Da Squirrel I beg to differ. Sonic Youth’s influence is undeniable. They opened the doors for bands to include noise, avant-garde, peculiar tunings, experimental tendencies and do it with a slight feminist edge while having a female co front. And do it flirting with the mainstream in a way DJ never did. Daydream Nation is considered the best album out of the 80’s by many critics and music publications. In the 90’s they headlined festivals. That tells you the reach and influence.
Da Squirrel I don’t know about “gimmicky” but they did settle on a style but then again so did Dino. I love post reunion Dino but there is a formula J is not moving away from. Same w Osbourne’s songwriting. Mascis and Moore did go into more acoustic territory and then into darker stuff with side projects in the last decade but they still sound like themselves.
@@AllTheCoolNamesAreTaken84 This song is about his father dying, and Lou (and Murph) were not in the band at the time. This might have been the first time Lou and Murph played this song with J. It's up to him how into it he wants to get.

J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) along with their crews should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They have been eligible since 2011.
One of the few 90's-era singers whose voice has stood the test of time. There's much to be said for writing songs in a sensible register and not screaming your face off
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Lou's skills. Dunno the time frame of this performance - but considering it wasn't his original input - damn. But then I'm always blown away by these three in different ways every time i hear them.
first Dinosaur Jr song i ever heard when my buddy brought over Where you been back in the day , the sound, the tone, Js licks,,, ive never been sold on a band immediatley like when i first heard Out There...been a near 30 year longtime loyal fan, ill see them ANYTIME they play my area...
I just saw them live in March. Salt Lake City, Utah and it was amazing. They even played one of my biligerant drunken requests. In a jar. Whole show was incredible!
Where You Been is up there with Siamese Dream as the best alternative rock album of the early 90s--the genre of rock ever. And, yes, I am considering Nevermind.
@@cactaceous Lol how is credibility lost!? Listen just because hating on billy corgan is trendy, doesnt mean you can discount how amazing and influential those first three (four if you count picese) albums are. Siamese Dream is absolutely a flawless album and certainly belongs among the best. To that end I would agree to throw in some pavement and others.
This is an *awesome* take of a great song, but dammit, couldn't they have set up the shot of J to face him and include his guitar playing? As a guitarist, one of my biggest pet peeves with videoed performances is when a director doesn't include the guitar in shots and just zooms in on their face and there isn't a single effin' shot of the fingerwork here. UGH.
100% this. Blistering intro guitar line? Let's use that time to slowly fade in from black to an arty abstract shot of a light. And then for the vast majority of the camera angle choices you'd be forgiven for thinking J was just singing and doing NOTHING WITH HIS HANDS.
Same. I don't play the guitar but it's nice to see them actually play the song. The same for the drums anytime there's a good fill i want to see it. They don't get it.
I was so frustrated that i couldn't go see them here in Sao Paulo, cause it was so crowded and full in the converse concert... but this session comforts me, fucking great sound! Thanks a lot.
Where You Been is a killer album. Murph’s drumming in particular is outstanding. Like someone else pointed out, it’s great to hear these songs with what Lou brings to the table.
Having seen them live a decade after this performance was posted, I can assure you they still sound this good. Go and see them if you have the chance !
It's really nice to see Dinosaur Jr cover a J Mascis song. ^_^ Back when I was a kid this was my fav song....I didn't know what was going on...or who Dinosaur really was. Thank the maker that the three of them came back together. Every album from Beyond on has been great and I have such deep ties to each album going forward. Best New/Old band ever.
J’s voice had to grown on me but right from the beginning when I found them a few weeks ago I always thought the riffs were cool as hell and they had a good rhythm section, underrated band for sure
Dinosaur Jr should be in the rock n roll Hall of fame
Indeed. Inducted by Henry Rollins and J’s acceptance speech would be “thanks a lot”.
U said it👍 that's a a 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐speech 😁
If Sonic Youth is not in there, no way Dinosaur is getting in there. Bullshit parlor of stuffy old farts anyways.

J. Mascis....my personal opinion, the greatest guitarist of the 90's and one of the best ever.
best guitarist of the late eighties too!
John Petrucci?
@@groblezep5548 lol no

Yes! But also kim thayhill!

He’s reading the lyrics

I loved that too. Musical insanity and J. just being caj…
I'm always amazed at how he manages to play those guitar parts whilst singing. Impeccable sense of timing.
it is madness
I think the fact that he was originally a drummer gives him a significant advantage.
also handling countless guitar pedals at the same time , the guy's amazing

What an awesome thing to share with your mom. I'm sorry you lost her. I think she's still enjoying it with you.

Dinousaur, and in particular this song, got me through my brother dying. You've always got the music to come back to. take care man!

well, J, Murphy and Barlow: such a perfect chemistry
This version is mindblowing, that intro oh my god...
J's voice and guitar soloing are like Neil Young gone punk rock.
Holy Christ those guys can play.
Yeah they played for over 30 years
This version sounds so much more right with Lou and Murph on it, that Barlow thump can't be replicated.
One of the greatest rhythmic sections ever!

Would it kill the cameraman to show his hands on the guitar? he's a revered guitarist. you got to show that shit
+firstofficerspock311 The "Crumble" video of these sessions is even worse, for this. :/
+manueldelsol12 Yes it was rather odd they did that
Ah ah, plus I was trying to figure out how he played some solo parts of the song. Hopefully I found a guy doing tutorial covers !
Cameraman was thinking, "I'll just film the back of the neck instead of the fret board".
Ongo Gablogian also let's give plenty of screentime to his dope hat instead of the fretboard
This version has such a great bounce to it. Takes away some of the melancholy of the original but turns it into a such a great jam.

Blue Greenface right, the riff like sets the tone for like some strange ass alien type shit yanno?

This is my new favorite song.
Lou looks so cool playing bass!
I came back to this performance yet again, specifically to hear that awesome lick at 2:36. Fucking mega.
Tone tone tone 😩😩 love that bass sound !!
a lot of the songs without lou were great, but they’re greater with him.
Best live recording of this song I've ever heard!
