When I was at my peak as a Beatles fan, I sang the praises of John and Paul, but as I got older and more mature, with a better set of priorities, I came to admire George and Ringo more, and they are now clearly my favorites. It was significant to me that, in all my research into The Beatles, I learned of conflicts between all of them, except between George and Ringo. It was also significant to me that I came to appreciate George's music increasingly over the years.
Starting in 1967 I found some pics of George in life magazine etc plus then I added his pic from the White album and made a collage for my tiny bedroom. He was my hero and a philosophical guidepost for me. This remained true until his tragic death.
From what I've gathered over the years, I Me Mine was what drove George to temporarily quit the Beatles during the Let It Be film. The other 3 were rehearsing it while John and Yoko were dancing around Twickenham studio. Later that day was when George and John supposedly had their row and George going off about Yoko right to John's face. After that, he split and that was when John, Paul and Ringo started jamming with Yoko. John told the others that if George didn't come back, they should continue with Eric Clapton. Paul said no, that wouldn't do. A few days later, George did come back, but they moved the rehearsals to Apple, the Concert was shelved, and Billy Preston was brought in. Because of the argument they had early on in the film, everyone thought it was Paul's fault George split. It may have contributed to his splitting, but the real reason was John's lack of helping on George's songs and Yoko's constant presense, not to mention John's inability to bring any quality new songs to the sessions. George always gave 100% to most of the Lennon and McCartney songs. That was evident during rehearsing of Get Back, when him and Paul were discussing the sequencing of the verses, chorus, etc. Look, these guys had a bond that only the 4 of them will ever know about. You don't go through that whole Beatles thing without it. They were Brothers that loved each other but also got on each other's nerves, just like anyone else. Too much written about how they hated each other at the end. You cannot make so many great and meaningful songs with that much hatred. I've never believed all that Let It Be hype from the get go. Can't wait to see the new Documentary.
Yes, I agree things couldn't have been all that bad and I am sick of that line of hype. Most people don't realize that the release of Let It Be was held up while the Beatles reunited with George Martin and recorded their wonderful Abbey Road album. So while Let It Be was the last album released, Abbey Road was the last one they recorded. When I saw Paul McCartney several years back, days before Paul's 68th birthday, Paul and his crack band did 36 songs. 18 of them were Beatles tunes. And of those 18, fully a third of them were from Let It Be! So Paul must not have been completely disappointed with the Let It Be album!!!! I have always loved this album!
On the last two albums, Paul was really there for George. He helped him with ideas for I, Me, Mine and Paul did not become annoyed when he was told his lyric changes did not work for George's song. On Abbey Road, Paul's beautiful harmonies and bass lines proved that Paul gave his best for George's songs: Something and Here Comes the Sun. John and Yoko were in an accident so George, Paul and Ringo were alone on these songs.
Paul is often criticised for not being enthusiastic about george's songs. At least he was present and working to collaborate and/or improve them, unlike John, (at least most of the time).
George always struck me as a guy who worked hard at his craft, whether it be song writing or guitar playing. With each album it seemed he was improving at a geometric progression. The guitars on Abbey Road being light years from Meet The Beatles. By the end of the Beatles he proved to be the equal of L & Mc as a writer.
I just watched the first part of "Get Back" and when he started playing this I immediately thought of what you said in this video. To me that says something. Keep up the great work. Love the content!
Poor george...he is my moms favorite and i get it! This dude has a haunting genius romanticism that comes from being a little more introverted..incredible documentary
I love George so much. His journey was fascinating. A seeker. All Things Must Pass is phenomenal. His last album, Brainwashed, is a beautiful musical coda.
George was absolutely a force in 1969 and this song is one of his very best ever even though not most popular..and I like the flamenco part they should have left it In.
I have "overlooked" the song for a long time but now love it too. And I also like the reworking of Phil Spector, to say something positive about him, while most others seem to hate him.
It's funny, for as much as George would complain about Paul & his views of Harrison's writing...Paul is ALWAYS present and playing on the songs. In fact I'd argue that two of McCartney's best basslines are "While My Guitar..." and especially "Something", that's one of his best. Lennon is frequently absent or doesn't participate...or just plays some slop. On some of the "Get Back" sessions tapes I've heard, Lennon is just butchering some of George's best songs that would end up on "All Things Must Pass"..."Let It Down", "Isn't It A Pity", etc. Paul may have been a complete pain in the ass during those days, but you can't say he wasn't involved and putting forth an effort on George's songs...considering that George & John were close that had to really hurt George.
A well done video. I was skeptical watching a 13 minute video about a 3 minute song but i learned a new insight I had thought the song was about the greed shown about choosing a new manager and the eventual break-up. The ego idea fits better (and is straight from George).

