    Keep it simple. No aquarium that fits in your house needs an overly complex filter system. You cannot replace experience with money.

    Wow. Test, test, test! Even if he committed the mistake, having a proper test kit to know what was happening as soon as the first fish died may have save some of the other fish.

    When I “upgraded” from my 125 to my 135, I used half of the tank water, and both of the established canister filters and put them on the 135. No messing around with the media inside or anything, just straight unplug, move over, plug back in. Not a single fish lost. Used a lot of the decor from the old tank too but I’m not sure how much beneficial bacteria that stuff carries

    Wow what a shame. Hate to hear stories like this. As you said it is so easy to just transfer seeded media from the old tank to the new tank. I’ve done it many times and it’s never failed me. He even could have just temporarily run that fx6 on the new tank until the sump was seeded. I also use Seachem or Fritz bacteria it help establish the new tank.

    Accidents surely happen in this hobby… cichlid charmer just lost a lot of Africans doing a routine water change. Suspects that he forgot de chlorinater … point being it’s easy to make a mistake even a veteran. I suspect the excitement of a new huge tank played into it all… thanks for sharing Ben…that’s how we all learn and thrive

    Just recently moved my 90 gallon (well water) from my ex wife’s house to my new house in the city. Couldn’t saved all the water but did save a lot of beneficial bacteria. A month later; tank and fish looking better then when they arrived.

    Ben,
    Wow this is sad. So sorry for his fish loss. I had this happen to me on my 98 gal it was a AF cichlid tank. I ended up doing to much to fast. Adding fish. And when I did big water changes I would also clean all the filtration at the same time. I ended up with a huge spike and all my fish died except one that I was able to save. I was so mad and upset and drained the tank and almost quit the hobby. I went back and did more research and that is when I found that like you said mess less. Now I do a water change I don’t mess with the filter media at the same time. Or I don’t do all of them if I have to clean them out. My CA cichlid tank has been up and running now. Appreciate the story. ❤🎉

    Great learning video. Moving active filter sponges from a sump or HOB is the easiest way to prevent this. Substrate is typically low in oxygen because it has little water/oxygen flow resulting in a lot less nitrifying bacteria. Flow of oxygenated water through any media is what promotes a healthy bacteria colony.

  • @jdssurf
    @jdssurf 7 месяцев назад

    Yeah that, and using tap water to clean your filter media is everyone's most common mistake. Oh and water change plus too much vacuum gravel, or cleaning filters at same time.

  • @XCaliKev

  • @FA-ft9sq
    @FA-ft9sq 7 месяцев назад

    Sometimes the substrate won't even be enough since the nitrogen eating bacteria / archea actually need decent flow of water. Your best bet are those sponges inside the filter that has been running for at least 6 months. A newer sponge is more likely to be wiped out with that kind of disruption so the older the better. (I've read some reports of people running thier mature sponges under chlorinated water with no ill effects.)

    If he would have known, he could have added prime and stability every day until that the tank showed signs of being cycled using a test kit. I also keep seachem ammonia alert on my tanks as a extra tool.

  • @ibbjamin
    @ibbjamin 7 месяцев назад +1

    TLDR
    There is not enough beneficial bacteria in the water column alone to setup an new tank. Filter media is needed to complete the cycle.

    In a freshly set 150gal community tank, the first batch of fish is 20 zebra danios. The following batches will be more or less same number of rasbora, tetra etc. But I am confused whether the batches ... surely gap of weeks between them ... will spike in bioload and subsequently in ammonia etc. Or, the volume of tank will act as a buffer giving adequate time to build up good bacteria. I just don't want to break the batch of same species.

  • @gregory7414
    @gregory7414 2 месяца назад

    Omg. This IS sad. But this is why we have Google and RUclips. Bacteria mostly does not live in the water column. Most folks should know this! He needed to properly cycle his new 350. Just moving the water definitely will end with massive fish death. Plus those BIG fish were producing a ton of ammonia. Shame!!

  • @petejeau
    @petejeau 7 месяцев назад +1

    Nitrifying bacteria can double about every 15 hours so even if the FX6 was handling a smaller bio load, adding that, and sonething like prime for the declorinator and to bind the ammonia in the first few days he could have been ok. That could have maintained the tank until the sump caught up at least.
    The KISS principle, possibly even Occams Razor principle. Not rocket science here. I do wonder though how a veteran fishkeeper coild not know this basic principle of aquariums. Is this not the first thing you learn in the hobby? Or should be maybe.

    Can I get your opinion on something Ben, I'm in the process of breaking down MY 20 gallon long and going to a 55 gallon., The twenty gallon long has a sponge filter with a powerhead on top and I have a Mesh bag of bio rings that have been in the tank since the beginning, if I bring that sponge filter Over to the 55 and I would like to set up a fluval 407 on it as well if I take that mesh bag of bio Rings and put it into the fluval 407 and also transfer the sand and plants and rocks over to the 55. Do you think I will be safe?

      I did something very similar when I moved my African Cichlids from the 210 to the 300 gallon. Be sure any new water is conditioned and throwing some bacteria-in-a-bottle, like FritzZyme 7, in there wouldn’t hurt.

    Hey ben, yeah that's a bummer this hobby does take a hugh learning curve sometimes. In my opinion having established seeded living bacteria is an absolute must have when Starting a new tank. I also for safe measure buy seeded bacteria from frirz like turbo start to add more bacteria to the existing media i have. This is where having twelve tanks pays off. I have all kinds of different types of media to use at any given time. .as a fish keeper I've given this advive to numerous new hobbiest. Another thing you must test the water numerous times early on to make sure things are safe and headed in the right direction.

    this "friend" of an aquarium builder who appears to have knowledge of fishkeeping, because he already had a large tank with large fish, and had obviously researched the sump he installed, it blows my mind that he wouldn't know about bacteria and media. I'm fairly new to this hobby, less than a year, and any reputable site I go on there are multiple videos on this subject. 😮. what scares me the most is that Joe from glass cages was oblivious to this knowledge and needed your help to figure this out. that doesn't say much for them. are you sure this is a real story. if so, this story is even sadder than originally intended. I have never felt the need to make a negative comment, but this story seems a little like sensationalism.

    Man, he had a 150 and a 75g 1st. Suprised those fish didn't die if he didn't know what he was doing. Then gets a 300g with a complex sump pump but doesn't understand the basic concept of what your saying? He should know better. Then you said he has 30 yrs in fish keeping? Oh man this guy really has no excuse. I can understand a tank randomly crashing because PH or something else happened that maybe someone wouldn't always be aware of but a 1st year beginner should be learning that you can't transfer tank water over thinking thats gonna work. Much less a 30 yr experienced person thinking and trying the same thing. Like what the heck.
