- This is part 6 of L&L from the beginning of what I have 79-80. This section is all taken from a soap net special airing of this episode. I was not sure I would post this or not
.. but other places on you tube you get it piece meal and you really need to see what was going on with them before and immediately afterwards. Please forgive me if you are offended. I'm impressed once again at the depth of emotion with which Tony played this scene. He made you feel Luke's despair and his need to hold Laura before he dies. Horrible state of circumstances and far-reaching decision on Luke's part, but I fell in love with him that day too. He was so raw in his fear and need to connect with her that you couldn't hate him. Bet he had no idea how his and Genie's lives were about to change. Genie did an exceptional job of playing the girl who wanted to comfort Luke

You are so right Lukejunkie. It was really incredible that the audience (mostly women, of course) never hated Luke for raping Laura. That was the genius of this episode. We understood why he lost himself that night. As a mother of 2 girls and 2 boys, I still go back and forth whether it was rape or a seduction. 40 years and I can't decide yet. Tony & Genie were the best.
What's amazing is how a moment in time can change ur whole life! Tony's contract was up the week this took place. He went to bed that nite thinking he would be out looking for a job again n woke the next day to complete insanity!!! Even my jr high bf raced home to watch gh with me everyday !
I tell you right now... NO other actors in my opinion could have done it better.. Even after ALL THESE YEARS!.. STILL the very best to this day! JMVHO! Peace out Rosie.

Scott didn't even call to find she got home safely, that she got the message he couldn't pick her up at 1 a m especially when he screamed at her about being a liar ect. I have to fast forward thru Scott's violent in your face outbursts.

I agree sussezq. Laura did forgive Luke for the rape. Their relationship was very complicated and fascinating which is why so many came on board with their coupling. I think Genie and Tony surprised many with their incredible chemistry
it doesn't matter. It's still rape...not "seduction" as Monty claimed.
I was never the soap opera type and only heard about Luke and Laura through the years (I was 5 when the big wedding hype happened in 1981), but the more I watch these old scenes on here the more impressed I am with the writing and the acting. This is great inspiration for writers to develop a compelling and timeless storyline. WOW!

Laura, I hate to say this, but you are better at protecting Luke from Frank Smith than the police.

Date rape is rape! The problem is that the story I saw.. there was no doubt that Laura was raped... but I believed that she could forgive Luke. People who didn't watch the whole story (which is not here) cannot believe that is possible... but these incredible actors made me believe it could be done. It was INCREDIBLE entertainment....and acting like none had ever seen up to this point in daytime ...and perhaps never since. Tony Geary and Genie Francis ARE INCREDIBLE!!
agreed 1000%. No question it was rape. I felt bad when she explained to Scott what happened. She did make it sound like they were close and they took it too far. She did not tell him that she screamed NO and he forced her...that's about when they turned it around.
Yes it was, but the sheer acting The incredible dedication to there craft which is pure magic. The respect TG and GF (aka) Luke & Laura have for one another. Well the are by far and will never be seen again on day timeTV is beyond compare true arteries. Also the love they have for true entertainment from the heart. Thank you RosieAm so sorry about this TG no longer respect’s GT . I read something on RUclips just Saturday afternoon. That TG yelled at GF sooooo, badly that she walked away crying and very up-set. Why would TG even think about doing something like that in the first place. TG once said in an interview that GF was his actor soulmate and on Phil Donahue when asked how did it feel to kiss GF. Had she told him the "detailed way", Idk there may have never been a story to go on like it did. That was clever writing.....sad that it was rape, yet being able to flip the switch. Elizabeth Taylor saw this beautiful,artistic scene and went crazy again,for a guy . Motivated, she offered to be on the show and helped herself to Anthony Gearys love in real life and no girl can blame her ,that guyl motivated a lot of girls of all ages ,he was crazy special
AG later said in a People Magazine article the E.T. story wasn't true.The article is out there,but years ago.

I JUST WATCHED ALL THE SCENES LEADING UP TO THIS POINT... IT MAKES IT MUCH MORE CLEAR TO ME... WHAT WAS GOING ON... LAURA AND LUKE WERE FRIENDS... I MEAN THE WAY LUKE SWITHCES TO LUST TOWARD HER... I REALLY CAN'T UNDERSTAND... IF IT WAS THE LIQUOR OR HIM, THINKING HE WAS GOING TO DIE... BUT LAURA DIDN'T HAVE ANY REASON TO BE AFRAID OF HIM... BUT ONCE HE STARTS BEING AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS HER... IT WAS LIKE A RABBIT CAUGHT IN A TRAP... LAURA/GENIE WAS LIKE A DAISY... FRAGILE AND BEAUTIFUL... HE COMPLETELY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HER THAT NIGHT... BUT THERE DEFINITELY WAS AN ATTRACTION BEFORE-HAND. SEXUAL SITUATIONS... I THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE OF A SHOWCASE TO REALLY SEE HOW GREAT GH WAS AT THIS TIME AND WHY IT SOARED IN THE RATINGS... IT WAS GREAT DRAMA.. AND FUN TO WATCH...
A LOT of footage BEFORE this night was lost. Not even ABC has it. I mean months of footage. We knew Laura had fallen in love with Luke also before this scene. We started out as Laura n Scotty fans but the chemistry was so intense between Luke n Laura it could not be denied. If you saw all the flirting n back n forth between before this you would get it. Laura wanted him, but she was very publicly married at 17, n didn't know how to handle all the emotions she was feeling.

