@@CasperP Well for something that bad...They've certainly been in business for a very, very long time and are still constantly busy. Believe you me, if it was as bad as you described it would not have last anywhere near as long as it has. It may not appeal to some people, but it's definitely found people who it does to, to keep it alive and thriving. You always gotta remember just because something doesn't seem good to you doesn't mean it doesn't seem delicious to the next guy. That's the beauty of restuarants, you get to pick what you want to eat, no one is forcing anyone to eat there. There's probably a TON of burger places within walking distance of that place, so just go to a different place where you can get whatever you want on it and done the way you want it, simple as that. If you opened up a restaurant, and you were doing good or even great business but for whatever reason a bunch of people complained about what you serve or how you choose to serve it, would you change it just to please people who probably don't even eat there and risk ruining the business you built up and disappointing or even losing the actual paying customers you get...? It just wouldn't make sense to, in any you think about it. It's like sometimes People don't realize the world does not revolve around them and them alone. They'd rather a place like their change their menu or even for it to close down, instead of ignoring it and leaving to the people who obviously do enjoy it, simply out nothing more than spite because it doesn't serve things they want and they way they want it... Just take a second to actually think about just ignorant, selfish and close-minded that kind of mentality really is.
I tried to go here last year, but they're open only part of the year, so I missed out. But if you want an interesting burger in Connecticut that you can't really find anywhere else, you should try Ted's steamed cheeseburgs or a Burnice burger at Shady Glen.

