I’m a car guy, but I haven’t been able to find a particular reason as to why they add rear seats knowing basically no one will fit back there. IS there a reason why they do that instead of making another design for that back part?

Hi Matt, thanks for the great video. My husband and I watch your channel together and love your insights. Our anniversary is coming up and he has mentioned your jacket a couple of times and I would love to get one for him. Can you let me know the brand and where you bought it?
Bit on the large size for my liking. I think I'd prefer the Porsche 911 Cabriolet turbo because of its more compact feel. You could have a lot of fun with that Merc in a straight line or in tunnels with the exhaust system on anti- social loud.
For some reason i’m underwhelmed by the car, so much excitement over a new SL, but doesn’t seem it’s gonna set the world on fire. Interior is wonderful and it looks stunning with the roof down, not so much with the roof up, but maybe that’s it, it’s a GT to compete with Bentley and Aston Martin. Maybe i shouldn’t see it as an out and out 911 beater.
Yes, I feel the same. The old SLs were never about trying to keep up with a 911, and were all the better for it. Now it’s harder, faster, etc. but still not a sports car. Conflicted in purpose, I think...
@@eventusvantos1905 I would question its utility as a grand tourer if it’s a firm ride with uncomfortable seats. Cars like this should be able to waft away 1,000km in a day, not require an hour of yoga at every service station. 99% of the life of a car like this is going to be cruising; I’m sure it’s better than a Bentley on a track but how many people will do that? Another old time SL for grandpas would have meant another flop for Merc. I think they had enough of boomers. Just seeing how dismal the sales of something like the LC500 are should clue anybody in. That Lexus is like half the price used and still nobody buys them. Its wafty, its slow, its sloppy, totally outdated,... Precisely what old timers are supposed to be interested in yet its a total flop
So...I am fortunate enough to own both the new SL 63 AMG and an older Porsche Turbo 911. I absolutely love Porsche and also have a Taycan Turbo which I will never part with. However, the SL 63 AMG is NOT more nimble that a Turbo, or any other Porsche. That having been said, at this stage of my life, its the SL 63 that is the car I want to drive. Both of these cars have handling, acceleration and precision which far exceeds the upper limits of what is sanely possible on American roads. So, for me, it is the comfort and related GT qualities which are paramount, and this is where the SL 63 outshines the Porsche. The MB is the superior cruiser - full stop. Panache is rather subjective - ride quality is not. MB SL 63 has both. And the car is as quiet with a soft top (if not quieter) than my hardtop Turbo 911. The soft top is that well engineered. If I was a younger man who still went to the track (Monticello mostly), it would be the Porsche all day long. But this new SL is special, not perfect, but special. It threads the needle of GT and supercar. It doesn't dominate either class, but blends these qualities perfectly. So, I would recommend the SL 63 over the Porsche for those who want great capabilities while cruising while keeping your chiropractor visits to a minimum.
The Problem with ev s is, that they have to Care about aerodynamics much more. And in Addition to that, they are build for the chinese Market so thats why they Look how they Look.
I usually like black wheels but the SL looks 10x better with silver wheels. I believe the SL 55 is the one to get because this car shouldn’t have the stiffer ride of the SL 63 and the extra power is totally unnecessary.
Its really a dream car my favorite convertible cars are Mercedes SL63 , BMW M4 , Mercedes E class Convertible , Porche 911 turbo S Convertible, BMW 6 series convertible This car made me smile 🥰😍
Love the Gen 1 iPad on +100k dollar car. Dont bother paying industrial automotive designer to make a centre console. Just contact LG and ask for 11 inch monitors.
3:56 I really hate how alot of cars these days are ignoring, neglecting or doing away with center front storage. Its the easiest place in the car to access, and you need that when you're on the go. Ignoring it is stupid as hell.
Don’t know who this chap is, but as someone who’s only here incase I win the lotto tonight, he’s part of the reason I made it to the end. Beautiful car too.
It seems most manufacturers of high performance engines are limiting the amount of revving in "park" to stop owners a) from revving the engine while it is cold and b) to keep turbo temperatures from exceeding maximums because the car isn't moving. Yes, the turbos are still cooled while the car is still, but these "hot v" turbos can run very very hot and building temperature in them while the car is at rest is likely not a very good idea. These high end engines, and particularly the AMG engine with no cylinder liner, just won't tolerate this abuse over time so the manufacturer is protecting the engine from damage by people who don't know how the manage the car.
As an actual SL customer, I don't like it. It's much more expensive than the previous R231 SL. It has useless rear seats, and I don't like the soft top. They say the top is lighter, but the car itself is significantly heavier. And, in the UK, especially in London, where so many SL owners park on the street, the security aspect will surely increase insurance premiums. I don't think this car is aimed at buyers of the previous several generations of the SL. It's more of a baby AMG GT Roadster, which, frankly, I would much prefer if I wanted to ditch class for aggression. For me, I'd rather have a 911. However, I acknowledge the general praise for this car in the other comments. Maybe Mercedes have got this car just right for the next generation of SL buyers, or maybe all the praise is coming from those who wouldn't buy one even if they could afford to. I don't know, only time will tell. I really don't see it as a logical purchase. A 911 will hold its value better. Maybe it'll sell to those who can't quite afford an AMG GT Roadster...or those who really want a leather-clad parcel shelf that looks like seats, but Mercedes already offered plenty of choice when it comes to four-seat rag tops. I know there'll be cheaper versions in the UK with four-cylinder turbo engines, which will go well enough, but again, I don't see such appealing to buyers of the previous generation SL. And if you're not already an SL customer, I think you're going to buy a 911, or really want an AMG GT Roadster. That would then make this the car you buy when you really want a GT Roadster but can't quite afford one. If I'm right, contrary to most of the other comments, rather than being the car that saves the SL from dwindling sales by attracting a new generation, it will be the car that kills off the SL for good. Speaking of those dwindling sales, I don't think it was because of the ageing buyer, but because of the sheer number of convertibles on offer within just the Mercedes/AMG line-up, which by the way contradicts the opposing popular narrative that sports and convertible sports cars aren't as popular as they once were. And on that note, all the others had/have soft tops, and all the others had/have four seats, except the AMG GT Roadster. And across the range, the engine choice includes 4/6cyl turbo diesels, 4/6/8cyl turbo petrols, and of course the old SL was still available with a 12cyl turbo petrol. So, IMO, making a front-engined rival to the Porsche 911, even taking rear-end styling cues from it, is a mistake. The only downside to the 911 is how common it is, but it's common for good reason. And it's now the classier, more reserved option, too. For those determined to stay with the three-pointed star, I suggest either stepping up to the AMG GT Roadster, or waiting for the new S Class Convertible. But, IMO, neither would make a good replacement for the old SL. As always, YMMV. It shoudn't ;P , but going by the other comments I've read it probably will.
Well, this looks better than the previous gen SL for sure. But I was hoping for more distinctive styling for Mercedes' most premium convertible. I'm not sure I like how the front end looks too similar to the A35/A45 models or that the whole car is just like a roadster AMG GT. Hoping Mercedes just retained the signature side vents instead of just plastering some black plastic trim. I appreciate that the hyperscreen mess of the EQS isn't here but Mercedes has done a better job in integrating the infotainment screen on the AMG GT than in this new SL.
For boot space an old bmw E89 with the roof up, you get 310litres of space and 500nm of torque, for 1600kg so it hasn’t moved the game on that much. That rather after thought iPad contraption will suffer all kinds of glare in an open top surely… but overall it does look alright.
Name a better soft top than the AMG SL. We'll wait...

