I always thought this album was a turning point in their career. They sounded different. They grew up and matured on this LP. Never again boys singing songs for little girls. This song stands on it's own.
"Girl" is probably my favorite Beatles song. I was standing in my aunt's garden in Seattle when I heard it for the first time on the neighbor's radio. I was visiting my Seattle relatives so I could see the Beatles on their '66 tour. It's always sounded like John's singing drags just a tiny bit, barely keeping up with the music. Maybe that's just me. I read that George Martin said it was the first grown up song they wrote. The lyrics have such subtlety and complexity. A whole love story with all its attendant psychological ambiguity hinted at. Hell, you could make a movie based on this song! Loving all the Beatles clips on RUclips!!! We are truly blessed!
'Girl' was the song that made me turn into a Beatles fan... Until 1966, I thought the Beatles were 'alright'... but when I first heard 'Girl' I had a sort of epiphany; suddenly I knew they were really special...
I have always loved Beatle music, now that I am getting older I understand how far ahead they were intellectually, for their ages. John in particular was very aware of his feelings. They wrote such beautiful music together.
Great breakdown. I have always loved ‘Girl’ The breathing showed exhilaration, pain, any man in love completely understands the many meanings of the lyrics.
In critiquing the song I would add that Paul went on holiday to Greece in September 1963 and was so affected by the culture’s music he wanted to add a Greek sounding influence to the song. George Harrison is credited with playing the Bouzouki in the bridge at the end of the song but it was actually John and George who put their capo’s so high on the guitar neck that they were able to emulate the bouzouki sound styled on the two step sound that was used in Zorba the Greek. The song is one of my favorite Beatle songs and proves the versatility of the writing style of Lennon McCartney even though the song is mostly John’s work.
This song has haunted me my whole life, and I don't even know why. And its opening rendition in Across the Universe still chills me to the bone. Great vid!
I must admit that I found myself crying at the end of the video. Last year, I ended a 10 year relationship that I thought would never fold. It terrified me to think of living my life without her. But it's taken a year now to regroup and revamp who I am. I still miss her as a person and as a dear friend. I cherish those 10 years and look back only with lasting good memories. But I do have someone that I'm suppose to be with in this life. It's taught me to live day by day and embrace whatever good comes my direction. Thank you for reminding us that we're not alone.
"Girl" has always been one of my favorites, reminding me of my quest for that quintessential woman. But of course it had to be as it comes from one of my favorite Beatle albums.

So John says the words were his, based on philosophical ideas he got from a book he had read. This makes sense; it’s entirely his style. Paul can’t have contributed as much as he claims. This seems to be a pattern. Paul claims to be the composer of “In My Life”, recalling how he wrote the melody over half an hour on the Mellotron, inspired by Miracles. A mathematical analysis of the melodic progression shows that it basically can’t possibly have been anyone other than John composing it. It’s his style completely, the use of the minor chords is very specific for him. He would use a similar technique on a bunch of other songs. The Strawberry Fields Forever demos are very notably similar.
Cristian Almanza I can see why he would want to make the claim, but rewriting history and taking the credit when John isn’t alive to defend his work is a low point, if done knowingly. Then again, the active, stressful and hazy years of the 60’s must’ve melted together in their minds. They all confused and forgot things that are crucial to the fans.

So i actually gave it a go tryin to discern the two since ive listened intently for 20 years and i do think McCartney helped alot with melody but certainly lyrics are all johns. What gave it away for me was the melodic dips that paul seems to use alot more than lennon hence why hes considered the more melodic of two. Take "there are places i remember" and then listen to beginning of here there everywhere. Similar no... or the use of minor major in im looking thru you with same melodic dips like "i thought i knew you" same style. Take "there are places i remember" and then listen to beginning of here there everywhere. Similar no... or the use of minor major in im looking thru you with same melodic dips like "i thought i knew you" same style. I think lennon just loved his lyrics so much he wanted the whole song to himself. Love him but gotta take everythin with a grain of salt. And srew computers.if they could determine anything bout music then it would be writing hit songs left n right
I think ur rite end of in my life song sounds that way also
Thanks for this. Lovely notes of inspiration at the end. Thank you.
I appreciate your research and passion during your story telling
I love Rubber Soul and one of my favourite songs is George's If I needed someone to Love his voice was so good in it.
great video as always, i'd love to see one done on "we can work it out" :)
Tit Tit Tit backing vocals and John hittin on a joint, love them boys
Nice ending in this clip.. very inspirational words, thanks
Wow, this was so insightful! 😀 I am a huge Beatles fan and they're my favorite group, and I've never learned the full story behind this song. (I knew about the "tit" part, though! 😅). It's one of my favorites, and I love the breathing part that John "performs". I also love that John's voice isn't buried in the mix or double-tracked. He had a unique and beautiful voice. I wish he didn't hate it so much. Anyway, thank you for expressing your knowledge about this song and for the lovely things you've said at the end. 🙂♥️
Thanks for the sincere pep talk.
Another well conceived, well written, video. Makes me proud to be a Patreon supporter!
I love these videos. Keep doing what you're doing, man. I'd like to see you do an explained video of "The Long and Winding Road."
Another great video. Wonderful message at the end!
Love Girl, but love all the tracks from Rubber Soul which is my favourite Beatles album.
That breath intake definitely sounds like the sound u make when smoking a joint.
I love the album Rubber Soul. I played it to death when i was. Kid, yeah im that old i had it when it was released.
Beautiful sentiment at the end.
It is nice to know the history behind the songs.
Thank you, again. Love the videos.
This song was pivotal for me in modern songwriting expression - the power of this album. Bob Dylan made comment of it in the era..."you guys are finally getting serious" or something like that.
Wow! This morning I thought to myself, HollyHobs should really do a Top 10 about "Girl".
Thank you for reading my thoughts.
I love the depth of your research! Keep it up, man.
When I got my first bass, my older brother said I should listen to some McCartney bass lines.
And THIS was the very first song I ever learned!
You make the BEST videos! Thank you. 🙏💕🙏
