I'm beyond disappointed that this isn't a hard top anymore. It's a huge mis-step on Mercedes part, imo. Should have had the soft top as an option, because no matter how good the noise isolation is, it'll never be as good as it would be with a hardtop. Super glad they added AWD though!
There's no way they would engineer 2 tyres of folding roof for the same car. Also there is the new AMG GT which uses the same chassis and is fixed roof coupe .
I don't know why this car brings up some special emotions to me. The first time i saw it at a national auto show, my legs went weak. The hood is so long and the front end has so much character, it's a striking design. Now i know that this beauty is also a beast on the road. Definitely my new dream car.

Love seeing this a week after I get my SL63. The screen I will say does take a lot of getting used to, especially waiting for the drop top part of it to get ready to activate. But, the performance is incredible, and I've had multiple people engage in conversation with me at red lights for compliments (a bit weird but fun).
Glad to see a new generation of petrol heads, I recently acquired a new SL63 and I love it. My dad owned a 450 SL so getting a 63 is a dream come true.
All those capacitive function buttons are ridiculous (in every car ofc), especially when a 1 bigger "molded" piece of plastic covers 2-5 fuction buttons, you'd press one, and the whole plastic moves with the other fuctions as well. So darn cheap
These cars are magical to drive. Having driven one of the older gens, with a similarly lovely V8, I still have fond memories of the day I had with her. That huge body wafting and wave of torque is a feeling like no other.
I had this for a medium period time, got rid of it. The car doesn't know what it wants to be, it's uncomfortable on long journeys, has power but you really don't feel it. It's a strange mix between a luxury comfortable high end cruiser and an AMG for a race track. Did 10k miles on it, threw it away. Also it has problems with the roof, got some water coming in aswell. Porsche is on another level IMHO. It looks fantastic tho, outside aswell as inside, fantastic design really
@@TheLOL4DUDE My biggest gripe is it's just too expensive for what it is. You should be able to get a sub 3 second 0-60 with the price point.. Also, the build quality and materials quality should be a little bit better as well.. The steering wheel centerpiece should be leather not plastic. I've owned Sl63 briefly and traded it for a much cheaper LC500 convertible and the build quality on LC is WAY better and you get a lot more leather and less plastic used. They need to bump the performance a hair and get rid of most of the plastics.
Slapping a 200k pricetag on something, doesn't give quality... that depends more on the mechanical stuff. W124 was last Mercedes that was designed as good as possible, then counting the needed selling price based on the development and manufacturing costs - is why it cost 30% more than other cars in the same class. This - as other Mercs after it aswell - has been aimed at a certain price point, selling price was decided before the actual car even existed... they made this as good as possible for the given amount of time and money available, this time it meant crappy quality for example on the door panels.

Everyone says they lost the way of the SL with the new model because it's not so much a GT as a purpose-built sports car anyomre. Just to remind all of you: the original w198 300 SL was a purpose-built super sportscar, it was the brand's original intention with the SL.
@@yissibiiyte SL63 actually looks like a rare car and has better ride quality, sound, safety, and tech. fit/finish are very comparable too. Performance is VERY close on a normal road too, with yes, the 911 beating it. I see 911s EVERY day and the entry level ones are around 100k starting New SL is 25k+ more starting.
I think you guys and Doug are the only car reviewers that need to be watched. All the other ones are boring and the same and don’t give an overall overview of the car
So...I am fortunate enough to own both the new SL 63 AMG and an older Porsche Turbo 911. I absolutely love Porsche and also have a Taycan Turbo which I will never part with. However, the SL 63 AMG is NOT more nimble that a Turbo, or any other Porsche. That having been said, at this stage of my life, its the SL 63 that is the car I want to drive. Both of these cars have handling, acceleration and precision which far exceeds the upper limits of what is sanely possible on American roads. So, for me, it is the comfort and related GT qualities which are paramount, and this is where the SL 63 outshines the Porsche. The MB is the superior cruiser - full stop. Panache is rather subjective - ride quality is not. MB SL 63 has both. And the car is as quiet with a soft top (if not quieter) than my hardtop Turbo 911. The soft top is that well engineered. If I was a younger man who still went to the track (Monticello mostly), it would be the Porsche all day long. But this new SL is special, not perfect, but special. It threads the needle of GT and supercar. It doesn't dominate either class, but blends these qualities perfectly. So, I would recommend the SL 63 over the Porsche for those who want great capabilities while cruising while keeping your chiropractor visits to a minimum.
I'd take the GTC or any of the GT versions over this. But at least the looks are way better, the outgoing model were a disservice to the SL legacy. Yes old SL 500 R129 would be the dream SL. I did get to drive the 1976 SL 450 my uncle had for a long time before it was sold recently. Grew up being driven in the car by my cousins.
you have no idea how many people told me my 2018 SL63 was gorgeous and pictures were taken when on the highway, it was a lot sweeter in person than photos gave it credit.
I have a 1997 mercedes benz sl500 r129 Black with beige interior, i love it, had it for 26 years and the price of them now has gone way up, I love to take it to the beach, it is a real head turner. I work on mine myself, save thousands of dollars, they are not hard to work on.
Let this car catch a break! It’s fast, beautiful and has a V8. I know this is not really SL ish but the alternative was no SL at all and I prefer this.

