- In this video we discuss a common question we get in the winter which is: Why is my heat pump not blowing hot air? I often get calls from customers who think they need a service technician out because they feel cool air coming from their vents. We explain why just because the air feels cool, you may still be experiencing your heat pump working normally. Due to how heat pumps operate, sometimes the air feels cool however it is still warm enough to heat your house. We hope this helps you save money on a service call when you may not actually need one!

We had our first heat pump ever installed 3 weeks ago, and this video answered the questions and concerns I had. The air coming out of the vents didn't seem hot enough to me, and the unit seemed to be running excessively, but it seems that's just how they operate. I still don't like how it's operating, but at least now I know that's normal. I suppose I'll just have to get used to it.
It's 9 degree outside and I'm having the same symptoms. As a DIY guy I was a bit worried and started to do my own resaech to figure out what's going on with my heat pump. After this broken down details, I'm kind of worry free bcz its a normal thing for heat pump to perform weak ant not blowing enough heat.
Appreciate both of your time. Thanks for educating us
thank you, that really made sense to me as I only had my heat pump installed 2 days ago and I feel cold. Now explain it to my cat who lays on the air vent. LOL
I really appreciate this video. I just moved and am not familiar with the current houses system and this answered my question where I don't think there's anything wrong it's just cold outside.
Good video , good ‘hand’ explanation .
Changing the filter works for me. Drastic difference if filter is even a little dirty. Dirty filter results is ice cold air.
I was looking for this great explanation. Thanks for the video. Just subscribed the channel for more knowledge from
Thank you you have explained it perfectly 👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for your video discussion on heat pumps bowing cold air. I agree that the colder the outside temp, the less hat the heat pump will be able to produce. My heat pump system has a 24 KW backup heat strips package that has (4) - 6 KW units. With my Aux 1 setting - I am using 12 KW and with Aux 2 - all 24 KW are engaged. However, when running on Aux 1, I am just getting cool air and not "toasty" air out my registers. I do get warm air with Aux 2 - using the full 24KW. My question - my tech says that he is reading correct current draw for aux 1 but can these heat strips be shorted out or not functional and NOT produce any heat? By my calcs at 12KW I should be getting 41,000 BTU. Your thoughts?
You answered a lot sir thankyou!! Makes perfect sense!
Great information thanks. Sounds like the air the heat pump can produce is cooler when it’s really cold outside, right? How does the vent air temp change if you change your thermostat from 69 to 72? Does the air temp go up or does the pump just keep pushing 85 deg for longer.
The heat pump itself won't be able to raise its temperature above 85 degrees. However, it will more than likely engage aux heat, which are the electric strips meant to supplement the heat pump. That will in turn temporarily raise the temperature coming out of the registers to quickly get you up to 72 degs.
If you install a higher Kilowatt heat unit will it make it hotter when the heat is on?
Very informative. Thank you
Doesn’t the heat pump automatically switch on emergency heat? A few weeks ago when it was single digits in NC, I heard the heat pump still running and I didn’t see “emer heat” on the thermostat. Is it better to turn it on manually?
Same here I'm in NC also
I turn mine on auxiliary electric heat when the outside temperature is below 20° I don't want to overwork the heat pump.
Thank you
I live in a condo. We only have a heat pump in our individual units. No back up. How would I know if the heat pump is going out ?
It can get down to below zero where I live. I’ve lost half of my income and can’t afford to buy a new heat pump. There is no back up. I feel like I have to get a few space heaters. I’m scared.
So it's not functional in the winter...got it.
It's 11 degrees outside now and my heart pump seems to be losing the battle....