Definitely an early take on hamburgers, looks fun. If you ever feel like risking your life with a trip to Memphis, Dyer's cook their burgers in 100 year old grease that has been continuously recycled since opening day in 1912.
Moved to New Haven recently. While I’ve heard about this place and seen it on shows, I’m happy I’ve watched this. Historically significant or not, some things are better left in the past! Happy to just keep trying all the pizza joints, they DEFINITELY know what they’re doing Also, Wegmans mention? Fellow Rochesterian?
If you were served this sandwich at any other restaraunt in the country besides Louis Lunch....you would likely send it back and exit the establishment forthwith.
UA! I found you about a year ago when I had to stay with family in south Jersey after my apartment lost water. Your review of Gordon Ramsay pub placated my excitement that night, and I’ve been watching ever since! It is so great to see you grow!!
I've been there many times 20 years ago. It's fun for a quick lunch if you happen to be near by, but not a destination worth a drive. Pepe's or Sally's pizza are amazing.
As a viewer of yours I'd like to commend you for venturing out of your corner of the world. I get the impression that this is currently your side hustle so I know you need to balance traveling to do videos and your everyday life but there's a lot for everyone to explore next to them if they look. I enjoyed your video. I appreciate the honesty and the tempered criticism of this visit. Bourdain NEVER liked going to where dishes originated I think this was a mistake by him. I believe trying where a dish was conceptualized gives anyone who enjoys food and likes to cook a jump off point to see where the food went and where it could still go. Good job venturing out and giving your viewers more diverse content to peruse. Awesome job man keep it up!!!
The irony is that most likely, if any other restaurant had this on their menu where patrons could see it, they probably would sell few if any at all. It just looks like the most unappetizing “sandwich” that I have ever seen.
@@NoahEats I can certainly understand the nostalgia, but that has to be the only thing that keeps that place going. I mean how good can it really be, especially for $8. It reminds me of something that someone throws together at home when they have just about run out of everything to eat. Have a great Thanksgiving!
I used to work in New Haven and I brought more than a few people over to Louis (Looeys) because they just had to try it. One guy was going to take it back because it was raw until I pointed to their sign on the wall and the owners will not accommodate, if you don't like it, LEAVE and don't come back. Should also add NEVER ask for ketchup! For me, way too rare and under seasoned, I think a lot of people who rave about them probably never grilled their own burgers at home.
Is there a category for the next food blogger superstar that know nothing about food and chew like a goat? You might want to find how you feed your pride in another way. Bye.
Those ancient hamburger roasters exhibit the yellow gas-flame, an indication of dangerous carbon monoxide, and they are not vented to the outside. Efficient gas combustion would burn blue and generate enough heat to actually fully cook the burgers. You would think the owners might have figured out how to vent the burners to the outside since 1895.
Congrats on the 100th episode! Yes, it was recognized by the library of congress as the official "birthplace" of the hamburger sandwich but the sandwich was first officially (I once read something about it being created at the Erie County Fair in NY but that was heavily disputed) invented at the Seymour Fair by Charlie Nagreen in Wisconsin in 1885. Thanks for another great video. (I don't mind you mentioning the Cheesecake Factory - my son loves the place lol).
The original flame-broiled burger? It looks like the size of the patty could be thinner to lower the wait times (maybe sacrilege?), and increase the heat to get really good char-grill marks. Seasoning should be on point (which it sounds like it wasn't). Keep the simple menu and prices, just concentrate on a tasty consistently simple burger and just keep the line moving.
I've eaten at Louis' several times and it's an interesting place. The cheese is cheez whiz and the only condiments are tomato and raw onion. No fries, just chips. The burger is the star. I've asked for the burger to be a bit more done, to medium and if it's not crazy busy, they will do it.
I never ate there myself but I've seen videos of the place from the past. I could of swore I saw under the sign at one point "if you would like your burger well done please let us know when ordering" or something like that. I guess in order to keep things moving when busy they just cook all the burgers to the same doneness to keep them from slowing down.
I’ve been curious about this joint for a minute. And from all the reviews I’ve seen, it just seems like the burger you make at home when you don’t have a lot of ingredients other than the bare essentials. If I do ever find myself in the area, I will check it out. Another banger review, UA! Congrats on the hundo 👍💯
They used to make them “well done” years ago, but they ALWAYS gave me a hard time and it was always pretty pink in the middle. The fact they have that sign now makes me feel a little better that I can’t really go there anymore now that I live in KY… the few times they did cook it well, it was by far my favorite. I didn’t even need the ketchup that is not available
It's nostalgic ❤but obviously, not precise because the cheeseburger looked cooked medium compared to almost raw first one. Liked your honesty and video. Thank you. Btw I like thinner burgers but over flame is great. It was the experience ❤
I ate there about 50 years ago when I was looking for a job in New Haven. I stumbled upon Louis Lunch and ordered a cheeseburger. When I asked for ketchup, I was given the condescending line “we don’t allow ketchup in the lunchroom” which kind of sent me back on my heels. Anyway, I had the burger and because of that experience, I kind of didn’t want to like,it but to be honest, it was very good. I really enjoyed it. The lack of ketchup really brought out the flavor of the meat.
Personally, I prefer smashburger type of burgers that are thin patties and well seasoned through and through so I don’t know if I would like this type of burger.
As a Canadian, this is literally illigal in my country. I wouldn't eat this nuclear explosion of botulism. I only eat ground beef well done, period. The huge chunks on raw onions are a big turn off. Its all very half assed.
Rein's Deli is very good. The pastrami was perfect, not overloaded like Katz's. As for pickles, you will get 2 full half sour's on a plate... best pickles around.
To Me, It reminds Me of the first burger I ever made (personally if it's not smash style I prefer a medium rare burg). Imagine how much of a game changer this was during the time though. To look at the smash style burgers with brisket/chuck/sirloin blends with toasted potato buns & the sweet/acidic sauce styles to cut through the inherent richness that burgers naturally provide the palette, it really goes to showcases how much we have elevated the burger game. I wasn’t that impressed with this place. The meat wasn’t seasoned when I went, it was literally just steamed meat. It needed some salt & pepper big time. Growing up in a lower income home I often ate hamburgers on white bread but my mom at least seasoned the meat well.

Incredible burgers…they are wonderful…there is a reason they have been in business so long.
@PeterSokol-bl5vz there is no way an uncooked burger is any good. That's not a ribeye bro!
Watching other videos reviewing this place makes it pretty clear -- it is not good. But obviously they still have people flowing in consistently, to eat something which looks like something a kid would make after school while waiting for a ThunderCats episode circa 1987. Burger patty on white toast with cheez whiz.
They're all coked up or drunk.

