Is Modern Apizza Really America's BEST PIZZA? New Haven Pizza Review

- While New York City is well known for being a pizza mecca, many in the know say that it is actually New Haven, not NYC, that is the pizza capital of the world. The famous New Haven apizza, pronounced "ah-beets" is known for being cooked in coal-fired ovens and many would put the best pizza in New Haven up there with the best pizza in New York City and the best pizza in the world even!
While there are plenty of New Haven pizza shops to explore, such as Sally's Apizza, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, and New Haven's Bar pizza, in this video we went to Modern Apizza. It has almost as long a history as all the other places but Modern Apizza was rated the best pizza in the USA by Pizza Today magazine. An impressive feat considering just how many great pizza places there are in the hometown of Yale University!
Today we seek to answer many questions: Is Modern Apizza the best pizza in the USA? Is Modern Apizza a tourist trap? And is New Haven pizza better than New York pizza or at least on par with it? Check out this video to learn more!

Thanks for all your well wishes! After feeling unwell for about a week, today I am feeling like myself again. To clarify, it was not from the allergic reaction that day, which subsided that evening after medication
video could be titled "UA Eats clams with a shellfish allergy"
And then the next clip is him sick in his apartment lol
😂😂😂
Mrs UA must’ve had a blast taking care of UA while he recovered from the allergy 😂
Clams are normally considered as mollusks. They aren’t classified as shellfish. Weird he had a reaction.
Lol
It’s pronounced “abeetz” and it’s phenomenal
It's abeats not A-pizza
Thanks. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Excellent presentation! Between the Pizza and the Burgers at Louie’s , New Haven has the goods
It's usually shrimp, lobster and crab that causes allergic reactions - many people who are allergic to shellfish can tolerate clams AND oysters, scallops and mussels. But always consult with your doctor first! Great video as always! Hope you recover quickly from your illness.
I am allergic to scallops and conch, but love (and am NOT allergic to) shrimp, lobster, crab, clams, oysters, and mussels.
For sure. The test came up negative but the doctor told me it was still risky. It's my own fault for taking the chance. To clarify my illness was not the allergy and I am feeling better now!
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Health is so important. Thanks for a great video.@@uaeats
@@uaeatscan I give you my honest opinion on your video on modern apizza. ? You talk too much in your video. You talk too much Just eat the pizza and give us your review. Secondly, in all your food reviews, you say everything is great. You should be more critical in your reviews. If you say everything is great, people will not respect your opinion on things. Just giving you my honest opinion.
How bad was the allergy as they can be very serious? My aunt can't eat shrimp because her upper lip and eyelids really swell up. I used Louisiana Supreme hot sauce and during a phone conversation, felt bumps showing up on my neck and shoulders. I noticed that my speech was becoming impaired and when I looked in the mirror, my right upper lip and left upper eyelid ballooned in size. Then I felt my throat closing up and I popped a Benadryl I luckily found in a bathroom cabinet. It was late at night and I prayed to God to get me through the night with my breathing while I slept. I had to wear shades the next two days to hide my eyelid as it finally reduced. Then I ate a Chipotle Chicken Snack Wrap at McDonald's and the opposite reaction happened and mirrored on my face but not as severe. So I have to watch it with some red pepper varieties.
I too have a shellfish allergy. You're a much braver man than I for trying those clams ... aka shellfish of death. Happy you're okay.
The fact these people let you film inside the pizzas cooking is really cool. They sounded really nice and seem like they enjoy cooking the pies.
The people inside actually are very patient and kind, despite being so busy. The only time I went there, I ordered the “Italian Bomb.” No doubt it was one of the best pies I ever had in my life. Also, they cooked the pie light for us, so we could reheat it when we got back to NJ. I highly recommend you visit this restaurant.
Well done UA! Thank you for an excellent review. Keep up the great work! I hope you feel better soon. Looking forward to your next review.
Enjoy your videos. Especially appreciate your candor with your audience, even sharing that you are sick. Hope you get better soon.
Just to let ya know the line out the door is 100% is NOT from a recent review! This has been like this for decades! As a local I rate Pepes,Sally’s, Modern and Ernie’s all are New Haven style winners!
