Closing in on the Shutter Planks - Episode 164 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- The gaps in Arabella's planking are getting much smaller... and soon they will be no more. We are pushing hard to close up the hull with Carolyn's help before she moves on.
The shutter planks are a pretty exciting part of the build. There are only two of them, and they need to be perfect as they will have to be a driven in to fit on the first try. In a way, this means there are tighter tolerances than we've had to deal with for previously installed planks. No straps for edge setting, and not a lot of room for error.
Simultaneously, we're doing small, but mightily important, tasks to set ourselves up for the next big things-most notably, the main mast build and the lamination of the cabin house sides.
The coming weeks are going to be pretty exciting as we close up the planking and put the finishes on the mizzen mast! Thank you for watching!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

In two hundred years when Arabella is taken apart everyone will be amazed at the craftsmanship of her build.
I wonder what would help the longevity of that boat I often think of different remedies that would preserve the wood longer like just soaking the whole bilge in linseed oil for a couple of days and then just letting it all dry up or well I guess they take precautions while they build it I noticed on the other bill that's going on in the northwest that I've been watching they use some orange cook behind and between joints that must have some value as far as longevity goes
Alex you have done a beautiful job on the missen mast
When Carolyn put the pencil into her hair I instantly thought of the seen in Ferris Bueller. Loving the content.
The gentle, methodical clicking of the ratchet in your hand drill gives me unashamed joy every time I hear it.
Carolyn is an incredible asset. hope you can keep her on.
100%, She´s great. I love her tatoo. It looks incredible.
A bucket of talent. For sure.
I'm just 3:49 in. Seeing Steve roughly cutting wide and thick dried oak boards.
Can you imagine the costs of such boards at retail prices now !?? 😱 Oh my god !!
I'm surprised there aren't stick ups at lumber yards
What? The video is OVER already? You always leave me wanting more. EXCELLENT editing, by the way. Can’t wait for the next episode.. stay safe guys (and gal).
Such wonderful craftsmanship as always. Carolyn is a good addition to the crew. Her personality and professionalism blends perfectly.
Cheers, Bart! We're so thankful for Carolyn.
@@AcornToArabella me too
She’s on top of her game for sure.
It gets said all the time, but it's so true: This is the fastest 22 minutes of the week!
Press play on this channel and the laws of physics cease to exist. Pro tip: Watch them while in line at the DMV. ;)
The saddest/ happiest day for me was catching up. Started last year from the lead pour as a pandemic binge. Yes, I did go back to the beginning after I caught up.
Brushing that oak made me sneeze 😂
Wonderful work Peter nice to see her coming together so well keep it going bro
This is the greatest show! I haven't been had this much excitement-filled anticipation for new episodes since M*A*S*H.
LOL! I know; right?
Every Friday, I'm sitting on the edge of my chair.
Shucks, thanks y'all.
I hope this is taken as the compliment it is meant to be, but you have your own alternate universe version of Pete in your team. "Hey Carolyn, what are you doing!?"
Got a good laugh at your comment as it unexpectedly reflected my thoughts while watching Carolyn measure.
When Carolyn explains stuff it's great ASMR for some reason. Relaxing.
@J Hemphill WHat ever it is it makes me zone out and chill out :D theres another video of her explaining things that does the same effect.
You Rock Carolyn!
When Carolyn asked Steve for the hammer, I half hoped she was going to put it her hair.
2:40 in and I started involuntary coughing as you swept the sawdust into my face 😂😂😂. Love these vids!
Another wonderful video.
Man those are some big planks.
9.30pm in Australia and getting comfy in bed, what pops up? Your blogs are getting more exciting, such progress, big thumbs to you all.
Carolyn is a great addition to the team! Great explanation of measurements for the rebate.
Thanks JB! Happy Friday.
Great work folks. Damn that mast looks amazing. It would be a crime to cover it up.
That industrial thickness planar is just beautiful!
I was just thinking that myself and as a matter of fact I live part-time and a place upstate New York where there was an old lumber mill that's now defunct but in an old shed or a couple pieces of machinery one of one of which I think is a thickness planer the other I think is a molding cutter and as much as I'd love to abscond with these items they only weigh probably four tons of piece
Dang, now I can't stop sneezing
My Grandma had long braids wound up in a bun, held in place with 5" hairpins, which in those days were also self defence tools if ever needed they were right there. I was lucky to be in that family. Sweet Lord of Mercy.
Finally figured out who Carolyn's voice reminds me of: Téa Leoni. She's a great addition to the crew! Great job team Arabella!
We're grateful for Carolyn!
Kind of reminds me of Pete from Tally Ho. That’s a compliment
Carolyn is awesome 😄
INDEED!
