I saw Paul in Coachella more than a few years ago which happened to be the anniversary of Linda’s passing. Paul said that the song now takes on a new meaning for him and dedicated it to Linda. Paul choked up a few times in places while singing the Long and Winding Road... What a night that was...
The naked version of this song is beautiful. I'm not fond of the orchestra version but the naked one (on the album, let it be naked) is so sombre and slightly jazzy. I love it
It's funny how people can disagree. I hate George's Leslie'd guitar chords being so prominent in the mix of the Naked version. I hate that Wings-y instrumental part. It completely contradicts the spirit of the song. (And I love Billy Preston). I just don't believe the Beatles did this song justice. Some of Paul's solo performances are better.
This has nothing to do with the video but it does about Paul. My daughter is a Nirvana fan and her favorite Beatle is Paul. I remember when they performed cut me some slack on TV. my daughter said my favorite band and my favorite Beatle. It is funny to look in her room to see pictures of Nirvana Coldplay Marilyn Manson hand on the wall right next to her pillow a picture of Paul.
Maybe she just has a great ear for music. Nirvana's songwriting is really top notch. Cobain was such a great melody writer. I think he would of done so many solo songs later in life and sold hundreds of millions of singles. He was a huge Beatles fan and I am sure their music influenced him and developed his ear from when he was young. Any composer who is classically trained will tell you Lennon and Cobain drew so many comparisons in how they wrote their melodies, voice leading and harmony. Cobain must of been in so much pain and misery to kill himself like that. I never understood his death because he had access to private drug rehabilitation ect. I love it too. No one really had a problem with it until it became more widely known that McCartney didn’t like it. I guess they feel that, “well, if Paul says it’s bad, then it must be”.
As a songwriter myself, albeit unknown, I can tell you that songwriters have it in their minds how they want the song to sound. In a band you always have to give your bandmates some leeway. You can't dictate every instrument note for note without bruising some egos, but even then there are frequently bits that you do want to match what you hear in your head. But this is different. You've recorded the song the way you want it and then some guy comes in the studio who has never been associated with you or the band and transforms your song into something else entirely without even consulting you. I don't know any musician who would be OK with that.
@@cocoaman1564 I would prefer the anthology version if I want it without the Spector treatment, because I think the Naked version has a very dated sound to it.
I remember hearing this song in Yesterday. I’ve heard of the title but never bothered to listen the song. And in the movie there wasn’t an orchestra so just him and a piano. But the words and the way it was sung was more than enough for me to love this song. Then I put on their album 1, I let it play The Long and Winding Road instead of pausing it after Let It Be. And I would say that he was one of the most beautiful musical moments in my life. Thanks for the video Mr. Hobbs
@Luke I always get depressed while listening to this song, yet at the same time I feel that my soul is cleansed, and that makes me happy. It's amazing how he does that.

Being the composer, it’s well within Paul's rights to bitch about the "Specterized" version on the album but honestly that's the version I'm used to and that's the version I like. I think the soaring orchestra and choir suits the song very well. The stripped down version on the Naked album...meh.
I agree. That “over the top” arrangement is what made it a real tearjerker, and one of their biggest hits. C’mon, that instrumental break is absolutely gorgeous.
I love the Naked Version's vocals but I love it if it had the strings and choirs from the 1970 album version making the song more somber like what the lyrics display
@@abbeghinger438 I mean that the vocals on The Long and Winding Road (naked version) is better than the one on the Let It Be (1970). I think it would have been better if they used that take of the vocals and then added the strings and choirs.

