    In critiquing the song I would add that Paul went on holiday to Greece in September 1963 and was so affected by the culture’s music he wanted to add a Greek sounding influence to the song. George Harrison is credited with playing the Bouzouki in the bridge at the end of the song but it was actually John and George who put their capo’s so high on the guitar neck that they were able to emulate the bouzouki sound styled on the two step sound that was used in Zorba the Greek. The song is one of my favorite Beatle songs and proves the versatility of the writing style of Lennon McCartney even though the song is mostly John’s work.

    "Girl" is probably my favorite Beatles song. I was standing in my aunt's garden in Seattle when I heard it for the first time on the neighbor's radio. I was visiting my Seattle relatives so I could see the Beatles on their '66 tour.
    It's always sounded like John's singing drags just a tiny bit, barely keeping up with the music. Maybe that's just me.
    I read that George Martin said it was the first grown up song they wrote. The lyrics have such subtlety and complexity. A whole love story with all its attendant psychological ambiguity hinted at. Hell, you could make a movie based on this song!

    So John says the words were his, based on philosophical ideas he got from a book he had read. This makes sense; it’s entirely his style. Paul can’t have contributed as much as he claims. This seems to be a pattern. Paul claims to be the composer of “In My Life”, recalling how he wrote the melody over half an hour on the Mellotron, inspired by Miracles. A mathematical analysis of the melodic progression shows that it basically can’t possibly have been anyone other than John composing it. It’s his style completely, the use of the minor chords is very specific for him. He would use a similar technique on a bunch of other songs. The Strawberry Fields Forever demos are very notably similar.

    • @beatlecristian
      @beatlecristian 3 года назад +1

      Can you blame Paul? In My Life is one of John’s best songs, with Imagine quite possibly being the worst.

    • @Nerkin610
      @Nerkin610 3 года назад

      Cristian Almanza I can see why he would want to make the claim, but rewriting history and taking the credit when John isn’t alive to defend his work is a low point, if done knowingly. Then again, the active, stressful and hazy years of the 60’s must’ve melted together in their minds. They all confused and forgot things that are crucial to the fans.

      I disagree actually and im definitely more a lennon fan than mccartney but love the beatlescand have always heard this argument. So i actually gave it a go tryin to discern the two since ive listened intently for 20 years and i do think McCartney helped alot with melody but certainly lyrics are all johns. What gave it away for me was the melodic dips that paul seems to use alot more than lennon hence why hes considered the more melodic of two. Take "there are places i remember" and then listen to beginning of here there everywhere. Similar no... or the use of minor major in im looking thru you with same melodic dips like "i thought i knew you" same style. I think lennon just loved his lyrics so much he wanted the whole song to himself. Love him but gotta take everythin with a grain of salt. And srew computers.if they could determine anything bout music then it would be writing hit songs left n right

      @@LearnMusclescom Ostensibly 'Woman' was dedicated to Yoko but musically it sounds like John was missing Paul. During the Double Fantasy sessions, John referred to 'Woman' as the 'Beatle' track. Ironic then that the track its melody resembles is one of John Beatles songs written by Paul. Same thing happened on the Band On The Run track 'Let Me Roll It'. Though they were at loggerheads, Paul stylized the track in the manner of his erstwhile colleague. Consciously or otherwise, they seemed to be signalling each other...

      I think this interpretation/analysis is way over the top, and don't accept all those religious allusions at all. Rather it's a deeply-felt song that expresses an aching longing - something a lot of us can relate to. And I think it's a song that's drenched in life experience from John, who'd already had a hell of an emotional life by then, even though he was still young. I don't accept that he was aching for Yoko, or anyone like her then. That was still to come. He'd lived enough to have known such a love already, which is surely what this song expresses!

    My Mom had a girlfriend who was something called an “English War Bride “, huh?
    Anyway, she lived close with her sisters also and we , me at like 4 years old would visit a lot.
    The ladies would play Yahtzee and laugh and laugh.
    Mind you -
    Height of Beatlemania-
    Shirley, War Bride Moms friend had a teenage niece named Paula who would come to visit Chicago in the summer, bringingParlaphone Beatles albums. Couldn’t read yet, but I knew her record center label was different from mine. lol
    Jimmy Love-
    In my middle class neighborhood was this small bit of British sence and treasure I will forever treasure.
    Her name-Paula is on the back of my Hofner bass, even then I was listening intently.
    Had to share.
    My friends as a kid would laugh in a British accent and say -Yahtzee Virg?, my Mom’s name.
    Everyone always gets a laugh when I speak with a British or Liverpool accent, Wow , how’d you learn that?
    lol
    Paula❤
    Jim

    John composed "Girl" then later composed "Mother" then later still he
    composed "Woman". I wonder, had he lived longer, would he have gotten to Daughter or Wife or maybe Auntie (Mimi)😜

    I like the way you break songs down. Girl happens to be one of my all time favorite Beatle songs. I love John’s voice. Everyone I know thought the breathing was a toke on a joint. I am surprised you didn’t mention the incredible break, which to me sounds like a Russian dirge. The guitars sounding like balalaikas accented by the beautiful cymbal crashes. I never thought about the religious aspects. Great stuff, my friend. Dave

    Thanks for the nice videos. From a guy who still remembers the Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan! All the grownups were talking about how long their hair was. Then came the Stones shortly after and made the Beatles look like Marines. Great times. My sister got the " Rubber Soul " album for Christmas and we listened to it for a while. She loved it and I thought it was OK. I do remember "Girl" as well as a few others being very good songs. But then, I've always been more of a Stones guy. Aftermath, baby!

      I've always thought people who don't like them have some empty parts in their souls, they're kinda mentally ill; it's not like you say:"De gustibus", because The Beatles are sublime, they're beyond taste, same with Queen and Iron Maiden.
