Today I rode my bike around the neighborhood at 6 am, listening to an entire playlist by this band and I felt good for the first time in years. Thank you for bringing me joy, even if it's just a little bit.
I'm a guitar player since age 11 and sonic youth is at the top of my admired guitar playing...the tuning, cadence, chord progressions everything one of the hardest bands to cover/ duplicate. Love me sonic youth forever 🤘
Love how one guitar is panned to the left and one to the right, and each plays it's own lines which are different but interweaving. I love the guitar on the left... how it's so sparce and a little sloppy, almost on purpose to give the song it's moody sound and feel. Great song.
Sonic Youth did that a lot during production, Thurston Moore on one side and Lee Reynoldo on the other, because both were incredible and doing so allowed the band to showcase each talent individually whilst allowing both individual (i.e. NOT IDENTICAL) lines to play off/ merge with each other, which was a big, if not always obvious, part of the genius behind Sonic Youth's sound.
If you like interweaving guitars (not so much in mix but style of play) check out Television's Marquee Moon with Verlaine and Lloyd switching between lead and rhythm (but less traditional in their case). They set the ground work for many bands that followed.
Creative lyrics that strike you and a melody with so sensitive and fragile guitar riffs always put tears into my eyes and are the reasons why I consider this song as one of the greatest masterpiece of music history. Even I'm not a number one fan of Sonic Youth, I always come back here, year after year. And I will do it as long as I live.
This is such a great album, especially for a band late in their career. Jams Run Free also has a simple riff yet so emotional. It's more about the texture around the riff, which then becomes the cherry on top.
This is the type of music that makes you feel young forever - the song is a classic and it will inspire generations throughout time to experience immortality. Such is the effect of a classic ❤