Luke was supposed to die killing Mitch Williams a month later.... then their plans changed due to an executive decision regarding the actor that played Roy DeLuca and their desire for him in a night time role.... then they scrambled like crazy to change things when they saw the crazy chemistry Ms. Francis and Mr. Geary had.
Luke - "Laura go home. Laura go home....a few minutes later, "get out of here" "you're incredible, I really think you should go home now"

Because she cared, she listened, she was sympathetic.She didn't care about the zip code he grew up in, or the fact that he didn't attend college.She had concern for him when he would mention his difficult childhood. She didn't call him names, or even think him inferior. Because she made him feel safe...because she wanted to understand, not judge (like he had been judged his whole life). Becuase he lost his mother at a young age and this is the closest he had gotten to unconditional love ..More?

People at the time must have been blown out by luke & laura dropping to the ground & her screaming " luke no !" I wish I was around then. They say right after fans were writing in by the box loads loving this couple. Was the plan to kill luke off originally bc the gh writers said they were stunned & knew they had to back track this. I just dont know why theyd do such a gamble bc as I understand their were fans already I guess gh did not realize the ground swell & the tsunami that came after.
watching again in 2020!! What I still cant understand lol, is why phone calls were being made by leslie and the other guy at 3 am like it's normal conversation time. Only when she wasn't home yet, I can get that.
Still can't look at the bit where he's taking her down to the ground and she's screaming,too disturbing - but it remains one of the best.most powerful scenes ever filmed on screen ( let's remember it's make believe) - everything came together perfectly - and they pulled it off in 1979 ? a weird time - Oscar worthy performances ,it stands up to the test of time - like a Davincii painting -this is beautiful artistry
How many rape victims want to continue their involvement with their rapist?She seemed to invent reasons to be with Luke.She always protected him even when he wanted her to report him.She had the same attraction for him as he had for her.She said at one point he needed her and nobody had that kind of need for her before.
Aah oh that was pure magic the words the looks the sweet hidden love between two people. Two people who need each other but don’t know it as yet. They are worlds apart. but together one. They loved and will love each other again sometime very soon. As far as I’am concern there Love will last a life time no matter what is written or said. Thank you Rosie.

I can tell you. I was 11 and very frightened by it - I remember I cried and called my cousin to tell her the awful thing that happened to Laura. A true testament to their artistry is that I did fall for the "love story" . Geary and Francis were / are that good - so compelling and gifted actors.
lucy rosevelt they were so good and the chemistry between them was so off the charts that they made us truly BELIEVE that they WERE Luke and Laura and that they WERE in love!
Don't think anyone who watched back then denied that it was rape... I just think some people think it was love beforehand.... which made Laura want to understand and help Luke instead of just accuse him... it was tough.. very emotionally and cognitively challenging... and there will be arguments till the end of time about it... but nobody could deny that it was incredibly entertaining.
Yes it was for Luke. I thing he was on the edge of an abyss he took another step into the dark...Once that step was taken there was NO turning back..... ever as a matter of fact deep in Luke’s heart it broke as soon as he came to his senses. During a TG and GF interview, they were asked about doing this scene together. GF said that preparing for this scene was harder on Tony than her. Before shooting this scene, he sent her flowers and wanted her to feel safe by reassuring her that she wasn't going to be touched inappropriately or manhandled in any way.
Someone mentioned that Genie was 17 in real life during these scenes. Tony looks at least 30. You can really see how big their age difference in these younger scenes....
She was 17 in real life and Tony was mid 30's!! But we didn't know that and didn't care. Tony said at first he felt like a dirty old man leading up to Night At The Disco. But he was soooo good at his job and Genie looked up to him from the first day he arrived. She wanted to impress him and not let him down. She said he was the first person to treat her like she mattered and as an adult behind the scenes. So they connected right away.
I thought he had a baby face. He was 14 years her senior.
Aahhh, here I am back again 2022. Luke's moves are so smooth and he can't help himself... Laura is too young to think what is about to happen is happening.... all she knows is she is attracted to him and she thought she could just sweet talk him. But it was his only chance..and he took it.
It's acting ,make believe ,it's not reality. But nothing takes away from the fact, that these 2 fine actors,with Tony Geary the leader and Genie Francis the responder,took the unreal and made it real ,together they executed this scene perfectly, one of the best scenes ever between an onscreen couple,beautiful ,perfect .and Tony Geary was so freaking sexy. This is art.