That s why u need supplemental electric heat
That's why on heat pumps have built in electric heat strips in the air handler like an electric furnace for auxiliary heat and emergency heat auxiliary heat is when the heat strips kick on while in defrost mode which it goes into air conditioning to heat up the coils to melt the frost off it helps offset the temperature also it will come on if it's down in the teens and single digits outside and the heat pump is not putting out as much heat like it would in the 30s and 40s. The emergency heat is those same heat strips as auxiliary heat except the heat pump will not run its the electric furnace itself that's running for when if your defrost board is messed up heat pump won't defrost or your compressor is messed up it's to get you buy until a technician looks at your unit running it on emergency heat mode all the time will give you a really high electric bill.
Very helpful, thank you!
I’m glad I have 2 woodstoves and a heating system.
Okay so when it is say 54° outside at night maybe 49 degrees the heat pumps running and almost every time it needs auxiliary backup is there ever replace the motor in the blower attic unit and the capacitor on the I've also replaced or repaired the thermostat wires from previous owner if you have advice please give it to me
Thank you for this great information. We had heat pump installed in September to an existing electric furnace. And as you have indicated the air coming from vents is not as warm as the air when we had just electric furnace. When adding a heat pump to existing furnace are the heating coils used as auxiliary heat in addition to heat strips that are added? We have an Ecobee Wi-Fi thermostat, if we want to switch from heat pump mode to auxilary or emergency heat mode to heat the house more quickly how is that done? Thanks for the help.
It needs to be done if its properly wired in the settings mode of the Ecobee for Supplemental Heat or Aux Heat if it s again wire correctly
It's currently 62 degrees outside and the air blowing out of my ducts is 71 degrees with the heat pump in heat mode. My thermostat is set for 66 degrees and the current indoor temperature is 66 degrees, the thermostat is set to 66 degrees b/c I'm avoiding use of the heat strip. The heat strip would engage if I were to set the thermostat to 67 degrees.
Is there some criteria I could check to see why the heat pump duct air isn't, say, 85 degrees? Maybe the temperature of the line set should be 200F instead of 110F? What would be a normal line set temp under similar circumstances (outdoor temp 66F degrees?)?
This is a very interesting question! Instead of writing an essay to answer you, we went ahead and made a video answer. It is scheduled to post here on our RUclips channel on Tuesday, but to see our answer now you can view it on instagram here: instagram.com/airofauthority/
I hope this helps. It is pretty difficult to answer these detailed questions without actually being there, but we'll do the best we can.
Mine on almost constantly. 75 deg supply air. 3 banks of coils. I did HVAC for 20 years. Zero heat pump experience. What pathetic performance. Put it in Emergency Heat, got warmer. Are my coils not working when it's in normal heat mode?
Hello, I have 2 new Rheem electric units (inside and out). I'm in San Antonio and we got down to 19 degrees with 6" of snow. Now I understand the unit will run all the time to keep my house at 70 degrees. However, the temp inside got down to 56 degrees! I even tried to put it on emergency heat and it still stayed the same after 3 hours. One unit is a 4 ton and the upstairs unit is a 3 ton. Every time I call they say there is not enough heat outside. I called a friend that has a similar size house and a heat pump unit and he is at 71 degrees.....what can be causing this??? Am I being fed a line of BS? Oh and the upstairs unit only gets to 64 degrees.
Hi David. I apologize for the late reply, but since this was such a great question that needed some detail in answering we included it in this week's video: ruclips.net/video/KxBvSZ0ebOs/видео.html. Your question is at the 4:04 mark. I'm sure you are out of the cold weather now, but I hope this will help you or someone else in the future. Thanks again for the question!
Maybe your house is not as tight as it should, so you have to much fresh air coming in. That way your furnace is struggling to rise and keep the house temp. I’m dealing with some issues at home too, and while working on diagnose the issue for such a high electricity bill I noticed tons of out side penetrations that u gotta seal. As well missing insulation, since the house is from late 40’s all the insulation is gone. Hope you sorted it out, and I hope i sort mine too 😂
Maybe o possibly is not wired for heat or second stage heat on ur tstat depending wich one u got. Most of the time n according to ur complaint the Fan or blower inside is running but not the Electric heat element
We have a heat pump, unit is outside; it runs constantly, we hardly ever put it up past 67, and it doesn't ever feel warm?😢
Replace the fuses near the heat pump in that panel box.
