How to Get Sneak Attack: D&D 5e Rogue Player Advice 🔪

    In my crusade to enable players to play #Rogues more often, I summarized the many ways that #DND5e Rogues can make sure they are getting Sneak Attack damage added to their attacks. This isn't advice for building a min-max Rogue, but it's meant to help all Rogue players consistently get Sneak Attack with their attacks.     Always use advantage if possible, to increase the chance of landing the hit you need for Sneak Attack. Elven Accuracy is a notable feat - won't help you gain advantage but will help you make the most of it.
    Darkness spell + a means to see through magical darkness = consistent advantage. (Half) Dark Elves get Darkness for free once a day, Arcane Tricksters get Spellcasting and therefore qualify for Eldritch Adept for Devil's Sight, and also qualify for Elven Accuracy 😀

      Hi Shard! Elven Accuracy is great because it can boost a mental stat or Dex. Rogues love that. It helps Sneak Attack damage to crit more often, too.
      (Edit: I got this part wrong for some reason, Shard corrected me that there is no prerequisite for Devil's Sight) For the Darkness+Devil Sight combo with Eldritch Adept, the Arcane Trickster will still need to multiclass one level of Warlock since the Eldritch Adept feat says any Invocation with a prerequisite will require the character to meet the requirement AND be a Warlock. That multiclass level would be super worth it, though.

      @@FlutesLoot Devil's Sight doesn't have any prerequisites, I think you can pick it up from the feat without multiclassing 😀

    What a great list! I wrote the list into my player's journal so I can remind myself at the start of battles and max out my sneak attack opportunities with my arcane trickster rogue!

      That's a great way to get Sneak Attack down! Always try to get advantage and make sure nothing ever gives you disadvantage. If you can't get advantage, settle for attacking someone next to your ally :)

    These are such awesome videos!! I left a comment earlier that I am a Druid, thinking to take Poisoner & Observant. We have a Rogue in our party...but this is giving me ideas on how I can WORK WITH him. Sharing this with him, along with your "Rogue Feats". Btw, found your recommended feats for Druids very helpful!!😁

    This was very helpful because I’m new to the game and I have been doing is sneak attacks but not using anything else but when we were in an open Field I was not able to do anything

      I'm glad I could help! My first character was a Rogue, and I enjoyed it endlessly.
      The easiest way to gain advantage is by not moving to use the Steady Aim feature as a bonus action (added in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything to the Rogue class).

    I use the sulker feat to hide when I’m in dim light. Its rather useful.

      If the DM is using lighting rules like dim light, Skulker would definitely be helpful! In my experience, I'd have to prompt the DM to use proper lighting rules so I could use Skulker.

    This is a nice comprehensive list to share with newbies. the only significant misses (meaning an advantage generator that requires minimal level investment like 1-3 levels) i see are illusions (minor illusion, silent image via misty visions), nets (quick toss it, catapult it or use an extra attack), some newer spells (zephyr strike, pyrotechnics + blind fighting style, dust devil + blind fighting style, shadow blade) and fog cloud + blind fighting style.
    just as an an extra note, recommending darkness + eldritch adept: devil sight for a ranged advantage is a poor choice as you can gain the same benefit of obscurement (without resource expenditure and the out of combat utility benefits) by selecting eldritch adept: misty visions. misty visions when played well is essentially a mobile greater invisibility bubble.

      Nice! I knew my list wouldn't be comprehensive. There's always some additional way to gain advantage, haha. The illusion note is a fun one, though I suspect many DMs would put an end to it once the first shot goes through the illusion. It depends on the DM heavily there, but at least for one shot, it'll work!

      @@FlutesLoot not necessarily though yes as with anything in the game, the DM has final say. remember as per JC illusions are perceived as real as long as the illusion isn't broken. this can be round over round advantage for the creative player and is supported by the rules and not merely DM fiat. for example:
      1. minor illusion- create a steel crate like everyone else does but create it with peep holes/slits then any spell effect you launch should pass through those holes/slits. this doesn't break the illusion because an enemy sees a crate and lets say something like ray of frost/crossbow bolt coming out of a hole in the crate makes logical sense. the only DM fiat here is that whether the DM allows you to "fine aim" spells/ammunition through a hole/slit though you can make that slit/hole big enough to counteract that DM fiat and just crouch after attacking/casting.
      2. silent image- this is the big one. silent image (and of course major image) can create atmospheric effects such as smoke, darkness, fog cloud, mist, hail. sand/fire/eldritch storms, etc. JC has clarified that physical interaction only breaks an illusion if physical interaction is not meant to pass through the illusion (like shooting an arrow from inside an illusion of a dragon or a wall). however, if you are shooting an arrow from inside an illusion of a fog cloud this doesn't break the illusion as a physical object such as an arrow is meant to pass through a fog cloud.
      for illusion obscurement, i highly recommend Bilbron's discussion on it. he's the one who opened my mind to misty visions.

      @@FlutesLoot for sure. i think that's an integral part of session zero (discussing how your build works/core tactics with the DM and other players).
      yeah bilbron's fave spell is sleet storm so he's a big obscurement guy (which i know some players at some tables don't like it as it negates their advantage generators). i like obscurement too like bilbron but i lean more towards illusions as these are more "party-friendly." like for misty visions, i encourage the casters/ranged martials to get inside my 15 ft cube so they can benefit as well from the obscurement. the difference between something like sleet storm/fog cloud/darkness/pyrotechnics and misty visions is i can tell my allies once they're inside the illusion that it's an illusion and they should investigate it non-stop (outside of combat) to break the illusion. once it's broken, they can see through the illusion like me. and we can walk around in that illusion and even have it already active as combat starts (silent/major image specifies that the illusion can be moved with an action and also alters it's appearance to simulate the movement so fogs can become rolling fogs).

    If your a bard rogue multiclsss can you use minor illusion to gain advantage for a sneak attack?

      If you use it well and you talk to your DM about your idea, probably. Minor Illusion's options are fairly limited, though.

    I'm new to DND, and I was just wondering but are there any ways for Sneak Attack go go with Phantom (Rogue) effectively? I'm probably deaf but I didn't hear it in the "Reactions for extra Sneak Attack per round" section

    Use the True Strike cantrip. 🎯 I know it's a very unpopular opinion to think True Strike is "useful" enough to take as a cantrip, but taking the Magic Initiate feat and having True Strike as one of your selections could fit thematically for a rogue that (by choice or DM ruling) isn't going to multiclass into a spellcasting class or take the Arcane Trickster subclass. As a cantrip True Strike has essentially unlimited uses and gain Advantage + Sneak Attack Damage every other round, while all of the spells mentioned in this video are Level 1 or higher that are limited by the number of spell slots available. Having True Strike is also much more valuable for a lone rogue scouting ahead and unable to rely on the presence of allies to gain advantage, plus you also don't have to rely on stealth setups just point at the target for one round with true strike while moving and dodging (if you're Level 2+ and have Cunning Action) then move Attack with Advantage hit with additional Sneak Attack Damage then move away, may even use Cunning action to Disengage.

      Decoys aren't allied creatures for the purposes of Sneak Attack, but a DM can certainly rule it that way if they think it makes sense.