What are you guys talking about. Saw this exact color combo the other day. Looks incredible. Car has a lot of road presence. I had a r129 SL500. Believe me you do not want one. Break rotors warp every 1000 miles and when I forgot to up shift out of 1st, it snapped the distributor rotor and burned up the entire exhaust system and lit the underside on fire. Beyond that, it is noisy, has a $10 radio and speakers combined.
Great review as usual. Being a long time MB/AMG client, I'm not quite sold on this car. I think that for a 63 it should look more agressive. The sound, well as you pointed out, 2020+ cars sound terrible now. I my opinion, two things will very much impact sales, the price is high and Trudeau's luxury tax will point people toward the used 911 Turbo market. Cheers boys!
Really liked the review like always, to be fair tho, I would add that they’re actually coming back to what the SL should be rather than the contrary. The SL was originally a race car. It then became a luxury gran-tourer that was really appreciated, until the 2000s where it really really became quite boring and was really dying in mercedes’s lineup in the last 5 years. With this one, they are imo making the SL a not « 70 year old with a lot of money -only » car but a serious, great GT with driver’s car characteristics that deserve the SL name. Really impressive and shows the expertise of AMG and Mercedes in making the best comprise between sport and comfort. Love mercedes so probably biased but Anywayy, cheers, keep up the good stuff 👍🏼

Had M8 coupe and considered the SL63 as it was coming out. The dealers wanted $15,000 (US) ADM markup at the time, pass. Ended up finding 2020 AMG GTR-Pro and got that instead :)
My dream car. Has any car manufacturer had a tablet where the display turns off after a preset time. Now the tablet doesn’t shutoff, the screen just goes black that’s all.
Throughout history, the SL has always represented a glamorous lifestyle with its understated elegance. The car has lost all subtlety and discretion. It is the antithesis of what the SL and Mercedes-Benz used to represent, unfortunately. But it is certainly a desirable vehicle in its own right, just not one of the great SLs.
I love the new one but it isn’t quite as special as the older one. We have a 2009 sl63 we have loved for the past few years it’s a really special car. We are about to put it up for sale and upgraded to a c63s because the new SL is too over the top for the Manitoba weather and how much we can drive it.
Looks super sharp, I like it, but idk if I could deal with that door everyday….crazy how something so simple could make you just feel like you’re driving something cheap

Yeah this new one looks way too blobby and fat. The amg gt was long, sleek and brawny, especially before they updated the grill

They're just being fooled by quick, numb steering and overactive rear-wheel steer that give that illusion. No other reviews share that sentiment.

Part of that was the conical door locks. I think they switched to the bladed locks in the 90's.

I love the new one but it isn’t quite as special as the older one. We have a 2009 sl63 we have loved for the past few years it’s a really special car. We are about to put it up for sale and upgraded to a c63s because the new SL is too over the top for the Manitoba weather and how much we can drive it.
