  • Here's an email comment I receive on a regular basis, "My fish are dying but my water tests are perfect." That makes no sense, right? What exactly is going on here? Why are the fish dying off when the water is testing out perfect? Here are my 3 reasons why this can happen! 2 of them happened to me!
Has it happened to you? Have you had a die off that made no sense, where water tests told you that you water was perfect? Share your story and tips in the comments below. We all learn from each other at this channel!

Totally makes sense. I think I had a few of these problems when I first got into the hobby and didn't know what I was doing. But this is still a good reminder for us when we get comfortable thinking that we can just go in and mess with the whole tank. Thank you for the great advice.

Definitely a deep substrate guy myself. Actually remember learning that from you. It’s a sure fire way to really establish a proper seasoned tank. My 220 is about 5 inches thick. Let’s just say never have to worry cleaning my filters about crashing the cycle. Great tip there !!!

I do the same. At least 2 filters on every tank. Best way to always have a good amount of beneficial bacteria doing its job.

Awesome advice Ben. I don’t vacuum my substrates I have some bottom feeding fish like a syndotis and pictus catfish that eat up all the stuff that is left over. In my 55 gal it’s pretty well planted so the plants eat a lot of the stuff at the bottom. I use pristine to put bacteria in the substrate which also helps. My 90 gal has more of the catfish mentioned above and my red devil female digs and redoes the tank substrate so I never have to vacuum. I have an internal xpertmatic in it and that thing is a work horse. I keep it lower towards the substrate to suck up anything and the two tidal 110s take care of the water. My 20 long is planted and I don’t vacuum either. Great points you made earlier Ben.

Experienced these problems in my earlier days of fishkeeping. It wasn’t fun. Now one thing I experience sometimes is “species-only” die offs. I can’t keep serpae tetras alive for the life of me and every time I buy them, regardless of “perfect” water parameters, acclimation methods, where I get them from, etc., half of them die within the first week while every other fish in the tank is fine, even the notoriously sensitive roseline sharks (denison barbs)

That’s wild. I wonder if a local breeder is selling to shops and he has something about his water that is way different from you, or maybe the diet, something might be missing. A fruit or veg? I suggest you buy a batch and feed them something totally different and treat the water with a supplement like VitaChem and see what happens.

Well better late than never. Now I understand why I lost 13 fish, 9 of them peacocks, in 5 days. Only thing is on top of testing and maintenance and never got a high ammonia spike, unless it can spike and go down quickly ? That huge loss had me thinking about quitting. All the fish were added over a 6 day period. Thanks for this much needed info, by the time I figured it out, to late.

I have been keeping fish for about 4 years. I have become to use the slightly lazy method (less is more routine). I keep a check on the water parameters. With my stock I have learned the tank pretty well and the stock hasn't changed much in the last 2 1/2years. Water changes about once a month (about 50%).I do an extra water change every fourth month The canister filters on my bigger tanks I clean once about every 12 months. The HOBs on the smaller tanks about 6 months. On the 75g I have a FX6 and a power head. On the 37g I have a 307 and a power head. On my two 10g I have Fluval 50s and an aerator. All of my power heads and aerators are on timers. They are off at night and turn on and off throughout the day. I give the sand a stir during water changes. Other than that, I haven't vacuumed my substrate in quite a while. My bigger tanks are medium-ish to slightly heavy-ish stocked. The 10s are mainly jail tanks for when someone wants to cock an attitude, LOL. But my system has been working for me and my fish are healthy. That is part of what makes this hobby rewarding is when you find a system that work for you. Thanks Ben you are awesome.

All good points. I also will say that until you get your tank well seasoned like at least 1 year - 2 year, it would be ideal to put bottled bacteria, and stress guard in the tank after every water change.

@@tabarakaquatics8067 Absolutely. I use Seachem StressGuard and Safe when doing water changes. I put a shot of Stability after cleaning filters.

One of the hardest things to learn as a new fish keeper is how delicate new tanks are. Even if you’ve cycled it properly, adding a ton of fish can mess everything up because the bacteria can’t keep up with the sudden increase in bio load.
A mistake I don’t hear talked about often is over-medicating. With my first community tank, I added fish slowly like I was supposed to, but I got some guppies from petco and wanted to be sure they didn’t spread ick or something so I medicated the tank, but I had medicated the tank previously with my last batch of fish, and I think I added too much. Guppies did not last long. I’m 99.9% sure that’s why they died because they looked healthy when I got them. Good tips Ben, and nice shirt, I have the same one!

Another super important thing to remember is, Don't Lie!
If you're going to go to the trouble of seeking out help from other fish keepers, go that extra step and ACTUALLY test your water. Yeah, it might be a little embarrassing to have to admit that you haven't checked, don't know how to check, or have no intention of checking what your water parameters are. You're simply wasting everyone's time.
Test your water. Check the expiration date on the kit and test your water, then test it again. Then, test the source water.

Love this comment! Better be safe than sorry and if something changes in your tank, always always always test your water and keep tabs on it.

Another potential reason for the situation you described at the beginning of the video is, while doing a water change, not putting in water conditioner either by getting distracted by some thing else then forgetting or think you have already done it but you actually have not _and_ lowering the water temperature of the tank too quickly.
This happened to me this past weekend in my 2ft African cichlid 'grow out' tank' where the 11 fish, inch to inch and a half, started all hanging about at the bottom of the tank, not moving much - I then realized, AHHH! Water conditioner - so quickly did a 50% water change to try to dilute the chlorine/chloramine, put a double dose in for the size of the tank. I then checked the temperature and it was way lower than the usual 26 deg. C / 78.8 deg. F - was about 20 deg. C / 68 deg. F so my conclusion was the fish were stressed because of the chlorine/chloramine and the drop of about 5 deg. C / 10 deg. F of the tank!
All fish survived so I got lucky but the reminder / warning is there - do not get distracted too much while doing water changes; ensure water conditioner is put in before new water is introduced and check the new water coming in is near the normal temperature of the tank.

Just follow the science and you can't go far wrong...as long as you also think how your actions are affecting said science. Its not rocket science lol but it is science!

Many of my fish have died of Mycobacterial infection, diagnosed by tissue microscopic examination with special stains for that microorganism. All water parameters are fine. The vast majority show no external signs of disease. Just something to keep in mind. :(

My problem Ben, is my baby Convicts started dying when I took the parents out 🤷‍♂️. I checked all the water parameters and all is great. I’ve always taken the babies out with no problems. Could the babies just die off from loneliness?