Your gripe about the line is understood but as a local this place has that side entrance “closet” for pick up only and it’s in and out and that’s how I get my pie! Great review I love the quality of the video on the slices and that you appreciated the “char” not burnt crust! 🍕✌🏻
I tried ordering by phone for an hour, busy.
@@leroyv8372 I’ve gotten around this by preordering earlier in the day for a later selected pick up time..
Honestly hope this channel blows up, I find your style of videos/reviews enjoyable
Modern, Sally's, Frank's. These are my go-to places when I feel like driving and when I don't mind waiting in line. I grew up on NYC pizza, and yes, it's different. It's neither better nor worse. Lots of different species of pizza in this country. Try 'em all! 🍕
Absolutely correct many different styles across the country! Just to add a few.... Chicago Deep Dish, Detroit pan, Columbus ,Ohio for thin crust edge to edge toppings, different oven styles. Even regions in Italy do it a little different. ..... As long as there are high quality ingredients and they are cooked right!
philly grandma! @@songasa9913
I'll be back for Sally's and Frank's! As well as Bar!
@@uaeats Add Zuppardi in West Haven to the mix. Most locals cite that one as their favorite. Also, try the Foxon Park White Birch soda. It takes like root beer and goes great with the pizza.
@@BradMarcus I live in central Connecticut and don't get to New Haven very often and I've only had Pepes pizza two times. I go to Clinton CT a lot and found a great pizza place called Grand Apizza which is great! It is owned by a relative of the person who owns Modern Apizza in New Haven. I love birch beer or root beer with pizza, but when my husband and I went to Grand Apizza, we had a bottle of iced cold Yuengling beer, served in a frosted mug and it was great!
Have been excited all week to watch this
I think what makes New Haven style pizza different from anywhere else and that I haven’t found duplicated is the texture of the crust. It isn’t about being thin and crispy. It’s the toothsome chewy texture to it. I worked in NYC for 22 years. Tried pizza from Coney Island to Manhattan to the Bronx. You can throw anything you want one a pizza but without our signature crust everything else just makes me grateful for being raised in this area. Even pizza in Italy didn’t do it for me.
Visiting NYC as a kid in the late 80s, the best Pizza I got to try was Patsy's in Harlem. Last time we were in NY 15 years ago visiting family, we tried Grimaldis (Patsy's Lanceri's nephew I believe), and it was not anything remotely close to how good Patsy's Harlem was pre-1991. My Dad grew up in Harlem in the 40's and 50's eating Patsy's. My Dad was not impressed with Grimaldi's. When some partner/owner came to our large dinner party table and asked how everything was, my Dad was a right ahole and told him about his History with Patsy's and how nothing can ever touch Patsy's. Guy made some excuses and then thanked us for coming.
Great review, UA! Hope you fell better soon.
Hope you’re feeling better soon. Thanks for the great review, now I must roll over and try to sleep hungry.
UA I would have to rank Modern in my top 3 easily! Great review! Hope you’re feeling better!
Absolutely no doubt what-so-ever they make amazing pizza in Connecticut, New Haven. I know this because I have eaten at a few pizza restaurants, including Pepe. But although the pizza there is awesome. I live in Florida, and I must give credit to Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza here on on Biscayne, Blvd in South Florida. Andiamo makes some amazing pizza and is my go-to pizza place when I am not in New Haven.
The server sounded so friendly. And how cool that they let you film the oven as well!
Everyone working there was so friendly. And the pizzamakers, I don't think they knew I was making a video. They were just being nice
Sally's. My ultimate #1. The best I've ever had.
Love this channel keep it up
Congratulations to Bill & Mary! Much love, Trix
Foxon Park is a must. They have great flavors.
Like Moxie. IYKYK 😊
Thier birch beer is the bomb....
Hope you feel better! Thanks for the review. Spot on! You are correct to point out that it all comes down to subjective preference. I do 1/2 pepperoni 1/2 sausage from modern but I go to Pepe’s for clam because they don’t put mozzarella on it. Just garlic, oil and grated pecorino. I do add bacon sometimes but no peppers. I go to Sally’s for their potato pie. To each it’s own. When I crave apizza, I call order all three places, drive do my round of pickups, eat a slice of each in my car and bring the rest home.
