I decided to get into fishkeeping to give me something to do to lift me out of my depression, honestly researching all the different fish you can get, learning about the cycle, seeing all the plants, learning about all the different personalities is part of the fun- I was fishless cycling my tank for roughly 2 months and getting it ready for my little betta and i bought him home on thursday... my first fish, and i've never been happier! Thank you so much for all the helpful tips and info your channel provided me! I couldnt have done it without you and Lisa, and my Betta Joot is a happy little camper because of it!

Yes I walked into Petco in the darkest January. They loved me. It was a very bright spot in a dark time. Hadn't had a tank in years. Oh well I'm at 2 and trying to figure where I could put a 3rd.

I have the same experience too! Fishkeeping has kept me happy and given me something to look forward to. It's not a permanent fix but it's very tedious and is honestly totally worth it for you and your fish buddy. I wish I could've known how to properly take care of my fish when I first got my betta but I'm on my 3rd tank and my betta Comet is super spoiled and happy.

It is amazing how many people get an aquarium just because they look cool, then when they find out it sometimes doesn't stay crystal clear , algae starts growing and that fish can actually get sick... the magic wears off and we lose another potential hobbyist!! A lot of times it's because they get no education when they first enter the hobby!! Especially when no one tells them that it takes a little bit of work and time to create a balanced Aquarium!!
My friend in Kentucky plays your videos in his LFS while people are visiting and how to find your videos to reference when they're setting up tanks 💪

Another #winning video -- love you guys a ton for great info + great products + service!!! Also...RE: mixing fish -- I have a wild imbellis betta male in a planted 10G. I tried adding him to a 20 long w/ a couple small apistos to give him more activity... I pulled him back out after about 2 hrs of them trying to kill each other. Some of my other bettas would do fine there, I think, but this wild guy? NO WAY!
So, seeing this, I might put the wild imbellis betta male in an endler tank to save huge $$$ on food -- for the betta and for the eaten endler fry I don't have to feed!
-- Yes, John, I know you don't like that idea because you're a big softy, but....we can still be friends, right? :)

I got my aquarium after I lost my ability to walk, so actually, I DID get it so that I had something to do, a reason to live. A sparkly box in the corner full of water on its own isn't going to bring me joy, but tending to the life IN it, making sure they're happy and comfortable and doing well? That does, and I knew that required work. - For me, it goes above and beyond being therapeutic.

The autofeeder thing is a fact, I had to live 5-8 days away and then rest 1-3 days and then go away again. I had 12 Big aquariums. Autofeeders, all differnt kind, even livebearers, learned the time. I mean some heard the noice and gatthered up, but most, like goldfish, Mbunas, Puffers etc. They learned the time. Super cool. I would not have guest that.

John & Lisa, I've watched so many of your videos and have an idea for a topic (if you didn't cover it already). You talk a lot about "if you don't want breeding, buy just males or females". How about doing a video of telling the difference between males & females of the most common fish (beginners) buy like plecos, guppies, angel fish and neons? Thanks for your "Fish Tanks For Dummies" approach to those of always learning! One thing I learned is no matter how long you have a tank or tanks, you are ALWAYS learning!!

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. In fact, I'm currently doing one of those things as I type.
Long story long - I was in a situation where I wanted to put an arowana in with my oscars. Issue #1, I'm too cheap to but a 12" aro, so I bought a pinky sized one and started growing her out. Shortly before she was big enough to be transferred in, one of my oscars jumped out of the tank and died. The other went into some kind of wierd depression. I gave him several months but he didn't come out of it until I rehomed him. Now the tank was empty, so I bought new oscars along with a couple other big cichlids. Issue #2,, I'm still too cheap to buy adults so all the new fish came home at an inch or two max. That meant the aro was now too big to be transferred over. Eventually I gave up on the idea and I've been upgrading her as she grows, from a 29, to a 55, to a 150H. I have an indoor pond she can go into next if I ever get it set up but I'm at the point now where maybe it would be better just to rehome her.
Hey John, wanna take a 22" aro home with you when you come out to Chicago's Aquashella?

A good maintenance will take you 2 or 3 hours, but when you see the end result, that sparkling water and those happy fishies, you realize it is well worth it.

LOL..happy father's day John! Yes Lisa the world is flat, where have you been.! Speaking of surprise fry, my electric blue acaras just did that to me. They are mr and mrs jones. they are in a 55g community tank with giant danios, long finned pleco, corys and 1 rainbow fish. it is a planted tank. they started on the left side of the tank, now they have moved the babies to the right side of them tank in the more planted areas with drift wood. There's no way for me to get them out unless I take everythng out. But so far they have been behaving well. they are good parents and not very aggressive at all! First time this ever happened to me.When I got them, didn't know they were male and female. Got them small. Then BAM! Babies, LOL...

My little Endler's, I'm worried they never eat enough! I put food in, and I hardly ever see them eat any. They may come check it out, but rarely do I see them actually eat any. But they are very active, have nice colors, and everything seems ok, so I can only guess that whatever they are getting off the plants must be satisfying them, and whatever else I try to add to that is not interesting enough to their taste buds to bother with. Of the two betta fish I had until earlier this year, one loved to eat everything and would have happily eaten herself to death, but the other was actually able to self-limit her eating, and like with the Endler's, I sometimes worried she wasn't eating enough.

My new glow light tetras got a fungal infection and 2 out of eight died. I am using aquarium salt and api life gard. I cleaned out the whole tank and am cycling it. The tetras are in the only place I can put them is a 1 gallon pitcher and they will be there for about a week and a half while I am cycling. I have a decent sized pothos in there tank. Am I doing everything right. I am doing all that I can do

@Bryden Vargas I used to have a Green Spotted Puffer for the longest time, almost 10 years. Then the heater broke. They shouldn't even count as fish. They're water puppies.
