How to Turn the Steering Wheel

- A video on how to turn the steering wheel. The good, the bad, and the dangerous methods. I explain the methods hand over hand, "milking the cow", and "washing the dishes" (these are the names I gave them by the way, nothing official). This is a topic where there is a lot of debate, and these are my personal opinions. So remember to always use whatever method is required where you are driving.

Note: How you turn the wheel is usually a preference rather than a law or rule. However, some places might require you to turn it a certain way at the exam. So make sure that you do what's required wherever you do your exam. While I try to make my videos as universal as possible, rules and laws may vary according to the place where you’re driving and might be different from the ones in this video. Always drive according to the laws and rules that apply to the place where you are driving. Requirements at the driving exam may also be different than the ones shown here. Always respect the requirements that apply to the place where you are passing your driving exam. This video is not meant to replace your official driving courses.
1:49 you know ur dads gonna finesse that parallel parking when he does that
I know you saw that one meme 😂
ll Kybro ll 😂 yup just gotta bring it to youtube
@@easy506th2 I was thinking about that exact meme when I was watching the video 😂

Whattt? Mine is 600 dollars for 20 hours course 😶
200 dollars for 48 hours?! That's really good compared to my plan priced at 150 dollars for just 10 hours
@fruit punch samurai 10 dollars? Lol

wiping the dishes looks cooler
And the dishes are clean too.
Conduite Facile hahaha, nice videos btw. Really need the help since im trying to get my license and you are good at showing and explaining:)
Can I use the "wiping the dishes" on the driver's test cause I'm so used to it but don't want to get an error. Hopefully someone can reply fast cause I'm taking it tomorrow morning
Obey Samurai I wouldn’t recommend it just do the overhand method instead
Tech deck No neck Damn should've practiced that one then shit
First time I turned a car I spinned the steering wheel so fast my mom was abt to scream
Omg lol so funny wow! Crazy!!!😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😆💯💯💯⚛🚸🚸⚠️⚠️

Me too and i was 17 i got so scared and held that steering wheel too tight from fear thankfully i stopped the car right before hitting a wall 😂
I actually failed my driver's test for turning using the last method (Nevada). Make sure to keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times! Good luck, you're gonna do great.
Same
Glad I saw this lol
@@AP-wu1rv this guys videos did miracles for me haha. I was not ready to drive on my own before this and deserved to fail the first couple tests. The test is actually pretty easy in hindsight, I’m glad they didnt pass me lol
I have a tip for those who are failing or just having trouble with the test. Be slow, you see if you're driving slow or taking your time then less mistakes you make all the while you're paying attention. Don't worry about going a little under the speed limit but don't go too slow. I always had in mind 27mph on side streets to 30 mph on main roads.
Also, you can kind of cheese the parallel parking on side streets if the houses are divided by a driveway. Yes, I cheesed it at the time and practice later.
Bruh so like what if I’m driving a manual car and need to shift either up/down either before/after my turn… what I need both hands so I have to lug my engine and damage it (too low rpm for a gear)? Fuck that shit they’d be showing me in writing where it says I have to use both hands to turn.
i used to milk my wheel when i started driving.
鬼Gozu But then you got experience by driving
@@birddaddydetta No he got milk from it, LOL
@@bassam_salim u get the milk and drink it
I think its pretty common with new drivers
Oh thankfully I'm not the only one lmfao. I have the beginning habit of doing this too. 😂 Any tips for left/right turns with the hand-over-hand method?

