    This is one of those videos I've always wanted but never wanted to ask for because it felt like it would be asking for your fish to be sick and for you to share their misery for our benefit. Treating an accidental illness and educating us as a result is probably the best possible situation for you to share this kind of information.

  • @aadentrn6475
    @aadentrn6475 6 лет назад +14

    Ick is very common in the fish keeping hobby and easily treated. Joey forgot to mention this but if you treat with any medication, remove any activated carbon in your filter.

    • @Izamar92
      @Izamar92 6 лет назад

      Aaden Trn Agreed he forgot to mention it, though it was probably because he's stated he doesn't use any carbon.

    • @mitchelll899
      @mitchelll899 6 лет назад

      Aaden Trn it's a stress induced parasite. Good news is in a giant tank it spreads slow. Bad news is once established it becomes like a flu plague of the Cascade effect on them. But like you said very easy to treat if done promptly at first signs by raising salinity slightly and keeping the lights on 24/7 to get them out of the cyst while dosing with a mild anti parasitic medicine.

    If all anybody sees is videos of how great fish keeping is, then they aren't ready for the many challenges. Thanks for sharing both the good and the bad, to give a realistic impression. I had my new fish 3 weeks before the ich appeared. I knew something was wrong on my birthday when three of my pregnant guppies dropped fry and another absorbed hers. The girls got thin and pale overnight. Spent the next day trying to figure out what was wrong with the water parameters when I spotted a couple white spots. I cross contaminated that community 10 gallon with my other betta tanks and the new 5 gallon that the male guppies were moved to. Used the same cleaning tools without taking the proper precautions, moved decor to another tank, my bad. So far, after the first treatment, the fry are still ok but the fish that came in sick was the one that absorbed her fry and may not make it. I noticed other signs of illness before the ich spots appeared. I'll tell you, my cleaning process will have some new protocols and I will always quarantine for a solid month from now on.

    Great video. I was wondering if you could talk about sick fish in another in more depth. Like how and when to know to treat with meds and how to know what is affecting your fish and how and what to do when you know there's something wrong but it's internal so you don't know what it is of what to do about it. As well as what causes our fish to get sick of get ich when it's a case of no new fish and water quality is good. This would help me so much . I haven't found any info on this topic and would love to know what to do in this situation. Thank u. And as always another awesome video from the king! Love you man. Can't wait for the next one.

    Joey, Thanks for the very useful video. You know what will be a good series? Educational videos of different type of fish sickness and how to treat them! I just lost 2 fishes from H.I.T.H. My Oscar pass away from age 13+, he was too old and his swim bladder was "damaged" or something. He pass away so I got a new Red Tiger Oscar baby, he was BEAUTIFUL. He was doing very good in the tank but it didn't notice he was sick AT ALL. He had some damage on the head, which I thought it was from fighting with other fish! But it never really got heal. The fish also has some damaged fin and some very very very small pin hole size dots on his body which I thought it was from fighting my baby red jewel(which is 3 times smaller than him). Then he had more holes on his body and he stopped eating after a short time. From doing not too bad to death only took 4 days. I did use some Melafix for the tank for "healing" the fish which I thought was damaged from fighting. Then after the Oscar die, I took him out and look very closely on the body, then I finally notice it was not damage from fighting, it was H.I.T.H. It is VERY hard to notice in such small size and the "holes" are really really really small.....and it got bad VERY quickly. After that I check the tank again, my pleco was also dead! He was in the same spot for over 20 hours? Then I finally check him..he was dead for A LONG TIME before the Oscar. I have no idea what killed him. He was 5 times bigger than other fishes in the tank and I notice he was hanging himself with his head toward the bottom of the tank and tail up facing the surface for few days near the top of the tank. I remember when pleco about to die, they do that. I didn't notice that right away again of cause. All my fishes lived for a long long time, stuffs like that just slip your mind. My pleco was over 8 years old and the cause of death is .....unknown. I actually NEVER find out how any of my Plecos die in the past, They all got very old. My Oscar, however....I only had him for 3-4 months.... After that I had to rethink the way look at my fishes, look extra hard for sign of sickness so I can treat them the right way and save their lifes!!!!

    This video was so helpful! Thanks for explaining every so throughly so we know why each step is important.
    I’m guilty of not quarantining in the past and lost my favorite fish because of it. Lesson learned. Have my quarantine tank set up now!