6:43 I hadn't seen that clamping set-up for the end rabbet before. Nice!
thanks for the upload
I love the sound of the songbirds in the back while they work :)
Jaw dropped a bit when I saw the mizen mast. Your dedication and commitment to this project is incredible. Thanks for sharing what you're doing with the rest of us.
It is a joy to see how "Competent Caroline" is re-enforcing the building team. 2 plus 1 equals 4!
I remember when you were selecting trees. Such changes! It never gets old. A hearty "well done" to all of the crew on both sides of the camera.
I just wanted to say that i stumbled upon this project because I was very into metalworking and RUclips told me that some crazy dudes were pouring a 4.5 ton block of lead in their backyard. Now three years later I'm more into woodworking and that one single bone that stood in a very empty boathouse is coming together and looks like an actual boat.
Thanks for the journey so far and please keep on going with that fantastic attitude of yours!
Cheers!
Seems, Carolyn should soon be expecting a shipwrights job offering, from the town of Port Townsend, Wash.. : )
Wow, whiskey plank coming very soon! Caroline, wish I got to know you 40 years ago beating around the slipways and sheds up and down the rivers! You have the knowledge, your explanation in measuring the final plank was spot on, right down to the final slice at the rabbit being a set length! Good luck girl, you will go far and have the grunt to do it!
We’re not all so different. People comment here from all over the globe. We all have one thing in common, despite cultural differences. We all love Arabella
Whiskey Plank HYPE!
I am amazed to see how the oak planks spread as soon as they are sawn in half.
Well seasoned, its relaxing and forming its own curve. Best to try to use the timber in as close to the curve it wants be when picking and shaping planks. Easier to get the plank to play ball to the shape you want and maximum strength and agility in the finished hull. Seasoning is the key!
Thanks as always for the regular tutorials in your videos on techniques, strategies and tools for building a wooden boat.
Glad your enjoying that aspect of our videos, Joseph! Thanks for watching.
The week waiting for this always feels a lot longer :)
Looking great
So much sawdust and thicknesser chips! SO MUCH. I feel like there's more weight in shavings than wood in the boat. XD
Seems that way, doesn't it?! And we haven't even faired it yet, removing even more material.
Japanese saws are fantastic
Thank you for sharing guys
Hi Guy's , great episode Thanks,
Looking good guys.
Listen to Carolyn calling the measurements at the end. Anyone else catch her having some boat builders number fun?
Loving the progress.
Always a joy.
I always look forward to the weeks episode. Keep it up.
Nice way to start the day!
7am here. This is the most restful video .... great subject matter and editing and music and voice over plus stunning materials being worked properly. Thanks guys and gals.
Thanks for watching, Len!
It's a pleasure to watch you guys work.. 😁
following you from Australia, love your work!!
Always enjoy watching you layout planks or whatever is the part of the episode. The fact that so much of the material is from your property is astounding! Truly look forward to each new episode. All of you demonstrate the beauty of the shipwright craft!
I will Concur with Bart Jonson. Carolyn is smart and talented. As a father of daughters never, never under estimate the females. She is brilliant and knows her stuff. She doesn't shy away from some work. And has beautiful blue eyes and a smile.. (sorry did not mean to diminish her at all but she's very capable and has nice eyes)
Love the rickety old trailer
Another excellent video. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for posting and sharing. Varnish is looking great on the mizzenmast.
Just think how much more you could sell that wood for nowadays! Could have made a killer profit to pay for some upgrades to Arabella haha ;) Too bad you don't have any extra. As always loved the video. I really admire your determination and motivation.
Really! Wood prices have gone insane.
Excellent segment Ben.
And when the stresses of life wake me up at 3am, this new post and the excellent choice of music make a difference. See how you guys make a difference... thank you.
That means a great deal, John. Thanks for watching, and glad you find these videos a balm for tough times.
I could watch you guy's for hours, Carolyn works well as one of the build crew. Thanks for doing a fine
job with the video during this adventure. All the best from Rhode Island.
10 minutes before lunch; right on time....cheers...rr Normandy, Fra.
Thanks for having lunch with us, Richard! :)
You are all awesome. Peace
Shucks Geoff. Happy Friday, thanks for watching.
getting closer to a complete hull, great work all
Bonne vidéo !! et gros travail ...Bravo
Congratulations on the progress!! Always nice to watch your new videos. Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
That opening shot blew me away how small the shed looked
Woo hoo! Happy Arabella day everyone!
Watching you around that monster planner with your strings from your hoodie scared me. With that old rig and moving belts you could get caught and not have enough time to stop the machine. Little more careful please. Absolutely love your videos.
It's a good point. It's moments like that when you're going along in your day and just pick up the next tool that things can go wrong. Thanks for the kind words, Craig, and thanks for watching!