I was very lucky to get out of school and in front of the tv by 2:55pm. This rape did not come out of the blue.
I wasa in junior high at the time of this storyline and all I can remember is that all,of my friends just felt sorry for Luke. Wht he did was wrong but you couldn't hate him for it.
I guess calling people in the wee hours of the morning is a normal thing to do. I'd slam someone if they called me at 2:30 am just to shoot the breeze......really Leslie? Brian answers; Laura "I didn't wake you, did I?" no Laura he's always up at that hour...LOL LOL LOL.........I know it is in the writing, I wonder if they gave that part of the script any thought. Not like it's an issue lmbo, I watch this alot because I love it; it's just those parts that kill me laughing. Forever live L-n-L
There are some "real" people who have unfortunately been victim to rape who have serious issues with it. Just trying to be thoughtful.... letting them know I was thining of them. Glad you are not offended. I think it was some of the best television ever produced.... but that is obvious with the amount of time I spent uploading it here.
Yes. If you were there back then like I was, there was too much backlash. They had to turn it around.
there's no question rape is wrong, she said NO 9 times......and of course back then, many things concerning sex aren't portrayed nor talked about how they are today. However, I think the writers were more trying to push the idea of Luke's obsession with her, and not to hurt her or to made to look like a brutal act (though he did describe it to Bobbie at a later date as 'brutal"; I think he addressed it was wrong in every way, but he loved her so much so the views on it are a catch 22). Today the world would be up in arms over it, but it worked because of the love story behind it. Writing in the acts of forgiveness, trying to understand it (from Laura's view)....those things. I can only speak for myself but that was more how I looked at the writings; his uncontrollable love for her that went too far one night. On the flip side, no is no, so it will always be a controversial storyline as long as the story lives on. It was daytime history, and no couple could even come close to these two.
2 more things, at 6:13 look at the expression on Laura's face; like an innocent child, like another bad kid threw her toy on the floor....sorry; I love her face there.......
And she did make it clear several times that her and Scotty were in fact together. She never went around that.
+S DAVIS It was complicated... they go on numerous times in their later history having Laura say No to Luke when what she actually meant wasn't that clear cut.... It would be great if everything was so easy.. this storyline proved that life just isn't... not just black and white.. so many shades of gray.. and we all view things based on our own schemas. Our perspectives come from our own experiences ... there were enough people that were more intrigued than disgusted so... it worked.
+sussezq Absolutely!!!!! And THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH for posting all of these.....hard work & time.....so much appreciated!!! Regardless the story, it DID work and these two are forever! Although later in time, I myself believe they should not have brought it up again in such a dramatic way that made it look more horrendous now than it did then. That to me, was a huge no go.

This re-writing of history is nothing but confusion and I don't like confusion. Laura told Rick what happened and then she told Leslie that she went willingly away with Luke and it was not rape. That was the original storyline of Luke and Laura.
This was a bold move by daytime soap it could have back fired
When Gloria Monty decided to do this she called a big meeting with genies parents a few days before and said this will work out they will run us out of town on a rail. She took her chances and we got Luke n Laura
Hi sussezq....thank you for posting all these wonderful videos. I have really enjoyed watching the story of Luke & Laura as I have never seen these before. I watched up to 1983 playlists :) However I am going to stop watching now as it is sad to know that this wonderful relationship doesn't exist anymore. Thanks again.
Yes in the fall of 1979 Genie Francis was 17 not to be 18 until late May of the next year (though Laura tuned 18 that December) and Tony Geary was 32...have no idea how old Luke was supposed to be. They never talked about his age.
There is more of after the rape scenes that are shown on " Luke and Laura ~ After the Terrible Night, Part 1" I think there are 6 parts to it. It is not very clear visually of videos and audio, and it is very emotionally hard to watch.
Genie Francis does such a fantastic piece of acting in it that... well, you will have to check it out to appreciate her even more.

THE RESPECT THAT TONY GEARY AND GENIE FRANCIS HAVE FOR THEIR CRAFT,THEIR ART OF ACTING,IS AN EXAMPLE. THEIR I LOVE YOU SCENES ARE STUNNING ,( WITHOUT OBSCENITIES OR UNNECESSARY EXTREME NUDITY,THAT SOME OF TODAYS DIRECTORS RESORT TO, TO TRY TO MASK THE LACK OF GOOD ACTING ,DIRECTING AND CHEMISTRY ). that was really an important moment of L &L's history but it also makes it more special because they rose above it.I just don't understand why the writers in the 90s made it once again into a rape when the writers back than tried to play it as a seduction.