Maybe it's in defrost mode . When in defrost mode make sure the auxiliary heat turns on.
The problem im having is the fan on the outside unit is not turn on for heat... But it is turning on when i put the AC on.
It may be the high pressure switch is opening in heating mode. The switch is operated by refrigerant pressure, and if the pressure gets too high in heat mode, the switch will stop power to the fan until the pressure drops. I may not be totally correct, there may be other issues also, but it would be worth a service call. I'm not the world's greatest tech but I try my best lol.
My fan won’t turn in either mode does this mean I’m low on refrigerant?
@@beezy870 I usually turn off the breaker directory associated w the mini split (Fujitsu in my case) if I want to rest if the fan is still working (it almost always has been working). Then if you turn on the first panel that becomes the main. For any night below 45 degrees crank the rooms you need to 76. Otherwise 68 etc. hope this helps and keep the cool air perception discussed in this video in mind!
Great video!!
My heat pump seems to be running. The high pressure line is hot but inside the house the fan won't run . But the fan does run in other modes. Can you help . Thanks
Hi Erick, thanks for the question. We thought the best way to get you a detailed answer was to just answer your question in this week's video: ruclips.net/video/QE6yW1NN76U/видео.html. Your question is the second one we answer. I hope that helps! Sometimes it is hard without actually being there to diagnose the problem, but hopefully we gave you a place to start. Thanks again!
Well I'm not seeing the steam come out of the unit outside like I used to
So compressor can be burned out, but it’s not heating because it’s cold outside? It’s leaking and released all refrigerant, but not heating because it’s cold outside? Reversing is bad, but is not heating because it’s cold outside. Makes sense, that explains why water is wet too.
Should it take 6 hours to go from 66 to 68 inside when it’s 65 outside though?
That's what's happening to me did you get it figured out
I hate my heat pump. There is nothing inside my house, the whole unit is outside. When I set the therm to just heat, not emer heat, the blower runs constantly with that crap cool air and if I set it to seventy I get a $250 bill. If I set it to emer heat and 65 degs I get a $150 bill and I’m more comfortable. To hell with the environment. When it blows up and I actually hope it does I don’t want anything to do with heat pumps.
I think it's the w wire you need to connect.
The thermostat is set to 74 but the heater can't get it past 71. something is wrong.
Did he say when it is colder outside there is less heat in the air.
Yes
Yes he did n he is right it's a thermodynamic law
Nice
No mention of defrost mode ?
If I can only get 64º when it is set to 68º is it because the refrigerant is low?
My 4 ton ducted heat pump will blow 110F air with out door temp is 14F after it has not run for 6 or more hours. Every time it starts up after that first run of the day it blows 10F cooler air. I have measured all these temps with a heat gun.
What if its not cold outside. It's 64 outside and 68 in the house. The unit never cycles off, just continues to blow cold air
My heat pump stopped blowing warm air. Running constantly with E heat to boost as helper. Did you have that problem?
Well what about when the outside unit stays white with ice all the time
Defrost board may not be functioning. You need to have a tech take a look at it. 16 years in the field but on a hiatus for a year.
It's still blowing cold air, I'm bald and I feel it
@Maddog worker i called Google and they checked it and its not working, i will try Honeywell
Lol
😂, wear a beanie or join hair club for men.
Heat pumps are temperamental. Why design a machine to blow cool air in winter but the remote has a heater function and a sun symbol. Just illogical.
I hate heat pumps
What is the solution of heat pump does'nt work eather no power
I’m having this problem but it has that awful smell.
heat pumps don't work when its cold outside. I don't use or need heat when its 50 degrees outside.
My god this unit was invented by a politician
I hate the heat pump!! It runs for hours and it may raise it one degree, sure I can put on emergency heat and then my electric bill sky rockets! Its the worst design for heat ever! Its good for a/c NOT heat...sorry there's no warmth to be captured when its freezing outside.