1) Normal people
2) Noobie/beginners
3) Roadman 😎😂

Finally, someone who knows how to use the steering wheel correctly. Now the other issue i see, is how do you get the people who dont know how to use a steering wheel to watch this video???????!!!!!!!!!
metalhead BADMOJO Share it to them.
metalhead BADMOJO practice with a plate or something round like a steering wheel first
Wow most of this video will cause you to immediately fail your test in the UK. Letting go of the steering wheel not a good idea show lack of control. Even if he was a good driver he has no clue when the wheels are straight. When you know which way the wheels are pointing you can do this.
ruclips.net/video/UXL_DaTNxHE/видео.html
The UK use this method. Except you can't slid the wheel. Same with UK high speed police driver tests.
ruclips.net/video/e5IJL6rwe_8/видео.html
Watch it?
i don't understand why some people giving this video a thumbs down.
Jude Carcedo because they are a pu..y
They can't pass there drivers test I guess lol
Because of fear of the dubstep used in the video.
dude its ok u can swear openly ur parents arent watching u lmao
Every single video on RUclips with a decent amount of exposure, will get inevitable thumbs downs. It’s unavoidable no matter how reasonable the video is. It is IMPOSSIBLE to satisfy EVERYBODY. What I find is if you scroll far down enough through the comment section, you’ll find some people who aren’t happy with the video and I assume are the ones who clicked the dislike button. You’ll find your reason why for almost every video.
Wiping the dishes 😂😂 Love that name mate!
Tha wishi washi we call it
My drivers ed instructor told me that, during the road test, if you let the wheel slip after making a turn, you will lose points. You are supposed to do hand-over-hand both when turning the wheel to make a turn and when straightening the wheel after the turn is complete.
Thanks I never knew this
Can I use wiping the dishes to make my wheel bad to its place?
Which is odd since it normal for the wheel to move back because of the power steering as long as let it slowly glide through hands its proper vehicle control.
Gibs Music me either
Where do you live? Where did you take you road test? I am a driving instructor in Canada.
This is actually one of the rare good driving videos for turning lol
Im taking my drivering test soon and i love how helpful your videos are. You've earned my subscription

Just wanted to say I seriously appreciate your videos. They're so clear and straight to the point and the POV video is extra useful. I found a lot of mistakes in my driving by watching your videos. Hopefully when I get behind the wheel again I'll be better and eventually get myself a license!
Why are the sexier ways to turn the steering wheel dangerous 😭😭
lol what?
@@JenniferGarcia-xk3ue That’s what I’m saying lol
I dont see how its sexy in everyday traffic. Wiping the dishes is only cool imo in racing and drifting where it’s recommended to be applied.
@@isakdellmark9173 bro are you serious there's no racing driver that does wipe the dishes.
Because dying is sexy when done in a car
I got better because of this men he needs a big recognition so extremely helpful 👏
Thank you man. My dad has been showing me stuff about driving and once I take the test I'm hoping I pass! Wish me luck y'all. I wish anyone else luck who is gonna take the test as well :)

I hope you passed!!
Firmly grasp it!
The animations really help us understand the explanation! RUclipsrs could really learn from your videos. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the vid as it was extremely helpful! Making left/right turns were one of my biggest issues. I used this method during my lesson and my instructor was impressed! Once again thanks for the tips!!!