My Man, that's the way to do it. I have been there 3 times and gotten 1 from Sally's and 1 from Modern to go. I have had the clam pie from Modern as well. I will have to add pepe's next time.
Love the New Haven videos!!!
I love your video! Modern Apizza is great pizza! Drawback is the wait even if you order for pickup it’s still maybe 45 min on a Friday night but your not standing outdoors if it’s cold.
that's so cool that they invited you to film behind the scenes!
my friend who lived in New Haven and worked at Yale took me to Modern Apizza one time. we had the clam apizza and it was AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. i still remember how great it is
I moved back out to SE CT, and even though New Haven county is only about a 50 minute drive, I STILL miss the easy access to the pizza there. It's definitely the only pizza I CAN REMEMBER HOW IT TASTES to this day, and it's been years.
@@TheCJRhodes If you like Modern Apizza, you should try Grand Apizza in Clinton, CT. The owner of Grand is related to the owner of Modern and the pizza is great and the drive to Clinton is closer for you than New Haven. My husband and I went there about a month ago and it was one of the best, if not the best pizza's that we have ever had!
Hey UA! I just discovered your channel and love the honest reviews, I think it would be awesome if you came to Long Island and did a food tour in Suffolk our Nassau county. I haven’t really seen any RUclipsrs with an actual following do this, I think it would be great!
And I’d be glad to tell you about some of my spots!
That's bc LI pizza is 💩.
Agreed w/ you on BEST. Highly underrated - amazing slice.
That pepperoni pizza looks absolutely delicious! So jealous!
thank you dude i grew up in that city scene!
Just watching the 70s movie Saturday Night Fever and Lenny's Pizza in Brooklyn is featured in the opening. Apparently the restaurant permanently closed earlier this year.
RIP Lenny's Pizza.
he's goes blind when food is good..
Great review ua, congrats on the clam revelation, I would hope they are using real parm there, it would shock me if they didn’t
Hope you get well soon! My wife loves Modern Apizza and I’m a huge fan of the Foxon Park birch beer!
Feeling better now. You two have great taste!
I’m from New Haven and lived across the street from modern for like 10 years. I always loved their bacon pizza! Brings me back 😊
Hi UA….Great stream…..Feel Better 🙏🏼
Yum sorry you got sick but the cheese looked the best feel better soon ❤
Saw the note that you had a reaction lol. Damn. Worth it though
Me, having never been to Connecticut or ever having apizza but living vicariously through RUclips: It's pronounced a-beetz!!! What a rookie!
For whatever its worth its really awesome for them to allow you to goto the back and film! Also Apizza always so good
Thanks for the video. A friend of mine used to be a Yale professor and he invited me to come there and play the Yale Golf Course with him. i never got the chance to take him up on his offer, but it wasn't until years later that I found that New Haven is famous for their pizza, so I really wished I had.
I grew up having allergic reactions to shrimp. But I also grew up eating clams no problem. I used to think I was just allergic to crustaceans. Thought that way for 30 years until about 4 months ago when I went to an allergist and they said 'nope'...just allergic to shrimp.
Had my first lobster tail after that and then crab legs and never got sick. They did prescribe me an epi pen just in case there's cross contamination.
I like a generous amount of sauce on my pie. Many places that today seem to skimp. Here is a pie to try next. Don't know what they call it other places but here in Philly it's called Pizazz
No sauce
American and Mozzarella cheese
Tomato Slices
Banana or Cherry pepper slices
Another great vid Ua thanks for the content!!!!!
And next on UA Eats we are reviewing....epi pens!
I am so glad you survived the clam pizza just to get sick again.
I hope you get better soon! The pizzas did look great though and makes me want to go back to New Haven.
Feeling better now. Thanks! Yes the pizza was fantastic, especially the pepperoni
Great looking pizza. Get well soon!
Another fun video, UA! Just wondering if you've tried Emmy Squared pizza, Detroit style? I've had the Colony pizza, with Pepperoni and Jalapeno peppers, with a drizzle of honey at the end, in Westport, CT. I know Emmy Squared is all around the area. The pizza has a nice crisp cheesy crust all around the edges and the blending of sweetness and heat work great together! It's thicker than NY style but thinner than Chicago style. Anyhow, hope to hear your review someday! (And hope you're feeling better soon!)
