  • I come across a filter that combines the benefits of a powerhead, a sponge filter, an airstone all in one.
    The folks at Xpertmatic sent me a unit and so far I'm very impressed. In this video I unbox and install this filter. You'll see why I'm impressed.
    Want to pick one up? You can check it out at my Amazon store (along with many other items I use and recomment) at:
    www.amazon.com/shop/benochart
    Go directly to the Xpertmatic Filter here: amzn.to/32oqqn6
    NOTE: The folks at Xpertmatic tell me that the unit is now sold out, but it will become available again at the end of this month (July 2020). Here is a code that you can use for a 5% disccount:
    "05BOchartXM" The code will be effective from 07/20 to 8/20.

    Hi Ben! Sponge filter on seriods....I like the idea of this one - I am constantly buying and changing filters - I think I am obsessed - wonder why they made the baskets white?? I would think that black baskets would 'hide' the unit in the tank nicely - regards and thanks for the review

    Wow, I've been using my own homemade filters using this exact concept! I had bought the tetra whisper HOBsand removed the pump, connected a water bottle and filled it with filter floss. It worked perfectly. I should have patented it 😆

    Thanks for your review of this pump! I use an eheim pre-filter sponge that looks a lot like this setup, but attached to my other filters, and they really help. For this one, I would suggest to simply attach a valve to the air intake hose to eliminate the risk of siphoning.

    Pretty cool set up. Basically a sponge filter with a power head. My one complaint is they should make the plastic black. I don’t have a place to hide it like you so that would stick out against my black background.

    I have 1 in my goldfish tank, due to them making alot of waste! I did it a bit different I kept the coarse sponge on the bottom canister then I put carbon in the middle canister and the on the top I put bio-rings with a layer of filter floss so all in all I have, mechanical, biological and chemical filtration at a super low cost with the benefits of the air bubbles and surface movement! My personal view is that I like it and I don't have to worry that that my filter will not be big or strong enough!

    This basically a long narrow sponge filter connected to a power head. You could make your own that would filter more effectively > bigger sponges = more surface area = more beneficial bacteria < by connecting a couple of larger sponge filters to a power head. Better job and likely less cost as well.

    Ben I’ve been using those setups for years they do great for mechanical and surface agitation. However I have found 1 canister is enough. Over time they reduce flow when more than 1 canister. If you do not want micro bubbles leave the air line in the water....good luck

    I was looking for such a filter type for a long time. Eheim has a similar one, but not powerful enough.
    My 450 ... litres tank has 2 canister filters.
    Too noisy In the living room.
    One of them is going to be replaced by this Xpert, ordered today.
    The 2nd canister will also be replaced if this one is doing his job.
    Is it possible that two 30$ internal filters replace a pair of Eheim/Fluval costing 12 times more ?
    My aquarium is cycled and the beneficial bacterias are settled everywhere in the tank.
    So ... wait and see.

    However i didn't care much for the plastic outside of sponges..
    All in all you did an excellent job O'shart!!👍🏻👍🏻

The unit for have there is similar to one that I had years ago. I was able to run it with only 2 cartridges if I wanted to. Have a spare one in cupboard just in case back up filter/powerhead

    It’s similar to the Hidom internal filter. That one has yellow and blue sponges and you can buy the cylinder sections separately to extend on length. I found the pump was much too powerful for my 65g. I’ve now got a Juwel BioFlow internal filter now. It holds 3 large sponges, filter floss, Purigen and 3 trays of ceramic media. It runs off a 1000L/H pump. I’ve attached a 4’ spray bar to it.

      One of the things I like about the XpertMatic is that you don’t have to use all 3 sponge chambers. So if the turtle tank is only partially filled to provide an area outside of the water for the turtles, you can make the filter smaller to fit the reduced water area.

    Hello there
    I got my XpertMatic yesterday.
    Here are the 8 steps :
    1. Assembled it ...
    2. Put some filter media into it ...
    3. Unplugged "noisy" my Fluval 407 ...
    4. Installed the XpertMatic ...
    5. Plugged it in ...
    Wow ... (*)
    6. Unplugged it ...
    7. Uninstalled it ...
    8. Plugged the fluval back in ...
    (*) WHAT A NOISE !
    I thought my Fluval was a noisy one. But this XpertMatic is ten times louder. The bubbles can be cut off, but the pump is really noisy.
    It's surely a good filter ... in a fishroom, not in a living room.
    This one will be one more spare filter in case of problem on the main filtration.
    So I'm still looking for a noiseless filtration :-(
    Any idea welcome.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  4 года назад

      Mines very quiet. Be sure the middle pieces are exactly in place and the pump is fully submerged. If it’s still noisy I’d get it replaced.

    A regular sponge filter with a power head would be lower maintenance (squeeze and rinse) and provide more dirt holding and BB capacity. A simple foam sleeve on a Aquaclear HOB would add even more filter capacity. Might be novel for a new aquarist with a small tank. Small powerhead on an in-tank sponge filter would do a better job and cost a lot less. The charcoal feature btw will be exhausted after a short period of time.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  4 года назад

      This it’s accumulating detritus inside the plastic which means it will not dump so much waste as you remove it, like a sponge does. So far I’m very impressed. The carbon can be easily replaced once a month or the tube can be left empty, which is what I will be doing.

    • @HalfManHalfCichlid
      @HalfManHalfCichlid 4 года назад +1

      @@BenOchart when I vacuum the bottom of the tank I have learned to vacuum the surface of my in in-tank sponges. This extends the time between maintenance and when you remove them little detritus is discharged into the tank. My use of sponges is evolving but I am learning that simple is better, less expensive, and the name of the game is dirt holding capacity and BB surface area. A lot of aquarists like new "gizmos" and I have no doubt that beginners will buy this new filter and learn from it while it serves their basic needs

  • @gwdavidson065
    @gwdavidson065 4 года назад

    All of the water going into the filter will only goo into the top part of the filter , until that part starts to clog then the next section will start moving water through it, etc etc not a very good idea.

  • @jrnagri
    @jrnagri 4 года назад

    If you don’t like the bubbles take the air diffuser off...the plastic tube...you don’t need to use that, the air bubbles aren’t making any oxygen...its just for looks I guess. I’m sure you already know this but oxygen is generated from the gas exchange on the water surface through movement and agitation.