How tf?
I just want to thank you so much for these videos. My brother and i are very anxious people, and he is just now getting into driving. He is so so soooo nervous when turning, and you have so many GOOD videos that ACTUALLY teach method. They even helped me learn something and I've been driving for 7 years now. I appreciate you.
awesome video as always
Is this patched?
I've gotten so used to driving with one hand that now I gotta re teach myself to drive with two hands for my driving test
i literally did not take a hand off the wheel until i passed my driving test 😂😂
Your videos are so amazing and informative.....they are really helpful....... thank you so much for all the videos
Cool. Glad you like them.
So its called milking the cow... Thank you I knew I was turning the wheel correctly I KNEW IT!!!
Very informative, I very much like this guy, because of how he explains things slowly and professionally. You, gentleman, have my respect.
I appreciate that!
Amazing video. My previous boss drove me to the train station a couple times and I saw him put his hand inside the wheel. I was going to try that myself because it looked really comfortable but I'm glad you explained it clearly.. The example with your friend opened my eyes as well. Thank you.
omg finally someone saying the milking the cow method is ok to use. my dad always yells at me whenever i do it but its the only way for some turns like wut
Love the explanations. The details and the visual are very good, I’m a learner and this has really helped me.
Yea it's better for the airbag to push your hands away, so u can smack the person to your left and while your other hand breaks through the glass
Me watching this after my dad told me never to turn any of these ways and that I need to watch videos on how to steer🧍♀️
I like both hand over hand and milking the cow... but I use milking the cow more because I lose track of how many turns I made with hand over hand.... and I'm worrying about so many different things already
i just took my first driving course and i had trouble with the turns this is very helpful to me thankss
whislt most of us isnt even old enough to turn a steering wheels
I watched this video right before driving and it helped a lot! I still need work on turns but I will admit, I drove 100% better than the last time
Most things about driving are pretty easy to learn, the only exception is steering. Which is far more practical.
Great video! I've only driven a car through a driving school, twice (4 hours total on two seperate days)... I told my parents that we could take practices together, and I might head over to the spot where I was taught (saves us money either way but the car isn't an secured instructing vehicle 😅 so I'd see how this goes down).
I'm cautious/good around other drivers, but might need another lesson. I'd see what I'd decide to do.
Parking & k-turn is done perfectly, the more difficult parts. I'm struggled in areas of hand-over-hand. I don't know why, I keep doing the milking it method, and it's why I'm struggling to making left & right turns (1).
And (2) After making the turn, straightening the vehicle quickly is where I get confused on how to properly straighten the vehicle, and then be going to the right lane. I was fortunate to have been practicing on empty streets that day. I really need to work on these two areas (again, only driven a vehicle twice in my life 😂😂 and having till this December 2nd for my road test-- my parents were afraid of giving a beginner lessons & the program is a pricy fee when living paycheck by paycheck for bills etc-- it's an effort on everyone's part-- I've been struggling to even find a job).
Just focused on becoming a solid & safe driver, and getting life together. Hopefully these videos help. 😅😂🔥
Omg! Yes!
Would you pass the road test if you wipe the dishes when parking, or cross your hands? Great videos!
Here it's ok to do so. Might be different in some other places.
milking the cow 😂😂😂 that's what I do

@@bobbarker3248 Noob? That’s it?
That’s the worst one, use hand over hand much smoother and safer
2:53 Oh that's not good, this is one thing I needed to know.
Yesterday I learnt this technique in yet another video of Conduit Facile, I tried to apply it while I was on my driving lessons. Today I've watched this video and it has more information why I should hold the steering wheel the right way.
1. The air bag
2. Avoid breaking my hands in case of a violent turn of the S wheel.
3. I've also learnt when to use the steering wheel handling styles like 'dishwasher' ... Only when I'm reversing or parking.
Inch by inch is when I'm doing little manoeuvres ....
Love Conduite Facile.
Ok this vid is to advise you to drive properly but what about your car. My car DOSENT have power steering...
This taught me how to use the steering wheel correctly. I'm in drivers Ed and had trouble with the wheel but thanks to this video I understand my flaws 💯🙌
Good video. I have been driving for 48 years and it’s good to continue learning. It’s nice to be refreshed and learn again. I never gave thought about the air bag. Now I know not to grab the wheel rim underhanded or place one hand at the top center of the wheel rim. Thank you. 👍
Other videos were driving me crazy. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.
Bro I be doing milking the cow in my driving lessons and my steering sucks bro i didnt even realise. My instructor told me i need to use the hand over hand way better
I use the second method when I turn left after being stopped at an intersection, but not like how you showed :D Idk how to describe it, but pretty much just do it in one fluid motion. Both hands at the top and moving the left hand down, and turning the wheel sharper once I'm almost finished the turn, if you can picture that. It just feels more comfortable that way for me.
Sir could you please make a video on how to release the steering after turning. While learning my instructor says me to do with both hands but I am not able to and the vehicles starts moving to the side a bit.
I'm learning to drive in the UK so everything is to the left, but I am still finding your videos so helpful. Thank you so much for your videos.
Your videos on turning alone helped me passed my road test in Bronx, NY!!! The instructor and graphics are amazing! I will still continue to subscribe and like because I'm driving in NYC, I need all the help I can get. Thank you!
Cool. Congrats and stay tuned!
I use milking the cow method😂😂😂
I failed my test because of "the milking the cow" method
now we need a video that talkes about how to use a computer mouse so ppl can click and watch the video correctly
Great tips. I usually turn with the "wiping the dishes" technique but now I will change it to two hands to be more safe. Thanks!
The first metod i learned from driving school, the third metod i sperimented alone without see this video, lol
That's why i don't have air bags.😆
the joke's on him
High broo. My father showed me a a different method how to hold the stearing wheel when move forward. Place your left hand in the handrest of a door and grab the stearing wheel from below. Place your other hand to 14 in the stearing wheel. Its just much easier to hold the veichle stragiht when moving forward.

