, guilt and sense of powerlessness alone.

No one should coerce a rape victim into any kind of therapy. Everyone is different and needs to cope in their own way. That was a terrible therapy session and Scottie is a control freak that only cares about his own needs. His wife is a rape victim and it was disgusting the things he just said to her

My opinion was always that the reason Laura couldn't be intimate with Scotty is because she was attracted to Luke, but hadn't really admitted that to herself.
I agree. She openly flirted with him after the memorial for the man she thought was her father. She told Luke she would be at work instead of going home with Scott. Luke was so compassionate with her, reminding Laura she had shared many stories about her childhood. At that point she ended up in an embrace with Luke holding her comforting her. That's part of the push pull relationship, which carries on in the next storyline with her apartment door, you push and I'll pull.
Its difficult to be intimate with a man when you dont feel he is truly compassionate about your pain and embarrassment. I felt Scotty made therapy all about himself

The things he said, and how he behaved, spoke a thousand more words than what was seen. Laura had every right to walk, right then. At least to separate. But, she was a kid who just wanted something in her life to work out. This is JMHO; I did not find her being attracted to another man, while married, in the least bit disturbing, or wrong is the word. She was 17!! A child bride; most young women (and men!!) have natural hormones that explore. I know it's a written story. I look at as real, lol, we all love the show!

This was of course a "soap version" of the theme of rape. If this was any reflection therapy for rape back then, it was so incredibly backwards. No victim should ever be pressured to participate in any kind of therapy, group or otherwise until they are ready. And certainly not a couples group with mixed genders. I don't know if we have progressed in this area of therapy. But I certainly hope so. This whole arc on GH gave a very distorted and misleading message to victims.

Scotty was a victim too and although he pressured Laura to get help, who was there to guidance him through the trauma? And what answer other than pressing for therapy was there for HIM and HER? Especially with their sexual issues. Just do nothing? Acquaintance rape is so very common (I became a rape counselor because of this LL story on GH) and for Laura to return to work at the Campus Disco and see Luke everyday was plain NUTS. For me (being a couple of years older than Genie) Luke was an OLD man who raped a teenager! I NEVER bought into them as a couple and thought it was horribly SICK. I had Luke on serious FF until he became a raging drunk then got with Tracy in the late 2000's.
At first I felt Scotty was a victim, too, and felt sorry for him, but then he got more and more controlling and verbally aggressive with Laura and he should have sought therapy alone or with the other men NOT with the female victims and for him to say he was capable of raping her himself was the last straw! As a rape therapist I would think you would recognize that! 😢 Laura deserved to have the opportunity for private therapy and did not deserve to be subjected to that!!! The women all deserved to have group therapy with only women and without the me present!!! Acquaintance rape is common, and the woman feeling guilty and not wanting to name her rapist is too, and GH mentioned that repeatedly , but still failed to adequately address the guilt and shame Laura and other rape victims experience and the part I find disturbing still is that GH did not emphasize that rape is NOT the victims fault, ever! No means No! I agree it was nuts that she continued to work at the disco. Laura, being Laura, felt compassion for Luke's pain and Luke showed what seemed to be genuine remorse and treated her very tenderly both before and after that incident and kept telling her he loved her while Scotty was getting meaner and more controlling and verbally hostile and aggressive, acting much more like an abusive husband and potential rapist than Luke was, while Luke was acting more and more as the romantic protector. This made the audience cheer when Laura chose to run away with Luke. But in real life, abusive men often act remorseful and romantic and promise never to do it again, until they do. I worked at a shelter for battered women and saw it over and over again. As a 17 year old when I started watching when Luke and Laura were on the run, when all my friends and classmates watched, too, and having missed the whole rape plotline I rooted for Luke & Laura! GH revisited this issue and addressed the fact that rape is never ok, and can have long term repercussions years later when Elizabeth was raped and Lucky while supporting her, found out that his father had raped his mother. Having missed these 1979 episodes I didn't see how this epic couple could have started with a rape, but now I do. The writing and fabulous acting made this journey believable and made Luke and Laura empathetic characters while it vilified Scotty. I think if I had seen the journey of these episodes at 17, I would have still rooted for Luke and Laura. As a mature woman who has experienced what I have, I find the underlying message of acceptance of victim blame and obsessive love disturbing and the aggression and domineering, controlling behavior of Scotty as reprehensible and repulsive.
I love how Scotty immediately tries to make the rape about him and not Laura.

As a 17 year old when I started watching when Luke and Laura were on the run, when all my friends and classmates watched, too, and having missed the whole rape plotline I rooted for Luke & Laura! GH revisited this issue and addressed the fact that rape is never ok, and can have long term repercussions years later when Elizabeth was raped and Lucky while supporting her, found out that his father had raped his mother. Having missed these 1979 episodes I didn't see how this epic couple could have started with a rape, but now I do. The writing and fabulous acting made this journey believable and made Luke and Laura empathetic characters while it vilified Scotty. I think if I had seen the journey of these episodes at 17, I would have still rooted for Luke and Laura. As a mature woman who has experienced what I have, I find the underlying message of acceptance of victim blame and obsessive love disturbing and the aggression and domineering, controlling behavior of Scotty as reprehensible and repulsive.