Yes I have! I love that place. Their burger especially is very good.
get better we love your reviews for sure!
Yumm... looks delicious!
UA, I wish I had known that you were gonna go here! I am originally from New Haven, and Modern is excellent. However, the first place I would have recommended, is Grand Apizza, one of New Haven’s best - kept secrets. They are excellent, and that was our primary pizza go - to growing up on the east side. Also, the best flavor of Foxon Park to have with pizza IMHO, is Birch Beer.
Summer of 2021 did the tour of New Haven Pizza's, in our rating Frank Pepe's was first, Sally's a very close second and Modern was a distant third.
Cowabunga!
The OPPOSITE of TMNT pizza, which I just had
Apizza looks SO GOOD
Super jelly!
My mom has a shellfish allergy as well and I remember she could only eat shrimp and clams, everything else was a no. Interesting!
Lived in CT my whole life, we are spoiled by the amount of excellent pizzarias here. My personal favorite spot is Ernies.
Like most Pizza places they went cheap on cheese and pepperoni. The crust looks good which appears thin not thick.
I would have to ask for extra cheese and extra pepperoni.
The clam pie is outrageous, if you like that type. Modern and Sally's are just as good as the top places in NY. A few weeks ago driving home (to LI from upstate) I convinced my wife to make a detour 30 min out of the way so we could pick up a pie from each.....not the first time that I have done that
Lmao… as good as New York?
Pepe’s clam pizza has been rated and is the best PIZZA in the United States…
@@FireBladeRR-RSP and in many ratings it isnt, I like a calm pie, many dont.
I put John's of Bleeker, Difara and Lucali up with any in the country.
@@iec7587 I like New Yorks top ones also..
Great vid! As a Havenite, its pronounced locally as Foxon Park (Foxin' Park). Modern is my fav but hopefully you made it to Bar for a mashed potato pizza 🍕!
Bar is behind Sally’s, Modern, and Pepe’s to me. About the same as Zuppardi’s in quality. It has by far the most fun environment, tho, and it usually doesn’t have much wait
Thumbs up for getting the pronunciation right at the end.
I think frank pepe is best in New haven. The location in mohegan sun is great also. In ny, johns sausage pie hands down. Keep it up!!
Wow awesome pizza 😊. Danish pizza makers has something to learn 🇩🇰🙂
Highly recommend Delucias as Its currently Dave's highest rated place for pizza! Gave it a 9.4!
Driving home to LI from NJ on 95, I made a detour and got the eye roll from my wife. It was excellent
Plays is trash
“I don’t really eat clam pies very often” 🤔
Feel better, UA!❤
Love Modern, I was there today. Not as good as Zuppardi’s in West Haven. Their sausage and mushroom is amazing! Oh and it’s called Ah-beetz.. not A pizza, and it’s not mozzarella it’s Mootz in NH . Lol
Nice to see when someone understands what "char" actually is. You've no idea how many new Yorkers I've met that just generalize and call new haven pizza "burnt".
Between Sally's, Frank Pepe's, and Modern; Modern is my go-to
Yes, burnt and char is not the same thing!
Burnt is bitter, char is not. But I hope everyone will keep in mind that not everyone likes that style even though it has been so well hyped...
@@DRV-mt5dd That's wrong. Char has some bitterness too, but it's a matter of degree. The bitterness in char is at an acceptable level, while burnt is not.
There is no best pizza place, it is all about what you like. I have a place near me called FireHouse Pizza & Pub, and in my opinion they have the best pizza I have ever had. It's an all meat pizza, with fairly think crust, not super thin, just a little thin. And to me it is the best pizza I have had in my life.
So I told a few people in my pool league about it, and they said they had one, and they did not think it was that great. That tells me that pizza is just what your taste is, because they said they were not that impressed with it, they said it was ok, but not great. But to me it was the best pizza I have ever had, and to this day I still think that. I get them to go all the time and eat some of it, then I freeze some of it and re-heat it in my air fryer at a later time.