Dominic Toretto fanbois : "But muh 1969 doge charger has no airbags soooooo"
lmao
Oh I just love how you provide this information!!!! So great and very useful!! Keep up the good work 🙂
I do “hand over hand” when turning or “wiping the dishes”, but I thought you aren’t supposed to cross hands in Texas?
Could be. It's not a law but I heard they might require it at the exam.
I can't stop doing it the wiping deashs ... i want learn tow hands.😭
now I have the right reasons to hold the steering wheel in right way... don't just tell people what is the right way but also why it's right.... thanks
I agree with you. I never considered the location of the airbag and I was totally going to try putting my hand in the steering wheel. I will never do it now.
I saw the tittle and thought how the fuck do you do that incorrectly but yeah I see now thanks
I read somewhere that "milking the cow" is the best and safest technique but I always felt awkward and imprecise while doing it. I'm gonna try hand over hand for sharp turns, thanks a lot for the video!
hand over hand helps you to know how many turns you’ve made, whereas milking the cow doesn’t
I absolutely LOVE your video, it was short & sweet and to the point!!!! I"m teaching my daughter how to drive, so this was very helpful....keep them coming!!!!
Tips for passing trucks safely on highway?
Pass them as fast as you can (while staying within speed limits of course), Then when you see them completely in your side mirror, you can change. The important hing here is not to stay next to them for too long, because they have lots of blind spots. That's a good idea for a video. I'll do one.
And please don't brake suddenly after passing any vehicle specially a truck as they stop slower than normal
Jonathan Ferrante It's also a dick move.
CoCoMo76 pedal to the fucking metal
@Kevon Boss It's called endangering people's lifes
what happen air bags is on when hands over method?
It shouldn't happen.
I didn’t realize it was hard driving with two hands😂😂😂😂
Fuck it I’m doing wipe this dishes every fucking time
As a new driver, some of your videos helped with things I found difficult and correct some bad behaviour. Thank you for the helpful videos!
Oh thank god i found this! Before this video i tried turning with the shifter doing 65 and killed 5 families, 2 large dogs and plowed through a Denny's!
Usually turning with the shifter kills only 3 families, 1 cat, and plows through a bakery. Something's wrong with your shifter.
My teacher scolded me for turning the wheels the correct way. He wanted me to do the underhand one
Roryyy Mercury And just because an airbag will break our hands, idiots.
😳 Dangerous... Hopefully you didn't continue going there.
I failed my test because I was doing the hand over hand method and I got so pissed off, I’ve done everything right but failed because how I operate the steering wheel, which hand over hand is what I was doing but what I needed to do was the pull and push method, I’ve got a test again this week, so I hope I pass
Did u pass the second one lol
RINGSx5 I passed on the third go, because I had a cowboy examiner which he pretty much gave me my licence 😂 . However, if you get a female examiner, there’s a 50/50 chance that you might be fucked because they usually doing their jobs, whereas I got the head of all of the examiners which he was a cowboy gave me my licence 😂 he didn’t give a shit 😆
Beenus hopefully I get a cowboy too 🤠
On the second go, another female examiner failed me 4 mins in during the test, and I got heated. She got me to do a reverse straight, and It got terminated because I failed to give way to this car coming towards me while I was reversing and I suppose to stop
RINGSx5 I hope so 😂
You explained wayy better then my driving instructor! Thanks alot🔥
I always find hand over hand somewhat cumbersome as you can very easily over-steer and veer off.
Maybe you're overdoing it.
Oh wow thank u. Taught me more than my teacher
Turning the wheel hand-over-hand is not safe in case of an accident you are blocking the airbag
But in an emergency when you'll need to turn the wheel as fast as possible, you won't be able to do it with the push-pull method.
Someone has Finally cleared my questions about steering! Thank you for this superb and informative tutorial.