Yo are right about the issue of her saying , "No". Yet, I remember (I was 14/15) KNOWING that they wanted to be together, but she was scared n married to Scotty. I can't lie, I fell in love with Luke that day, just as much as every other woman in the Country.
Just when you thought everybody in a particular age group understood that Luke raped Laura, there's always one more person Who is shocked by the revelation. This time it's my husband. He never knew the backstory between Luke/Scotty. He was beyond furious. I kept explaing...it is a Soap opera. Repeat last sentence until understood.

Aah Laura was trying to help Luke she was afraid for him. Laura thought that Luke would hurt himself that is why she asked him to stop drinking she did not want him to make any harsh decisions. So she stayed to see if she could help him and try to keep him safe that was all and that is what you call friendship. Love. Rosie.
Yes, rape is horrible and ugly! But, I think some people have a hard time wrapping their head and heart around forgiveness. Forgiveness means different things to different people.

wow... I wonder how many women of my generation have a skewed idea of what real love is, because of this show. I was a rabid L&L fan, believe me... but wow. This would never fly today, rape that becomes love.
My Mom and I were glued to the screen the day this epi was shown. She had taken off work early so as not to miss it. It started a fire that to this day is still burning for LnL fans.

Luke had found out that he had to kill Mitch Williams for Frank Smith's crime organization.. to prove himself to them, which would put him all the way in.. never to get out. He knew if he did not go along with the hit, then his life would be in jeopardy and that the mob would probably go after his sister Bobbi and his aunt Ruby. He was drinking heavily.
I came in way after the David Hamilton thing, and I never thought I'd see all these great episodes! I think the statutory rape age law goes state by state? I could be totally wrong....but they should have called it seduction instead of rape.... at least that is the way it looked. Very well done.
General Hospital needs viewers big-time. Can you imagine if they were to announce Luke and Laura week. Boom!

I first started watching GH back in September of '79. I watched faithfully for 5 yrs until Luke and Laura left in 1984. What top notch actors GF and TG are, along with the rest of the cast. This was daytime TV at it's finest and what a shame what's going on today. Glad to hear GF will be back as of 02/11/2013.

This storyline was shocking. I remember thinking are they crazy?? What a gamble! And oh how it worked!

The phone calls were inserted to divert attention to the main rape scenes, which could not be shown on camera, obviously. They also added time to the event taking place off-screen... While Scott was chatting up Leslie, Laura was being raped. It's a classic soap writer's staple. Not hard to understand at all.
Rape can be off limits and wrong down to the core, then and now, but still have a rare chance of a couple making it. If Luke had continued abusing her, but she wanted to stay, of course course the show would have had an impossible problem. Rape should be spoken about. Soap operas are over-the-top. I think the overall topic of rape, was done a dis-service to women, by the women trying to help women. Should every morally reprehensible act in art be left out? Then burn the books. Fine if a person can't watch. I can't watch a lot of parts of shows. I'd personally need as few details in any film, as I saw in that rape seen.
I mean rape culture and the romanticizing of it(rapemance) goes way back. Hades and Persephone, one of the oldest examples of this, is still super popular and a "trope" with the tortured man and the innocent girl who brings him light and he brings out her darkness/ wild side. Twilight and Fifty shades made a fortune on the tropes. Luke and Laura's dynamic definitely falls in this trope esp early on. Its interesting and can be compelling as fantasy, but in reality is extremely problematic and misogynistic and all sides should be discussed. Shades of grey and all that.
My guess is that it was an attempt to heighten the drama even further.

sussezq, do you remember reading at the time, that Gloria was watching the rehearsal of this scene. Tony was told to grab Genie onto the dance floor. She ran downstairs to the set and said "no, no, no. Tony, put your hand out and beg her to dance with you."? Changed the whole conception of the scene.
Interesting... because most people around here think it is even better than they remember it as a kid. It's really choppy up to this point because lots missing... but I think I would have to utterly disagree with you as the story goes on.
By the way... Anthony looks lot like Robert Englund.

My hubby and I were stationed in Wildflecken, Germany and I remember watching GH in 79-80 albeit a day behind.
It was definitely rape. Luke has admitted that several times. They tried to make is "seduction" to make their love story more palatable but regardless of their beginning, people love them (me included) and they were the most memorable and popular couple in the late 70s 80s

Some of those scenes are posted on another channel.. the quality is lousy.. but at least you get the interaction at the hospital.. can't remember what you have to search for to find them...I'll try to figure it out and get back to you.
Sorry I do not have just Rick and Lesley... they were wonderful during this time too. The show wasn't just about L&L. All of the stories were great.

@babause15 The original storyline was great. Daring, complicated, and honest. I think the "seduction" rewrite later on was a bunch of irresponsible hogwash. I'm glad they revisited in the 90's and clarified that it was rape, from the very beginning.