I understand this car is way out of my league but i do wonder do Porsche owners ever consider an SL as a car worth considering.
I always imagined the SL is more of a comfortable GT for the people who aren't too bothered about track focused handling rather than the more focused Porsche equivalent.
Love your reviews. Please make one on the new Maserati Quattroporte SQ4!
I would have a GT roadster instead of this as it looks far nicer to my eyes. I don’t think there is enough distinction between the two.

Track & Drag mode? Telemetry? Why is that in a GT car?
Numbers are ruining the cars. With the SL you're supposed to savour the road, not to attack it
For some reason i’m underwhelmed by the car, so much excitement over a new SL, but doesn’t seem it’s gonna set the world on fire.
It's classy sports convertible/ grand tourer
More luxurious than a 911 and sportier than a bentley
@@eventusvantos1905 I would question its utility as a grand tourer if it’s a firm ride with uncomfortable seats. Cars like this should be able to waft away 1,000km in a day, not require an hour of yoga at every service station.
99% of the life of a car like this is going to be cruising; I’m sure it’s better than a Bentley on a track but how many people will do that? (Or want to do it?)
@@edtheduck6219 it is comfortable. Not as comfortable as the Bentley but more comfortable than the 911
Not as good handling as 911 but better handling than bentley
To be able to waft like bentley you completely give up sportiness and handling
You don't need yoga service at all. It's Suspension is great and with the comfort seats it's especially comfortable
You don't need to take it on a track to enjoy it's better handling. A canyon road will do just fine which is what most people will do with this
@@edtheduck6219 Then dont option in the sporty seats!! Its got frikin air suspension on it. Dont worry, if you want to, you can waft away for as long as you want. And GT were never made nor are they used for such long trips anyways. They're still toys and the sporty ones are always the best sold.
I actually like this SL, in the past I just saw the SL as a tasteless old rich person car but this one is actually nice
I love the design of this! I just dont get why they mess up the design of their electric cars?
The Problem with ev s is, that they have to Care about aerodynamics much more.
And in Addition to that, they are build for the chinese Market so thats why they Look how they Look.

best looking Mercedes hands down.
I usually like black wheels but the SL looks 10x better with silver wheels. I believe the SL 55 is the one to get because this car shouldn’t have the stiffer ride of the SL 63 and the extra power is totally unnecessary.

5:08 It's a 2+2 as you mentioned. Here in the US that makes a big difference for insurance. Not really supposed to be functional.
In my honest opinion, the last beautiful SL is the r230 (01-08)
I really like the changes they made on the SL for 2022. AWD is coo.
3:56 I really hate how alot of cars these days are ignoring, neglecting or doing away with center front storage. Its the easiest place in the car to access, and you need that when you're on the go. Ignoring it is stupid as hell.
best in class .. never thought I would like a soft top before making thus SL
Yes Thank God I will buy one for myself
Fantastic exhaust note, very reminiscent of the original SL55...!
SL is SUPER LIGHT actually 6:55, there is a old paper from the factory where it says that. I'd like a 1,4t SL with a 7.3L monstrous engine
Damn this interior looks so much better than the 2 big screens that that other models have
The most stunning merc since the sl65 Black
They nailed the design!
It’s look so elegant but classy and very sporty.
Agree with the exterior... The interior still has got space to become better.
For boot space an old bmw E89 with the roof up, you get 310litres of space and 500nm of torque, for 1600kg so it hasn’t moved the game on that much. That rather after thought iPad contraption will suffer all kinds of glare in an open top surely… but overall it does look alright.
Best Mercedes Exterior design In a while