Pretty good, with the exception of keeping your thumbs out of the center of your wheel as well. This goes along the same line as incurring injury to your wrist. Not sure how much this is important in small vehicles but for large somewhat tactical vehicles particularly those without power steering thumb injury happens far more often than you would think. The best way to avoid this is to get away from the 10 and 2 obsolescence. You're much better served floating your thumbs above your centerline steering panel but away from the airbag. this will keep your thumbs out of the inside of the wheel and away form the airbag as well. "As suggested "(no manufacturer recommends due to law suits) control of the vehicle . Anyway 10 & 2 is obsolete for many reasons but is better than most. The only direct information now provided is equa distant apart on opposite sides of the steering wheel.
Thanks so much! This helps a lot
Very good explanations. Thanks.
Sharp turns, I finger the donut
THANKING YOU SIR FOR GOOD INFORMATION RELATED TO GOOD DRIVING SKILLS.
I like hand over hand when doing tight maneuvers because I feel like I have the most control but my dad gets mad and says I should milk the cow instead, which I don’t like because it takes longer to fully rotate the wheel.
Your dad is wrong. Mine says hand over hand is obligatory in tight turns.
I just started driving yesterday and found out hand over hand was easier
I honestly use the wiping the dishes method for everything. For some reason I despise hand over hand and I find milking the cow useless other than one situation. But other than that I use wiping the dishes for everything. I drive with 1 hand 😬
you are the BEST wow those airbags tips are legit
This is so helpful, thank you!!
I just have to come straight and say it: I love you man, thx for these amazing vids!
i am a new learner driver from Quebec and i am on my 4th lesson but i have trouble turning the wheel when turning at sharp turns or on the road especially after a stop sign. Could you do a video explaining how to turn smoothly?
I guess vision is your problem You're either looking at the floor or in front. Look where you want to go. I have a few videos on that coming.
Driving teachers we never teach you like this, because they want you to pay more money,to keep failing it,God bless you bro
This was the most helpful video I found on steering! I’m still kind of nervous about driving but in my opinion this was so much easier to understand than other videos, let alone an actual instructor
i did underhand when doing turns into parking lots sometimes, now i absolutely won't at all. thanks for possibly saving my hand
Thank you so much for ALL your VERY HELPFUL videos!!! Can you please dedicate a tutorial specifically for turning on windy roads like in this video where you used the milking method? I am still not confident with the wheel and I have found myself in an occasion where I was turning on a windy road where the car was turning appropriately, but my 2 hands stayed in place and were basically crossed over as if to make an "x" shape. It seems like a continuous problem where I am overturning the wheel because of anxiety even though the car is being turned appropriately. I also seem to have trouble with slowing down and keeping the car at an appropriate speed to make a complete left or right turn without "overturning".
I have a video on "Turning" coming soon where I discuss that. But basically, if you don't turn the wheel that much, you don't need to cross your hands.
Thank you :)
I've driven for 2 years. I used all the technique. Mostly use #1, #2 for reversing, and #3 if my other hand is occupied
The ''wiping the dishes'' is the best one for manual cars.
@Diego87 Because the other hand should be resting near the stick shift most of the time
@@rosesaintred513 Nah. Unless you got 18 gears or something, nah.
manual car drivers : are we a joke to you ? 😂😂 we can't drive with two hands on manual cars except on the hightway when we don't change gears we always drive with one hand on city
With a manual car, you should still drive with two hands on the wheel, removing one hand only when you change gears, then putting it back on.
@@ConduiteFacile yeah when you are in a big city but believe me in countries like Morocco we always drive with one hand because the roads are small and the cities are not that big and busy
Your videos are amazingly helpful, I love how you show visuals of how things can go wrong to make us understand better. Keep it up
