    Just a heads up for folks looking to read more into Philodendron and are meeting those gatekeeping portals, copy the link into scihub.wikicn.top/ and you'll get instant free access!
    Also, if you message the authors- theyll likely send you it for free as they don't make any money from those portals and are usually a little irked by their existence 👄

    Love this! It is nice to hear a little bit more than just the grow and care guide. Also a nice tidbit is that most thermogenic species generate the heat to volitalise compounds (aka. produce scent which attracts the pollinators). Some species like T. bipinnatifidum are more stable in heat production and keep it relatively high, whilst species such as M. obliqua can only generate around 1-2C. Very interesting subject. The heat production essentially means taking a portion of the electrons meant for ATP (energy the plant uses) and diverts it as a source of heat. This is why you want to remove a flower before it reaches maturity if your plant is not doing well or is small, because the flower saps energy.

      So... I bought a giant rojo Congo for not a lot of money which should have sounded alarm bells 🙄 but I thought it was my lucky day. Same thing with a birkins from a different nursery.
      They both have spots (looks like someone had bleach on they’re fingers and just flicked flicked it on them. The new leaves came in clean so I thought it was okay. The new leaves have the same spots now and a neighboring philo is developing the same spots.
      What can I do to save them?
      I plan to cut them down, save the cleanest leaf to propagate, wipe it down with oregano oil as the is a strong anti fungal oil. Obviously quarantine them away from my other philos... what else would you recommend?!
      Could this be why my indoor allergies are worse this season!?
      Happy Sunday, thank you for reading and any advice you have to give, much appreciated 💚🍀

    idk if anyone else is interested in this, but philo/philia in ancient greek is kind of more like the sense of love for close friends, as opposed to eros (desire) or agape (self-sacrificing love). i think it’s beautiful that they had multiple ways of conceptualizing love :-)

    Hey Pam! I loved this video! As someone who has previously published papers to academic sites like the one shown in your video I would like to let you in on a little “trick”.
    Most of those sites give $0 to the authors of those papers. So if you’re interested in getting ahold of a paper for free you can normally email the author, who probably has a copy, and they’ll send it over to you for you to check out.
    I know some papers are a bit more historical and it isn’t this easy. Just thought I’d share that with you! 😊

    Girl I learned so many great terms in this video! I always called the cataphil the sheath lol. So did they reclassify all of the Philodendrons like the Selloum? I have a Shangri La that I got from The Plant Farm awhile back and I've had a difficult time finding much info on it. So now I'm curious if it's a Philodendron or a Thomatyphyllum or however it's spelled. Like you I'm a laymen nerd and trying to learn as much as I can about my plants. Btw I've miss you and the plant community, been a rough year I know for everyone but I went back to school as well and just haven't had the time for YT, gonna spend this time before classes start back to get caught up on all the planty goodness.

    • @PamsPrettyPlants
      @PamsPrettyPlants  3 года назад +1

      That is an excellent question! I know the Shangri La is a hybrid of plants that, by all I can gather, would have been in that Meconostigma reclassification. I couldn't find anything just now to confirm it but I'll keep an eye out for a list of the Meconostigma phils so we know which ones are now thams.

      Written differently it can mean leaf (-> φύλλο/ phyllo).
      In this case the name "φιλόδεντρο" refers to the plant's habit to climb up on trees (-> φίλος/ filos, i.e. "friend"), or "loving trees", freely translated. Same thing goes for "philosophy", "philology", but also "hydrophily", etc.
      Fun fact: Here in Germany we also call it "Baumfreund" (i.e "tree friend")!