Ditto
Me too.
Me also! Safety conscious lot of us!
It's amazing how the boat has taken shape in the last few months Steve and Alix as well as many others have worked very hard to bring it to this point, congrats!! Thanks Mark Dutka
Happy Friday, Mark! Thanks so much for being on the journey with us.
When the topic turns to masts, I hear Alix's voice and laughter, even if he says spar-making is going on hold...
You guys really make a great team.
cool last scene
Perfectly timed for my Friday lunchtime in Bedfordshire
Yup, ditto for tea time in Cornwall ⛵️
Nice video 👍
Love that brace🙂👍
Good to see you guys work together, there is a little something special there that make it funny. Good content, can’t wait to see her sail.
Thanks, P B! Happy Friday.
Always a pleasure, sorry when it ends.
Hope you do a "Whiskey Plank" wee drams for all. Glad Carolyn's part of the crew.
One of the many cool things about watching A2A videos is seeing the change of seasons. So much green in this episode. Not that I'd want to go back to living through northeast winters, but the green of summer looks cool.
It's a reward, for sure.
I looked up birdsmouth spars. Very cool! I will make popcorn.
The UK used to be one giant forest. We now have almost no old growth woodland left. After watching you build a small boat I can see why. We used all of our old oak woodland for ship building; it must've taken so many big oak trees to build a large ship. Thank you for the weekly content. You are an inspiration to me. I started out as a woodworker, but I am now a welder/fabricator and have been for 30 years. Wood is so unforgiving, when I remove too much material I can always break out the welding set, and I am back in business. Love you guys. :-)
Thanks for the kind words, Darren, and thanks for sharing your story. We’re so glad you’re watching. What do you fabricate, and who for?
@@AcornToArabella I work on big fabs in aluminium, steel and stainless steel. A lot of my work is used by Airbus to build and transport satellites. Although I also make products for many other companies, mainly 1 off products of varying complexity but usually weighing several tonnes.
Did anyone want to sneeze when Steve brushed that sawdust at the camera? Petey could take some lessons on how to explain things from Carolyn. Just kidding
Excellent comme toujours votre wonderwoman est excellente 😍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So happy to see the progress after years you are finally seeing the hard work come to fruition not just visualizing it. as a carpenter myself I can see past the work and visualize the end product great job love the channel! Can't wait for decking and interior
Thanks, Jordan! So glad you're watching.
Summer's coming up. Time for vacation. Maybe that other guy is gonna take a long one? And a big welcome to Caroline to the boatbuild. Professionals are always welcome. :-)
letsgooo boys amazing work🔥🔥🔥
I wish my circular saw played guitar music.
What keeps me, a landlubber, watching is the forest to artifact vertical integration of this project. Just fascinating.
Five o’clock in Western Norway. Sunny 24 degrees dinnertime .all well , a very interesting serie . Keep up the great work !
Takk!
hi guys the boat planks is going well and it is looking very good
Steve, Alex, it was good to see you guys on camera again, it seems like forever.
Love the plus and minus on the measurements Carolyn, just as we used do.
Looking great big milestone. Wish I could be there, Awesome!
Wish you could too, Bob! But this ain’t the whiskey plank and it’ll be a while until then. We need to leave the scaffolding on the starboard side for a while longer as we fit out the interior, build the cabin house, and plank the deck. So hopefully you’ll make it out for that whenever it is. 😉
Good morning Ben and the gang.
Mornin'! Happy Friday, Tom.
I thought we’d get to see it planked up!!
Doesn’t matter, still enjoying the work thanks for the update guys ⚓️👍
Yeah, it'll be a little while until whiskey plank, too. The staging is in the way and we still need it. Priorities!
Don’t worry I’ll keep watching.. I moved from the coast where I was about to join an association that restored old boats, not possible now but through you guys I’m learning a lot!! Thanks again!
I do the same thing for 16th inch measurements, I only go as low as 1/8 inch, and then call a plus or minus if its actually a 16th more or less. Nice to see someone else does the same thing.
Awesome
Excellent thanks guys, since RUclips took away the sub titles I just make up my own story to go with the images, this is going to be one hell,of a cabinet. J 🏴
:) We hope to get a third-party caption solution that works well with our editing process, John. We sure do wish RUclips would fix what was a very good tool for accessibility! Thanks so much for watching.
@@AcornToArabella Can't somebody sue those bastards for discriminating against hearing-impaired???? Seems ADA should be of some use here. Any lawyers out there that can advise?
@@AcornToArabella I'm watching on Sunday (05/30) night @ 12:45 and I have subtitles. Could they have fixed it already. Great video BTW. Last planks, last of the long stored lumber.
5:19 ;-s nice hoodie you are wearing Steve;-)