Moderne is the best pizza i have ever had. But i had it about eight years ago, when you could walk right in. Not sure if would wait outside for an hour. I might go to Sallys to get a pizza to eat while i wait in line 😊
And thank you for correcting the pronunciation
Yeah, and L’indistre. Or whatever it’s called is probably top 3 for sure
Modern Apizza is my favorite of the 3 places to go to in New Haven for pizza. Sally's has the best tomato pie. Frank Pepe's has the best clam pie and Modern Apizza has the best cheese pie. The Italian Bomb at Modern Apizza is a great pie to order there if you want more than just cheese.
I went to Pepe’s and was not impressed. I enjoyed the clam pie, I liked the tomato pie, and then we had what you would would call a plain pie in NY (mozzarella slice in Modern).
The plain pie at Pepe’s, I could find 1,000 pizzerias in NY that have better plain pies. And that’s what I judge pizza on, a plain slice.
That’s what’s great about pizza, it’s all personal as far as what you like. But I didn’t find Pepe’s to be better than most NY pizzerias. I found it overrated.
Never been there but I’ve heard New Haven was on a next level pizza wise or “a pizza”
Top 3 pizzas in the USA in my opinion: 1) Angelo’s in Philadelphia, 2) tie between Sally’s and Modern Apizza in New Haven, and 3) John’s of Bleecker St in NYC.
2ND best pizza I have ever had, but Johnny's in Mt. Vernon NY will always be #1
sucks you waited so long, when i went i had no wait
LOL being from CT - gotta chuckle at the mispronunciations - but good review all the same - Modern is the Best of the best
You have to try Johnny's Pizzeria in Mt.Vernon, NY-super thin crust and great topping, It's on a par with New Haven
Buddy's in Detroit the original Detroit style pizza is the best in the states hope you can give it a try on a video you won't be disappointed
Looks proper
Great video, if you’re ever back in the area Zupartes is a must try and in my opinion Better than modern, & Pepe’s, and different but in my opinion better than Sally’s.
If you like the San Marzano tomato sauce you can get the tomato pie or tell them that you want the upside-down pie with the cheese on the bottom and the tomato sauce on top.
if you are able to get it, try czech Kofola. its also cola drink, but slightly herbal and Liquorice, little less sweet than your cola, i think you will enjoy it.
Okay , since we're ranking , I have to say the best pizza 🍕 in America is Tuckys in Lindon New Jersey 😮 . I also have had the best pizzas in alot of states for my travels . Thanks 😊 bro !
Modern is my favorite. I ride the canal bike trail from Cheshire have pizza then ride back perfect day.
New Haven is definitely a pizza haven 🍕. Had the clams casino pie at Modern. Definitely epic.
Definitely will be ordering that the next time we go
Aw i hope you're better now ❤
Sally’s along with John’s and Papa’s in R’ville. My top 3🍕.
It's pronounced "AHH-beets", not "Apizza" like it looks.
That pizza sure did look good.
My daughter goes to Yale, lives right near Modern…have to go with a few people and get a few different pies to share. They’re small and very shareable…
Wow she's lucky that she gets to eat there whenever she wants!
Deninos on Staten Island (aware they have one in the village now too) both good, partial to the original location.
Deciding ona full clam pizza and splitting the pepperoni and cheese was the most Asian way to order
Where do you rank Difara's pizza from brooklyn?
I grew up on New Haven pizza & Foxon park bevs. Modern’s my all time favorite. Patsy’s (nyc), Joe’s (nyc), Angelo’s (philly) & Angelo’s (nyc) round out my top 5
Clams will get you, even when shrimp, lobster, scallops, mussels, softshell crab. I am NOT allergic to any of it, but damn I i haven't been exposed to people (many!) that are and glad you are ok!
When he said “Cowabunga”, I felt that
Excellent, I need some UA action
As a CT native Modern pizza is 100% in top 3 all time. No debate
they are great people there as well!
Did you also try Sally’s and Pepe’s pizza while in New Haven? Would be interested in how you rank them compared to Modern. 🍕
Sally's was one of the best, along with Pepes, not any more. They are not consistent!
I tried Sally’s and Pepe’s. In the end I preferred Modern which totally surprised me. Didn’t expect that