That burger joint has historic attraction...just like outhouses do. I prefer plumbing.
3:13 literally serial no. 1 that’s crazy. I think I heard the owner one time say the original designer of the ovens wanted them back for R&D, Louis was like nahhh. Love it 😊
The absolute balls on these people to kick you out for asking for ketchup yet dousing their shitty sandwich burgers in cheese wiz is utterly ridiculous
Facts 💯!!! 😂😂😂😂 what the hell is wrong with them? I can’t have mayo or ketchup but you’ll throw that whack a$$ cheese wiz that definitely wasn’t made during 1890s. Heck, you need condiments to mask the raw a$$ meat!😂😂😂
@@CasperP Wouldn't it be one fact?
@@jacktorrance2633 nah, facts for both points about ketchup and the cheese wiz
Cry about it boo hoo
My dad took me there in the 80’s on our way from Boston to Fl. I was just a kid and remember it well. He told me it was the first burger ever invented

Moved to New Haven recently. While I’ve heard about this place and seen it on shows, I’m happy I’ve watched this. Historically significant or not, some things are better left in the past! Happy to just keep trying all the pizza joints, they DEFINITELY know what they’re doing
Also, Wegmans mention? Fellow Rochesterian?
If you were served this sandwich at any other restaraunt in the country besides Louis Lunch....you would likely send it back and exit the establishment forthwith.

The cheeseburger was invented in my hometown Louisville,Ky. at 80/20 Kaelin's on Newburg Rd. an still open
I've been there many times 20 years ago. It's fun for a quick lunch if you happen to be near by, but not a destination worth a drive. Pepe's or Sally's pizza are amazing.
Probably a video coming soon

Great videos keep it up man. Ive moved to new jersey around 2019 and I look forward to seeing more reviews in New Jersey.
The irony is that most likely, if any other restaurant had this on their menu where patrons could see it, they probably would sell few if any at all. It just looks like the most unappetizing “sandwich” that I have ever seen.
That place has deep roots and traditions that keep it from making changes
@@NoahEats
I can certainly understand the nostalgia, but that has to be the only thing that keeps that place going. I mean how good can it really be, especially for $8.
It reminds me of something that someone throws together at home when they have just about run out of everything to eat.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
This looks like something I would put together in college for lunch after a night of drinking.
The only food channel worth to watch. down to earth, authentic and really entertaining!
I pride myself in identifying future RUclips blockbuster superstars, and I hereby nominate UA Eats as my next pick.

3rd review, I watched 👀 and sure do enjoy your review 🎉
@billymarino4452 yeah if you look at the sign you can see they've now taped over that part
If you make it, there's a bomb pizza spot directly across the street from louis lunch called BAR
They used to make them “well done” years ago, but they ALWAYS gave me a hard time and it was always pretty pink in the middle. The fact they have that sign now makes me feel a little better that I can’t really go there anymore now that I live in KY… the few times they did cook it well, it was by far my favorite. I didn’t even need the ketchup that is not available
that patty could have walked away if it didn't have toast around it...

You could still see the marks where the jockey was hitting it!!! mob
Definitely crossing this place off my bucket list.
You are a good food critic! You really explain in great detail even a simple working class burger very well, lol.
I like the Historical side of this too! Thank you for picking this spot!
No. It would have been better with ketchup.
Yeah, I don't care who you are you aren't telling me I have to only have my food uncooked and how they think it should be.
Ketchup can be so overrated at times.
Personally, I prefer smashburger type of burgers that are thin patties and well seasoned through and through so I don’t know if I would like this type of burger.
Smash burgers are the absolute best way to cook a burger

It used to be a good place. Many say this and I agree.
Reins is shyte if you know quality food
It's fascinating to Me that in regards to any culinary techniques and recipes that exist, that if there is something to be improved upon, human beings will figure it out and inevitably improve it. in regards to food, it is absolutely the best time to be alive.
I wasn’t that impressed with this place. The meat wasn’t seasoned when I went, it was literally just steamed meat. It needed some salt & pepper big time. Growing up in a lower income home I often ate hamburgers on white bread but my mom at least seasoned the meat well.

Cheeburger, cheeburger. No Coke, Pepsi. No fries, chips. It's unironically the classic SNL Greek diner skit.
Its a simple delicious burger. Good texture for the patty. The bread is a vessel that lets the burger shine. No frills, just a good nostalgic burger. The atmosphere is cool too. Worth the trip.
