They were definitely not “the” gateway to grunge. If anything the musicians in that scene credit Melvins WAY more. Doesn’t mean anything with regards to SY’s legacy. It would just be like saying Peter, Paul, and Mary were the gateway to nu metal.
Shelley was the rock solid foundation that kept the delicious chaos and noise grounded. His parts are also creative. My drumming learned a lot from his. It's the little things like those open hats on the one during the outtro on Incinerate.
The bridge section of this song at 3:05 in when Thurston bangs the guitar and then plays this tremendous crescendo that peaks with him up-picking hard and then slamming a power chord while simultaneously turning around and getting some squealy feedback and then turning back around and playing behind the bridge... that is almost Hendrix or Townshend rock guitar god playbook level.
The dueling guitar solos at 3:05 punch SO much harder in this performance than in the album version. It's much more powerful and frantic, and kind of makes me wish the original matched the intensity captured here.
I’m so incredibly sad I didn’t get into them quicker but still happy to have found them. I remember in high school a kid in my class was wearing a sonic youth shirt, I being unaware of the band I ended up asking if it was a movie. My history teacher and him started laughing they had a good 30 difference between them, so that let me know that their sound spoke to a lot of different people no matter generation. As a fan of them now, I reflect on that memory as for telling the many nights crying and listening to the songs before my time; knowing both the student and my teacher must have years before me.
I was 17 when I saw them as well. When they toured a thousand leaves. What a fantastic memory. Sitting in the rafters of the stadium. . The sounds washing over all of us.
I listened Sonic Youth from 2018 and of course I'm a new fan of them. And this song is the first introduction for me to diggin' more discographies of them.
I know this is said about so much music but that guitar harmony refrain they roll out throughout the song has to be one of the most beautiful guitar concoctions of the last 30 years, regardless of where this song stands in their oeuvre, that guitar refrain at least is fucking incredible, unimpeachable, genius, unnecessary chops confirmation, strutting gangsta leaning perfection *Fassbender perfection meme*
I didn't care much about SY in the 1990s (of course I liked several songs) but I fell for Rather Ripped the moment it came out. And I never got tired of it
It's a band that spans more than a generation, but when I heard it for the first time, my head panicked, but it's a pleasant music. I want you to come to Japan again.
It’s really insane that one of Sonic Youth’s best songs came near the tail end of their run. They’re that kind of timeless band.
All their songs are amazing , thats why they are so timeless ! Its not for nothing they gave birth to a New era in Rock (grunge era)
That whole album is a miracle.
Seen them live about 20 times and was never let down once.
They were definitely not “the” gateway to grunge. If anything the musicians in that scene credit Melvins WAY more. Doesn’t mean anything with regards to SY’s legacy. It would just be like saying Peter, Paul, and Mary were the gateway to nu metal.
You crazy. They have so many incredible songs. Nothing like them.

Cuts through the mix but doesn’t overpower anyone, such finesse.
A lot of it is the (13") zildjian k mastersound hi hats. He chose well because they need an airbrushed, dirty sound on top of their guitar walls.

Testament to truly mastering this song, holy fuck, this guy nails every note in just the right time.
Such sick skill! Awesome.
yes yes yes
That way that everything comes together at 3:50 makes me shiver everytime
If this isn't 1 of the coolest guitar riffs you ever heard!
I think you can just tune to drop D and play the main riff on the G string
Then what?
Kim's headshake is all ready legendary
For real she looks so fuckin cool. All in, feeling the shit out of the song

The most Youthful and energetic band that you will see. Age does not hold meaning for them.
one could say theyre sonic youth
this was recorded 14 years before your comment, which is the same distance in time between Dirty and Rather Ripped
Sonic Eternal Youth
That guitar tone though
Some other worldly stuff, especially on that riff
came here to comment exactly this.
Its mainly because the tuning

Hey! It’s the bassman from Pavement! Love these guys to death!
Double bass madness ! ❤
Love how Lee, Kim, and Thurston are all kind of doing their own version of rocking back and forth on their feet while playing. :D
That guitar is so eloquently distorted and pretty. Makes me wanna cry. It speaks beautiful volumes.
