  • We have a new way to engrave! The Tormach Drag Knife engraver (link below) let's us engrave 30x as fast! We ran this demo at 60IPM (versus our usual 2IPM with a ball end mill!)
    What's the catch? The drag knife leaves a burr. But let's use the SuperFly to clean that burr off by machining a few thou over top the part! Boom!
    We were incredibly happy with how this part turned out. It's a great example of how much you can do in a home shop - both CNC machining and powder coating to make a great product! Fusion360 handles the CAD and CAM and we used the website fiverr.com to have the logo converted to a DXF file for only $11!

    One of the things I like about all your videos John is that you just jump in with both feet and take us with you. You make mistakes and say something. If you don't know something while you are doing an operation, you say something. Your not perfect and will admit it. We all see and learn from your mistakes and it is not a big deal to you. That is what I like to see.
    I downloaded Fusion360 the other day and didn't watch the tutorial, I just jumped in and am slowly figuring it out. If I mess up, big deal, learn from it.
    I also like the "what if" ideas you have. If it works, great, if it doesn't, oh well. But you share it and we all get something from it. Nothing is by the book, throw it out there and run with it.
    This makes your videos real and I like that.
    Thanks!

    Great result John. I'd never really thought about it before, but now I see the difference I like the way you're explaining each step as you're doing it in F360. I'd completely forgotten about the left-right, right-left highlighting difference until you mentioned it. I am also a big fan of powder coating. Looking forward to the video on the tapping arm.

    I love your enthusiasm..! I watch every video on CNC that I can find. I am a "gear head".....long life mechanical guy who is in the process of conceiving a CNC machine. I am an Industrial Mechanical and have been around maintenance and automation all my life. I have become fascinated with CNC programming and the electrical side of CNC. It is going to be my first retirement project. I am confident in my ability to design a rigid and true machine. The automation is where I am going to be challenged. Keep up the great videos.....I will be checking in and hopefully using you as a resource. Cheers..!

    Nice! Speaking of crashing brand new tools... I just bought a brand new Haimer ($425 bucks) and the very first time I put it in my mill, I wasn't thinking and hit "go to zero". The vise crashed into the Haimer. I'm very new to CNC but no excuses: I am a dumbass. Luckily my feed rate was very low and I hit the e-stop before it was destroyed. There's a nice battle scar in the housing but thankfully it is still totally accurate. Learning to CNC has been one of my most humbling experiences.

    John, you should think for Xmas making a looping Flex-Arm tapping video that is just 20 minutes of looping tapping that we can put on the TV ala the old "Yule Log" video. I could watch you tap holes all day long with that thing. Also, thanks for the earlier power coat vid you did.. after seeing how easy it was I bought a rig myself and I powder coat EVERYTHING now.

    As always, love the videos and the sharing of knowledge. Your disposition is refreshing too. However I am confused by the change.
    In the first of the video, you make a statement about having to step outside your comfort zone. Then you state your intent. Create the correct size stock. Powder coat it. All in house.
    Then you pay somebody to clean up the image prior! Wt(f)? 11 bucks is an insignificant amount in the long run or it could be a much better opportunity to profit.
    I remember taking a BobCad V23 training class many years ago (my very first foray into CAD or CAM, I had a working machine I had built but had no idea how to make it move!). Anyway the instructor showed us how to take black and white images and manipulate them to engrave different depths in an opaquish material (Corian) so when backlit it made a perfect copy of the original picture. Sorry for being so long winded but it is most likely as simple as selecting the entire font and making 1 change.

    • @BigMjolnir
      @BigMjolnir 9 лет назад

      I could almost feel the brakes being applied as you fought to slow down this time...thank you for the effort! Personally it's not so much the speed as the skipping over the 'why'. I suspect that lots of folks have drafting or traditional CAD experience with things like AutoCAD or TurboCAD, but parametric modeling is different. I've been playing with Cubify to learn about it, and have found the thought processes to be very different. I think it's a big improvement, but it is different. When you get into the CAM parts you explain some, but when you are concentrating on getting it done, sometimes that slips. I still learn, but sometimes it rakes a few videos to get all the puzzle pieces....which is ok, I like the videos!
      Speaking of Tom Lipton, I was reading his book when you did your review of it, and it was you mentioning that he had a RUclips channel that led me to it, and then Adam's, the Kieths, and the whole crowd...thank you for that!