I really enjoy these because I allways considered myself an authority on The Beatles..and I am allways watching these videos thinking "I just didnt know any of that"..great research you do sir! Best regards from the UK !
I'm sure there is other thing Paul hated about Phil's arrangement. The last "leave me to your door" is in C minor. Spector made orchestra play Eb instead.
I read somewhere aswell that Paul was very unhappy with Johns bass playing on the recording and he wanted to remove it and record one himself but he was denied. Johns playing on it is off beat and he plays the wrong notes at times too
Stop mindlessly regurgitating the insidious myth that John Lennons’ bass playing on this song is terrible! Go and listen to it, it’s great! He’s playing a fender six string and his part is beautiful and unorthodox, intuitive and creative, everything we love about the Beatles.
I'm more of a McCartney fan than a Lennon fan, but I would agree. Lennon's bass playing here is not as bad as others say. The notes he played are actually good. Quite melodic really.
Fantastic video, all the history of this song , is Paul , I have been a dedicated fan from the first time they played, they are the best, perfect, innovative band ever, they are my favorite, but I do lean to John , his writing, singing, life, beliefs, John will be forever number one thank you for this video, perfect in every way , Steve
I’ve always considered that the 2 iconic elements that represent the big goodbye to the 60s rock scene (the greatest era in rock history) are: Jimi Hendrix playing Villanova Junction in Woodstock 69, while people started to go back home, and release of The Long and Winding Road in 1970.
I prefer "The Long and Winding Road" version from the "Let It Be" movie over the album/single release. When I first heard it in '69 I thought the strings & production were drowning out Paul's vocal. It definitely sounds much better naked with just Paul & Beatle instrumentation only.
Paul had every right to decide how his song was to be produced for it's release. IRONICALLY, all the modifications that Phil Spector added in the post (over)production, that Paul hated, such as strings, harp, horn section, & female choir, Paul recorded this song for Give My Regards To Broad Street with the SAME exact over-production, if not more, as Spector did, ....very interesting. Maybe Paulie DID like Spector's production, but was too proud to admit. Just A Thought.
I actually think the Spector version is beautiful, but yes, i agree with Paul that the volumes are too high and should of been lowered. You can hear Paul's voice getting drowned out in certain parts.
Hey HollyhoBs, great vid as usual. Question do you like the Let It Be Naked version of Across The Universe or the original?'Personally I love what Phil Spector did to it
That comment of Paul's re:Ray Charles/putting yourself in a specific headspace/attitude is one I'd never heard, so thanks for that :) I've never thought to put it into words, but it's ABSOLUTELY a thing and it really does work. I usually just watch these videos for pure Beatles bliss (sorta like pop culture porn) because i rarely hear something i didn't already know, if that makes sense? But your love for them and your thoughtful presentation are a contribution all their own that makes this channel so enjoyable. I'm just excited to also have genuinely had my mind expanded too :)
What a guy...even with all the "stardom" he is always a fun loving guy no excentric lifestyle. I admire him as much as i looked up to him in the 60's as larger than life person...he was a Beatle!! electricityin the air and the Beatlers where there amongst it riding the crest..thanks for the ride Paul...or is it paul? just another day in the life
It’s funny how the Beatles, mostly Paul, would write a particular song with a musical artist in-mind & then that artist would cover that song without knowing that Paul wrote it with them in-mind. Ray Charles, Joe Crocker, Hendrix
The only thing I’d say is the naked version was actually re-recorded 5 days *after* and Lennon corrected his bass blunders (which Spector had to hide with the orchestra)
I find songwriting very cathartic...sometimes I don't even realise what I'm trying to convey but I might listen to a certain song a while later and realise " ahh..that's what that songs about "... it's help me so much over the years and probably saved me money on shrinks ....I'd recommend it to anyone ...you only have to learn a few chords ..you don't have to be a virtuoso...just start strumming and let your mind flow

I noticed that the first time I heard the naked version (which was yesterday lmfao) and I’m kind of confused. Maybe Phil used a different take? Edit: or maybe the naked version is the one Paul recorded later
If you listen to the version of this song from the Let it Be movie, during the instrumental Paul is literally singing the bass part he wants John to play.
As a long time beatle fan, born August 1962 in England,I have listened ,read and watched a great deal about the band.To be honest with time and my changing tastes and changing situation in the world,I have become much more critical of the Beatles and find there is alot of their music that I no longer enjoy.I think I may have become over exposed to the music and find some of it stale.
I don't mind the Spector version of the album, but Naked works so much better.
Best Beatles channel on RUclips! ...and one of the greatest episodes.
Cocker.
Hendrix?
The only thing I’d say is the naked version was actually re-recorded 5 days *after* and Lennon corrected his bass blunders (which Spector had to hide with the orchestra)
I find songwriting very cathartic...sometimes I don't even realise what I'm trying to convey but I might listen to a certain song a while later and realise " ahh..that's what that songs about "... it's help me so much over the years and probably saved me money on shrinks ....I'd recommend it to anyone ...you only have to learn a few chords ..you don't have to be a virtuoso...just start strumming and let your mind flow
Dude,
I love you and your channel. God Bless.
I love your videos, man. You really honor the Beatles in the way you present each story.
Sooooo, interesting! thank you
Your videos are all so great. You always bring unique info to the table and find a way to tie it all your general theme. I always walk away with a new insight on any topic you cover. Keep making quality Beatles content PLEASE 🍏 ✌🏼
Very interesting, at 6 mins 50 the "Scotch of St James" club is off of Jermyn street not Jeremy Street. It is mostly famous for high class mens tailoring!
Thank you for the Debussy as your outro bumper music.
been watching your videos gratefully for a while, realised just now I wasn't even subscribed, so I quickly changed that! keep up the fantastic work