in a video themed solely around the ego, i'm laughing slightly when you asked "Why do you think John was behaving poorly to George? Why was he not interested in supporting his friend's song?" answer: ego. John was a real human with all the flaws inherent to his character, and let's be honest, he had a strong narcissistic streak which always ends up affecting close friends/family. (John was always my favourite, but he could be a real bastard to people he cared about, especially when someone else was encroaching on his 'attention'. He had to learn to share. My son and i have been working on some variations of I Me Mine, and every time i play it on piano, i can hear George's voice in the melody line, reaching and faltering but pushing with all the heart he has in him. You hear his sadness and his lamentation, but he's always got this lovely 'roll with it' attitude that makes it still feel surmountable rather than hopeless. I'm glad he kept pushing and writing--his songs touch on a meaninful dimension that might've been overlooked/underrepresented by the other band members. He was a non-confrontational boundary-pusher; he didn't shy away from difficult things when they needed to be addressed. George is a hero. :)

John also incorporated influences in his songs that weren’t traditional rock. He later admitted that he was distracted by other things but basically loved rock & roll. Interestingly, he said “Magical Mystery Tour” was his favorite Beatle LP “because it’s so weird.” Obviously, it’s their least rock & roll LP. He also said that in hindsight he realized that songs like “How Do You Sleep?” & “Steel and Glass” were as much about him as anyone else. Maybe it was his own insecurities tempering his feelings about the flamenco version. I love John but he was a walking contradiction at times. Personally, I think it was a case of broadening their musical palette. IMO that’s one of the things that made them the GOAT. More than any other artist they blurred the lines to re-define rock.
This is easily have to be my favorite video of yours you’ve ever made I don’t know if it’s due to I ME MINE being one of my favorite songs in the Beatles discography but this video was absolutely delightful
I’d say George made them all sit up and take notice ( as well as the rest of the music world ) when he came out with his first solo album “ All Things Must Pass “. It’s a masterpiece, and arguably the best solo Beatle album. I can’t wait for Peter Jackson’s film of this time in their career. But Covid-19 has given us no choice. Long live George.
lots of interesting conversation about relationships, etc. below, but let's be sure to return to: this song blasts. Listen to the guitar lines, the vocal harmonizing-hollering - - a great performance. Thanks for featuring this one, a favorite of mine ever since the album was released.
You know, Hollyhobs, in watching this video (and your series of videos) it strikes me: 1) there is SO MUCH MORE to every Beatle song than just the duration of its existence. So much more context, so many more links to other things in life; 2) it's why the Beatles were so important in our individual lives and the world at large; and 3) I'm not sure if each song, each link and the joy we receive from each song makes us more connected to the universe, or if we're all in a cult.
Nice job my friend, definitely some very insightful analysis and commentary that is difficult to hear and piece together at times in the video footage! thank you... As much as George was talking in this song about setting his ego aside, it is an extremely difficult and unnatural thing to do for any human being, and ultimately impossible for any Beatle to do as much as they may want to!
Thank you for this. You've made me cry for an unknown reason.I remember Let it Be andGeorge's first album and my life at that time, which causes my tears. In a good way, though.😍
I like the duality of this song, the verses are very serious and have a message to convey, as opposed to the simple rock and roll " I, I, me, me, mine " break. In any case, I very often find myself listing to older original music to escape from what I hear on the radio nowadays, the cookie cutter pop divas of both genders that wallow in stagnation and their outright refusal to dare to be different. We had the Beatles and the Stones, the kids have Bieber and Pink. That's what it's come to.
Such a beautiful video about such a beautiful song. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and watch one every time you release of. Thank you for your hard work, and keep it up.
George saw John as a leader and Paul more as a comrade. He took instruction better from John than from Paul, and that explains why he was so mellow about John's obvious disinterest but pushed back at Paul's suggestions (which were not as good as what George was doing, but he resented other Paul input that was more on the mark).
Discovered your channel through this video dedicated to the Beatles song "I me mine". George Harrison's take on his time is still relevant. Nowadays like 50 years ago i am just missing my mind. Another stellar job, my friend. That bit (#9 I think) where Paul suggested changing the lyrics to "my me me mine" because it flows better, reminds me of that bit in the movie Yesterday where Ed Sheeran suggests changing the lyrics to 'Hey Dude' instead of 'Hey Jude.'
Wow! Who are you??? You are simply lovely!! Thank you for this beautiful presentation of this song and the journey George was on. You have such a sweet and genuine way of presenting this time and the many things to consider about how the song came to be and what it tells us about the guys and that moment in the journey. Thank you! I am delighted to have discovered your channel.
Fun fact: The actual finished recording (which later appeared on "Anthology 3") was too short and Phil Spector remixed and extended the track to 2 minutes 25 seconds for the album.
You never mentioned that George, Paul & Ringo made the official recording of I Me Mine in Jan. 1970. A full year after the Let It Be sessions. It was only a minute and a half. Phil Spector repeated one of the verses and extended it by almost a minute.
apparently George was so mad at John after recording I me mine that when the cameras turned off they had a fist fight...He was pissed off that John was dancing with yoko instead of contributing...
Yet when John had made his Imagine album, he invited George to be part of the band. I believe John was just tired of being in the Beatles but was happy to work with them individually
'I Me Mine' is a great rocker/waltz (shame the flamenco part didn't make it into the final mix; but hey ho). Add to the fact George got the sublimely easy going 'For You Blue' on here and you've got one of the many reasons 'Let It Be' is my favourite Beatles album. Technically as good as Sgt Pepper/Abbey Road -no- but just endlessly re-listenable (laid back even when it's rocking). Only 2 downsides in my humble opinion - 'Maggie Mae' (I actually love the song but if you listen to John Lennon bootlegs, there are better versions out there) and 'Dig It' which is just random jamming Phil Spector shouldn't have included. Controversially to some I prefer the Spector version of this album but I can't help thinking what it would be like if more Harrison tracks had been included, I know they went on 'All Things Must Pass' instead but can you imagine them on here with the other 3 Beatles backing him up?!
Don't forget how this song was only included because the film was to include them merely rehearsing the song. So they were told they had to cut a proper version for the album. Otherwise they would've just let this song be bootlegged. Maybe George would've recorded later on his own
They only had a minute and a half of a song. So they cut it again sans John on January 4, 1970. Then later it was edited by Phil Spector for the Let It Be album.
Someone I Love, sorry HollyHobs for my format of comment vs. E-mail, MaryAnn is a most tolerant, kind, beautiful and generous woman "I, Me,Mine" has ever and have ever could have; despite my, at times, being a total complete fool on the hill. I'm graced to still have her, getting my mind right. Thank you, MaryAnn, you sure can love and be a friend!💖
If you have ever been around an addict when they are jonesing the exhibit a lot of the same behavior John seems to have during this song. Losing focus, sudden bursts of anger and asking you to continually repeat stuff.
Love that song and I agree It's a very underrated Beatles song and it's the hardest to play on Beatles rock band by the way, but I think I like for you blue just a little bit more! Great video!
Easily the best original tune from the sessions, particularly in its shorter Glynn Johns incarnation. Fantastic vocal, perfectly arranged instruments and heart reaching sentiment. It’s really too bad Spector duplicated half the song to stretch it out, because it’s rare to have a tune so economically crafted to say everything it needs to in under two minutes.