    • @stephenross4333
      @stephenross4333 3 года назад

      It's not the speed of the video per se. It's that many videos are made assuming the audience already knows how to use 360. The video author often uses shortcuts or is doing things (right click, selecting x) without saying what they're doing. I found one video that's doing exactly what I'm trying to do (simple, single line engraving), but he's skipping steps when he does it. I've watched the video at 1/4 speed, but still can't figure out how to do it. There are a LOT of detailed CAM settings and software specs that you guys know, but take for granted. I'm pretty computer literate and have used some graphic software, but I'm lost trying to figure this out. I'm pretty close to returning my CNC machine and giving up.

    Great video! The link function is new to Fusion 360. Because you inserted the script file from another file it creates a reference. If you change the referenced file there would be a notice to update the file in this design. That's why you couldn't delete the unwanted text without breaking the link (or reference) back to the original.

    • @colinsmith1410

    Hi John
    Really liked the video and I have to agree with slowing down a bit with Fusion 360 I have just started using it because of seeing you use it on your channel and how excited you get when using it. I think that there will be allot more of us newbies because we watch you using it so please be patient. I expect there will be many like myself that have wanted to do some CAD but could not justify spending a ton of money.
    Fusion 360 has given us the opportunity to have a crack at it and hats off to the creators looking forward to using it more and more.
    I do have one question if you dimension a part and want to see all the dimensions and maybe print a copy I seem to loose everything may be you could do a video on how to do that at some point.
    Keep them coming

    Curiosity question. After you do the initial powder coating, baking and engraving, would it work to use powder coat in a different color just to do the part that was newly exposed by the engraving?
    Nice end result.

    • @BigMjolnir
      @BigMjolnir 9 лет назад

      I've seen similar tricks done with wood, but the lines were deeper. I've done it myself for signs using a V bit. After cutting the letters I sprayed the whole thing, then sanded it off the surface, leaving the letters painted.
      I've also seen it done differently with powder coat using a laser cutter. The object was laser engraved, then was powder coated and baked, then covered with powder of a different color. Then, rather than baking it, the powder was cooked with the laser just where the letters were, and the rest of the powder blown/washed off. That left the engraved lines filled with the second color. Looked great!

    • @MrDaniell1234
      @MrDaniell1234 9 лет назад

      +BigMjolnir you can do the same with wide green painters tape but the surface needs to be clean and smooth for it to work well, pretty much finished surfaces

    • @BigMjolnir
      @BigMjolnir 9 лет назад

      +NYC CNC Yep, similar idea. The laser and powdercoat trick lets you do pretty fine detail, and you don't *have* to have it engraved first, though you can. All good methods to keep in mind.

    Man, it sucks you couldn't get the 2linc engraver to work. The burr was one thing I could NOT have at all after engraving and I needed to go faster than a BN EM running 10IPM. Mind emailing me what feeds and speeds you tried along with how fast the tormach can rapid?

      +NYC CNC any idea what you're looking to get? I'm in love with the hurco machines I work with daily. they run posted code well and then there's parts that really are faster just programming conversationally. and we're not even running winmax.

    if anyone's worried about slow videos, just use youtube shortcuts!
    shift + > = speed up video
    shift + < = slow down video
    J = skip left
    K = pause
    L = skip right
    F = full screen

    G00 Z3.0; M00; G00 Z.050; G01 Z-.005 F.020; engrave; ....program stops 3.0" above part. quick check with 1-2-3 block and you can instantly tell if you have the right tool. (obviously if all your tools are roughly within 3 inch's of tool heights.) no single block...no dry run....no finger on the e stop. no distance to go screen... quick and easy :)

    I do that maybee at 60 IPM ith 1/8 ball nose or at 100IPM with a 30 degré v-bit 1/4

    pro tip : when selecting items when you do a right to left or a left to right notice the marquee box, the boundry edge around the box, it changes depending on function, dashed is select all, solid line is only select items fully encased by selection box. Boom! And bobs yer uncle! :D www.dbclunie.com

    STOP paying someone to make dxf files. It is very easy and quick. There are many different software options to auto trace graphic files (raster to vector). My favorite is simply Corel Trace which is part of Corel Draw. It takes literally about 1 minute to generate a dxf. I believe there are some freeware/shareware programs out there too.