I love the hidden cues in the script that reference the song all through out the video
Thank you for the excellent video. The sentiment expressed in the song title makes it a fitting farewell.
Excellent video thanks.. could you please do a video on the 5th Beatle, George Martin.
All the best to you & your family & all your subscribers for the holiday season !
Merry Christmas
This is my favorite song besides "In my Life" and it's the only thing I can play on the piano! (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
The naked version has a completely different recording for the singing... just saying. Listen to them together.
I noticed that the first time I heard the naked version (which was yesterday lmfao) and I’m kind of confused. Maybe Phil used a different take?
Edit: or maybe the naked version is the one Paul recorded later
Asusual, you deliver. Enormously interesting. Very professional but with enuff fanboy enthusiasm to keep it fun. Thanks again.
Of course, when asked about it, John tries to twist things ´round to be about him and Yoko.
Also, I liked what Spector did with the song.
Yes
John was the leader so it was his greatest achievement.
Masterful use of THAT picture at 8:32
ah Alistair respect & representation! so happy to see it
Yes.

Sometimes I sing it as a prayer to God 💓
That's beautiful ❤
@@theodoretekkers Thank you 💙
Great video! Love the quotes from Paul. Such a thoughtful and sensitive individual.
I have always thought The Beatles was John's projects...
If you listen to the version of this song from the Let it Be movie, during the instrumental Paul is literally singing the bass part he wants John to play.
Very beautiful song by sir paul
As a long time beatle fan, born August 1962 in England,I have listened ,read and watched a great deal about the band.To be honest with time and my changing tastes and changing situation in the world,I have become much more critical of the Beatles and find there is alot of their music that I no longer enjoy.I think I may have become over exposed to the music and find some of it stale.
So imagine my surprise and joy to have found your channel and through which I have through lockdown relistened to all my Beatles collection in date order.I may not like some of their stuff but it all works in context so very well.
Your presentation, enthusiasmand knowledge have been a great joy to me .So heart felt thanks for that.I wish you well in all your future projects.
I have heard some of your music but to honest I haven’t really listened to it yet.Today I have no plans so I shall go and check it out, bottle of wine eyes closed headphones on in my favourite chair.
Thank you for your hard work putting these posts together
Top content
He just so relaxes me, voice and demeanor.
lol
Really love it!
Excellent work!
I realize these videos must take so much time from one s life.
Really really appreciate it!
Jim
John’s bass is horrible, I’m sorry, how could they possibly have let it go as is ?
Oh well, who the hell am I?
Love you Paul
Thankyou HollyHobs!!! I very much enjoy your videos
I think Paul still owns the tiny farmhouse in Scotland @3:00 and he paid about £5,000 for it. This is the house when on a TV show Linda said we lived in a ridiculously tiny Scottish home.
ten interesting facts about the beatles goodnight pls :3
I think a newspaper TAXI. it the morning newspaper delivery truck Slang. In Penny Lane when they sing a the banker never wears a mack in the pouring rain..it mean the banker never wear a Rain Coat.

The Ray Charles vibe actually makes _perfect_ sense to me. I can totally hear it now.
What is your Favourite Beatles album? mine is Magical Mystery Tour!!
Help! is my favorite. Every song is near perfect.
@@duwaynedemmith9981 I totally agree!!👌😃
revolver is mine
Check out “The Long and Winding Road” , on Tripping the Live Fantastic. It is beautiful. Paul was right.
“...being a murderer.” Welp, that’s all I needed! 🤣
Marianne Faithful
