    Just tried this technique for the first time in Myrtle. Not a lot of luck, but it definitely sparked my interest. Thanks for the video

      @@pheasanttales7607 have a look at my “surf fly fish tutorial” video. Hope that helps. Very effective if it’s well practiced. Good luck.

      Have you tried fishing Murrells Inlet from the north end of Huntington Beach State Park? That's a pretty decent place to throw a fly. Depending on the tide there's a lot of ground to be covered wading, and I was there a few weeks ago. There were tons of fish feeding the flats area at slack/near low tide. Had a lot of fish follow my deceiver but only managed to hook up a flounder. If I'd had a better stocked fly box I think it would've been a much better outing.

      @@pheasanttales7607 Use the northern most parking/beach access, and it's still a nice little walk up to the jetty and inlet, so pack some snacks! A floating line is probably fine unless the tide is low enough and you want to try and wade/cast to the main channel, then you'll need an intermediate sink.

    Keep 'em coming Tim! My question about floating vs. full intermediate line was addressed below. The breakdowns of casting into surf was very helpful.

    Really enjoyed your video and thanks for the equipment description. This helps a lot since I fly fished for trout for quite a while but just started salt water fly fishing last year. Have not been out yet this season due to the virus but upside is been tying lots of salt flies. Keep up good work.

      Sure thing John, get out there ASAP! Good fishing these days, especially with all the bluefish. If you get into the choppers, you'll be happy you tied all those flies! I donated quite a few to the fish gods these past couple weeks. Tight lines!

    You’re a good writer. Your narration has a poetic quality. I’m heading out this weekend to try some surf cast fly fishing for the first time ever. We’ll be on the coast of Rhide Island. Do you think I need waders? Thanks for the tips.

      Thanks so much! Sorry I didn't get back to you in time for your trip! I'm rarely rocking waders in the summer time....pretty much only at night. Rocky shore line though... might wanna be wearing boots, and if I'm gonna get those boots wet, there will likely be waders on underneath. Hope you caught some fish!

    I grew up on the south fork and haven't been back there in a decade, but we always used an intermediate line or sinking tip in the surf. Do you feel like a floating line is more effective? Killer drone footage in one of your other vids, by the way.

    • @SouthForkSalt

      thank you Greg. I really can't say which is more effective, but here's my thought: I figure I can fish the bottom effectively (most of the time) with a floating line and sinking fly; I can't fish the surface AS effectively with a sinking line and floating fly. So 98% of my fly fishing is done with floating fly line. I always keep a sink tip on me just in case.
      Something specific to me is, if there are bluefish around I most likely want to target them, and do it with topwater.

    Why do you prefer to use float line over intermediate or sink line?

    • @SouthForkSalt
      @SouthForkSalt  3 года назад +1

      Easier to pick up and recast, without having to retrieve all the line first. It’s probably easier to catch fish in the surf with floating versus sinking line, but I appreciate the challenge.

    what's a fleye? do you mean a fly?

    • @SouthForkSalt
      @SouthForkSalt  4 года назад +3

      "Fleyes" are flies tied by the living legend Bob Popovics. He invented a variety of saltwater fly patterns which are showcased in his book "Fleye Design." Look up "hollow fleye" and "beast fleye."
