- The Fantastic Journey was built and designed entirely by hand by Mr. Paul E. Roads, the founder of Wonderland. It took him 1.5 years to complete the project.
The ride originally had an interior and exterior dip however, the interior dip was eventually taken out and the exterior dip was modified to a much milder form years later.
The tricks and animated items featured on the ride were purchased from the International Amusement Devices of Stanton, Ohio. Although one of the more popular tricks, the animated turning barrell, was created by Mr. Roads.
The Fantastic Journey was a milestone achievement for Wonderland. Its grand opening was advertised and celebrated in grand fashion. The mayor and other elected officials, along with TV and radio personalities were invited for the ribbon cutting and given the privilege of being the first to ride. Souvenir cups commemorated the grand opening were printed and sold through the concession.
In 2003, the ride was updated to feature the “electric chair man”, which replaced the skeletons riding bikes. He has been a big success with the public. -- From Wonderland Website

Wow it’s like the wacky shack!
First rode this as an 8 year old in the late 70's. I'm now over 50, and I still enjoy at least two rides on the FJ whenever I visit the park. They have done a terrific job at keeping the ride updated with new thrills, while keeping the favorites in tact (ie the barrel roll). The ride initially had a decent drop in total darkness and an exterior drop (where the "balcony" is in this video). I wonder why they removed both drops? ...... Either way, it's a long-time favorite for locals.
That looked like fun and done well for a small regional park.