When the temperature drops below 25°F you then have to turn on the auxiliary or emergency heat.
What if you don’t have any ? I live in a condo. There is no back up - only the heat pump. It could get to - minus degrees where I live.
Heat pump sucks! I hate it with a passion! I live and roommate with people and they have heat pump. And in my bedroom, in the winter time the vents in my bedroom blows cold air and I freeze my butt off, I might as well go live outside! 😒 And in the summer time it blows cold air which makes sense, but in the winter time......No! ☹️ In the winter time I can't win for losing because my roommate gets angry with me because I snuck her heater in my bedroom one night because she claims I'll run up the electric bill! Well I'm not trying to get sick! 😒 Good grief! 😞☹️ I am definitely not a winter person and I easily get sick around the cold months. I am more of a spring and summer person because I never never get sick! But being in a cold room and being cold outside I cannot win for losing. The vents in my bedroom blows out cold air for the first 5 minutes and then lukewarm, not hot as in actually heat! Whenever I get a place of my own I am going to definitely make sure the house is equipped with regular heat. I'm going to make sure it's equipped with regular heating system and no stupid heat pump! 😒 My roommate upstairs across the hall from me keeps the thermostat on 63° and the stinking winter time! And the other roommate downstairs keeps hers on 55° in the stinking dead of winter time! So y'all go figure that out for me! I am not going to get sick for them and I refuse! And I'm shocked that the roommate downstairs brought me up a heater for my room which is great! That really shocked me! I also have a heating mattress pad underneath me while I'm under my covers in the bed which helps a lot, but it doesn't help when I get out of the bed early in the morning to go in the bathroom to take a shower to get ready for work because the room itself is cold! But thank God my roommate downstairs brought up a heater for me to use! Again I hate heat pump with a passion! There are many times at night or even in the daytime that my bedroom will be so so cold to the point where when I touched anything and everything in my room it too was very cold! My little end tables beside my bed was freezing cold, the toilet seat was freezing cold as if I was outside in the John! 🙄
But once I get a place of my own and if it's in a good Lord's will, I hope and pray the house I get will not have heat pump.
With a heat pump system which is what I have and I agree it's not as warm as you'd like it not at all! But those systems also have regular electric he would you can switch to which helps it be a whole lot warmer and it's too bad they couldn't do that for a time during the winter
@@sherrya6922 I agree.
Our house is electric and has a heatpump the inside unit is running but the outside unit is not.
This happened to us last year the auxiliary or emergency ran the entire time. We will replace the capacitor and it changed this year. But we're still having issues therefore what I would do is call a service person if you're a do-it-yourself guy and get their opinion and fix it
HE didn't even ask what kind of heat pump she had.Does she have an arctic heat pump DESIGNED for cold weather.Iam not the only one living in Canada and I can tell you they heat real well in minus 15 to minus 30.The only thing is their efficiency drops so you may want to use backup heat for real cold.AND I mean colder than what he's talking about
Quick answer, heat pumps suck. In the winter the air is cold so in order to warm the house the answer is to use a different source for heat.
Wrong! Have two in the space one blowing cold and one blowing hot. Not even close to a reasonable explanation. Have the hyper heat units and the quality is still questionable for theses products. Definitely either not well engineered or not well communicated about their actual heating ability.
Heat pumps suck. When you've had gas heat all your life, then buy a house with electric heat and a heat pump, you wonder if this is a joke someone has played on you.
so heat pumps are a waste of time then
so put a heater inside the heat pump.
cause this was dumb.
Hey guy you missed the question, lol😅
TLDR: A Heat Pump is a POS
My Samsung sucks. I have no heat.
I just watched over 5 minutes of the most stupid video from a man who went on and on about the heat outside and got no advise on how to check anything. Very disappointing.
You have to be uncomfortable to achieve efficiency.
Heat pumps suck
