- Took the fly rod out to the surf for the first time trying to get lucky and catch some surf perch or even striped bass. I was using an 8 weight Sage Fly rod with 7.5 foot tapered 16lb test leader and a sand crab imitation fly.

Watching you from Klamath falls Oregon like how you talk fishing nothing else and you take the time to explain what you doing for the beginning fishing people
That’s amazing how you knocked that out can’t wait to try this for myself great stuff skippa keep up the great work and hopefully 🙏 one day we can go link up to do some catching lol 🌅🛸🎣🤙
So I've been watching your videos for a while and you have no idea how hooked I am. You deliver some of the best content on RUclips. Very much worth watching right before bed with the lights off all comfortable.
The places you visit are breathtaking, you are very lucky indeed to experience something like that. I also see how you like to camp in the middle of nowhere by yourself, I know you're probably an expert but please be careful man, never know what's out there. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Stay safe!
Wow thanks for the comment. I've got some crazy ideas I want to do over the next year but I'll be careful as much as I can!
This is awesome!
I love fishing so you explaining all this even knowing everything you’re saying specifically doesn’t bother me . It makes me feel good like that class you loved to go to on Wednesday .
Heck yea Matts. I think I was more pumped than you when you hooked up hahaha. I mainly fly fish for trout but when I surf perch I will use the Carolina rig with a fly lol. I've been wanting to fly fish for surf perch for a while now. Thanks for the info. I now have some confidence to actually try it out. Bless up brotha 🙏
Definitely gonna try this
again right on time, been sick and at home and this video made my day
Good and informative...instructional!!!
I couldn't flyfish to save my life. But, I have to admit, it looks really cool. Beautiful day for fishing. Thanks for the video.
That was great! I’ve seen a few people that do this and do well. Great vids!
Broooo that coat!!!! Definitely getting me one!! Not sure if I would prefer the camo over that color. I mean I like em both!! Either way definitely copping myself one when available. Also, I've never fly fished in my life but I appreciate you explaining things. The more detail the better for novices like myself lol. Thanks homie🤟🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good luck on your surgery!! Hope for a speedy recovery :)
Awesome video as usual
Nice video man big fan hope surgery goes well
Beach fly fishing is THE most difficult type of fly fishing. Come down this summer and sight cast to Corbina and Spotfin Crocker. One tip, fish A LOT SHALLOWER then you think. Where you were standing is where the perch most likely were at - they feed in crazy shallow water.
Hope everything works out with your surgery and you have a fast recovery
Great video!
The guys at Lost Coast Outfitters have some great gear and info for fly surf fishing. The have some fly rods that are custom made for the West Coast Surf.
Looks like a great day to be fishing!
We usually use our Spey set ups to do this. 13 foot rods to get out and over the waves.
Maybe I'll have to learn that next
Good job. You pretty much got all your terminology correct. Your casting motion is actually pretty good for a rookie. Your casting wrist is on a very good horizontal plane. No wonder your line is shooting out fairly well. Make sure you’re always wearing sunglasses. Surf flies can often get into your face or back of the head depending on the wind or if your fly is hitting the water at the end of the forward or back cast and weighting down your fly. Be safe out there.
Beautiful drone footage !
Great video !!! Grew up fly fishing all over Oregon, salmon, trout, steelhead. Just pulled the rods out this week I’m in HMB. Hope to run into y’all 🎣
Hope all goes well with the surgery! 🤙🏽👊🏽
Cool Video! This is what i do when i fish for seatrout. two pro tips: if you have the linebasket on your side-hip, you will be able to get more line in one strip, because its a longer distance aka more movement in the fly. You could also point the tip of the rod towards the water and the end of the fly rod higher up (Where the reel is) towards your arm, when you strip in. If you do this, you will feel the strikes much easier and can set the hook easier aswell :)
Man's getting fish on a fly rod when I can't even get some on spinning lmao🤣
Good attempt at explaining, it's hard to explain but I get it! 🤸
Loving those wide camera shots
ima cop me a camo jacket for sure also need to restock my jiggy jigs for this season rock bangin!
Looks like a beautiful place to fish.
Fly fishing tip. When assembling your rod, start from the top and work your way down. Not from the bottom to to top.
Good little tip! I like it!
Why's that?
@@iflanzy When assembling from the bottom you're constantly having to balance the weight of the bottom of the rod with a flexible mid shaft or stick it into the dirt/sand to hold it still. Assembling from the top down keeps the fragile tip in the air and keeps the rod out of the dirt/sand.
@@areess6209 While I've never put my rod together on a beach, I have a 9' 5wt and I don't see the helpfulness of doing what you're talking about. The rod is going to get wet anyways and when fishing, you're most likely resting your rod against the tree or on the ground at some point anyways. It's also very simple to always have the tip in the air by starting the assembly with the handle piece...by just putting a section on at a time normally.
@@iflanzy Water. Sure. I'm talking about dirt and sand possible getting into the reel when you put it on the ground. My reel isn't separate from the rod when I out it together. So I start at the top and work my way down. That way nothing is getting dragged in the dirt.
Time flies when you're flie fishing haha
Well done! Not making fishing easy, but looks fun. Stripers on the fly next!
Great video. Headed out to buy a combo
Been fly fishing for 2 year now and I can say learning this never ends and it’s EXPENSIVE AF
the most expensive part is the gas taking trips to remote mountain streams etc.
Loved watching this I do the same in wales Uk for bass
You explain loading up the rug perfectly
All summer down here in southern California im usually casting in and just to the other side of the trough right up at the beach. Corbina, perch, croakers, and even the occasional hali can be right in there.
A short straight piece of mono or fluorocarbon also works in the surf!
Packaged leaders like that include the tippet on the end… you’d only add tippet after you trim the included tippet section back after changing flies or to lengthen your leader with a thinner or less lbs. test tippet.
You've got nothing to apologize about your fly fishin style, man, you have a gr8 cast.ive been flyfishin all over, started in the 50's.the only complaint I've got is trying to get leader through the eye of the hook
Damm my man take care of your self bro you and more than fishing are my main fishing guys hope all goes well with the hip. 💯👍👍
Well done bro. You have improved so much with the fly rod. From the thrashing it about.
When you think you are loading the rod. You need to pause an extra second- 2 seconds.
What your cast at 15:15,
You need to stop the back cast between 11-12 on a clock position. This will allow the line to flex the rod . Hope this helps 🎣
I HEARD THE HAIKYUU OST AT 10:38 I was calling enjoying the video and it just hit me 😂
Dude I'm going to have to try that out lol
Awesome video. My cat sat down on my key board and pulled this video up. She's got great on youtubers or she might to try Surf Perch
Good luck on the surgery matt!
Come down to Socal when the corbina are biting in summer. They will munch on those sand crab flies. I would drill some bigger holes in your stripping basket in case you get swamped, it will drain much faster.
We usually use our Spey setups to do this. 13’3” rods to get above the waves and get distance.
👍🙏 fast recovery.
Can you suggest some tack and lure to use for pier and dock fishing. I don’t like the bottom rig as much and I want to use my 7ft med heavy rod and not carry a 10 ft rod all the time
Nice video! did the wind affect the casting ability of the fly rod? what was the distance of the cast? very informative, thanks for sharing!