Paul is often criticised for not being enthusiastic about george's songs. At least he was present and working to collaborate and/or improve them, unlike John, (at least most of the time).
Yeah. Paul made significant arrangement contributions.
I seem to recall that John had the same attitude towards "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
And that's why I'm surprised that after the breakup everyone shunned Paul and George even participated on John's album.
@@jugibur2117 And it's then proven Paul had some points. Its refusal of welcoming Klein proved correct after the financial scandal committed by Klein.
John barely contributed ANYTHING to George's songs after 1965!!!!

You never mentioned that George, Paul & Ringo made the official recording of I Me Mine in Jan. 1970. A full year after the Let It Be sessions. It was only a minute and a half. Phil Spector repeated one of the verses and extended it by almost a minute.
I wish I had your attitude about everything... it's refreshing
Could be that Paul suggested the lyric change to take the sting out of the lyrics as they were aimed at the Beatles.
apparently George was so mad at John after recording I me mine that when the cameras turned off they had a fist fight...He was pissed off that John was dancing with yoko instead of contributing...
Yet when John had made his Imagine album, he invited George to be part of the band. I believe John was just tired of being in the Beatles but was happy to work with them individually
i personally love when George calls Paul "beatlehead" lol

Thanks for all the insights. This is wonderful. :)
If you have ever been around an addict when they are jonesing the exhibit a lot of the same behavior John seems to have during this song. Losing focus, sudden bursts of anger and asking you to continually repeat stuff.
Ten interesting facts about I me mine: The best song on the let it be album.
For a second, I thought that was my stomach !! too funny....
Wonderful work again. For the record, Twickenham is pronounced Twickenam.

Thanks man. This was nice to listen and check out!
Crazy how many amazing songs they made that not too many people knew
Love that song and I agree It's a very underrated Beatles song and it's the hardest to play on Beatles rock band by the way, but I think I like for you blue just a little bit more! Great video!
Easily the best original tune from the sessions, particularly in its shorter Glynn Johns incarnation. Fantastic vocal, perfectly arranged instruments and heart reaching sentiment. It’s really too bad Spector duplicated half the song to stretch it out, because it’s rare to have a tune so economically crafted to say everything it needs to in under two minutes.
