Wow. I just had a big DOH moment. How on earth did it not occur to me to use the decorative stitches for quilting small things. Goodness. I can't wait to get started. So cute!
I am late to the party but loved your video! I made a simple cover for my 2025 journal but plan to make a pieced quilt as you go later. Great directions!
Thank for clear and uncomplicated tutorials. I like that you are to the point and don’t over word it!!! I also like that you do speak and don’t the printed words and/ or music thing all the time. I feel that voices help with the connecting with your viewers. I found your site midway through the pandemic. At a time when the only contact I had was through tutorials. Thank you for your wonderful ideas!!! I really love 💕 them.
I will definately do this, thank you. I love the idea of using the stitches you have never used on your sewing machine before! So much sewing to do but going to put it all on hold to do this!
Thank you for this tutorial! The covers are pretty, but look easy to sew and great for using up scraps. I love that you don't have binding- it's a cleaner look and less bulky around the edges. I'll be flying to visit family and I think I'll make myself one to cover a book to carry in my backpack!❤❤❤
Made two and they turned out great! I'm going on a short vacation and couldn't decide which book to take, so I had to make two.😆 Thanks for this great tutorial!!
Kristen, I am "binging" my way through your videos. This is such a great idea and I need to make these for birthday presents this year for all the great grand kids (I'm up to seven now). They can have journals to match the quilts they got last year. Thanks
Fabulous design. Great tutorial. Thank you so much! Happy thoughts! :) Absolutely love watching this video! Never thought to use decorative stitches in this way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this video.
Hi Kristen, I am working on a cover as a gift for a friend and am loving how it is turning out. I also have some "fancy" stitches I never use on my machine and have been having a great time. My sewing spot looks like a disaster but who cares!!! Best and most creative journal cover hands down. Thank you.
Wow, thanks heaps for that fantastic tutorial! 🤩 I’ve watched several, and this is by far and away the best one, and the wonky scrubby fabric quilt as you go is just perfect ❤ I’m now going to watch loads of your other videos while making 2 makeup bags before I hit the A5 book cover making session for the books I received today ….. hopefully I’ll have finished everything before the Xmas market on Saturday!! 😅😮😱🤭🎄🧑🎄🌟✨🥰😘 Happy holidays to you and all your community (of which I am now a part of 😁) xxxxx
Hello, my daughter and I just watched your video and we love your journals! Thank you so much for showing us how you make your beautiful art! We love your channel and are subscribed now! ❤🌷
This is delicious!! A junk Journal cover outta this would be great!! I would like to make some small padded appliques in this style or do sewing in slow stitching to put on clothing to spruce it up. I would also like to do a tiny quilt tree skirt or Christmas stockings to fill with gifts. Namesta🐞
Love this project! Yes, I’m coming over from Sew Becca and have decided to track my eating, exercise and wellness. Thank for kicking off the new year with personal accountability and sewing Fun!
So happy to have discovered your channel (instant subscriber). You explain things so clearly. Your voice-overs are excellent. Very much appreciate your time and effort on these videos. Thank you!
Ditto! Very well said!!!!! ❤ With my illness, and still recovering from paralysis, I can’t always sew so I love watching others sew & make pretty creations!! Some days I have about 50% function in my legs, and others I have about 20% ability. But yes I just made myself a new subscriber to her channel too❤
Love it! You are just 1 step away from junk journaling! My fave quilted item to get or to give is a table runner and/or hot pads. Loved this vid, my 2 fav hobbies are quilting and junk journaling.
Yeah! Glad we could meet in the middle of your two passions here! Good shout on the hot pads too! I have some of that insul bright stuff around here somewhere….
I love journal making, it is a true passion. These ideas rock and you have a wonderful sense of style. I have a journal Bible to cover for my granddaughter, and this is what I think would really be nice. Thank you for always giving such great ideas.
I love your tutorials! I watched this a bit ago and decided I will make several. My first is for a Santa Swap in a group I'm in. I've taken a chunk of crumb fabric that I made to accomplish this one. Next few I hope to employ my embroidery machine to create more personalized covers. Thanks again!
I really like this. This was a well put together and comprehensive tutorial. In addition to journal covers, now that you taught us how to measure for any size, I would like to make one for my church Missal. For the journals, I have lots of fabric but it would also be fun to use old clothing that can't be donated as is and purchasing buttons or elastic and fix to would donate them but would be time consuming and expensive expensive. I do save buttons off any clothes that are worn out. Love the artistic scrappy look and the ties.
I have just stumbled across your channel , great work and simplest journal cover ever shown . Wondering where you are in the world , can't detect accent . Have also downloaded scrappy x pattern. Many thanks . Lorraine in Oz
@@ScrapFabricLove nice to hear from you, my screen was showing Edinburgh and I thought you sound Canadian, mystery solved. I look forward to catching up on all of your video's, after work this week. xx
I would opt for one change. Make the lining piece shorter, about 2" shorter, so that it goes under the sleeve, but doesn't reach to the left/right sides completely. Then turn RSO through one of those sides, they will be under the sleeves, so they don't need to be finished AND you don't have an external seam left to turn under at all.
I have been looking for a gift idea to give a couple of friends and this fits my ideas perfectly. Thank you for your video. I have one quick question though, when you start piecing on to the bedding, do you have another piece of fabric underneath the batting? It goes through the machine without this fabric nicely especially with a decorative stitches? In other words you’re not making a quilt sandwich?
No not making a 3 layer sandwich. Just the scraps on the batting and then adding the backing at the end so we can still flip it right side out and stitch it closed. If you did the backing at the same time as the rest then you would need to add an outer binding to cover the raw edges if you see what I mean.
I am a novice sewer and ive NEVER quilted before... Can i just use a straight stitch? And can i just... whack the fabric onto the batting any which way?
Yes you can use a straight stitch for sure! There is a technical top and bottom to batting but most people don’t pay too much attention to it and for a journal cover it doesn’t matter so don’t worry about it!
I think I was probably sewing on my Bernina 770QE for that video but I have since traded it in (I have a video about why). I am now using a Pfaff Quilt Expression 720. I am by no means a sewing machine expert though!
Glad you liked it! I’m afraid I don’t quite know what you mean about the saving. As far as I know you can click the 3 dots on anyone’s RUclips video and save it to watch later and then you can find it in your RUclips watch later list. I don’t know of any other way to do it.
you can slow the video down as much as you want to. Just click on the settings icon at the bottom right. The voice will be odd, but then you get the pictures as slow as you may need. I can follow Kristen easily, but I still sometimes slow the video down so I can catch the details. Don't give up! It's totally worth the effort!
What's your favourite quick and easy quilted gift? These are definitely my current favourite but I'm always looking for more!
This is one of the better tutorials for making a journal cover.
Thank you!

1/4” seam allowance for everything in this project.

Not sure what I used in that video - possibly a Bernina but now I have a Pfaff Quilt Expression 720 and a Janome 1600p
